By the mid-'70s, even The Who's leftovers had more interest than most rock best-of albums--"Glow Girl" is a concise blueprint of 1969's "Tommy"; "Naked Eye" and "Pure and Easy" were victims of the doomed Lifehouse project; "I'm the Face" was the band's mod-obsessed first single; and even "Little Billy," an antismoking advertisement, still rocks hard. John Entwistle's faux country "Now I'm a Farmer" was contemptible, but the closing anthem "Long Live Rock" redeemed such missteps. The 1998 CD reissue added studio versions of "Young Man Blues" and "Summertime Blues," among many others, and resequenced the tracks. --Steve Knopper
Customer Reviews:
"Time Is Passing" Pick this up already with the bonus material!.......2007-07-20
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.
Originally a terrific vinyl treat from 1974, the 1988 remastered "Odds & Sods" includes twelve bonus tracks that completely changes where the previously released songs appear.
I recall very vividly having conversations with a plethora of Who collectors when the improved "Odds & Sods" hit the CD shelves. The majority clearly wanted the running order from the album to be maintained and the bonus tracks to follow. This doesn't detract in any way the sheer brilliance that awaits.
Although "Odds & Sods" put together a myriad of previously unreleased tracks, it was never intended to be a replacement for a studio record. To the surprise of many, the material was strong and consistent, including some of the most underrated tunes the band would pen.
The studio "Summertime Blues" didn't lose any of the raw in your face rock and roll from the live version. There aren't too many better three minute numbers.
"Under My Thumb" sees the Who playing the Rolling Stones. The version well constructed and Pete's background to Roger's lead vocal gives us a terrific rendition.
"My Way" often mislabeled as "Easy Going Guy" pays homage to the earlier days of rock and roll (After all it was composed by Eddie Cochran) but the Who has put the definitive stamp all over the song. Townshend's guitar and Daltrey's vocals have the intensity and quality needed to push this over the top. Keith's drums and John's bass are mixed well so the tasty playing is very much in the front.
"Young Man Blues" written by Mose Allison could have easily lost its way in the recording studio. Then again when the Who were at their peak the studio wasn't off limits to high energy and raw passion.
"Love Ain't For Keeping" is double the length of the "Who's Next" masterpiece. The version used here isn't any less impressive!
John Entwhistle's "Postcard" is not only a standout track on the album but one of the finest period. The song is a living letter home to his wife with complete tails of the difficulties of being on tour. You can play this one hundred times in a row and it wouldn't lose any of its eternal shine.
With twenty-three tracks and almost seventy-seven minutes of Who rock and roll, the only question left is what are you waiting for?
Great replacement for vinyl..........2007-03-15
I purchased this CD to replace my album, and I was quite pleased with the extended play list! There are quite a few additional songs on the CD!
raw and reckless, early who .......2007-03-13
much of the material on this 23 song disc is simply going to be too crude and raw for the average listener to get into, but for rock and roll history buffs, and fanatic fans of the who, this is a fantastic gathering of rarities, outtakes, and B-sides from the earliest years of the band. the music here is sometimes powerful, sometimes sloppy, sometimes quite good. two tracks are absolutely great: the studio version of "young man blues," and "long live rock." lots of heavy pete townshend power chords and riffs on the guitar, effective at this point more from the sheer aggessive attitude of the player than for proficiency, and plenty of mania from keith moon as he assaults his drum kit in what is often more a percussive storm than an act of musical beat-keeping. highly recommended for lovers of early to mid-sixties garage rock, and for anyone who wants to catch an earful of what this band sounded like back in the beginning.
Odds & Sods.......2007-02-13
This is early songs written by the Who and has much merrit from this album.I believe this is one of the best albums with a cross section of talent from pete townshend, Roger Daltrey and the others. The variety of songs in one album is not often found and so moving in melody. If you like rock and blues then you will enjoy this collection.
A must-have.......2006-10-24
First of all, shame, SHAME, on MCA for having thouroughly muddied the discography of The Who over the years. How many CDs does a loyal fan have to collect only to find redundant tracks like "The Kids Are Alright," "A Legal Matter," or "Baby Don't You Do It" spread across several purchases? And then some genius at MCA decides to bleed us with reissues of "Live at Leeds" and just about everything else that has extra songs tacked on. If it weren't for fanatisicm...
Now, as collections of odd songs go, "Odds & Sods" is one of the true originals in The Who's catalogue ("Meaty Beatty Big and Bouncy" being the other). Assembled by John Entwistle himself during a longish Who hiatus in 1974, this album could have been a microcosm of the later compilation "Maximum R&B" set. There's early Who, High Numbers, pre-Tommy stuff, "Lifehouse" discards and "Quadrophenia" era creative. "Pure and Easy" and "Naked Eye" stand out from the "Who's Next" period, and with today's I-Tunes technology it's possible to mix a home version of what that classic album should have sounded like. Call it a snapshot of the band's history up to a point. What separates "Odds & Sods" from so-called greatest hits is its place in The Who's timeline; they were still a powerhouse band with everyone (more or less) present for duty. For a Who fan brought up on the vinyl records, the endless CD collections are more bewildering than liberating. It's one thing to hear rare material and appreciate how it augments each of The Who's distinct periods. It's quite another thing when we're bludgeoned by industry tricks. "Odds & Sods," though, is worth the reissue.

