Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Here, unfortunately, is a simple-minded greatest hits collection from a band known for concept albums, not singles. This Arista collection will please fans of the group's best known tracks: "Carry On My Wayward Son," "Dust in the Wind," "Point of Know Return," and the maudlin 1982 hit "Play the Game Tonight." But the digital remixes of "The Wall" and "Wayward Son" from 1976's Leftoverture are superfluous (the originals sounded warmer) and the absence of any tracks from the band's self-titled debut and the excellent Masque is inexcusable, albeit commercially safe. The song sequence also leaves a lot to be desired: the jump from 1975's Genesis-like "Song for America" to the corporate pop of 1984's "Perfect Lover" is jarring at best, and does little to make the case that Kansas deserves any more than the belittled reputation they've unfortunately inherited. --James Rotondi --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

much improved collection.......2007-07-08
This is a much better version of the original 1984 release and even the later CD release.
First off I want to say something about Kansas. It still eludes me to this day why a great band like this was lumped in with such bands as Styx and Foreigner and Journey. It still bugs me to this day. Kansas was nothing like any of those bands!!
Anyway, this is a vastly improved collection from the original. It has the hits, a few choice album cuts and a great live version of Closet Chronicles which I wish they would put back into their live album where it belongs!
There are still the 80's tracks here which are not as good as the 70's stuff, but they are only two of them here. While this is not a complete collection of their good stuff it's a good place for a beginner. So if you only know their hits and want to hear a bit more of what these guys were all about, this is definitely for you.
I don't have this in my collection anymore because I have deemed it redundant and I have all these songs on CD somewhere already.
So this collection, though not complete, is still decent. Four stars for this. Recommended for the casual listener only.
Kansas stays strong over the years.......2007-06-27
In the '80s, I heard a few songs by Kansas, but never became a devoted fan. My mistake. After putting this CD into my car stereo, I really didn't want to arrive at my destination. I just wanted to finish hearing all of the songs.
Carry on Wayward Son, Dust in the Wind and Point of No Return are three that I can listen to over and over without ever getting enough.
Kerry Livgren rocks!
Kansas Wayne Gacy.......2007-04-24
What was the thing that Malachai had in the trees that he burned in the Kansas cornfields? Maybe it wasn't a scarecrow. I can't remember. I liked Malachai though. He was very serious and seemed to have a lot of concern for his cause. What was his cause? It was some kind of weird religion thing, but it was very cool.
I mean, really, if you could have done that kind of stuff after school when you were a kid, you would have the time of your life. You get off the school bus, walk home and get some Oreo cookies, and then head to the cornfields for some sacrifices and goat head choppings. These kids had a great childhood, their parents didn't even bug them or anything. Anyway, what was I talking about. Oh yeah, the band KANSAS was utterly horrible.
disappointing representation.......2007-03-16
If you have nothing by Kansas and want ONLY the hits, this is the one to get. (If you have some familiarity with their albums, drop a few extra bucks and get The Ultimate Kansas). The biggest hits are here, but the album cuts are suspect; not representing the best of their material. Hopefully you like some of them. They certainly do not suck, but could easily be replaced by some stronger choices.
Kansas is my favorite band and I would like to see them displayed in their best light. This would be my line-up for a single cd Best Of Kansas:
You're not in Kansas anymore Toto.......2007-03-10
A fine compilation of their best known tunes. If you like some fine examples of great music, then you'll like this one. Fairly unique sounds that are a good example why rock music will be timeless.

An excellent overview of a classic rock band.......2005-08-08
Kansas were one of the few American bands to whole heartedly jump on the progressive rock bandwagon. This album, originally released in 1984, brings together most of their most popular singles and key album tracks and despite the inclusion of a couple of truly wretched 80's songs is perhaps their most enjoyable. Carry On Wayward Son is their one truly transcendental song with its rousing chorus, shifting rhythms and great guitar/keyboard interplay.Other highlights are the wonderful and evocative Point of Know Return, the sublime Dust in the Wind which has become something of a standard, and to top it all, the superb Song For America which is their most exciting and fully realized progressive rock epic.
The album is somewhat marred by the predictable inclusion of a few more recent songs (Kansas were still an ongoing concern in the 80's). Especially jarring is the bland corporate rocker Fight Fire With Fire which is a depressing reminder of just how uninspired 80's rock was. While listening to 70's Kansas evokes images of trailblazing pioneers seeking new frontiers, whenever I hear that song all that is conjured up is an image of a spandex clad singer with blow-dried hair prancing around the stage like a prat.
Fortunately though, this is an excellent overview and is highly recommended.
A Lousy Recording, And Just Plain Sloppy........2005-08-04
If you are not really a big Kansas fan, and just looking for a few Kansas songs "to have", Then this recording is probably ok for you. I can tell right off that true Kansas fans probably find this collection embarassing. So embarassing in fact, that this CD has been out since the CD format was in it's infancy, and no one, until me, has bothered to review it here. True Kansas fans probably ignore the existance of this recording altogether. First off, right at the opening of "Carry On Wayward Son", the first track on the CD, you can tell something is WRONG. The echo is overpowering, something that is not part of the original recordings. It gives the CD that "Electronicaly Rechanneled To Simulate Stereo" feel that you used to only get with cheap bargain bin recordings that were beefed up from the original mono masters. It's downright annoying. Plus, 10 tracks does not do the band's retrospective justice. Even if you are not a huge Kansas fan, you may find that the way this CD was re-produced may get on your nerves. My guess is that when the CD format was new, CBS did a rush job on it's back catalogue to get some of the old LP's to market on CD. Some joker at CBS decided to throw in a little extra echo to make the record sound like they did something special for the CD release. Well, it didn't work out like they planned. And it shows. I am sure that there are other Kansas retrospectives on the market that better represent the fine work of this great band. I would suggest you seek one out, and pass this one up. This collection is better off as a distant, and very insulting, memory of how stupid some major label executives think we really are.

I wanted this disk because it had some Wilbert Harrison tracks that don't seem to be otherwise available.
But the sound is loud and 'boomy'

Sounds GREAT..........2006-11-16
I am going to review many Time-Life items that I have purchased over the years - Sounds of the 70's, Sounds of the 70's (Take Two), Legends of Rock & Roll, numerous 60's CDs & 50's CDs. The recordings are excellent and I know all the tunes - most have at least 18 songs. I would recommend any of Time-Life's compilations to anyone, who is looking for a great CD with alot of songs, we all know. The only complaint I have is that the CDs should have been maximized on the 50's & 60's selections. All in all, a very good purchase...
