Iceland's answer to Limp Bizkit, Korn, and Linkin Park, Quarashi's rock-rap-industrial hybrid usually makes for bad rap and even worse rock, but the mix works on Jinx for reasons unknown. The group's Fred Durst rap-metal shtick ("Stick 'Em Up," "Weirdo") is a bit tired, but its Beastie Boys-style eclecticism ("Mr. Jinx," "Baseline") flips a catchy cornucopia of horn, guitar, and xylophone samples. Certainly, when Quarashi pull out all of their experimental stops on "Tarfur," a percussion-heavy funk track that's recorded in Icelandic, or "Dive In," a techno ballad crooned by the band's jack-of-all-trades Hössi Olafsson, the results are fun. Move over Björk and Sigur Rós, there's a new innovator in town. --Dalton Higgins

Mind Blowing!.......2007-01-25
If you're a fan of the Beastie Boys or the Dub Pistols, this cd is a must have!
Nice pick up... especially ay $0.01.......2006-09-20
I originally bought this album after hearing Mr Jinx on Madden 03, after a few runs of the album I started to really enjoy it. I am a huge Rap / Metal fan and this album falls very much under the rap category. Very similar style to Beastie Boys each song has its own strengths and this is one of those albums you have on random play etc when you have people in the car or people come round, it's what I would call a head turner people always want to know who is singing.
Tracking 9 - Xeneizes is excellent if you have a good bass. I only have a 400W amp and 1200W sub in my car, sounds excellent thought... one of the few tracks that I would consider upgrading my sound system for...
Every track is different on this album which is what makes you love it or hate it personally I think there is something for everyone on this album, I wouldn't recommend this for everyone but if you want something fresh, different and a-little querky then this is for you... and as my title says its a Gem in my collection and for $0.01 you can't go wrong!?
Cheesy rap metal which at least has a bunch of "good", yet cheesy, songs - "Mr. Jinx" is a pretty good song though.......2006-01-07
"Jinx" is most definitely a very cheesy rap metal album, but Quarashi at least fills it with a bunch of relatively enjoyable tunes. The reason I gave this a "4" is because of the song "Mr. Jinx" which is actually a very good tune (and better than the hit "Stickem' Up"). The "rappers" are pretty subpar in their charisma and charm, but they aren't terrible per se. The songs are catchy enough that you'll stickem out to the end. They're extremely forgettable, but pretty fun while you're listening to them. The only song that will stick in your head long after you've listened to this is arguably "Mr. Jinx" (though "Stickem' Up" and "Baseline" comes close as theyre extremely catchy). The lyrics are pretty subpar - they're merely an excuse to have a singer and catchy lyrics. If it weren't for the fact that there were so many catchy-yet-stupid songs here then it would've gotten a much worse rating. However, if you're interested in rap-metal that's relatively good, then "Jinx" might intrigue you. You should be at least satisfied if you got this album, at least if you knew what you were getting yourself into. Slightly recommended.
Highlights include:
"Stickem' Up"
"Mr. Jinx"
"Baseline"
"Malone Lives"
"Copycat"
"Transparent Parents"
"Weirdo" (sort of)
"Xeneizes" (sort of)
"Dive In"
"Bless"
The Best Beastie Boys Album in Years:.......2005-09-01
Hailing from the land of Bjork and Vikings, Iceland's Quarashi mix one part Beastie Boys (circa "Paul's Boutique"), one part guitar-laden techno and one part quirky Icelandic eccentricity on their amazing debut "Jinx."
While the current rap-rock, nu-metal ilk rely heavily on the ignorant hip-hop guise of thug life, pimpin' and drugs Quarashi sidestep all of that in favor of liberal doses of intelligence, wit and actual creativity (a rare breed in today's musical climate).
Making allusions to the likes of J.D. Salinger, Charles Manson, Star Wars and their unconventional roots, the three emcees in Quarashi appear far more concerned with lyrical content and clever rhymes and subject matter than "bling-blingin'." The group also manages to avoid rap-rock cliches of bitter, pilfered ennui and ranting perpetrated by the likes of Fred Durst and the horde of bands he has spawned.
