Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

I'm not sure if one would call this a side-project, or supergroup, but it's a good listen. Members are from other bands such as Suicidal Tendencies, Metallica, and Jane's Addiction among others. To my ears, this basically sounds like a funkier version of Suicidal. I'd say it's a must listen for ST fans. Call it....funk-rock. It a bass slappin', drum poundin', yelling good time. Get it if you see it, as it's out of print at the moment.

What happens when you take the bass virtuosity of Rob Trujillo (ex-Suicidal Tendencies, later joined Metallica), the vocal stylings of Mike Muir (Suicidal Tendencies), multiple guest drummers (including Stephen Perkins of Porno For Pyros and studio drummer Josh Freese of Vandals and A Perfect Circle fame), and even more guest guitarists and miscellaneous instrumentalists, throw them into a blender on the 'puree' setting with a gallon of funk and a few quarts of punk/metal?

You get Infectious Grooves.

It's funky, it's rocking. It makes you dance and it makes you bang your head. That's what Infectious Grooves is all about.. groovin' and rockin'.

The strongest element of the album, naturally, is the incredible bass work of one Rob Trujillo. Rob shows his true colors on this album, always laying down the solid groove and occasionally stepping outside of the pocket to display incredible work with both the left and right hands. The guest guitarists on the album are all of a high level of musicianship. The title track has an incredibly sick-sounding guitar solo that is usually only heard amongst the likes of talent such as Steve Vai or John Petrucci.

The only downfall of the album is that Mike Muir has never been what I would consider a "good vocalist". He is, however, very fitting to the Infectious Grooves sound. The songs are all humorous, both musically and lyrically. Muir does a great job of keeping you laughing, whether it is his classic funk "Hey hey hey's" or the ridiculous lyrics ("You lie.. and yo breath stank.. smells just like.. a septic tank.") The skits, may I add, are amusing the first time around but the novelty quickly wears off. I was also a bit irked that the album ended with a skit track as opposed to an actual song.

If you like funk and are open to experimentation, I highly recommend this album. Being an individual who has an undying love for both funk and metal, this album is extremely appealing to me.

I reiterate.. HIGHLY recommended.

I'll make this short and sweet: GET IT, IT'S ONLY $4.00!! Being a big fan of Suicidal at the time, I've had this since it came out in 1991. I hadn't listened to it for years, even though I knew it was really good. Well, today I resurrected it, and holy moly it's really good. Super bass funkiness, catchy hooks, addictive riffs, sing-a-long refrains...maybe that doesn't sound good but it really is! And funny too. Like I said, this is a lost gem in my collection.

In my opinion Sarssipius Ark's is better (the sound quality and mix is better).
Try to hear "Feed the monkey" or "Stop funk'n with my head". Yeah!! I like it so much!!!!!
I think all Infetious Grooves CDs are excellent. Buy them if you like funk, metal distortion & riffs and a "bass in your face" sound.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

This is music-making of the highest calibre and a great selection of songs. Ernestine is so soulful in her approach and the rhythm section lay down incredible grooves with Ray driving from below and Monty delivering some remarkable solos as in "Old Folks" or "Poor Butterfly". This is also model comping- colorful, rhythmically alive but without getting in the way. This music is incredibly overlooked and should be in every jazz lover's library. Also excellent from the same period is "Sunshine" also on Concord which is for now out of print. Highly recommended for anyone who just loves good music.

My uncle presented this album to me when I was about 15 and becoming a serious piano player. It blew me away. I heard the piano being played in a way that affected me for the rest of my life. Monte Alexander is one of the best jazz players around. This is happy, clean jazz that doesn't twist your brain into a knot. This recording features vocals, piano, stand-up bass, and drums. That's it - clean, simple, perfect. When I wore out the record, I bought the cd and I just cherish it, along with my Vince Guaraldi Christmas cd.

"Make Your Move" was a departure of sorts for Captain and Tennille: A new image and record company and another #1 hit (Do That To Me One More Time) make this a very enjoyable adult contemporary album and their most coeshive album until "Keeping Our Love Warm". All the songs here run over 4 minutes. The highlights are the Toni Tennille penned "Deep In The Dark" and "Do That To Me One More Time" plus the far-out version of "Happy Together" (a total trip).

