Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-01-19

Essential Baroque is a great collection, especially for the price. It has two CDs packd full of the best Baroque music. Like most Baroque collections, it has the best of some of the better known artists like Handel, Bach, and Vivaldi. However, unlike most other collections, it excels in adding some good pieces from lesser known artists from the period.

    4 out of 5 stars A remarkable anthology.......2005-09-08

A fine selection of pieces excerpted from the chamber ensemble, solo and opera repertory. Some recordings, though from paramount artists, are elderly; yet, performers are anyway flawless. It may be objected that a few of Vivaldi's masterpieces were disregarded.

5 out of 5 stars High-quality, marvelously varied intro to baroque music.......2003-12-13

I am buying this as the perfect gift for Russian and Chinese scientist friends. They have knowledge of classical music but perhaps not much about baroque music, which achieved special popularity in the U.S. during the 1970's and 1980's. Russians seem to have more familiarity with romantic classical music, while the more recently arrived Asian classical buffs have special affinity to the "Classical" classical period and the great 19th Century romantics. How can a baroque sampler be better than with a span of music ranging from solo harpsichord to full orchestra and chorus, and from the very familiar (Pachelbel Canon and Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah) to a trio sonata by Zelenka and the Dardanus Overture by Rameau. Not only that, but both the period instrument and living tradition baroque styles are represented by noted performers (e.g. Trevor Pinnock and Christopher Hogwood; and Henryk Szeryng, Andras Schiff, Pepe Romero, and Alicia de Larrocha, respectively). The producers were careful enough to state that the "Albinoni Adagio in g minor" was actually composed by Remo Giazotto - though in fact Giazotto did use a fragment of Albinoni. This is definitely not a supermarket special, but a box of choice musical bonbons.

    Amazon.com essential recording

With the face of an angel and the determination of a telemarketer on commission, Dolly Parton is a mountain miracle, a world-class poet in a fright wig and stiletto heels. This early collection bypasses her Monument Records beginnings as a backwoods hopeful, but follows her arrival as a hillbilly savant ("Coat of Many Colors," "My Tennessee Mountain Home"), to her metamorphosis as a glitzy pop superstar ("Here You Come Again"). While it omits her duets with her Svengalian mentor, Porter Wagoner, most of the songs that forged her reputation as a songwriter are here ("Jolene," the original version of "I Will Always Love You"), even as it overlooks her underrated classics ("My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy," "Down from Dover"). With such clear-eyed, evocative writing, born on the breath of her shimmering soprano, it's easy to see how young Dolly turned the heads of country-rockers Emmylou Harris and Maria Muldaur, let alone the Grand Ole Opry set. --Alanna Nash

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I really got the feeling that it's all right (excellent).......2003-04-02

It took me a long time to get to a point where I know that I have nearly all of her songs, which are all beautiful, uplifting and in many cases supurb. Most everything she did is now in print starting with the superb Essential Series compilations. The Essential Series were the first sign that RCA was beginning to recognize that their forgotten country superstars had a substantial amount of material out of print. Much of this has been recovered on the "The Essential Volume 1", "The Essential Volume 2" and "The Essential Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton"-all truly essential to real fans.

I waited impatiently for this long awaited 1997 release. Finally on CD were long forgotten hits such as her first #1 smash "Joshua" from 1970 and the Billy Vera penned "I Really Got The Feeling" from her 1978 LP "Heartbreaker" and, of course, the title track which spent three weeks on the top of the country charts and hit #37 Pop. Not to mention other notable reissues including the original version of "Light Of A Clear Blue Morning", the "Stairway to Heaven" inspired "We Used To", catchy and pure fun "All I Can Do" and the haunting "Me And Little Andy" that once graced the 1982 Greatest Hits LP. This is a perfect hits collection from the late 1960's to 1978, but chart success alone overlooked some of her very best including the amazing "My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy" that failed to reach the country Top 40 in 1969. Also omitted from the album was Dolly's disco dud "Baby I'm Burnin'" that reached #25 Pop but still appears on other compilations.

No doubt, though, is that this is an impressive collection that captures exactly what made Dolly Parton the incredible superstar she is. Her angelic voice can turn any song into something special and is definitely worth owning.

