Posited between punk (Pete Townshend's instinctive ethos) and progressive (much of the music), Who Are You is ultimately a failed attempt to conciliate two camps that thrived on their opposition to one another. Neither the insurgent punks of Johnny Rotton's generation nor Townshend's comfortably numb peer group had the least need for one another. Townshend, on the other hand, seemed to want one thing from both forces: their contempt. It was something he could share with them. All of which led to one exceptional song (the title cut) and a handful of lesser statements (the modified minuet "Guitar and Pen," "Music Must Change," "New Song"). John Entwistle fills three song slots with the tactless "Had Enough," the slight but likable "905," and "Trick of the Light," an above-par classic-rock showcase for Roger Daltry. A generous five bonus tracks round out the reissue. --Steven Stolder --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars "Had Enough" of an old version? Get the CD w/bonus tracks!.......2007-07-18

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

When "Who Are You" hit the record store shelves in 1978 there were those that felt the album sounded too commercial and overly produced. Those that approached the material with an open mind were impressed with the energy and honesty of the compositions.

It has been debated by the Who faithful if the title track should have opened the record. As a collector of any note the original line-up would turn in to vinyl I have thought "Who Are You" or "The Music Must Change" are better suited for the first track. "New Song" is a solid cut. "I write the same old songs with a few new lines." Pete is being a bit modest but he is always thought provoking. "Had Enough" is pure pain of a human heart torn to shreds. "If you need a lover you better find another." There is some intense imagery during "Music Must Change." Roger's vocal is so believable you feel you are in the studio. The title track musically may sound new but the lyrics are a throw back to the rough and raw early days. After you digest the material, the components we love about the Who are very obviously in place, Pete's cynical view, his angry guitar, John's bass played with power and passion, Keith's drums kick us in the teeth, and Roger delivers the goods.

Don't listen to those that find the glass half empty. The five bonus tracks are solid, highlighted by an extra verse during "Who Are You."

Now almost thirty years removed if you never gave the album a fair chance in respect to Keith and John why not see how mighty the guitar and pen can be.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing...........2007-06-23

I have really mixed feelings about this album. Some of the songs are really good, especially musicially. However, lyrically this album leaves a lot to be desired. In later Who albums (especially here), Townshend starting writing songs on being a rock star and writer's block, two problems that most people don't have to deal with. The lyrics are especially trite in New Song and Guitar and Pen. Musically, New Song is fine, but the lyrics really detract from it. Guitar and Pen is the same way, and the lyrics are even more trite. Music Must Change, well, has a rather obvious title. Sister Disco is a pretty good rocker, and I like the acoustic guitar solo at the end. However, John Entwistle writes about much more interesting things, such as human population and "being tired of loving my brothers". Entwistle's contributions here are rather good, especially the song 905, which is one of my favorite Entwistle songs. Had Enough is funny, despite an annoying synthesizer line, and Trick of the Light is the most explosive song on the album.

As we know, this was Moon's last album, and his skills were in deterioration due to the ridiculously excessive drug intake over the years. It's really a shame, too. Once in a while, the old Moon appears (especially on the title track, Guitar and Pen, and the intro to Trick of the Light), but overall, his playing is very subdued and at times sloppy. Reportedly, Music Must Change had a 6/8 time signature drum part, but Moon couldn't play it, so Townshend dropped it, and the only percussion on it is some cymbal crashing. Moon's slower drumming actually works well on Entwistle's song 905. It allows the vocals and instrumentation to really come through. This may have been unintentional because of Moon's deteriorating skills, and that he couldn't handle a more complicated drum part (like on Music Must Change), but no matter, it still works.

Overall, Who Are You is worth a listen or two, but ultimately is disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Who Are you my review.......2007-06-01

Who Are You? is a good Who. Same old song Had Enogh are good. 905 is the best to me, with the beeps, guitar, drums, lyrics and vocal being some of The Whos best. Sister Disco is still good to listen to. Music must Change is great, good guitar solo. Trick of The Light is real good. Guitar and the pen is underrated. Love is coming Down is one of the worst Who songs'Who are You is one of the most popular Who songs. Who Are you? Is a good farwell to Keith Moon.

