Snoop's second album for the No Limit label finds him in fine form--maybe the finest since Doggystyle. On Top Dogg, Snoop has taken control of his own album; in working with a number of producers (Dr. Dre, Ant Banks, Raphael Saadiq, DJ Quick, and the Beats by the Pound team), he takes the best each has to offer and forces them to play to his own strengths. Though there are a few gangsta tracks on Top Dogg ("My Heat Goes Boom," with its "boom boom boom" chorus, is one of the album's best), the strongest songs here are the ones on which Snoop gets creative. There are a pair of tributes to Slick Rick--"Snoopafella," a Cinderella story on which Snoop aces Rickey's flow, and "G Bedtime Stories," which opens with a little kid asking "Uncle Snoop Dogg" to read him a bedtime story--and a few tracks built around classic samples (of George Clinton's "Black Hole Theme," Earth, Wind & Fire's "Shining Star," and even Brick's "Dazz"). There may not be anything here as transcendent as "Gin and Juice," but that's a minor complaint; Top Dogg is Snoop's best album in years. --Randy Silver

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Effort By Snoop Dogg, His Best Work Besides 'Doggystyle'.......2007-06-10

Snoop Dogg's catalog is not the most consistent (he has good, decent, and awful albums), but we can all agree that 'Doggystyle' is a good release. 'No Limit Top Dogg' is probably his best work besides that classic album, and despite being on No Limit, this doesn't contain the cheesy production of 'Da Game Is To Be Sold...'.

The raw, dark production on some tracks like 'Buck 'Em', '. In Love With A Thug', and the excellent single 'Down 4 My N's' (which brings back good memories of better times for me) are just what the doctor ordered, and the funky 'Snoopfella' is a top-notch return to form for Snoop. Most of the album is good, especially the laid back classic 'Gangsta Ride' and the creative 'Ghetto Symphony'. Even No Limit's goons do a great job as special guests here, and Dr. Dre provides production for tracks like 'B*tch Please' which features well-known guests Xzibit and Nate Dogg. Is this Snoop's best work? Possibly. His rhymes are great here, the beats are inspired, and even the guests are great (even though certain ones drag the album down a bit). Even if you lost faith in Snoop and someone skipped over this one, check it out. It's still worth bangin' today.

4 out of 5 stars Solid 4th Album From Tha Doggfatha (4.25 stars).......2007-05-06

As a proud owner of all Snoop's solos, 2 Eastsidaz albums and the 213 album from 2004, I can easily say this one is one of his better albums. The production on this album rocks with some dope latter day (1999) G-Funk from a bevy of dope producers. "Snoopafella" gets his story tellin' on over a sick Ant Banks (he rarely if ever dissapoints!) sampling "Dazz." "Gangsta Ride" feat Silkk The Shocker is a hot rider anthem over a bouncy Meech Wells westcoastin beat. DJ Quik heats up the boards with his melodic funk on "Buss'n Rocks" and the silky "Don't Tell" (f/ Mausberg, Nate Dogg, and Warren G). "My Heat Goes Boom" is a nice Gangsta track with Snoop kickin some real game. Snoop seems at ease and comfortable and his rhymes reflect that. A couple tracks are weak, such as the boring "Ghetto Symphony" with the No Limit homies and the overly slow "Somethin' Bout Yo Bidness," but Snoop makes up for them with tracks like the Dr. Dre banger "Just Dippin'" a nice way to bring the 2 back together over a nice laidback rider beat and the fast paced "20 Minutes" with Goldie Loc; both kick in some fast paced gangsta rhymes over a bouncy beat that could only come outta Long Beach; it was produced by Goldie Loc too. "I Love My Momma" is really self-explanatory with a nice older sounding G-Funk beat from Meech Wells. Overall, a good album by S.N. dubble O. P.

4 out of 5 stars Best since Doggystyle.......2006-01-05

In my opinion this is Snoop's second best album even today, behind you guessed it, Doggystyle. That said it isn't even close to being as good as Doggystyle, but it is still a good album and after Da Game... and the slightly dissapointing Doggfather this can be viewed as a comeback almost.

Da Game.... featured No Limit production and loads of appearances by No Limit rappers, and as a result was wack, both have been cut back here. Snoop must have put his foot down and asked to bring in his own producers for No Limit Top Dogg, including of course Dre, for the first time since Doggystyle. There are also less No Limit rappers (any is too many though) featured, but surprisingly few appearances by his old West Coast homies. Anyway best track is easily B*tch Please, which is a classic in any era, Snoop's verses are tight but Xzibit is really the star of this track, as he makes what was really his mainstream breakthrough. My other top tracks are Buck Em, Just Dippin (both Dre produced unsuprisingly), Betta Days, Down 4 my Nig*az and Trust Me. Snoop also displays his impressive storytelling abilities on Snoopafella, where he basically re-tells Cinderella from his perspective. Most of the other tracks are at least good, and the production for the most part is tight, though the album is not without filler (Gangsta Ride, In Love With A Thug).