Against All Odds.......2006-05-10
I TRULY ENJOY THIS CD AND THE MOVIE. MY FAVORITE IS TRACK 1, "AGAINST ALL ODDS" (Look at me Now) by PHIL COLLINS. INCREDIBLE AND EXTREMELY TOUCHING SONG TO MY HEART. I DEDICATE THIS SONG TO "A MAN I ONCE LOVED" AND STILL DO FOREVER.... I WILL ALWAYS TREASURE THIS TRACK AND ALL OF PHIL COLLINS MUSIC...
Against All Odds Soundtrack Review.......2005-08-22
The soundtrack is good, but I actually bought it for just one song,'My Male Curiosity,' by Kid Creole and the Coconuts. The song is really good, but I couldn't find it ANYWHERE else. Amazon had it, the price was great, and the delivery was fast, so it was worth it.
Great Soundtrack, And An Extra Treat For Genesis Fans.......2005-08-13
The soundtrack to the 1984 film "Against All Odds" is an excellent album, and, if you happen to be a Genesis fan, you'll also appreciate that no less than three past members of Genesis contribute solo tracks. Of course there's singer Phil Collins with his classic, Oscar-nominated title song, but also making appearances are singer Peter Gabriel and his rhythmic track, "Walk Through The Fire", and guitarist Mike Rutherford, who contributes the pulsating rock of "Making A Big Mistake" (Mike also does a rare lead vocal on the song as well). Also onboard with great songs are Stevie Nicks, Big Country, and Kid Creole & The Coconuts (remember them?). The second half of the album features the instrumental music from the film, performed with great flare by Michel Colombier and veteran guitarist Larry Carlton, including the spooky "The Search," the romantic shades of "For Love Alone," and the manically percussive "Murder Of A Friend." "Against All Odds" is a great soundtrack disc. I highly recommend it to anyone, but I think Genesis fans in particular should take notice of it for the contributions from Phil, Peter, and Mike. (NOTE: Peter Gabriel's song, "Walk Through The Fire," as it appears on the soundtrack album, is great, but it was an even better song when it was released as a single, as it was remixed with a stronger percussion track. I hope the single version of "Walk Through The Fire" will resurface in the near future, either on a Gabriel rarities collection or box set.)
Brilliant.......2004-06-26
It's 2004 & this CD is still as hot as it was upon release. Beautiful, moody, moving music.
Good CD.......2001-02-09
Pretty good CD..The Highlight for me is the Stevie Nicks song. She's so great and it's a great song. I also like "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins. I recommend you buy it, it's worth it.

Take 5.......2005-10-15
I remember this album when I was in the 8th grade. I love this album. This album shows them bringing to the music world a sound, a style and an attitude that's all their own. Pop and R&B are evident on this project. This album should have been promoted more.
Worst of the Lou Pearlman-founded groups.......2004-09-26
This group Take 5, didn't really impress me with this album. They tend to copy NSYNC too much on a few of the songs and Backstreet Boys on a few others. They don't sound all that good vocally. A couple of the songs are mediocre and dopey sounding. Lou Pearlman discovered some good Orlando-based groups, but this group didn't move me. Neither did O-Town. Sorry that they broke up--hope they end up on some Where Are They Now show 20 years now to discuss this failed, poorly received album!!!!! Disappointing to me!
Great CD for anybody.......2003-06-22
I've had this CD for about 3 years now and I listen to almost everyday when i'm getting ready for whatever i'm going to do. I mostly listen to rap and R&B and I love this even though they are a boy band. I think almost anyone who listens to it will find something on the album that they like.
Strong tracks outweigh the filler- Overall, a good choice.......2003-06-05
Shake it Off and Bounce are the two best tracks on this CD- both are infectious dance tunes that will get you up and movin'. Do That is another good dance song. Hottie has a smooth R&B feel to it. Missing An Angel and To Make You Love Me are ballads, but with good beats to them. However the song Girl Next Door- a song about cheating on your girlfriend, simply did not click with me, and cost this album one star. The remaining songs are filler- ballads that lack the unique sound that Take 5 has on their better tracks. Still, with the good outweighing the bad, I recommending giving this album a spin.
the best.......2003-01-03
this is the best cd you have to have it. the songs are just amazing.