5 out of 5 stars Great Who CD.......2007-05-07

Who are You is the best Who studio CD ever, hands down. Even better than Who's Next.

4 out of 5 stars Does anybody really read through l-o-o-o-n-g reviews? .......2007-03-16

I like this album. I've owned it since 1979 and still put it on from time to time. Some of the songs may "miss the mark", but it all depends on what sort of mood I am in. This album at least has some variety to it. A fun album with some good music. What else do you want?

4 out of 5 stars Very good show which I hadn't heard of..........2007-05-13

I was very into theatre in high school and college and thought I was up on most musicals, but had never heard of this show until recently. It's comprised of three short stories which were adapted into the musical format. The first two stories are tied together very well, although the last seems tacked on. But the songs are catchy and it's fairly easy to figure out what's happening simply by listening to the songs. There are two songs which are tied for my favoritism: "It's a Fish" from Adam and Eve and "You Are Not Real" from Passionella. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars THE APPLE TREE (1966 ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST).......2007-04-10

IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I WENT TO THE REVIVAL OF THE APPLE TREE ON BROADWAY IN NEW YORK CITY AND LOVED THE SCORE BUT THERE WASN'T A SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE SO I PURCHASED THE ORIGINAL VERSION AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars I still remember these songs after 40 years.......2006-11-05

I saw this show on the stage when it first ran, and have never forgotten it. The key to a good Broadway show is this question: Are you humming the songs when you leave the theatre? In the case of The Apple Tree, the answer is a resounding "Yes." I have been waiting 40 years for this show to be revived, and I have tickets for the revival opening in December at the Roundabout. I hope not to be disappointed, for the trio of Barbara Harris, a very young Alan Alda, and the late Larry Blyden were terrific. The three-part concept can be jarring because just when you're getting into the story, it ends -- but just enjoy the kind of songs they just don't write anymore.

3 out of 5 stars Really 2.5.......2006-07-25

SO this is another show thats actually three one acts. The first "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is the best by far. It has really cute songs and nice plot. Thats the only reason I rounded this up from 2.5 to 3 stars. The rest of the show is nothing great. "Lady and Tiger" is short and boring. And "Passionella" is exactly what it sounds like, a knock off of Cinderella. But hey, its a good show for collectors and "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is nice. Favorite Song: "Its A Fish"

1 out of 5 stars Boring material that you forget very easily.......2006-06-29

According to some reviews, this musical was supposed to be very good and I bought it. Unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed. It's composed of three different tales, the first one referring to the Adam & Eve biblical story. The lyrics here are very silly and tedious. The second tale, "The Lady or the Tiger?" contains songs that are simply awful, probably the worst ever written for a Broadway show. The third story, "Passionella", contains music that does nothing to make things better. The album contains a good informative booklet in English, German, French & Italian (as Sony uses to do)which says that Time magazine defined this show as "three moldy figs". I entirely agree. I would recommend this musical to those suffering from insomnia: it will put them to sleep right away.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

4 out of 5 stars It's never quite let me go........2007-03-13

At a rather hip friend's insistence, I first heard this album in mid to late high school (circa 1995). Seeing as that those years were ground zero for teenage angst and all that comes with being hormonal, confused, and lovelorn, I seized onto this band with a fervor (right along with Mineral, Seam, and a few others). To this day, when I hear the opening bass chords and the swelling drums of the first song, I instinctively grit my teeth, get my rock face on, and prepare to air drum on my steering wheel. This is a powerful record, one that bends and weaves with a beautiful intensity throughout. The desperation of hardcore is still very much a presence in TITR's music, but it's bound tight with melody, memorable time signatures, and pop-savvy structures. Granted, Garrett's voice can drive people away from the band if they aren't willing to give it time (he's more than a tad nasal), but the songs stick with you.
Definitely an album to purchase if you're even momentarily interested in the mid-'90's tail end of the "emo/post hardcore" movement.
As for the guy who suggested that the EP was better than this full-length, don't believe it. Get this, and dig in.