Overall this is an impressive album from Snoop, yes it is not Doggystyle, I don't think there ever will be another one. People have the tendency to mark Snoop albums against Doggystyle, rather than on their own merit unfortunately though. I'd give it 4 stars, recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Brought the West Coast back!.......2005-09-30

B Please!

That's all I have to type to let you know how great and important this album in hip-hop was. I've since blasted Snoop for his waste of talent (and he is INCREDIBLY talented...let's not forget that!), but this CD is him and Master P actually working together to release a product that they were, no doubt, pleased with. It's good, but not the greatest thing since "Me Against the World." If you're looking for a solid Snoop album (pre his "Britney Spears years") this is one you need to add your repetoire!

3 out of 5 stars not that good.......2005-08-02

4 out of 5 stars One of his best.......2005-09-02

Listening to Rory Gallagher is a bittersweet experience. He was a tremendous guitar player. His passionate playing easily stands beside Eric Clapton and Peter Green as one of the best Anglo-Blues guitarists. It must have been frustrating for him to watch his peers rise to international stardom while he continuously slogged through tour after tour playing in clubs and smaller venues to his loyal core audience. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. His playing and writing were at their peak at this point in his career. God bless Rory Gallagher. He is sadly missed.

4 out of 5 stars Energy, passion, commitment = Rory Gallagher.......2003-02-19

Despite his fiery guitar-playing, his stunning live performances and his single-minded adherence to the true spirit of rock n roll, Rory Gallagher (from Ballyshannon in Ireland) never made the big league, never getting the full backing of his record comp any. A shame, because here is a guy who liked his blues rough and raw. Add passionate fretboard work; songwriting savvy; a high-octane, souped up Stratocaster to the formula and you have rock heaven. The keyword is energy. It literally oozes out of the speakers. Follow Me is impressive by any standards. When the rhythm section of Gerry Macavoy (bass) and Ted McKenna (drums) kicks in, the energy and power is extraordinary. Keychain, Wayward Child and Bad Penny are other highlights, with Rory laying down the blues as though he invented it, and adding to the blistering blues licks an unmistakable Celtic tone that makes Rory Gallagher a truly unique blues/rock artist. Although not all the songs on the album live up to Follow Me (and points off for the unecessary bonus tracks), and Rorys vocals are more rough and ready than accomplished, those who want an introduction to one of the worlds top blues/rock Strat-toting guns, who died just a few years ago long before his time was up, should check out Top Priority..

5 out of 5 stars Rory gave us his heart, not hype.......2002-08-07

Like Roy Buchanan and Van Gogh, Rory Gallagher was an artist who shared something real during his lifetime. Rory was an incredible blues player, but more so he rocked and vented through his playing. Let's put it this way, he influenced Schenker.

Unlike Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rory did not rely on cliche appearance nor cliche guitar licks. His voice and his guitar playing and tone were much more unique, well crafted and interesting than "SRV" or Clapton for that matter. It's not just my opinion, it's really supported by the music. If you're not familiar with Rory's music, but you seek out blues based hard rock music, than this album is what you've been looking for.

No hat, no rainbow tape on the guitar. A Marshall tone that screamed, a ballsy voice and great songs. You won't see a VH-1 story on Rory, but you'll wish you would.

Rory Gallagher is THE most underrated blues/rock guitarist in the history of the genre. This collection of songs rocks a little harder than some of his other CDs but that's fine with me. The songs are great and his vocals and guitar are second to none. Know this...there are streets named after Rory Gallagher in France and England!!! America, as usual, seems to have missed the boat on this amazing musician. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It's great,

5 out of 5 stars The missing hero..........2002-10-05

Rory Gallagher... the simple mention of this name sends shivers up my spine... The greatest straight in-your-face guitar hero ever. Owner of a potent and specially catchy rocking / bluesy voice. He released master-piece after master-pice during years! He writes all his material. He was a genius. Why death took him so soon it's a mystery (maybe too much drinking...he died soon after a liver cirurgy.

Like Gary Moore, he is another Irish master that was never truly recognized in the USA, losing market for a lot of really bad bands / artists. Well, the world was never a fair place to live...

Anyway, TOP PRIORITY rocks. Just it. It's his most heavy album. The songs are hard and strong, like he's in a hurry. The band has old-time friedn Gerra MacAvoy on bass and new drummer (who debuted in PHOTO FINISH) Ted McKenna (who would play with Michael Schenker soon after).

5 out of 5 stars My First and still favorite Rory cd.......2002-09-10

This was my first Rory album I ever bought. I remember buying
His whole catalog for 1.99 each in the cut-out bin at my local record store.Follow Me could have been an FM rock hit, The album is packed with Rockin Rory Gems, and I think this is still is most catchy album.I love all of Rory's stuff, but this and Calling Card and perhaps photo finish will always be my favorites.Rory is long gone now ,but his music will live forever. There is this new guitarist out named Victora Warne who sounds a lot like Rory and did a cover of Follow Me on her LiveAt The Savoy Cd. Definetly worth looking into !!!