This is an excellent re-mastered version of their 1979 album. I always wondered how C&T wound up on the disco-heavy Casablanca label. Toni explains it in the brief (but great) liner notes: the label prez assured them they'd have another hit. Well, they did.

What we get is some of the best pop music of the late 70s. The eight tracks include the #1 "Do That To Me One More Time" plus the shoulda been bigger singles "Love On A Shoestring" and "Happy Together (A Fantasy)" . "Baby You Still Got It" has got to be the best ballad Toni's written after "Do That To Me One More Time". The inventive casbah arrangement on "Happy Together" is over-the-top but fun. As the Amazon review states, this is a more adult offering from C&T. Fans will be thrilled and those not familiar with the duo might be surprised.

The disc itself has a clear, even sound. I have C&T's "Scrapbook" CD from Germany (which includes many of the songs from "Make Your Move") that seems to have distorted bass on a few sections. Nothing like that here. The booklet includes session players for each track, Toni's liner notes and pics of the original Casablanca releases -- including the 8-track tape. My only gripe is that the jewel case is housed in a slipcase cover that has the original cover art while the booklet has a different picture taken from the same photo sessions. No lyrics are re-printed.

Overall, it's nice to finally have "Make Your Move" on disc...and it's about time.

5 out of 5 stars The Captain & Toni: Making A Move.......2005-10-28

This album represents a significant shift in the career of Captain & Tennille. Daryl lost the captain's hat and Toni turned blonde--successfully shedding the "bubble gum pop" image that plagued them. There is serious musicianship on this album: saxophones, piano, guitar, and plenty of music solos. Toni Tennille wrote 4 of the 8 tracks on this album, including the million-seller, "Do That To Me One More Time". Tennille's vocals and the musical production on this album are top notch. Though there are only 8 tracks on this album, all of the songs are 5 minutes or over (with the exception of "Do That To Me One More Time", which is just over 4 minutes).

This album reached the top 30 in album sales in 1979 and 1980, with the help from the singles, "Happy Together (A Fantasy)" and "Love On A Shoestring". Toni's vocals are superb throughout the album and demonstrate, as one reviewer has noted, "why she made such a connection" with the pop audience. There's a touch of soul in her vocals that may surprise those whose only outing with Captain & Tennille has been "Love Will Keep Us Together" or "Muskrat Love".

Suprise cut: "Never Make A Move Too Soon", featuring an all-out party/jam session feel. This song starts out slowly, but quickly builds to a rocking climax as Toni sings about a lover who "turns up found" when she "strikes it rich".

Pure pop gold. Highly recommended.

My over-all impression was basically "if this is all they were going to do, why'd they even bother?" If I could, I'd give it 2.5 stars, but I found it too annoying to deserve 3.

This album gets off to a good start, with Stress. Unfortunately, in my opinion, that's its highlight. I almost liked Angry White Guy, but he basically ruined it, by rapping like a white guy who's trying to sound black (especially with that poor excuse for a black twang). I have no problem with a white guy rapping - even one that sounds like a black guy - as long as he's good at it!

Musically, the band sounded alright, but nothing extrordinary. In some cases, I'd listen to an entire track, waiting for something (musically) to happen - but it just never really got going. It sounded a lot like the average no-name band, which they even joke about, in the self-effacing Boston Band. But the real problem isn't there.

My biggest complaint is that I didn't much care for the lyrics, which generally try to sound too smart, or vocals, which frequently sound a bit forced. Basically, I guess I just can't get past Jim's big ego.

5 out of 5 stars It's like Musical Prozac!.......2000-12-21

Last year, I had never heard of Jim Infantino, or Jim's Big Ego. I reluctantly agreed to go with a friend of mine to see the band at the Natick Cultural Arts Center...and fell head over heels in love with these guys. I've tried several times to describe JBE to friends, but they're difficult to pigeon hole. They roll from Rock, to Folk, to Rap, to Alterna-Pop and back again without batting an eyelash. Their lyrics are thought-provoking social commentary disguised as fluff that's fun to sing along with.

Jim's Big Ego acheives a rarity in the music world - every song on this CD is worth listening to again and again and again. Check out a few of the clips, and then buy the CD with confidence.
