The Thomas Crown Affair is a caper story with a new (well, retread) twist: Pierce Brosnan plays a guy who can afford virtually anything, so he attempts to get something he can't, a Monet. It's a movie fitting of a polished, well-produced soundtrack, which is exactly what this disc delivers. Sting's previously unreleased version of the famous theme song "Windmills of Your Mind" lacks the suave psychedelic flair of Noel Harrison's original version (he won an Oscar for the song on the original Thomas Crown soundtrack), but should please his fans. Nina Simone's classic "Sinnerman" is a welcome contribution, and Wasis Diop's "Caban La Ka Kratchie" is a steamy world fusion tune. Bill Conti's score--varying from pulsating piano compositions to smooth jazz--rounds out the rest of this short soundtrack. For most, the real attraction here is the Sting cut. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars The Sinnerman or the whole affair?.......2007-05-20

I wanted to get The Thomas Crown Affair Soundtrack for one reason only: The Sinnerman by Nina Simone, because I was not able to find this particular version anywhere else. And yet this song...it is simply great. When I first heard it, I could feel shivers down my spine, and have felt the same ever since. But to be completely honest, I do like the rest of the CD. Unfortunately, there is not much left. The soundtrack is rather short (31' approximately), and...well...jazzy, which is not exactly my cup of tea, but still, it was worth getting it. It is a nice, relaxing listening. Apart from The Sinnerman, of course. That one makes me feel exhilirated and strong and...well, happy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD representing most of the movie's music.......2007-03-11

This is a great CD containing most of the melodies and songs from the movie except for the Latin dance during the black and white party. I especially enjoyed Sting's Windmills Of Your Mind which is not released on any other CD (I believe) and Nina Simone's "clapping" song. One of the rare soundtracks that has all great songs and melodies in one!

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Crown Affair Soundtract.......2007-01-20

The CD was brand new, and I love the songs, it came in the mail extremley fast, even though it was a week before Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Just as Smooth as the Movie.......2006-09-25

This is a fantastic score and I highly recommend it. While Sting does not do the best ever recording of "Windmills of Your Mind," it's still very good, relaxing, and sets up the rest of the CD well.
Simone's "Sinnerman" is either something you do or do not like. Personally the vocals get to be repetitive and irritating after a while, but the piano and hand-clapping are definitely something to be heard, especially since they bring back the enjoyed memory of Brosnan and the other men clad in their "business suits and bowler cap" shuffle game for the film's final climax. I tend to skip the vocals, but still listen to the track.
"Everything is Never Quite Enough" is one of my favorite songs on this CD, even though there are so many different languages in the lyrics. The sounds and beat are incredible, stirring all the right emotions, while the lyrics are sultry and perfectly placed together. As said before, there are different languages sung in the song (the woman sings English, but the male sings French, his native African dialect, and some various others), but they all compliment each other and it is not at all annoying. It is excellent.
"Kaban a la Kratchie" is another track that you like or you don't...it depends on one's mood. Overall it is enjoyable and nostalgic of the Caribbean and the stunning photography of the scenes filmed in the tropics, but you need to be in a light-hearted mood and "enjoying the day" attitude to fully appreciate the song.
The rest of the songs are all Bill Conti's music and his score - no lyrics. The basic theme is reheard in the music, but the pace and background instruments are certainly different so you can listen to the entire CD without getting bored and can feel your pulse quicken with the music. The score certainly brings back the movie and the entire attitude of sophistication, intelligence, and smoothness. A great CD to listen to while driving, working, reading, basic background music, or for just plain listening to.
I highly recommend it and you will most certainly not have any buyer's remorse.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Crown Affair music from the movie.......2006-09-05

I found the music very uplifting and fun to listen to and it reminds me of the movie. I can listen during exercise and get my heart going for the day. The artists on the CD are great and I have searched for more CD's related.Sinnerman is one of my favorite songs/soundtrack.

