Thirds

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
The James Gang Rides Again set the stage for the group's third album to propel them to Top Ten, headliner status, but that didn't happen. The band was on its last legs, rent by dissension as Walsh became the focus of attention, and the appropriately titled Thirds reflected the conflict. Of the 9 original songs on the release, four were contributed by Walsh, two each by bass player Dale Peters and drummer Jim Fox, and one was a group composition.

5 out of 5 stars Joe had one foot out the door, but this is still a classic.......2007-02-16

This album was weaker than "rides again". Yet With songs like Walk away, midnight man and white man, black man, you have to give it 5 stars just for including those 3 classics. Overall it's a pretty good album, considering Joe had one foot out the door.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST JAMES GANG ALBUM EVER.......2004-12-12

This is definitely the best JAMES GANG album of all the 4 albums with JOE WALSH remastered on cd because JIM FOX and DALE PETERS who are also multi-instrumentalists like JOE also sing 1 or 2 songs on this album. Even though WALK AWAY and MIDNIGHT MAN are memorable radio classics, my favorite song is definitely JIM FOX'S "THINGS I COULD BE" with his soulful vocals and organ riffs, JOE's guitar riffs, and DALE'S bass guitar riffs that give this song that excellent psychodelic/blues/rock feeling. When I first heard this song, I remembered how my oldest brother used to have this record from the early 1970s. Plus, I also love DALE PETERS' "DREAMING IN THE COUNTRY," featuring his calm vocals, JOE acoustic, electric FENDER TELECASTER, and pedal steel guitar playing, and JIM'S track piano, and DALE'S "WHITE MAN/BLACK MAN featuring JOE'S piano and guitar riffs and the females gospel singers. DALE had the best singing voice in the band besides a whole lot better sounding bass guitar than TOM KRISS. I love JIM'S LIVE MY LIFE AGAIN with with his track piano playing and excellent vocals and guitar by JOE. Plus, JOE'S "IT'S ALL THE SAME" and "AGAIN" with the orchestra and horn section that accompanied JOE'S singing, piano, and 12 string acoustic guitar playing reminds me of AMERICA'S commercial sounding songs from the mid 1970s, and YADIG is an excellent instrumental by the band with JIM'S drumming and vibe playing, DALE'S string bass playing, and JOE'S FENDER RHODES piano and guitar playing. I wish there would have been more JAMES GANG albums that followed the style of this one with JIM and DALE singing 1 or 2 songs from the album I was so greatful that I ordered these from CDNOW when I saw that MCA RECORDS remastered these albums, that were originally release on ABC RECORDS. Additionally the full liner notes, photos, and interviews with the band members are a bonus too.

4 out of 5 stars A rock classic.......2004-09-12

Thirds (1971.) James Gang's third album.

Although classic rockers the James Gang didn't really achieve any true popularity with their debut, 1969's Yer Album, the follow-up effort, 1970's Rides Again, guaranteed the band a place in rock and roll history, due to the success of the hit Funk #49. Needless to say, the band wanted to shell out another studio effort - and in 1971 they did just that. Thirds, the band's last studio effort to feature the legendary Joe Walsh, would be released that year. Read on for my review of this album.

Obviously, a lot of people were disappointed to see Joe Walsh leave the band. But before leaving, he and the boys recorded some of the best material they had ever recorded. The most obvious of the classic songs on here is the opener, Walk Away. This song gets plenty of radio play, even to this day. Much like their previous album, this album starts off with the big hit, and then goes into a short instrumental sequence. In the case of this album, that instrumental is called Yadig?. And from there on out it's an album consisting mostly of underrated masterpieces. Many of the stylings on this album are pretty much the same kind you'd expect from the Rides Again album, but they manage to have just enough diversity to keep things fresh. There are classic rockers and ballads alike, making for a very entertaining listening experience. It's tough to say whether or not this album is better than any other Walsh-era James Gang recording, because they're all so good. Like the others, this one is recommended.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the availability of these remasters, there's a huge problem. (As of September 12, 2004), The band's catalogue has become EXTREMELY difficult to find! The only easy albums to find are Rides Again and the Greatest Hits album. If you want any other ones of their albums, expect to have to do some major hunting. These albums are WORTH tracking down, but be ready to do plenty of searching.

Thirds proved to be an excellent final James Gang studio effort for Joe Walsh. He'd play on the band's live release, and then leave the band to become a solo artist. In 1973, he'd release his solo debut, The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get, which would feature the hit Rocky Mountain Way. One year after that he'd join up with the Eagles, but still continue his solo career. And Thirds sums up his final studio sessions with the James Gang. Like with any other Walsh-era James Gang album, this one is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Yadig?.......2001-12-05

The James Gang's third and most sumptuous album. Yes, its true - if you want guitar histrionics you're better off with "Yer Album". If you want psychedelia, check out sophomore effort "James Gang Rides Again". But if you want simple, classic '70s West Coast rock - this is the place to come. As well as rock staple "Walk Away" you also get funky instrumental "Yadig?", Joe Walsh's beautiful "It's All The Same", and the Eagles-esque "Midnight Man". But the band save the best for last. The final two songs on this album, "White Man / Black Man" and "Live My Life Again" are epic flights of fancy: very much of their time, yet somehow timeless. This is an album every fan of Seventies rock really should own.