    5 out of 5 stars A National Treasure!.......2003-03-17

Dolly Parton's lyrical ways are a gift to the Nation and the World. She is an amazingly gifted songwriter and entertainer. This beautiful collection of work has a little rebellious streak running throughout. I listen to it often.

5 out of 5 stars The songs that made Dolly famous.......2002-09-05

The first volume of Essential Dolly Parton focuses on her eighties hits (including her 1982 re-recording of I will always love you) and also includes Two doors down, so it's not here. Yet another volume, The essential Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton, covers their duets, so none of them are here.

This second volume of her solo recordings includes some of her most successful recordings from the sixties and seventies, including her original 1973 recording of I will always love you.

All the other classic country songs from the mid-seventies are here - Jolene, Love is like a butterfly, The bargain store, The seeker, My tennessee mountain home - together with her first solo top 20 hit (Just because I'm a woman), her first big hit (Mule skinner blues, a cover of the Jimmie Rodgers classic) and her first #1 record (Joshua).

Coat of many colors, also included here, was based on a real incident. Dolly was once sent to school wearing a coat made of differently-colored rags woven together and all the other children (not surprisingly) laughed at her. A picture of her in that coat featured on the original LP cover.

Other great country recordings here include Touch your woman, We used to, All I can do and Wings of a dove. Another great song, Light of a clear blue morning, showed Dolly was looking for something new, and the other tracks featured here represent some of her pop-sounding records from 1977 and 1978.

Of these tracks, I love Baby I'm burning (which some think is Dolly's worst recording, but it's a great slice of country disco), Here you come again, Me and little Andy and It's all wrong but it's all right. I have never been able to get excited about Heartbreaker and I really got the feeling, but I've got used to them over a quarter of a century.

Despite my lack of enthusiasm for two songs, the other eighteen make this is an outstanding compilation which certainly lives up to it's Essential name.

5 out of 5 stars Volume 2, But In Actuality Her Earliest, Best Hits.......2001-06-20

Most of Dolly Parton's RCA catalog of hits has long been available and in a mind boggling variety of combinations. A lot of these collections are of the nine and ten track assortment that RCA was notorious for thrusting upon the public. Before the Essential series came along, the best Parton retrospective was 1993's two-disc, thirty track The RCA Years (1967-86). The RCA Years skimped on Parton's second decade with RCA and that may be why they choose to put out her later hits as the first Essential Parton volume. The Essential Dolly Parton, Volume 2 captures all of the early hits that deservedly made Parton a country MUSIC legend such as "Jolene," "Coat Of Many Colors" and "I Will Always Love You." Some of them, like her first number one, the rousing "Joshua" and the reflective "We Used To" had been left off previous Parton CD sets (until now). With a pair of moving gospel performances, "The Seeker" and "Wings Of A Dove," to end the disc, country fans finally have a truly special Parton set.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Says it All.......2001-06-11

The Essential Series celebrates an artist's biggest hits. Since Dolly has so many hits, this is Volume II. While Volume I was like any other Dolly greatest hits collection, filled with the pop gems and crossover hits, this one concentrates on her country roots and country hits from her lenghtly career. Everything from The Bargain Store to Light of a Clear Blue Morning, Touch Your Woman to Me & Little Andy, Coat of Many Colors to My Tennessee Mountain Home, Joshua to Heartbreaker, and so much more, many of her hits are covered here. This is probably one of her more complete collections, so if you are tired of the collections that only feature her pop hits, this is your cd. Might I reccomend Legendary, a 3 cd set that has 50 of her biggest hits, probably the closest we will get to a complete Dolly collection for now.

2 out of 5 stars Not as essential as you would think.......2004-06-11

The "music fan from CA" is right: most of this music is obscure for a reason. It's simply not very good. After the incredible ESSENTIAL PEBBLES VOL. 1, where every single track was a surefire winner culled from the first 10 CD volumes of the PEBBLES series, I was really looking forward to popping this into my CD player. Unfortunately this was a major let-down; selecting songs from the PEBBLES LP's that haven't seen CD release yet, if these are the best of those, I'm not looking forward to those LP's seeing the light of the digital age.