Hip-hop confabulations don't come much more forward-thinking than this. Working from solid atomic principles, Deltron 3030 takes one producer, one MC, and one DJ and throws them beyond Futurama. Dan the Automator (one of the founders of the Handsome Boy Modeling School and administrator of Dr. Octagon's porno hospital) reinvents himself as the Cantankerous Captain Aptos and teams up with Deltron Zero (a.k.a. Hieroglyphics crew member Del tha Funky Homosapien) and Skiznod the Boy Wonder (bucky turntablist Kid Koala). Between the radio ads for future-funked, rap jams, and camouflaged cameos (by the likes of Prince Paul, a castrato Damon Albarn, MC Paul Barman and his Upper West Side doppelgänger Sean Lennon), the Deltron crew advise you to upgrade your brain to avoid getting sucked into the time virus. ("Ugrade your gray matter," they chant, "'cause one day it may matter.") The thematic opener, "3030," sounds like a beat-driven David Lean movie that slipped into the DJ's fingers with 31st-century rhythm stutters and scratches. Automator ping-pongs loops as rousing choral parts swell with space pride. "Things You Can Do" riffs off mod rock while a harpsichord hack and Sean Lennon drops feature on the sickly sweet mental apocalypse of "Memory Loss." Over its 21 tracks, Deltron 3030 erases the errors of this rap era in favor of hip-hop's future fathers. --Chris Campion

5 out of 5 stars One of the best underground albums of all time.......2007-04-04

This album is absolutely amazing. From Del's ability to use words that most rappers have never even heard, to Dan's ability to put together some nice basslines and sampling. Set in the year 3030, the album chronicles the duos adventures in space while still being able to relate the material to the present times. I would strongly suggest that anyone who likes hip-hop or rap to pick this album up. It is well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars There's about 3030 things you'll dig after just the 1st listen!!!.......2007-03-29

Let me start off by saying Im a huge DEL fan and have all of his material merely got this just to finish off his collection more than anything else. I have to admit however that its probably his 2nd best only to his "No Need For Alarm" album out of his 5 albums so far. Its by far his most complex+original album with his normal smokey battle orientated lyrics taking on a whole new techno-jargined quirkiness. They are quite literally off the wall but as another reviewer stated it all makes sense. But to review this as another DEL solo album would be a travesty as Dan The Automator is in full control of this project and his musical soundscapes allow DEL and indeed Kid Koala to run amok in equal measure. His beats are nothing short of breathtaking, Koala's turntablism is amazing and Del's lyrics+delivery are awesome. As its been stated several hundred times on the review pages for this album its just a brilliant, must-have album from start to finish. All 12 tracks (the rest are interludes) are barnstorming pieces of work. This is the yardstick to which Ive measured so many hiphop albums since I got it over a year ago. The standouts were "Things You Can Do", "Positive Contact", "Mastermind", "Time Keeps On Slipping" and "Memory Loss" but you could actually pick any of the 12 joints. Cop it and enjoy it 3030 times.

5 out of 5 stars most best homosapien insanity in all humanity........2007-02-02

Why is this out of print, it's blasphemy as far as I can see. This album is the most original, different and purely amazing work of music I have ever heard and I have heard much hip hop, rock and all that jazz. I was caught off guard when these sounds came around, and I found that even now this album has the profound effect of taking me off ground. Del's flows continue to have new meanings and Dan's beats always bring new leanings. If you find this pay mind to this and pay any amount of dimes for this.

5 out of 5 stars great album - intelligent rap.......2007-01-22

good to hear a rap album not focused on how much of a gangsta the artist, but mor focused on providing a creative bunch of songs with some thought put into the lyrics and music. phrasing is awesome from del the funky homosapien and excellent beats from dan the automator, which match perfectly with the underlying theme/story throughout the album

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

THIS HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE ALL TIME SONG. ALMOST HAVE IT WORN OUT. GREAT CD

5 out of 5 stars Lady in Red: The Very Best of Chris de Burgh.......2006-10-30

1. "This is your Paradise" - This is a number 1 pick as the "Our Song" for a couple. The lyrics are clear and concise and have all the emotion one wants to convey to your mate. The music is well suited to the lyrics and leaves a "cannot forget the melody" as the take away from listening.
2. "Lady in Red" - My reason for purchasing the cd. Again, the lyrics and melody make this an all time favorite dance and sing along tune. So much emotion is conveyed and is truly a classic.
3. "Borderline" - With the war in Iraq, this is a "now" tune even though written years ago. The sentiment is so emotionally filling .. one cannot get away from the haunting melody. Comment: Seems there are several tunes on this cd that mirror the melody of "Borderline". A bit repetitious but nonetheless haunting.