4 out of 5 stars Solid..............2005-06-24

First off this sounds nothing like current pop punk (ala--Green Day)like another reviewer has suggested. Muscially they sound like late 80,s early 90's Samiam and Jawbreaker, maybe even a little Crimpshrine thrown in as well. It's emo if you must place a silly tag on it but it is good none the less--tight,melodic and catchy.

5 out of 5 stars One album I can't stop listening to........2005-06-08

This is my #1 album of all time. Hands down. I cannot be without this album for more than 1 week, and it's been out for 8 years. I love it so much that I've given away 5 copies of it to friends and relatives, and rebought it within a day or two every time. Don't miss out. Buy it now. NOW! Thank you for reading my review.

back in the day i remember my friends babbling about this band called texas is the reason, but i never gave them a chance for some reason. so i did today, and i am extremely disappointed. someone said this band sounds like further seems forever and all those other new pop punk bands, but i would say it sounds like a high school band trying to sound like the current pop punk trend.the recording and production quality is considerably poor as well, dont waste your money kids...just turn mtv back on and let them make your music choices for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2004-06-20

This is perhaps one of the first emo bands that really started making an impact on the world (the first of course, nearly undoubtedly being, Sunny Day Real Estate). They have a very unique sound that has never been matched since they broke up. It is perhaps a good thing that they broke up, before they got extremely mainstream. Then they probably would've went downhill.
Their drummer has become a member of Jets to Brazil, one of the most praised bands in the music world, by not only emo fans but various others. Texas is the Reason is a very good, influential, unique band. This album is definitely top notch and worth a listen for anyone who can appreciate music.

5 out of 5 stars An overlooked album of great fun worship.......2007-05-16

I bought this along with Matt Redman's Beautiful News and Brenton Brown's Everlasting God, and this album got the most frequent play time. Something about it -- the energy, the atmosphere, the simple yet powerful words -- caught me instantly. Much of the recent worship has either been too complicated or too generic to pull at the heart, but this album managed to touch on both spiritual and musical avenues.

Worship can only go in so many directions, and since it's made for simplicity, there can be only so many variations of the G and E chord progressions. Desperation Band makes the best of it with interesting guitar riffs, a DJ, an emotional piano, and a well-produced keyboard. You can also feel the spiritual energy on this album, as though you are there in the moment amidst the crowd in their spiritual high. While the youth will enjoy this album the most, adults might enjoy or at least appreciate what's offered here.

The album starts right out the gate with three fast songs: "Freedom Song," which has a strong chorus but a weak bridge, "The Difference," a fun and offbeat clapper, and "Promises," an almost-pop-song that is the best of the three. Then "Ready Now" slows things down with a moving verse and chorus and an incredible bridge. The title song, "Who You Are," is the second best song of the album. It begins slow and uncertain but slowly builds to a rousing bridge, that while totally unoriginal is still worthy of raising hands. "Endlessly" is undoubtedly the strongest song on the album -- its simplicity in both melody and lyrics makes it perfect for worship, and its energy and steady direction are both lifting and contemplative. "Chasing" and "Refuse to Be Denied" close the album on a somber note that addresses the strength of our divine relationship.

Bottom line -- If you're looking for the one album for your youth ministry that will re-ignite the praise section, this is it. While not as scripture-based as Matt Redman, as catchy as Chris Tomlin, or as original as David Crowder, this is an energetic album with all the right elements combining into an effective and solid worship project.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy Purchase.......2007-01-24

Great job guys. Another amazing CD with power. Absolutely love "Who You Are" and "Endlessly". Too bad you cannot sample the songs on Amazon. It is refreashing to hear top notch music with the times and a message to convey to this generation.