The few good songs include: The Rogues' "How Many Times", Neal Ford and the Fanatics' "Shame on You", The Jelly Bean Bandits' "Generation", Sonny Flaherty and the Mark V's "Hey Conductor", The Live Wires' "Love", The Inmates' "More Than I Have", The Kama Del Sutras' "She Taught Me Love", and The Sweet Acids' "That Creature". That's 8 out of 26 songs that you'll find yourself glad you listened to. The rest are disposable.

If it's possible, the CD starts out at a good pace and each song progressively gets worse as the running time gets longer. Do yourself a favor and wear out your ESSENTIAL PEBBLES VOL. 1 CD rather than even consider the idea of purchasing this one. For hardcore completists only, who I expect will probably only give it a listen and toss it onto their shelf to collect dust.

Disc 2 holds some minor interest to collectors, as all 29 songs have never been reissued anywhere. Tracks actually worth hearing are: The Purple Haze's "Shades of Blue", The Dawn 5's instrumental "Mike's Bag", Denny Noie and the Catalinas' "It Ain't a Big Thing", The Fading Tribesmen's "More Feathers", and The Spires of Oxford's "But You're Gone". However, none of these songs are even all that memorable. Again, like CD 1, each song gets progressively worse as the disc goes on.

All in all, this is a supremely disappointing package that only hardcore completists will want to add to their collection. "Essential" is the one word that will NOT pop into your mind while listening to this misfire collection.

    3 out of 5 stars Obscure for a reason.......2000-12-27

I picked this up because I already own the original Nuggets album, the original Pebbles Vol. 1 vinyl album, and the Rhino Nuggets box set. I liked most (not all) of the songs on those albums, and the good stuff on those was really good. I thought that this CD would be more of the same good stuff.

Well...some of it is salvageable, but I am sad to report that most of these are obscure for a reason: namely, they stink! Unfortunately, there are very, very few undiscovered gems on these 2 CDs. Most of it is stuff by bands that very much deserved their obscurity. These songs are very inferior to the best garage rock of the '60s -- sometimes painfully inferior.

There are an absolute ton of recycled Yardbirds and Kinks riffs here -- and a little of those go a long, long way. (The cover of "I'm a Man" by the Baker St. Irregulars is a good example of a cover version that makes me want to scream "Give it up, guys!" and sends me scrambling for my original, vastly superior Yardbirds version of the song.)

    Only for serious archaeologists.

    5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2000-09-16

Picking up where volume 1 leaves off, "Pebbles Vol. 2" continues to dig deep into the bowels of garage rock to find the tastiest leftovers from those bands with no names, and what a collection it is!

Very few Beatles clone bands made it like the Knickerbockers, the Beau Brummels, or small bands like the Gants, did, but what the collection showcases is that whether in NYC or LA or a town of 50 people, the music was infectious, and the results are pure magic. Their names may be lost to history, but the music lives on, and its MAGIC to listen to!

Brian Eno once said that very few people listened to the Velvet Underground, but they all went out and formed a band because of them.. who knows, perhaps these tasty nuggets of Anglophiled Americana will cause the next great wave in music, as well..and it couldn't happen soon enough!!

    Mange and bon appetit!!

I bought this volume II from Nina Simone along with her volume I from her essential. We have so many divas but there's only one I can recommend you to devote with. And she must be Miss Nina Simone through this collection with (specially( her two massive songs, (late)George Harrison's composition'Here Comes The Sun' and Paul Anka's composition 'My Way'. She also incredibly sang Terry Kirkman's 'Cherish' for us. Don't miss her 'Oo-h Child'. What more can I say? SHE IS GODDESS WITH HER ENCHANTED FLAME!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Price of Purchase.......2001-04-23

No Nina Simone CD is ever a disappointment. Even so, I took a chance with this one since the Volume 2 songs aren't as commercial as her earlier version on RCA. I was curious too because this CD has more covers of songs made famous by their originators, especially seeing what Simone does with "My Way", a song long identified with Frank Sinatra, who isn't exactly a stylistic match for Nina. Well, she doesn't disappoint. It's always interesting what Simone does with a cover song made famous by someone else. The arrangement and moods Nina brings to these songs are refreshing and as good, maybe even better, than the original versions.