    4 out of 5 stars Rockin Rory!.......2002-01-16

Rory Gallagher was the greatest guitar hero to come out of Ireland. It's a mystery why he was never as huge in America as Zepellin,Deep Purple,Clapton etc. As a performer he blew all those guys away, and was the most energetic musician I ever saw play live (opening for Rush !, what a crime, he should have headlined!). Top Priority is top Rory, a great mixture of classic rock, bar band boogie, the blues, and his great story telling songs with images of his view of legends from America (gangsters, cowboys etc.). Rory need to be in The Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame maybe more so than any other blues rock artist at this point.

3 out of 5 stars Return Of The Dog???.......2004-04-09

After listening to Snoops first No Limit release, I was very hesitant to buy another album from the Doggfather with the disgustingly large "EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: MASTER P" on the back. "No Limit Top Dogg", Snoops follow up to the dreadful "Da Game Is To Be Sold Not To Be Told" is relievingly much better. The reason for this change is simple..... limited Beats By The Pound produced tracks. Unfortunately there's still some [stuff] dropped by the pound like "Down 4 My N's" and "Ghetto Symphony". On the upside Snoop and Dre Connect as always on "Buck Em" and the hit single "B Please". Overall around half of the playlist is classic Snoop while the other percentage is just plain out boring. Snoop + No Limit just don't fit.

      5 out of 5 stars The bomb!.......1999-06-16

I think that Snoop Dogg is a very good rapper, but he will never be like Tupac. He's good anyway! This CD is a very good one!!!! Go 4 it, Snoop!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A big improvement from the last.......1999-05-23

I must say, Top Dogg is much much better than Tha Game is to be sold... With Dre and DJ Quick producing a total of 5 tracks rather than Beats by the Pound. A great CD for Snoop Fans, a bad one for No Limit fans! Not as great as Doggystyle but close.

5 out of 5 stars I would like to listen to topdog samples before buying thecd.......1999-05-22

I havent heard it yet not until I listen to the top-dog samples then I'll make my decision wether to buy it or not..........

5 out of 5 stars Snoop is da sh*t and always will be.......1999-05-14

      1 out of 5 stars Lil Who?.......2005-05-17

First off I am a No Limit fan and almost every CD they put out sold and had good promotion before it ever droped. But the mistake with this CD was it had none of that! He wasn't on no other No Limit CD's before he came out and had no prior promotion. It was like, hey heres a No Limit CD. I should buy it because its from No Limit. Don't buy this! Get it from someone for free. Its not even worth that!

4 out of 5 stars impressive solo cd, but...........2005-05-05

though it just aint like when he was 'G-Note' in the Vallejo based rap duo Funk Mobb. Be sure to pick up 'It Aint 4 play'. G-note displays his fullest skills. No Limit groupies as well should soak this album up n recognize bay area game. And i gotta say that this wasn't your TYPICAL no limit album so why the hatin? Killafornia, What U Gone Do & a grip of cuts was on some real west coast sh*t. k-lou beats still SLAP!

1 out of 5 stars Sharing the Love.......2004-05-24

When these four little scamps get together, they're worse than a sewing circle. Each one on his own is bad enough, but put all of them in one recording studio and suddenly you've got a homoerotic love-fest going on. Much of the resulting album consists of little more than grunting and groaning as they all "get it on" with each other. Then, every once in a while, one of them remembers they're supposed to be making a "rap" album and starts semi-rhyming about glocks and "poppin' a cap in dat nigga's ass", at which point the others giggle knowingly.

I'm not homophobic or anything, but frankly I found the entire thing disgusting and utterly out of step with what I understand rap to be all about.

Next time, guys, get it all out of your system in a hotel room before you set foot in a recording studio. Remember, you are supposed to be bringing a positive message to the community about guns, whores, crack, and bling bling. This is no time for you to be celebrating "Greek" love.

4 out of 5 stars Great Debut, worth every penny.......2004-01-28

Lil Italy's debut was indeed groundbreaking. The album starts with the track "Ghetto Fame" which he and Silkk The Shocker rip through verses like kids getting free lunch. Amongst the albums highlights include "We Aint Hard 2 Find", "Bodicussy", "Power", & "Down N Dirty" It is well worth the money, Just get a used one.

3 out of 5 stars Lil' Italy needs some work!!.......2003-09-27

This Cd was ok. I love all No Limit Cd's, but, this could have been A LOT better!! Some of his songs are good, such as, "Ghetto Fame", "Doggs Ride", and "Down-N-Dirty". All the others are ok, but could have had some work done on them. It's a CD you should have in your No Limit collection.