4 out of 5 stars What's Diana got to do with it?.......2006-02-06

I don't listen to Chris' music as much as I used to before but I know all the songs from this album. And I even own a cd with Lady In Red from 1995 and it is a newer recording of the song. Lady Di died in 1997 so Chris De Burgh couldn't have written the song after her death. Instead, it was Elton John who changed the lyrics of "Candle in the wind" (previously written for Marylin Monroe) for Lady Diana and performed the song at her funeral promising to never perform it pubically again.

Back to the review: Chris is an entertainer and yes, you may hate Lady In Red for being played over and over again but is it the artist's fault that he wrote a song that people want to listen to? I enjoy his music! Not everything has to be high-brow, sometimes we need to listen to love songs. Besides, there are some very good and intelligent songs by De Burgh, such as "Patricia The Stripper" or "Spanish Train" from the LP "Spanish Train". Spanish train is also on this album. I must admit that I don't enjoy his newer songs as much as I do the older ones and that's why the album gets 4 instead of 5 stars.

Ideal for people who love Chris De Burgh and his music, or for people who despise Chris De Burgh and wish to fuel their hatred of him.

A unicorn, a rainbow spitting zebra and what looks to be a horse sprouting a third eye are engaged in group sex on the illustrated cover of CocoRosie's second album. If that leads you to expect something playful and magical but also starkly screwed-up from the recording inside, you are on the right path. With assistance from Antony and Devendra, Ark is easily one of the most rewarding releases of 2005. The core of the music is made by singers/multi-instrumentalists Sierra and Bianca Cassidy, formerly estranged sisters who bonded over music and made their magical debut in a Paris flat. Their music has a lunatic music box feel that ought to appeal to fans of Bjork and Joanna Newsom, while the lyrics mine transgressive territory more often found in a book by JT LeRoy than a pop song. The true stars of the album are the singers' lovely, ethereal voices, which refract a '30s jazz-blues idiom through a strangely deadened, forever-sad delivery. It's the vocal equivalent of the toymaker's creations from Blade Runner and it is simply beautiful! -Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Since the mysterious and beautiful "La Maison de Mon Reve" surfaced in early 2004, CocoRosie have spent months traveling the world with the likes of Bright Eyes, TV On The Radio, Antony And The Johnsons, Devendra Banhart, and Blonde Redhead. Along the way, "Noah's Ark" took shape, where heart-offerings of friends, family, loved ones and lost ones surface gracefully, contributing depth to the narrative journey. "Noah's Ark" is the result of a rootless reality, a drifting consciousness across state lines, date lines, time lines...connected to the past, vague about the future. But the heart of these songs is always issued from a tender present.

4 out of 5 stars Some rough spots, but a great album overall.......2007-01-04

Despite the couple of songs I don't like (yet?), this disc has several outstanding songs, especially beautiful boys and noah's ark, but also KHole, and bear hides and buffalos. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars this band is much better live!.......2006-10-13

Let me start by saying, i respect these girls immensly. Cocorosie are in a class all their own, they are 100% experiemental. But sometimes as a musician, that either pays off or not so much. In this case, not so much. Although some of the songs are pretty, most of it just sounds like a bad acid trip at a circus. Which makes them really fun to see live. Throughout the whole concert i was mezmerised by their theatrics, their voices, and their stage prescence. Will i put their cd in my player and listen to it alone? No, not in less i want the scary clowns to come out and attack me. Yikes.

1 out of 5 stars save your money.......2006-07-27

This is a terrible album. Cocorosie is one of those bands that are fun to throw in with a bunch of other bands in a music related conversation to make your taste and knowledge of hip and independent music sound that much bigger than it really is. The cover artwork is pretty funny and cocorosie is a cool name, the only problem is that they make music that sounds like it does and they charge people money to listen to it.