Hands down, the standout track here is her cover of Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman"----Wow!! The intensity, tenderness and sorrow spilled forth by Nina on this track are breathtaking and a 5-hanky tearjerker. Characteristically, Simone achieves this without any sentimentality. These songs were recorded by Nina during a turbulent time in U.S. history, the time of Vietnam and protests of every kind. I feel the central theme in this collection is compassion and human understanding, and some of the songs selected for this collection reflects that. Whether it's "Oooh Child" "Peace of Mind" or "Human Touch", Simone's voice reflects hope, love and understanding of the human condition. Definitely worth the price of admission. This is a 5-star rating. "Just Like A Woman" alone is worth it!

5 out of 5 stars High Priestess for a reason..........2000-07-21

Yes. This is an excellent album. Everything Dr. Simone does is wonderful, but this is the most emotional album I've ever heard. "Here Comes the Sun" is, thanks to POINT OF NO RETURN, quite popular (and quite good, too). Nina singing Dylan is always remarkable, and "Just Like a Woman" is even better than "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" and "I Shall Be Released" from Volume One. In "The Human Touch" we get to hear a calm, melodic Simone... Her voice is perfectly-- PERFECTLY-- suited for singing Jacques Brel's songs. "Ne Me Quitte Pas" is powerful, but "The Desperate Ones" is even more emotionally (and artistically) extreme. AMAZING! Of course, "My Way" is terriffic. Imagine Nina Simone doing anything her way. Much better than the Sinatra version. MARVELOUS ALBUM. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars It's easy, see, I can sing a song all day........2007-01-15

This CD features recordings that Elvis made in January, 1957. Tapes featuring the unedited recording sessions from January 13 & 19 were found in the late 1980s. These tapes happened to be in binaural (two track) stereo, with Elvis in the left speaker and everyone else in the right speaker. It's a very primitive form of stereo, but it's still fun to hear Elvis isolated from the rest of the band. The bulk of this CD features alternate takes from these recording sessions. These are very interesting, as you can hear what went on at the recording session. Some comments made before and after the songs are included. You can also hear mistakes made by Elvis, as he sings the wrong lyric or busts out laughing (or laughs BECAUSE he sang the wrong lyric). Elvis even hits a bad note on "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" (it even happens to the best singers). I should point out that "Mean Woman Blues" take 14 is not an alternate take, but is in fact the master take that was used on the Loving You album way back in 1957 (but this is, of course, the first time is was released in stereo). There were five songs recorded during these sessions for which no binaural tapes could be located. So, these five songs close out the CD in their original mono master take versions. This is a great CD which should appeal to any Elvis fan.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Stereo At It's Earliest, A Definite Headphone Moment.......1998-08-24

This CD will appeal to those who have an interest in very early stereo recordings of rock and roll. The following quote from the CD pamphlet explains it better than I could:

"A couple of years before the advent of the stereo disc in mid-1958, major record companies had been experimenting with stereophonic recording of classical music (often referred to then as 'binaural'). In the popular-music sphere, however, state-of-the-art studios were using the new Ampex 2-track tape recorders for making binaural tapes for other purposes. The engineers would place, say, the vocalist or soloist on one track and the backing band on the other; this enabled further engineering and mixing to produce the final mono master after the performers had left. In the earliest days--as in the case of these Elvis sessions--the binaural machine was run only as a safety copy. Although these 2-track tapes were never intended for stereophonic release thirty-odd years ago, I have very carefully prepared them for stereo enjoyment utilizing techniques that I hope are compatible with the aims of the original recording team and artist. The quality and clarity of these originals certainly belie their age and permit and exciting stereo image by any standard--a tribute indeed to the Radio Recorders engineers. The discovery of these 2-track masters is nothing short of a miracle. The tape boxes have "erase" clearly written on the master log sheets. They are the only ones know to exist from the pre-stereo era".

Note: the last 5 tracks (16-20) are in mono and the CD states this.

We are very fortunate that Elvis signed up with RCA. Had he not, it could have been another five years before we heard him in stereo and who knows what would have happened to the master tapes from many lesser known record companies that went out of business in the sixties.

5 out of 5 stars THE FIRST TRUE ULTIMATE JIMI HENDRIX COMPILATION!.......2006-11-29

I will be doing a review on the now out of print legendary masterpiece 2-CD set album "THE ESSENTIAL JIMI HENDRIX VOLUMES ONE AND TWO" by the late great guitar legend, the one and only Jimi Hendrix. These two volume 2-CD set album was originally released on Jimi's old Reprise Records label in 1978. The matrix or ID number of this CD is 9 26035-2. If I find out new information regarding this 2-CD set, I will edit this review so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible.