This CD is absolutely incredible! I'm so impressed with John, Jared and Glenn. God is using them big time!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-08-12

I heard this album before I ever attended a Desperation conference and at the time I wasn't very impressed. And then I attended the conference...WOW!!! I don't know what it is about the conference but it causes the songs to really make since. Every song is a simply incredible worship experience. My personal favorites are "Ready Now" and "Who You Are" (and luckily these two songs are right next to each other).

4 out of 5 stars Incredible Worship.......2006-07-05

This CD is amazing and really should put Desperation on the map. Songs like "Who You Are" and "Ready Now" need to be on repeat everywhere you go. The DVD that comes with it is great and insightful into their songs and what they are about. Pick it up and listen through it a couple of times. I think you will really enjoy it-

Amazon.com essential recording

This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. Indeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time. A joyous performance, just right for the holiday season. --David Hurwitz

Amazon.com

Trevor Pinnock meets with mixed success in this account of the Messiah with the English Concert & Choir and soloists Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Michael Chance, Howard Crook, and John Tomlinson, recorded and released in 1988. Its strengths are the strengths of the early-music movement in general. The size and distribution of the instrumental and vocal forces are optimal, which means that textures are clear and balances apt. Rhythms are nicely pointed, though often, in Pinnock's case, not quite well enough sprung. Tempos are well chosen; for example, "All we like sheep"--which turns out to be one of the set's best numbers--is a real bourré, and Pinnock animates it in just the right way. But the performance often seems workmanlike and unemotional, weighed down in too many instances by the humdrum work of the chorus. The alto section in particular, which is half male and half female, sings timidly and is constantly swallowing its entrances. Bass soloist John Tomlinson is a further drag on the effort. He has the right idea--that there's an Italian opera hiding behind all this biblical imagery--but his cottony sound is out of place, a misguided attempt to mimic Nicolai Ghiaurov. His usable range is less than a tenth (he croaks the low G's and F-sharps), and his diction is horrible. "Thus spake the Lord" is strangled, and when, in "The trumpet shall sound" Tomlinson gets to the words "we shall be changed," one can't help wishing that he had been changed too, right before the sessions started. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Ladies & gentleman: The Lord'n Savior, God Almighty.......2007-06-13

Handel's Messiah is my favorite piece of classical music. Of the two versions that I had I only have left this one, and it is not the best (the other had been a cheap recording whose author's name I forgot too). This version seems to lack a little enthusiasm from the voices; too melancholic. Anyway, this is the first review of any music that I write, and probably will be the last too, so I just want to leave my impression of how I feel when I hear these solemn and heavenly sounds. One feels so raised to the heavenlies... I can almost sense the presence of the Lord Almighty up yonder among the clouds, and me being carried in solemnity to meet Him. Far away are the buzzing sounds of earthly chores. The air is fresh and clean as we are raised above the valleys, and we come to meet God's elected amid the singing, stronger and stronger. Jubilant, bathed in the glorious rays of the Savior's Light, we come together and sing: Glory to God, glory to God, praise and glory for He is coming...

2 out of 5 stars So Fashionable, and So Disappointing.......2007-02-01

This would be a great 21st Century Reader's Digest version of Messiah, if such a thing existed any more. Handel did as much as he could, but really, the performers still have to do something besides posture, which, by the way, seems to me to characterize many performances these days. Fashionable, but musically deficient.

Specifically: John Tomlinson sings like he thinks he IS God, instead of singing about Him. Heavy, cumbersome, and overblown. May I add boorish?

Arleen Auger has a very sweet voice. And??

Despite the program notes insisting that certain segments of this Messiah are given to "the contralto", Anne Sofie von Otter is NOT a contralto. Not even close.

The male alto can barely sustain a legato line - why he insists upon throwing in those complicated, badly-performed embellishments I can't figure. Well, I can, but I'd really rather not say.

Wake up, choristers!! It's 'For Unto Us A Child Is Born," not "Oy, I have to go to the grocery store today."

Boy do I regret having spent almost $40 on this one. Thank goodness I have the Colin Davis to console me.