1 out of 5 stars No.No.No.no...no...no...no...no.......2006-05-08

A sorry excuse for an album. This is not 'different' & wonderful; this is simply annoying noise.

2 out of 5 stars just too weird really.......2006-04-21

There's weird but listenable (see: Bjork).

Then there is acquired taste (see: Stina Nordenstam).

And then there is quirky but endearing (see: Joanna Newsom).

And after all that we hit Coco Rosie who are weird, quirky and an acquired taste but, if we are being brutally honest, there is not enough of the listenable and endearing about their music to make you tolerate the oddities.

For some this will be a delight and they will rave about the album till the cows come home. But most should be warned, this is eclectic in the extreme and simply does not have enough good tunes to make it a worthwhile listen.

3 out of 5 stars Good popular music........2005-08-14

The interesting issue about this recording is that Williams himself directs. It is always a plus to listen to music played by its author. Average performance by the orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Still great!.......2005-07-23

John Williams has the magic of translating music from movies. Even not watching the movies themselves, you can still understand what's happening because of the music that comes with it.

I'm happy the music industry compiled this marvellous CD together. It has all the greatest hits like Luke and Leia, Indiana Jones march and the star wars main theme. These songs are really some of the great examples of Williams' finest.

Even if the music isn't really that clear in movies, it's still gives a great impact on the stories. If you watch a movie made up of only dialogues and fights, what's the thrill, we can see fights anytime anywhere. So the element that makes the movies really attractive and interesting is the music itself.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performances as well as Music.......2005-04-06

When I picked up this CD I was amazed. I am a big Williams fan and love the Boston Pops. All the pieces are well done and flawless (except for some small tempo issues in "1941") Though all the peices stand out the handsdown best is "The Cowboys" Overture. The ritch sound as well as the great musicmanship make this a joy to here. Another good highlight is the "Midway" March. Midway was a relitivley underated score being in the middle of "Jaws" and "Star Wars" (Both of witch are also on the CD but, Jaws could have had solid feeling but is otherwise performed rather great) The rousing March in my opinion is as rousing as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "Superman" (Both yet again are on the CD and Superman's opening is absolutly breathtaking even better than the actual soundtrack. The Trumpet and French Horn fanfare makes you yourself visualize the might of the man of steel himself. But the Midway march is given a stunning representaion with the ritch, lush sound of the Boston Pop's brass section. The CD also has some of John Williams music for the concert stage such as the well known Olympic Fanfare (1984 Los Angeles), The Liberty Fanfare as well as the Mission Theme (The NBC news anthem) all offer a nice break from the movie scores. The only down side to the CD is that because it was made in 1987 it doesn't have music from Hook, Far and Away, Schindler's List and of course Jurassic Park. But even though it lacks Williams' early 90's scores its always a Joy to listen to as well as a treat for the ears. So i give it two thumbs up and *****.
I advise any John Williams/Boston Pops fan not to let this gem slip through their fingers! ;)

5 out of 5 stars De Williams los Boston lo mejor..........2004-12-14

Grandioso.

5 out of 5 stars Williams at His Finest....as of 1987.......2003-07-13

For fans looking for a sampler of John Williams' music circa 1987, this CD is a treasure trove of selected movie and special occasion themes. While not as comprehensive as Sony Classical's Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collection, there is enough variety to satisfy even the most casual Williams fan. Included here among his famous themes (Star Wars, ET, Superman, and Raiders of the Lost Ark) are his 1984 Olympic Fanfare, "The Mission" (NBC News theme), and the rousing Overture to the John Wayne film The Cowboys. As always, the Boston Pops Orchestra shines under the baton of Hollywood's -- and America's -- favorite composer!

4 out of 5 stars a great soprano voice.......2007-04-11

Emma Shapplin has such a beautiful voice. I left this cd in a hotel room along with the rest of my favorites, luckily they found it and mailed it back. I am very impressed with her vocal ability and the music is simply divine!

