Ask anyone who grew up in the '70s and they'll tell you: hard rock ain't what it used to be. Need proof? Compare the real thing and their '90s counterparts on this soundtrack from a movie about four kids trying to sneak into a sold-out Kiss concert. Kiss contributes the title track and "Shout It Out Loud," two prime blasts of 1976 hard rock. The Donnas can only copy the painted ones' "Strutter." Everclear cruises by the numbers through Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back in Town," while Pantera traces Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever." When Marilyn Manson attempts to put its own stamp on AC/DC's "Highway to Hell," the results are pretentious and boring, lacking all the kinetic excitement of the original. If the truth be told, nearly all the highlights are the original songs: Van Halen's goofy yet dexterous "Runnin' with the Devil," Black Sabbath's rumbling "Iron Man," Cheap Trick's masterfully silly call to arms "Surrender," and Thin Lizzy's deadly and virile "Jailbreak." No matter what technological advances you make, you can't beat a genre in its prime. --Rob O'Connor --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

The Actual Soundtrack.......2007-05-28
I agree with the other reviewers who note that the soundtrack was missing most of the great songs from the movie. Reviewer J. Darwin listed a very impressive soundtrack listing which captures nearly all of the great rock songs from the film. I took on the challenge of capturing virtually all of the songs played during the movie, in the order that they appear. This includes background song clips on the radio, that were confirmed in the closing credits. Here goes:
I Stole Your Love -- KISS
Rock & Roll All Night -- MYSTERY
Love Gun -- KISS
Cat Scratch Fever -- TED NUGENT
20th Century Boy -- T-REX
Funk No. 49 -- JAMES GANG
Conjunction Junction -- BOB DOROUGH
Ladies Room -- KISS
Lights Out -- UFO
Little Willy -- SWEET
School Days -- THE RUNAWAYS
Jailbreak -- THIN LIZZY
Shout It Out Loud -- KISS
Frankenstein -- THE EDGAR WINTER GROUP
Makin' It -- DAVID NAUGHTON
Wild and Hot -- ANGEL
The Boys Are Back In Town -- THIN LIZZY
Radar Love -- GOLDEN EARRING
Iron Man -- BLACK SABBATH
Problem Child -- AC/DC
Christine Sixteen -- KISS
Turn To Stone -- ELO
Surrender -- CHEAP TRICK
I Wanna Be Sedated -- THE RAMONES
Escape (The Pina Colada Song) -- RUPERT HOLMES
Highway To Hell -- AC/DC
Black Magic Woman -- SANTANA
Every 1's a Winner -- HOT CHOCOLATE
Rebel Rebel -- DAVID BOWIE
Convoy -- WC McCALL
Shock Me -- KISS
Godzilla -- BLUE OYSTER CULT
Fox On the Run -- SWEET
Boogie Shoes -- KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND
Strutter -- KISS
Blitzkreig Bop -- THE RAMONES
Popcorn -- HOT BUTTER
Beth -- KISS
Fire -- OHIO PLAYERS
Muskrat Love -- CAPTAIN & TENNILLE
Calling Dr. Love -- KISS
Come Sail Away -- STYX
Rock Your Baby -- GEORGE McCRAE
Whole Lotta Rosie -- AC/DC
Love Hurts -- NAZARETH
Runnin' With the Devil -- VAN HALEN
Love To Love -- UFO
Detroit Rock City (Live) -- KISS
The Boys Are Back In Town -- EVERCLEAR
Highway To Hell -- MARILYN MANSON
Nothing Can Keep Me From You -- KISS
There you have it. 51 songs. "Love Gun" by Kiss appears a second time in the movie just before the 8-Track tape gets creamed on the Interstate. There is a song playing in the Radio Station elevator as the guys go to pick up their tickets that I can't make out, so that is missing. I also replaced Mystery with Kiss on "Rock & Roll All Night". My 3-CD set of the true soundtrack is complete. Great movie. If you're up to the challenge, make that true soundtrack!! Rock on.