Tracks like the eclectic mishmash of samples and live music on "Mr. Jinx" and the thumping and appropriately titled "Bassline" ring with a uniqueness the likes of the (current) Beastie Boys and Linkin Park can't touch.
Dabbling in tasteful and unconventional samples coupled with heavy guitar lines, tacks like "Jinx's" first single "Stick `Em Up" and the angsty "Weirdo" are a breath of fresh air in a musical climate laced with unrightfully angry artists without any penchant for originality whatsoever.
Even on what I can only presume is the world's first rap record in Icelandic, "Tarfur," the emcees in Quarashi sound lyrically tight and catchy despite the fact that I have absolutely no idea what any of them are saying.
As a whole, "Jinx" is ancredibly catchy and original and proves that Iceland has far more to offer than hearty meade and horribly pretentious, swan-wearing pop artists.
Quarashi Beats them all.......2004-10-10
I listen to ALOT of music, all types of music. By far this CD has seriously changed the way i even look at music. They are just amazing, they have Rap, pop, rock, jazz, dance everything in this CD it isnt like any Cd i have and i never came across any kind of music like this, i sware this is my favorite Cd and i made 3 backup copies just in case something ever happens to this one. Hossi, the former lead singer, has so much soul to when he raps or sings, and its really rare now to find a rapper who can rap and sing.. and when they rap, its not like normal rapping, like talking about women in a degrating way, and talking about how much cash they have and the car they drive, its actually something to think about. I first heard then when i was playing Ampitude and when i heard there song i couldnt stop replaying it on my ps2..and finally i looked them up on the next and brought the CD it was the best 11 dollars i ever spent.I wouldnt Trade this CD for the world, and im not kidding either. But getting to the point if you really want to hear something to get you moving this Cd is just right, Stick em up is one of them that makes you want to get up and dance. I seriously have nothing bad to say about Quarashi exsept that im terribly sorry that Hossi had to leave the band. But they have a new band leader named Tiny, hes nothing like Hossi but hes cool. Back to the point. its totally worth buying this CD, theres a song for everyone on here to match anyones taste. in you noticed, everyone on the reviews has atleast one song they liked on the CD, and thats because they dont limit themselfs to only one genre. but many so everyone has something. Well i hope this review helped you and if not then atleast i got my feelings out.

I SAW HIM.......2006-12-22
I believe this was the album he was touring under when I saw him open for Rush. This being my first time ever to see Rory, I knew I was in for something special. I didn't know he was going to blow the doors off The Checkerdome in St. Louis. Rush was great, but Rory absolutely stole the show. This is a great album and everyone should buy everything they can find by this talented guitarist. I believe Rory can easily play right alongside and maybe even better than Hendrix, Clapton, California, Page and Beck.
HE IS THE MASTER OF HIS CRAFT!
A fireworks shower fusing blues and rock.......2004-02-25
The late Rory Gallagher has always embodied the spirit of the blues for me. When I first connected with his music in 1972, just after he left the power trio Taste to front his own band, I felt a resonance his brand of blues that I never felt with the authentic or traditional Mississippi Delta or Chicago blues.
This remastered, released edition of "Jinx" captures Mr. Gallagher at an exciting, dynamic point in his storied career. Mr. Gallagher expanded his band, adding Bendan O'Neill as the drummer, Bob Andrews on keyboards, and a pair of saxophonists on some tracks. Mainstay Gerry McAvoy continued on bass. He also recorded Jinx in Germany, perhaps feeling more at home there---as Roger Chapman did---than back in the UK where fads and trends tended to garner more attention than talent.
"Jinx" is an explosive return to form, a fireworks shower fusing blues and rock, that will raise hackles on the nape of one's neck. It's clear from the opening power of Big Guns that Mr. Gallagher is in a take-no-prisoners mood, and he fires off riffs and slides with grace and style. There are no filler tracks here, and even the bonus tracks, missing from the vinyl edition because of limited space/time, showcase a tight, focused band.