5 out of 5 stars Opratica Supreme.......2006-10-02

This is an amazing album, beautifully recorded. Its pop-ified classic Italian style mixed with the lyrics derived from "old Italian" and hints at classical melody make for a real delight. Extremely powerful vocals that pierce through the dark aesthetic like the beacon of a lighthouse through a dense fog at night. If you're a fan of Opratica, or a fan of Sara Brightman who wishes she would take her lyrics more seriously, you will love this album.
While many compare Emma Shapplin to Sara Brightman, there are some notable differences. First is the raw power of Emma's voice versus that of Sara. While Sara Brightman is an exceptionally talented artist, I would dread her performance without technical augmentation. Emma on the other hand avoids the elaborate digital editing processes to the degree often heard on Brightman albums. Accordingly, it is possible to observe minor performance irregularities. However, such nuanced "flaws" are inherent to all great vocalist, and constitute more of individual stylization than "flaw." The absence of such character in Brightmans recordings simply attests to the overuse of digital augmentation to produce artificially "perfect" recordings, in a fashion akin to air brushing a super model's picture. Played back on high end audio kit you can even here the occasional recoil of a pianos dampening pedal, something which would certainly be edited out of a Brightman recording. All these things attest to the raw and pure integrity of Emma's recording. Additionally, the lyrics, when translated, are much less insipid than the usual Brightman tune. Though Brightman had to marry Andrew Lloyd Webber to launch her career in full, I suspect Emma Shapplin's pure technical talent and more advanced aesthetic sensibility will assure her a successful cross-over career without any such convenient relationships.

5 out of 5 stars If You Like Emma..........2006-01-24

The reasons to listen to this album...
Beautiful woman with beautiful voice sings beautiful songs. This album is one of high-class standards of crossover genre (well balanced elements of classical, pop, electronic, New Age and even Celtic music are fused into this new genre). One hit - "Le Notte Eterna" worth the whole album.
I can`t tell you that I`m listening to this CD every day, but when I`m in the mood to hear some calm, light and beautiful but not much serious music - I`m listening to this album.

If you like this style of music, try also CD by
Spanish singer-songwriter Nadia "This Is My Life".
She also plays electronic keyboards and her music is very beautiful - mix of romantic pop, new age electronic music with the touch of light classical sound.
CD by Nadia was released by label Neuronium.

5 out of 5 stars How Can You Down Emma Shapplin?.......2005-03-16

You can't. That's the honest truth. The music is sensationally beautiful and it is magnificent that her voice is so gorgeous. I cannot believe her talent! I enjoyed the CD very much so, and as a matter of fact, I thought it was so wonderful that I listened to it for a week in a row! I am very pleased with it. I would recommend this to ANYONE even if they're not an Opera Fan. I personally adore Opera and I think it takes extreme talent to sing like Emma Shapplin or Operatica. I recommend Operatica: Shine and Operatica "O" Vol. 1 to anyone who likes Emma Shapplin as well.

5 out of 5 stars Queen of the night.......2005-02-04

Emma Shapplin's voice one of the moest beautyful voices i have ever heard. So lyric, so dramatic, so emotional.
She is the best coloratura soprano i have ever heard.

When Sting collaborated with Cheb Mami on the Brand New Day track "Desert Rose," he created a surprising demand for Arabic crossover pop. This collection provides a suitable next stop for those whose taste was whetted by that collaboration. Egyptian singer Natacha Atlas opens the album with "Mon Amie la Rose," a maudlin little French tune she twists through her wringer until it is utterly transformed. "Desert Rose" turns up as a frisky remix by Victor Calderone, while Rachid Taha and the trance choir, B'Net Marrakech, appear in the compelling, orchestrated "Qalantica." Mami is heard on his own on one tune, but is eclipsed by the gut-shredding Khaled, the undisputed king of Algerian rai. The harder-edged electronic outings are standouts, while the tracks that are the Arabic equivalent of adolescent pop don't hold up nearly as well. This compilation, however, mostly eschews the dross in favor of tunes that go the distance. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Mix down the vocals, and maybe.......2007-06-04