Detroit Rock City: Music From The Motion Picture.......2007-05-07
The music in the soundtrack brought back wonderful memories of when music had some teeth.
Thanks J. Darwin.......2007-03-19
Great list with original artists. I can't believe they are selling the soundtrack with remakes. Looks like I'm off to iTunes to see if I can find all these songs. Thanks again.
where's the others?.......2006-03-22
My Wife got Me this soundtrack a few years ago and I took it straight back. The problem is it's missing about 50 songs that were in the movie, and the B.o.c. song Godzilla (from the album Spectres) is NOT sung by B.O.C. If all songs were included this would be the coolest soundtrack ever, but it's not.
The Way the Soundrack SHOULD Be.......2006-01-10
I give this soundtrack 2 stars because it still has some great songs on it. However, whoever compiled it did two things wrong: 1) The left off so many other great songs from the movie, and 2) They have covers of these classic songs instead of the originals? For shame. Well, and also because they have Marilyn Manson doing ANYTHING at all. Someone who sucks as bad as him should not even be allowed in the same room as ACDC, much less allowed to cover their song. Anyway, if you ask me, the soundtrack should read as follows:
"Love Gun" by KISS
"Funk #49" by the James Gang
"Lights Out" by UFO
"Little Willy" by Sweet
"School Days" by the Runaways
"Jailbreak" by Thin Lizzy
"Shout It Out Loud" by KISS
"Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter Group
"The Boys Are Back In Town" by Thin Lizzy
"Rock & Roll All Nite" by KISS
"Iron Man" by Black Sabbath
"Problem Child" by ACDC
"Surrender" by Cheap Trick
"I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones
"Highway to Hell" by ACDC
"Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult
"Fox On the Run" by Sweet
"Strutter" by KISS
"Blitzkrieg Bop" by the Ramones
"Calling Dr. Love" by KISS
"Come Sail Away" by Styx
"Whole Lotta Rosie" by ACDC
"Love Hurts" by Nazareth
"Running With the Devil" by Van Halen
"Detroit Rock City" by KISS
Write this list down and download the songs this way. It's so so so much better. The actual soundtrack that plays during the movie, I give 5 stars.

Not much to say, it's just great record. I listen to it all the time.It always cheers me up.
Killy City............2002-03-02
~ I'm sick of keeping quiet, and I am the wild boy,
If I'm gonna die here, first I'm gonna make some noise...~
Anyone who can write lyrics like this, is ok with me. Iggy, Iggy, Iggy. It's easy to bash this cd, you know, the production values aren't great. But LISTEN TO IT!! Considering he was on "sick leave" from the mental ward, his voice is great. Johanna rates as one of the all-time best "love songs" along with "sell your love." It's Iggy down on the street, and bruising, but no one does it better than he does, IMHO.
I am a huge Iggy fan, and I've followed him around for 20 years. It's not mere *love * it's an addiction. And it hasn't killed me yet. I have ALL his albums- and this is one of my stand-out favourites. great Sunday morning music. Don't give up on it. Give it a listen, and you will understand why he's one of the masters of the underground. He was there, before you were a gleam in your mama's eyes!!
*peace* Diane.
Mental Neon.......2001-08-25
Along with New Values, Kill City is some of his best stuff. Too bad you can't get the CD in the green vinyl color! I know a lot of people think his Stooges days where best. I lived through those recordings when they came out, and never cared for any of it. Kill City is patchy at times, but it works in it's favore! The music is great, and emotion behind the lyrics is genuine. When I listen to this, I feel transported to a dank motel room with flashing neon outside the window. I also love those synthesizer solos. Just plain cool!