2 out of 5 stars Out of Gas, Out of Grooves.......2001-05-25

Granted that topping a pair of rock gems such as "Yer Album" and "Rides Again" was a daunting mission, "Thirds" still can't overcome its limitations even with remastering. They're reaching for something that won't let them grab hold. (Dale Peters and Jim Fox also weren't quite up to Joe Walsh's standard as individual songwriters, for that matter.) Though there are a couple of pleasant diversions ("Yadig," especially - these three must have had a plain ball cutting what amounts to dreaming up their own answer to the Beatles' equally charming goof instrumental, "Flying") and a pair of crunchy A-sides ("Walk Away" and the charming "Midnight Man"), the Gang's first (and best) incarnation is out of gas and ideas, not to mention out of grooves. (By now, Fox and Peters as a rhythm section sound like Grand Funk Lite - small wonder Walsh was itching to break away, especially with an album like "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get" in his near future.) No disgrace - you can do a lot worse than to hang your reputation on the first two James Gang albums. And, as a matter of fact, a lot of bands, including the next incarnations of the James Gang themselves, have.

5 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure and Sheer Delight.......2000-10-19

the absolute sound, a premier stereo magazine, has loosened up its musical tastes in issues 125-6, and allowed its eminent reviewers to pass along music that meets the pleasure test. This particular recording does just that for me, it pleasures me, and makes me feel guilt for enjoying My Fair Lady as it was meant to be heard, via the Hohner Accordian Symphony Orchestra. The polkas and waltzes bring back memories of driving to Clear Lake, Iowa, to dance to the Six Fat Dutchmen, and the River Kwai "Colonel Bogey" March alone would make this CD resonate in my heart. It matches, in its joy, "Karussells of Europe", another recent purchase. Both recordings are 24 bit, and make my car and home speakers peal with joy. Both recordings are non medical antidepressants for the young at heart. And if you truly feel guilty about enjoying them as much as I did, say one Our Father and two Hail Marys, and all will be forgiven.

5 out of 5 stars Bartok bonanza.......2000-09-17

If you're looking for a single CD that will introduce you to the treasure-house of Bartok's piano works, you can't do better than this. Szokolay brings each of the 55 short selections here to vivid life, from the simple and understated ones to the harmonically challenging, from the folk rhythms to the austere and meditative mini-masterpieces. The piano sound is just a little thick compared to the best piano recordings, but its very lack of sharpness helps to keep some of the more percussive pieces from sounding too brittle. I enjoy this more with every hearing. Hats off to Naxos for a great buy.

      Product Description

From an idea born in 2005, comes The Plastic Thirds ambitious concept album Anoxia. Forged out of rhythmically charged Ani DiFranco style guitars, electronica style beats, prog rock structures & genuine gritty lyrics, Anoxia cuts clean through our notions of security. What do we strive for? In money, relationships, careers the real desire is maintaining the safety of the status quo. And yet thats what keeps us here. Exactly where we are, afraid of any real change. Silently, invisibly suffocating who we truly are - Anoxia. Stylistically Anoxia is fashioned out of a blend of The Police, The Postal Service, Ani DiFranco, Soul Coughing, Nine Inch Nails, Tool & U2. But realistically, comparison is pointless. Anoxia breaks new ground in the form of a new genre Acoustic Prog-tronica. Carefully crafted songs explore depths of meaning with intricate musical structures while respecting the balance that keeps Anoxia an easy listen. So if youre looking for a fluffy pop album or glossy corporate-produced rock, dont buy it, you wont like it. But if youre looking for a little more, something to sink your whole self into as you discover something intimate and new with every listen The Plastic Thirds Anoxia is a must have. Mastered by accredited engineer Stephen Marsh in 2007.

5 out of 5 stars Cowell: Music for Strings.......2000-10-23

Those whose interest in American music extends beyond Copland, Bernstein and Gershwin will welcome this attractive disk of music by Henry Cowell. The two longest works on this disk, 'Ensemble' and 'Variations on Thirds' are serious, well crafted works, but the general listener will probably respond most readily to the other pieces featured here. Cowell's 'Hymn & Fuguing Tune' series, written between 1942 and 1965, are inspired by old, rural hymn-tunes by 18th century composers like William Billings and Justin Morgan. Three of these pieces are showcased here, numbers 2, 5 and 8. They are stately, plangent works, intensely felt and nobly melodic. Those who respond to Vaughan Williams's 'Tallis Fantasia' will enjoy these works, which share - in miniature, perhaps - some of that great work's noble utterance. Everything on this disk is given committed, eloquent performances, beautifully recorded.

        5 out of 5 stars Immaculate timing.......2004-05-11

I am new to Classical Music. I have only 250 CD's of it. But I would rate this as my favourite as I swear Murray Perahia Sounds like three pianist's playing this. The timing is stratified and kept totally separate so that the impression is breathtaking. I thought this was only my impression, but then I heard a piece on CBC one morning, and the commentator had a giddy giggle at the end of the piece. That had been my reaction to the whole CD. It led me to buy three more of his CD's. Nothing has effected me this much since first CD of Andrea Bocchelli.

        4 out of 5 stars (No title)........2000-12-15

Godowsky's 53 studies on Chopin's etudes are considered to be amongst the most taxing piano pieces ever written. On this disc, Ian Hobson does remarkably well in sorting out the myriad of polyphonic lines, juxta-position of complex rhythmic patterns--showing the listener that every note has its place and reason, and nothing is excessive, which it can easily seem in the hands of a lesser pianist. He does an admirable job of keeping a firm hold on the melodic line, but he is not perfect. Athough keeping his cool in his valiant, intriguing, and poetic efforts among these Herculian monstrosities, he can sometimes lack fluency. When this disc was first out, it served as a first release for many of the featured selections, and their performances have since faired quite well among increasing standards. Sound is good, if a bit boxy.

I am very proud to say Claudia Anderson was one of my first flute teachers. In 1970 as a very young woman, she was an outstanding performer and now she's even better. Her performance of the Liebermann Sonata is the most outstanding of any flutist I heard performe this piece. She'll make you fall in love with the piece and the flute. Buy the CD. You wont be sorry.