It's hard to pick favorites, but Jinxed is near the top of my all-time favorite Rory Gallagher numbers, a rich sonic stew propelled by excellent percussion and bass, accented with double saxes, and peppered with some heady guitar work. Loose Talk and Ride on Red are worthy of a call-out, but so are all the other tracks.
Donal Gallagher, Rory's brother, oversaw the remixing and remastering of this CD, and the sound here is clear and crisp. Listening to "Jinx" now makes it easy for me to agree with the critics who declared Mr. Gallagher to be every bit as good as Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton ever were.
Rory Scorches!.......2002-09-27
On Jinx, Rory really comes out scorching! From the opening track "Big Guns", Rory unleashes a fiery sonic assault, true to his own nature and form. This is an excellent album, right in the midst of new wave, Rory once again refused to compromise, and plays from the heart with such touching songs as Jinxed, and Loose Talk, his guitar playing is once again, fiery, spirited, and inspiring, and the compositions are strong and meaningful. Also, Rory also reveals more of his romantic side and psychic experiences on the track "Signals" (a true gem), giving us a deeper look into his private life. Rory's inventiveness also shines on this album through subtle, yet judicious use of sound effects such as phaser and flanger on "Bourbon", "Jinxed" and "Loose Talk". His slide playing is also brilliant and blistering on "Big Guns" in which he uses his magic to create that life or death kind of tension encompassing a small time hoodlum who worked himself into a corner. Rory's magic and fire once again shines on this album and is truly a breath of fresh air to hear when considering some of the ridiculous and simplistic music which was released during 1982.
Amazing guy!.......2000-05-12
This is an excellent CD. Rory treated every track carefully, and his playing shines on every track and shows so much feeling on every note he plays. This is a must have. "Bourbon" is a Rory trademark Rock and Roll, "Easy come, easy go" is one of the most beautiful ballads I've ever heard in my life, "Devil made me do it" here Rory is having fun, typical rockabilly. The bonus track "Lonely mile", I just can't believe it's not on the original JINX, for a bonus track, is one of the best tracks on the CD.Thanks a lot.
Ordinary.......2000-05-10
I bought this one for my brother who's been looking for it for years. To me, it sounds like plain rock'n'roll. Sometimes very bluesy... even though the best track is the bonus ballad »Easy Come Easy Go«.
What annoys me are Rory's vocals. Not really a superb singer, and this kinds of downlevels the otherwise OK rock'n'roll.
»Jinx« is mainly for Rory Gallagher fans! The CD booklet says it's symbolic for a difficult phase in his life, so maybe the fans will get much more out of the lyrics and the music.

Not a very good call from all you reviewers........2004-08-30
I really don't know why everyone is drooling over this album, it sucks. The beats are mediocre at best and the lyrics are garbage. I mean, didn't anyone at least go to a lyrics site and read the rhymes? They don't make any sense. But that's not why i'm mad. Kool Keith and MF Doom also say stuff that doesn't make a lot of sense, but they at least have a sense of humor about it. They put energy into it, the're own twist if you call it. But the visionaries sound SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BOOOOOOOOORIIIIIIIIINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!! DOESN'T ANYONE NOTICE, OR DOESN'T ANYONE CARE?????!!!!! I mean c'mon, i'd get better enthusiasm listening to my dead great-grandmother rap. They put too much emphasis on words, sounding them out like we the listeners were in preschool. And the boring tone that their voices have doesn't help any either. Now being a lyricist myself, this makes me angry. What we're these people thinking when they recorded their lyrics? Didn't someone in the studio realized they sucked? How do these people get sighned? It's beyond me, but just between us, I slept through the whole album. The beats are too slow and boring, with no kick at all and a usual high-hat tapping monotonously in the background; and the lyrics are boring, but i've already explained that. Luckily I burned it instead of buying it but I wouldn't even suggest you do that. Just steer clear of all things visionary.
zzzzzzz, huh? oh, there's music playing. 1.5 stars.......2002-10-24
All of my ratings are from 1-10
Recording:5 As with most indie albums, they don't spend a lot of money on the quality of the recording. Therefore the album suffers in every aspect as a result... Mixing and Mastering need help, it all sounds mushy.