Terrible, terrible, terrible.......2001-06-21
Well, what's there to say? The Stooges, along with Burzum, the Birthday Party, Darkthrone and the Misfits ('77-83 R.I.P.) are some of the most vicious, emotion-raping, raw music of all time. This album was and is a dismal failure as a follow up recording to the Stooges' legacy. It was released after a couple of Iggy's soft-bellied solo releases, but follows Raw Power chronologically on the Iggy timeline. That said, it has several redeeming values - probably more contextually than musically. First of all, it was this album that lead Bomp! records to release some of the harder to find classics in a slightly remastered form. Secondly, the album contains several original classics - the title track being one, and the other one being Night Theme (Reprise) which is a nice, peaceful little ditty featuring Williamson and buddies playing a plethora of world instruments. The most important tracks on this album, however, are the studio versions of the Stooges' unreleased tracks "I got nothing" & "Johanna." "I Got . . " shows up in a slower, less impassioned incarnation than on the Stooges' bootlegs. "Johanna" similarly is played in a slower, funkier manner than on the Stooges' bootlegs, and is destroyed but the presence of a horrible G.E. Smith style sax being played over it. Bomp! were wise enough to put this versions SANS sax on the Stooges' bootleg/best of comp "year of the iguana" - I highly recommend you buy that release that you might get some idea of what this song should have sounded like. Overall, a dreadful, but gravely important release.
a patchwork masterpiece.......2000-10-30
This LP was initially recorded in 1975 at a time when the Ig had himself confined to an "insane asylem" (his own description). During a weekend leave he recorded the vocal tracks. Jimmy Williamson recorded the music in 1977! This album is a patchwork job & Iggy doesn't recognise it as an official studio effort. It's still a masterpiece, however. Especially the title track and "consolation prizes". Other great moments include "beyond the law", and two unused Stooges "I got nothin" and "Johanna". Funny, but two of my favorite LPs of the 70s-this and Alice Cooper's "From the Inside" (1978)-were recorded as results of stays in mentin health hospitles!

Klassical KISS..........2004-06-25
KISS tribute albums started cropping up more than a decade ago very quickly oversaturating this market with a multitude of cds of varying quality (Hard To Believe, KISS of Death, Spacewalk). Now comes a tribute cd that offers a fresh and unique take on old KISS classics. Classical orchestration has long been a staple of KISS' repertoire, going back to the string ensemble used for the mega-hit Beth in 1976 progressing to the orchestral leanings and gregorian style chanting of the Elder album (1981) to the symphonic version of Black Diamond on their official KISS My A** tribute album to 2003's full blown KISS Symphony project.
This quartet interprets both well known KISS tunes (Detroit Rock City, Rock and Roll All Night) and more obscure material (Goin' Blind). Some of the choices are downright offbeat, a string quartet version of the funky Ace Frehley number New York Groove...surely you jest...but what is remarkable is how well it works.
Undisputed highlights are the beautiful renditions of Hard Luck Woman, Goin' Blind and Beth. The quartet incorporates subtle new parts that compliment these well loved melodies tremendously. Love Gun and I Was Made For Lovin' You are extremely powerful renditions also, if not just a little too reminiscent of the KISS Symphony cd and dvd. Even overplayed numbers like Calling Dr.Love and Rock and Roll All Nite are given new life by this incredibly talented ensemble.
From the Rock and Roll Over album influenced cover art to the last strains of New York Groove, this unique tribute cd is a winner all the way.
From a (classic) KISS and Classical music Fan!.......2004-04-23
EXCELLENT! I just bought this CD, and have already listened to it a half dozen times. I am a HUGE fan from the classic KISS years (1974-1979 - the years with Peter and Ace in the group).
If you are a KISS fan, and also like string quartet music, you will love this. If you are a fan of either (KISS or string quartet music), you will have a better appreciation and like for both after purchasing and hearing this CD.
These guys give the correct respect to classic KISS performance and it is especially seen in the string harmonies, and Ace's guitar solos in each song (except of course "Beth" which didn't have a solo by Ace until the "Unplugged" CD). The only down side of this are the songs that aren't on it, but hopefully that will mean a Volume 2!
GREAT CD!