4 out of 5 stars A nice combination of period nad tradiitonal.......2006-12-17

This 1988 recording sits between the euqally English, euqally period-ifnluenced Hogwood and Garidner. Of the three, Hogwood sounds more 'authentic' because it uses boys in the chorus and singers schooled period practice. By comparison, Pinnock's soprano, Arleen Auger, and mozeeo, Von Otter, are essentially modern singers--gorgeous ones, of course, Gardiner is far more anemic in his conducting and uses a scrwny-sounding orchestra, so if that's more authentic, so be it. Of the three, Pinnock gives us more traditional music values in his emotional expression and instrumental timbres.

The competiiton is mushc stiffer now than in 1988, but Pinnock's reading has survived the test of time. He is not a genuinely inspired conductor--sadly, Messiah has become a cottage industry that excludes most big-name talents--but neither are Gardiner and Hogwood. (For sheer musicality, I tend to put my money on Andrew Parrott, Robert King, Marc Minkowski, Niklaus Harnoncourt, and Rene Jacobs.) But he's certainly good eough. The reason I haven't given five stars is that the male soloists aren't first-rate, and in particular the Wotan voice of John Tomlinson sounds cavernous in the bass arias. Add to that Pinnock's tendency toward tepidness, and what you end up with is a very good but not great performance.

5 out of 5 stars Wait! Before you buy..........2006-05-28

... This Messiah has recently been re-released at a much cheaper price. Go back and look for the DG "The Originals" release, which is being sold new for under $12.

5 out of 5 stars La mas bella y fidedigna interpretacion que se pueda obtener.......2004-12-29

As Hammerstein writes in the opening song, "Many dames with lofty aims strive for lofty goals"--and Te Kanawa strives for successful crossover. Her beautiful singing exhibits impeccable diction and excellent phrasing; but "A Fine Romance" lacks anger and humor, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" lacks a storyteller, and "All the Things You Are" lacks romanticism. However, happy songs like "All Through the Day," "Look for the Silver Lining," and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," are successfully interpreted. Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations enhance Kern's beauty through his captivating use of obbligato instruments. A pleasant, if not wholly satisfactory, listening experience. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Though certainly not opera, Kern's songs benefit from an an operatic approach--not all of them, but certainly ones such Smoke gets in your Eyes, The song is you, All the things you are. I love Kern;s songs sung in many styles but Kiri's way is one of the best.

On the other hand, I did not like Kiri singing Berlin.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks Splendor.......2002-09-01

Though I do enjoy Kiri's interpretation of most music, and this CD was decent, I did not find any piece particularly memorable.

The voice is undeniably beautiful, and Kiri has managed to keep her maturing voice sounding somewhat young, yet I find that I much prefer her rendition of "The Laughing Song" to that of "Smoke Gets in YOur Eyes."

If you love Kern, and couldn't care less who performs it, than purchase this CD. If you are a fan of Kiris', then perhaps it would be best to avoid this purchase...for it is not a shining star in her vast collection of CDs. All in all, it was a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars White Glove Kern.......2001-05-20

I am the first to admit that most "crossover" albums, be they of classical performers singing pop or vice versa never quite cross over. This album does splendidly. Kern's music is the most related to classical operetta , and therefore the least jazziest. Operatic soprano Kiri Te Kanawa gives luscious, heartfelt readings of these wonderful songs, backed by glamorous orchestrations. Hearing a voice of such opulence and beauty in this music is a rare treat. Just listen to "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" ,"Long Ago and Far Away" or "The Song is You" and prepare to be swept away to another, more elegant time.

3 out of 5 stars mildly disappointing.......2000-09-30

Sometimes cross-over works, sometimes not. While Kiri te Kanawa has a beautiful voice, she never gets into the idiom of these Jerome Kern masterpieces sufficiently to convey their stories or their subtleties. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes especially stands out, she sings it with none of the pathos the song demands and her version pales compared to the Platters. The orchestral arrangements are decent and in many of the songs the purity of her voice is enough to carry them, but overall I would say this is a disappointing example of a crossover record. Ms. te Kanawa should stick to what she does best.