In my opinion, this compilation is the first true collection of Jimi Hendrix. This compilation along with the Jimi Hendrix Experience Purple Boxset, you will not be doing very bad as far as collecting some of Jimi's most sacred recordings. When this compilation was originally released on cassette and vinyl, they were actually released on two cassettes and on a 2-record set for Volume one and on one record for Volume two. Putting both volumes on a 2-CD set is actually a blessing for all who wish to own this collection if you can find it.

The songs on here are all EXCELLENT! Disc one Volume one contains MANY of Jimi's legendary hit songs such as "Are You Experienced," "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe," "Fire," "Foxey Lady," "The Wind Cries Mary," "I Don't Live Today," "Little Wing," "If 6 Was 9," "Bold As Love," "Little Miss Lover," Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" and "Crosstown Traffic." Disc two Volume two contains the songs such as "All Along The Watchtower," "Izabella," "Freedom," "Dolly Dagger," "Stepping Stone," "Drifting," "Ezy Rider," Monterey's 1967 Live Recording of "Wild Thing," "Machine Gun," THE GREATEST GUITAR SOLO IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY, "The Star Spangled Banner" recorded live at Woodstock 1969 and the BLISTERING "Gloria."

As you can see, this is not a bad collection of Jimi at all! EVERY ONE of these songs are legendary and is a breakthrough in the recording technology process. One of the MANY fine examples of this process is the legendary song "Bold As Love." All I will say about this song is listen to the ending of it and you will know what I mean. In my opinion, this song contains one of the most beautiful endings in Rock n' Roll history. Another great example is the song "Are You Experienced?." This song is absolutely legendary, daring and breathtaking with Jimi asking you a BOLD question. The music to "Are You Experienced?" is nothing but incredible and far ahead of its time. When I listen to the song "Drifting," I REALLY TRULY believe that Jimi was drifting away from us which would lead to his unfortunate death on 18 September 1970. In the haunting song "Machine Gun," Jimi was the ONLY PERFORMER who DARED to take us on a journey to the Vietnam war. Through his guitar, Jimi actually created unimaginable sounds and effects such as bullets quickly going off through a machine gun and explosions going off on the battlefield killing many soldiers or hearing their cries. You can also hear the planes flying and crashing in the battlefield through his guitar. In my opinion, you can actually feel Jimi's emotions and tears flowing through his guitar as he is playing this song. "Machine Gun" has to be one of the most if not the most incredible song of the Vietnam war to ever be recorded onto tape. Jimi would also use this same kind of formula on our National Anthem when he performed the "Star Spangled Banner" live at Woodstock in 1969. All I will say about the Hendrix version of the Van Morrison composition song "Gloria" is that this song is a TRUE ROCKER! Other GREAT ROCKERS included in this collection are "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" and "Little Miss Lover." These two songs KICK A*S! I can keep talkng about all the songs contained in this collection, but I would eventually make this review long like many of my other Hendrix reviews in the past. This is a GREAT compilation and is worth buying if you can find it, but I think you know where to start.

In closing, Jimi Hendrix is THE GREATEST GUITARIST OF ALL TIME. In MANY magazine polls, Jimi has pretty much been voted THE GREATEST OF THEM ALL! In a recent poll by Mojo magazine, the "Are You Experienced?" album was voted the GREATEST INSTRUMENTAL album of ALL-TIME! There is NO DOUBT after all these years since Jimi's death in 1970, his influence in Rock n' Roll is fealt to this day. When you hear a great guitar legend play a note through their guitar, Jimi flows through their guitar as well. There will NEVER be another Jimi Hendrix, he is IRREPLACEABLE. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for all of you. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL! JIMI LIVES! Rock out always and take care. J.L.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Intro To Hendrix.......2004-06-27

Much has been written about Jimi Hendrix, so I'll keep this short.

This reasonably-priced 2 cd set is the perfect place to start a Hendrix collection. Material from several albums is contained here, with a bit of an emphasis on "Are You Experienced?" and "Electric Ladyland". This is also a great album to have if you only want one Hendrix cd.

Once you've digested this, move on to the individual albums.