I loved Arabesque and Arabian Travels, but this is not trance. This is more like Arabian pop music. The vocals are irritating to me. Sting even shows up on one track. If you are looking for world trance, or something to chill out or relax to, forget this one.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of disappointing.......2007-02-02

I love world music and Putumayo CDs.
I also loved that Desert Rose song and the amazing voice of Cheb Mami with Sting.
I bought this CD expecting a sexy "One Thousand and One Nights" music style, or a good fusion of traditional and modern sounds, but instead, what I got was a KITSCH POP version of arabic songs.
Some of the songs are just bad taste, you just want to forward them as quickly as possible.
I should have guessed just by the look of the cover. It reflects the music as well. The painting might be nice, but the mix with the modern computer added photo image and the strange balls of roses just don't work well together. The same goes for the songs.
I don't recommend it, unless you're looking for cheesy disposable pop.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre Middle Eastern collection.......2006-12-21

This compilation of Arabic pop hits around the same time as Sting&Cheb Mami's "Desert Rose" hit and Putumayo's "Arabic Groove" album, not surprisingly. It's disappointing, since it focuses more on westernized Arabic hits than genuinely Arabic ones. For its surprising blandness, there are highlights-
1)A remix of Cheb Mami&Sting's hit song "Desert Rose." It's very danceable, and in sync with the spirit of the original.Cheb Mami and Sting had one of those rare great celebrity duets. They powerfully melded their styles, making something wonderful.
2)Khaled is always great. His songs are never a disappointment--no wonder he's called the King of Rai.
3)Amina's "Dis Moi Pourquoi" is an excellent dancefloor song.It was a hit in France, and musically,it works. It's French chanson meeting Tunisian pop.
4)Speaking of French chanson,Natacha Atlas radically re-imagines Edith Piaf's "Mon amie la rose",transforming it from a Gallic weepie into a sensual Arabic serenade.
5)Hakim,who is considered a prince of rai,has a great song.
6)Cheb Mami's "Hay wadi hay galbi" is amazing. While Khaled is almost Arabic R&B,and Hakim is a Middle Eastern boy band sort, this song shows off Cheb Mami's musical gymnastics. It's quite stunning. After hearing this,I got his "Saida" album.

Instead of getting this,I reccomend Putumayo's "Sahara Lounge" (its best Middle Eastern compilation)and "Arabic Groove." "Desert Roses" has a half-dozen hits, the rest are forgettable. If you like Middle Eastern music, explore Putumayo's compilations instead.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2005-07-23

I just bought this CD along with a bunch of other and I absolutely love it. It's great for belly dancing too as well as just listening to while you're doing housework.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Foray to Rye Music.......2004-12-16

This album is a splendid way to get into Rye music. Sting's hit single performance with Cheb Mami sparks interest, and the rest of the more obscure (in America, that is) tracks are all beautiful. Fun gift for somebody who is learning French (Maghreb music is often sung in French,) or just seeking out some more exotic music. Also, fabulously sultry dancing music!

4 out of 5 stars A Relaxing and Mellow Las Vegas?.......2007-06-12

I found this soundtrack quite enjoyable and I am not the world's biggest jazz fan. Don't get me wrong, I think jazz is a great but it isn't the first type of music I run to when I want to relax. However on the soundtrack for Leaving Las Vegas, it works. The songs on this soundtrack are very moody. The tempos are coarse and cool, mean and mellow.

There are a couple of vocal songs on this soundtrack, five to be exact. Three of the songs are by Gordon Sumner A.K.A Sting, which are wonderful piano/jazz/love songs. The songs are "Angel Eyes", "My One and Only Love" and "It's a Lonesome Old Town". As amazing as it might seem, Sting recorded all three of these songs in one day. I have always been a fan of Sting, all the way back to his days with The Police. These songs aren't written by Sting, rather covers of classic jazz tunes.