Beats:5 Maybe half the songs have decent beats, but there isn't one solid bassline on this entire CD. I mean the kind of bassline that makes the 15's go thump, and gets the neck moving. Not one. Again, I believe that a better recording would make my rating go up significantly in this category.
Rhymes:4 Maybe if they had some better beats they could put together some better rhyme flows... Content is better than some, but there's no punch and not a whole lot of musical quality to the flow. Bad recording or not, bad beats or not,....
The bad songs are instantly skipped in your CD player, the other half are good enough I suppose, but all I can think of when I listen to this CD is how boring it is. Shouldn't music evoke some type of emotion when you hear it? I don't even nod my head. I don't dole out hard earned money for an amateur CD, bring on the professionals. Take my [$] and drop it into studio time, but before you go, practice, practice, practice.
Hip-Hop the way it should be!.......2002-05-25
Don't sleep. Hip-Hop in it purest form! If you're into stuff like Dilated, J5, SOB, Lexicon, then you're sure to like this CD. Big ups to Key-Kool......
Not as good as the first one!.......2001-10-17
this album was o.k. i guess. the first one was mind blowing lyricism. they had a linguistic lingo that amused everyone and they didn't express one bad word!this second album was kind of good but some songs were not reaching the soul.

This album is a pure Fender assault, with catchy hooks and clever, slightly devious lyrics ("When I see your best friend, it feels like an eaarthquake" for example).
It's like plain old loud skatepunk music, only a click smarter and funnier. I've had this CD for many years and it still gives me a grin whenever I play it.
The second "Too Slow" on the track list is really an uncredited cover of the Circle Jerks' "Red Tape". It's hard to imagine but Olivelawn's cover is actually a bit faster.
If you like clever, loud, aggressive guitar rock, give this one a spin. If you like Olivelawn, you should check out Fluf. It's the phoenix that rose from the ashes of Olivelawn's demise, and they rock like hell, too.

This is a great album. If you are at all into the offhand rhymes of the Beastie Boys or the Heavy Metal Riffs of Rage Against the Machine, you will be instantly hooked on this band. Go for the Clean version, weak as that sounds. But come on! One Cent? You can't beat that. Literally. It's unbeatable.

Album Description
The fourth album from sprawling Montreal ensemble Molasses features members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hrsta, Fly Pan Am, Silver Mt. Zion, and Shalabi Effect.
Customer Reviews:
Godspeed indeed..........2007-01-19
The aptly named Molasses project is ultimately the work of singer/songwriter Scott Chernoff, but what reputable Montreal act would be complete without guys like Sam Shalabi and Godspeed's Thierry Amar and Efrim Menuck?
This is the group's fourth album (and "group" here is an understatement, as the Polyphonic Spree barely outnumber them), and this time around they haven't altered the formula -- we're treated to languid, spacy compositions that incorporate elements of folk rock, psychedelia, post-rock, field recordings and even a hint of shoegazing for good measure. Tension is created through the use of low frequencies, distant drones (supposedly emulating Iraqi air-raid sirens), creeping tempos (hence, "aptly named"), Chernoff's whispered vocals and barely audible choirs, occasionally exploding into a riot (i.e. "Coda"'s bleeding amp, the everlasting GY!BE feedback on "Miss Peach's Pawnshop"). The music never really seems to reach its destination, postponing its climax until the last second or simply avoiding it altogether, then whipping it out three tracks later. Again, that's the sort of thing we've come to expect from this camp, but it's still effective, despite the lullaby quality of many of the songs (possibly echoing the tension of world affairs and the leaders who sway them?).
Maybe so. Trouble at Jinx Hotel's lyrics center around the Middle East vs. US troubles, specifically the attacks in New York. Chernoff is careful to avoid too many pointed remarks, but with titles such as "La La La, Amerika", "St. Christopher's Blues", "You Can't Win" and "Sign of Judgment", he pretty much tips his hand.
It's clear that Molasses still has something to say, particularly about peace and war, as told by a prophet on the mount. Do we really need another folk singer? As long as Chernoff has his lush sonic congregation behind him, you can baptize me into his cult any day.