Product came on time. The case was a little banged up and the disc worked after a little cleaning.
A little Gem.......2005-09-15
I have to agree with the previous reviews, this album stands the test of time, and yes every song is good. Having met the band and seen them play live, they are (were) one of the best bands I have ever seen live, they had lots of energy and excellent vocals. Their live show kills the album though, the songs really came off well live. I don't really care if no one ever heard of them, I'd put them up with any group out there, good songs are good songs, and these guys could write some good songs, then again I'm prone to love other no-name artists like Jason Falkner, Jon Brion and Ben Folds.
things i love about bedbugs.......2004-06-26
this is one of my favorite cd's of all time.these songs represent stages of growth.this is by far the most well written set of songs i have ever heard.this cd is a part of me and who i am.my i also suggest you try the barstool prophets- last of the big game hunters.for me it goes hand in hand with this one.
Still Pumps After 10 Years.......2003-08-09
The Odds may be gone, but this Canadian band's glorious CD still rocks with the best of the big boys 10 years after its release. "Jackhammer" is one of the greatest hot grooves with Robert Quine's "pain guitar" rocking out. Whether it's "Sweetness & Love," "Car Crash Love," or "Do You Know," this band starts rocking & does not stop. "Heterosexual Man" is a great driving anthem to male physiology and psychology, a classic track. "Love of Minds" boasts some of the most crisp pop licks around. Odds have tongue in cheek on "The Best Things," "The earth is flat unless you're an astronaut." "The Little Death" is another great track that rocks solidly, "I laid down to take a little nap but there was wet concrete in my bed." The CD concludes with some Beach Boys-style background vocals on the midtempo "Fingerprints." "Bedbugs" is one of those rare rock CDs where each track is excellent. Who knows why this band never hit the very top of the charts? Seek out this little classic set from one of Canada's best-kept secrets. Enjoy!
Every song a pop gem.......2001-11-25
Don't you hate when you buy an album and there are only two or three good songs on it? Not a problem with this record. I could listen to it for hours- every song is brilliant (as are all their songs) which makes it hard to choose a favorite. But I'll give it a shot: It Falls Apart and Fingerprints and Car Crash Love. And Love of Minds. Luckily I live close enough to Canada to hear them on the radio from time to time, but that is less often now that they have split up (tragic, actually.) I was able to get all their albums and you should too, this is top-notch stuff.

CHI TOWN HEAT.......2006-01-05
THIS N**** DOPE!
Marz has been around a few yrs back and returned with his 4th indie release Against All Odds.....
MOst of the hooks on thiz thang are catchy, good s*** to relax/jam too this is a banger allrite.......
only traks that were weak on it are "red carpet pimpin" and "on a hustle" b-sides that, everything else flows nicely and sounds sharp....dont sleep
Chi-town is the city!!!.......2005-10-28
I first heard of Marz a few years back. I picked up his debut Lung Fu Mo She, and liked it a lot at the time. Now when listening to it the beats sound pretty generic, and as a whole the album sounds dated. I hadn't really payed attention to him until now when I found out he had three albums I missed. Left Gorilla Pimpin alone, not too big on rock/rap. Lung Fu Mo She is definately rock/rap, and Gorilla Pimpin sounds even more so. Took a listen to TGZ Nation the Mixtape, and Against All Odds and really liked them. You can tell this time around the focus is on hip-hop, not rock. TGZ Nation has good beats, but they're not Marz's beats. The beats on Against All Odds are decent, but not high quality, although a few stand out. Marz is really improving his rapping skills, and although I feel he may never break into the mainstream, he may become a good underground rapper. He stills needs to work on, and polish his flow, as well as expand his vocabulary. Against All Odds is a good cd, entertaining listen, and if you buy it from his website it will only cost you 10 bucks. Check it out, you shouldn't be dissappointed. Thanx 4 reppin Chi-town Marz.
This **** is good........2005-10-15
There isn't one track on this record I didn't love. Marz's lyrics are great and cover everything form the gangster, the inspiring and the funny. You can dance to this record, relax to it and well you know.
I definitely recommend it.