What a guitar player!.......2003-09-14
The Motor City Madman is one of the best guitar player of all time, and his is a collection of songs from his first 7 albums. All the songs are some what good but I would only recomend this to big Nugent fans, because the albums are a lot better then this, but if you are a really big Nug fan then you must get this. But I personaly would recomend getting his first albums Ted Nugent, Cat Scratch Fever, and Scream Dream because on those albums the band really shines. This isnt that band either though. But I would not recomend this.
This is why he didn't make the Rolling Stone Mag Top 100.......2003-08-30
More vain glorious rantings from a guy who lost any music sense when he stopped listening to others. Narcissism personified.
Zee Wang-go zee tang-go!.......2001-01-14
Made in USA in 1996 Serial#A-28066 Playing Time: 39 mins.
A compilation of material up to his 7th album, "Scream Dream", this compilation is way too short and excludes "essential" tracks from his days with the SONY label.
It's worth getting (used) if you're unfamiliar with his work, and for a bit more money, you can get the "Expanded Editions" of his first few albums.
Some in-your-face guitar performances, with lyrics like "You have to pretend your face is a Maserati"
It deserves 3-and-a-half stars, because it simply rocks!
Awesome music but not his "best".......2000-02-19
Skip this "best of" (hardly) CD. Taken on its own, the music on the disc is great but it does not represent Nugent's "best" (it fails to include his two most popular songs -"stranglehold" and "cat scratch fever"). If you are looking for a hit package I would suggest that you pick up "super hits", "great gonzos", or better yet, the "out of control" 2 disc set (this in the only "best of" collection that contains the legendary "great white buffalo").
The Pre-VanHalen American Guitar Hero of the 70's.......1998-12-06
Going way back to the wide-leg post-woodstock years of the 70's, the Motor City Madman was undisputably THE American guitar hero of the decade for legions of pubescent teens before a certain Eddie somebody showed up in late 1977 to swipe his crown. Ted's mouth that runneth over in concert and in interviews was new and exciting in a subdued time way before he was known as a right-wing wacko. The "voice" of this LP is the under-appreciated Derek St. Holmes who gives Ted the needed heart - or "ying" - to Ted's gonzo "yang". Had Ted not been so autocratic and shared the spotlight with the rest of the band featured on this landmark recording, they might have stayed together and been a supergroup for the ages, but they only stuck it out for 3 great studio albums which will always light up testosterone-filled memories for me and millions of other teen boys at that time who lived their lives according to the gospel of St. Ted's ode to the fair sex: "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang."

Solid live album.......2007-05-05
This review seems as good a spot as any to point out the obvious vocal genius of Scott Morgan. FINALLY, through this album, the SRB box set, Powertrane, and his collaborations with Nicke from the Hellacopters Scott is starting to get the high visibility and respect he deserves as a TOTALLY GREAT rock and soul singer. This live album is a momento from a European tour shared with Radio Birdman guitarist Deniz Tek (backed by an Italian rhythm section and guitarist who also do a great job) and the set is a mixture of Birdman, Powertrane, Sonic's Rendezvous Band, and Tek's solo material. Wish they'd done a better job on the artwork, but it's the music that counts and there are no complaints there.
Get It While You Can YOU NEED IT!.......2004-07-15
More white-hot rock and roll from Scott Morgan and crew. Scott has been especially active in the last few years, having gotten together with Deniz Tek from Radio Birdman for a couple of projects. He's also teamed with The Hellacopters and has formed three bands: Hydromatics, Powertrane and The Solution. The Hydromatics perform High Energy originals and covers of GREAT Sonic's Rendezvous band tunes (many you can hear on this one-off conglomeration "Three Assasins". Scott is the perfect man to cover the SRB material, as he was up front sharing the spotlight with Fred "Sonic" Smith in the SRB!
This will eb a rare CD and it many not be the BEST of Scotts work in the last few years, it still outshines 99% of all CD's released in the last decade.
GOod Stuff. Try to find the Hydromatics CD's and you'll have the best Scott Morgan has to offer these days.