Against All Odds is a great album for just about any hardcore fan whether you like old or new hardcore. High screaming vocals while the music keeps a fast pace pretty much the whole way through. Every song is great. The one that sticks out though is "We Won't Forget" which is a tribute to Raybeez (the singer of Warzone that died)I also like "United". Very good hardcore cd

Nothing unusual about Odds brilliance.......2006-10-15
Canadians and border-town Americans know that the 90s was a rich era for Canadian rock, among others The Tragically Hip, Sloan, Rheostatics, The Watchmen, Spirit of the West, Barenaked Ladies, and the delightful Odds. Odds personified the Canadian blend of equal parts alternative and classic rock along with smart lyrics, and Good Weird Feeling represents the pinnacle of their body of work. For better or worse, Odds are one of those bands whose CDs require several listens before the listener really feels ready to cuddle up, before appreciation is fully formed. I spent the summer of 1996 backpacking through Southeast Asia and this was one of a handful of albums I had with me, almost the proverbial "desert island" scenario, and it just got better and better as the summer went on. It's a diverse album, well balanced between hard rockers, poppy alternative, and groove-based rock. "Truth Untold", "Radios of Heaven", and "Mercy To Go" respectively being the best of these three genres. They provide signposts for the solid tracks that occupy the rest of the album. As mentioned above and by other reviewers, it's not just the music but the well stated and introspective lyrics; again a delicate balance that avoids pretention and simplicity. "I cross myself and do my best acid queen/a cross between a dime-store witch/and a whirling painted Martin Sheen/I try on your lipstick/I try on your clothes/I wanna be you for a little while/and I'm freaked out enough to bloody my own nose" (Oh Sorrow, Oh Shame). "The first thing I did when I got in the gate/was crank up the left-hand dial/I got there first/the track star seemed to take a while/now I can dance like Nuryev/with these wings on my body/St. Peter complains that it's too loud down in the lobby (Radios of Heaven).
It's a shame that Odds didn't last longer than they did, but such is life. Instead of lamenting that fact go out and pick up this album. It's where a new Odds fan should start his journey.
Neat Freak in a Hurricane.......2004-10-30
Odds have turned into one of my favorite "under the radar screen" bands. Each of their releases has a few tracks that go into my classic category of great rock. My favorite track is "Radios of Heaven" with Pat Steward's drums and Craig Northey's driving guitar, "There's a gorgeous sunset happening on the airwaves; I really want you to hear this song someday, so you behave." "The Last Drink" tracks a bit folky with acoustic strumming and Northey's wonderfully offbeat lyrics, "Someone stabbed my voodoo doll, now it hurts each time that nature calls, and you're lucky that nature's finished calling out to you. ... So I should swallow real hard & deal with this pain cause I'm as wasted as a neat freak in a hurricane." "Mercy to Go" gets a great groove going, "When you're a tower of strength, people climb up your back side." The tunes on "Good Weird Feeling" are consistently strong and at times sublime. Don't let this one get away! Bravo!
Fresh sound from Canada.......2002-02-01
Very rock'n'roll sounding band... So nothing really new there, but old rock recipe seems to work very well with those guys.
If you like Dave Mathews Band - that will be new startling discovery for you ...
But beware - you may easily make yourself addicted to it!
alternative music fan from WI.......1999-12-20

A must listen mood album.......1998-09-24
This is one of those albums that just falls into your lap, and after that you can't turn it off. It has ethereal harmonies and quality crafted lyrics. All songs are good, there is no "fluff" to this recording.

Don't Miss This.......2006-06-24
The Odds are not to be overlooked by the fickle pop fans. They are one of the best pop rock bands of the 90's. This band had a great string of stong hit singles. It's nice to be able to get them all on one disc for your listening pleasure. The band have biting sense of humour, strong lyrics, jangley guitars & clean clear vocals with nice harmonies. The songs Someone Who Is Cool, It Falls Apart, Eat My Brain, Jack Hammer, Love Is The Subject, Make You Mad & Truth Untold rival anything R.E.M. or the Goo Goo Dolls have released. If your a fan of Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello or Matthew Sweet than this greatest hits collection will please you greatly. Spend your money on a collection that is worthy, this one!
sealed airtight freshness.......2000-10-24
Well, here it is. The thirteen year of the legacy known as Odds cramped into one disc. Although they are known more for their crowd-pleasing road shows, this complilation is still able to capture the intensity of a band at the top of its game. From cult college hits like "Heterosexual Man", hard to find singles like "Kings of Orient" (which was suppose to have a video starring Scott Thompson... Warner's full of bastards), all the way to US Top 40 hit "Someone Who's Cool", you'll find yourself hitting the repeat button over and over again. Don't resist it. Let it all flow.

Twelve mellow, melodic, and emotional `date' songs.......2006-04-27
The Good
"Sometimes Your Best Isn't Good Enough" is a mid-tempo track about tough break-ups. The chorus is layered with melodic multi-part harmonies. "I'm a Sucker for a Girl in Uniform" pays homage to the girls in blue and the ones in camouflage. No joking here, these guys are dead serious. Watery guitar tones and soft vocals portray the emotional pain of "Do You Want Me to Go Away." Broken promises and heartbreak seem to be a recurring theme for The Churchills' music, and "It Only Hurts When I Breathe" is no different. The chorus hook is sure to elicit plenty of powerful feelings. "There Never Going to Find Me" is where the group really rocks out by kicking up the tempo and guitar fuzz.
The Bad
These songs are great for poignant dramatic scenes on television, but when they're run back to back, they get a little repetitive.
The Verdict
Twelve mellow, melodic, and emotional `date' songs wrapped up into convenient three-minute packages.
Worth the shipping and handling.......2006-02-14
With an unbelievable ability to produce incredible songs, the churchills have stolen my heart and top billing in my CD player. Each track of "The Odds of Winning" leaves you aching to hear it again, yet yearning to experience the next. Four undeniably talented men, who have the destiny to become rock icons, have somehow managed to take passion, truth, precision, grievance, beauty, humility and an overwhelming sense of musical genius, and pack it onto a disc you can listen to at anytime. Don't hesitate, buy a copy.
Simply Amazing.......2006-02-02
Before this album I had never heard any of The Churchills music. I had heard the name before, but never really checked them out. But boy am I glad I did, becuase they are amazing artists and amazing people. This is definately an album worth getting!
A Great Album by a Great Band!.......2005-12-21
The Churchills' newest release, The Odds of Winning, is filled with hit after hit. Yes, the catchy "I'm A Sucker for A Girl In Uniform" has been getting airplay across the country, but it's only the tip of the iceberg. The first three songs on the CD are definitely radio-ready with hit written all over them (Billboard Magazine agrees whole-heartedly with me on that point), but if you go deeper into the tracks, gems like the melancholy "It Only Hurts When I Breathe" and "Do You Want Me to Go Away" grab on and refuse to let go. The lyrics are much darker than their previous releases, but somehow the feel of the album is balanced out with songs with "We're All Light & Stars" and "They're Never Gonna Find Me". It's a superb follow-up to their last release, "Big Ideas".
I've heard that "Sometimes Your Best Isn't Good Enough" is the next single going to radio. Believe me, The Churchills are more than good enough.
CHURCHILLS BEST BAND 2005.......2005-08-22
THE ALBUM LIKE THEIR LAST SHOW IS PERFECT. Its awesome. Every song captured your attention and built you up to witness the tales of a year of trials and tribulations that ultimately brought our wordsmiths to the place they are at now, Home- New York City. This group of rockers have passion in their story. Their songs are top quality chart topping hits. These musicians are the best I ever met. The are great musicians and wonderful human beings.
The New York City show at The Cutting room was a great success. At 7:30 after sound check, the crowd left the bar and came into the listening room which consisted of 30 or so 4 top tables and a bar. The band came on and played for almost an hour.
The fans got to sit at the tables and sip their drinks. They had waitress service. It was really nice. Every seat was taken. It was standing room only. Everyone was really happy, they were popping out of their seats once in a while when the songs really rocked and hooting and hollering at the songs peaks, it was a powerful show! My only complaint-the hour went way too fast! I looked into the crowd serveral times and heard dozens of people singing along with every song almost. It was really great to see and hear. I am definetly looking forward to the next Churchills show.