The other two songs with vocals are by Don Henley and The Palladinos. Don Henley's track again is a cover and it isn't bad. I have to be honest; this isn't my favorite track on the soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, Henley puts plenty of work into "Come Rain or Come Shine", yet it doesn't grab me like most of the other songs on this soundtrack. As for the song by The Palladinos "I Won't Be Going South For A While", this tune seems very out of place on this CD. Why, because the entire soundtrack is mellow and "I Won't Be Going South For A While" is loud, fast and almost bubbly. Some of the jazz/instrumental is mellow and some selections are louder than others, but the music tempo still has a good flow throughout, much like pieces of a puzzle fitting together. Even the songs by Sting and Don Henley blend well into the track selection. I guess that is why it is the last song on the CD. It isn't a bad song; it just doesn't seem to fit. I realize it is from the movie, hence why it is on the motion picture soundtrack. Consequently, with respect to music continuity it seems like a black sheep with the rest of the melodies.

As for the movie dialogue included in the soundtrack, that wasn't a problem for me at all. I actually liked it and felt it gave the entire listening experience some character. The dialogue is spoken on its own tracks, in between music, as introductions to music and in the middle of music almost as a bridge. Now Leaving Las Vegas is deep, dark drama cloaked as a romance or a romance cloaked as a deep, dark drama. Regardless this movie is very powerful, with that said some of the dialogue selected seems almost humorist. The dialogue doesn't seem straight up funny, just maybe a bit lighthearted, which is odd because this movie isn't funny or lighthearted.

Again Leaving Las Vegas is an interesting movie and has a special place in my nostalgic heart. I have already written a review of the movie here on Amazon.com, so I won't rehash what was already written about my first experience watching this film. However, this is a pretty good soundtrack and is a nice addition to this deep, dark drama cloaked as a romance or a romance cloaked as a deep, dark drama.

4 out of 5 stars I'm A Prickly Pear.......2005-09-26

A great CD - When you are alone and just want to get drunk and feel sad - this one is for you - ruggedthug.com

2 out of 5 stars Where's the rest of it??????.......2004-12-24

Why bother with a whole soundtrack if you are only going to put a handful of songs on it. The best tunes from the movie aren't even on the disc. An EP would have been sufficient for the Sting and Henly tracks. Not 4 songs and 21 tracks of dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars Dialogue included. Very refreshing........2002-09-10

Sting's version of various Jazz tunes is incredible. Don Henley's version of 'Come Rain Or Come Shine' is done with a lot of feel. 'Biker Bar' has a groove that inclines me to set the song on repeat, pick up my guitar, and just jam with it. Plus a lot of movie dialogue for a little variety . This one's a winner. If you're not a Sting fan, a jazz fan, or at least a fan of the movie then this probably isn't for you.

5 out of 5 stars The best song you'll ever hear.......2002-01-25

Nothin will give you emotions like that of Stings' my one and only love. It'll make you fly away. It's sad really but never sadness has been so inspiring of joy as this one.
You're alone with your girlfriend, outside a cold winter, leaves falling down from the trees, you put this song on and then embrace your lover..

5 out of 5 stars Wayne Hancock - Rockabilly.......2007-05-09

I had never heard of Wayne Hancock, until I purchased a CD of Hank Williams III. He talked highly of Wayne Hancock and recommended him on the insert inside his CD case. So, without ever hearing Wayne sing, I ordered this CD of him. He's amazing and every bit as good as Hank Williams III said. Another friend of mine heard this CD playing on my car's stereo and loved it immediately. Then they also ordered it for themselves. I'd highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars What the......?????.......2006-04-13

I cant believe that this guy isn't a household name. While I'm a big fan of Traditional Country Music, I picked this one up on a whim. How would I describe Wayne Hancock??? Well, how about Hank Penny on Meth!!!! I haven't heard this much excitement (or true musical genius) in a long, long, time. Yes, the voice takes a little getting used to, but after hearing a few songs, you relaize that only that voice could truly deliver the sound coming out of your speakers. It's no wonder Hank III is copying Wayne's delivery. While Wayne is obviously the leader of this sound, his musicians deserve the highest praise; "Brand New Cadillac" is like a punch in the gut...simply amazing guitar and rhythm work. My favorites here are "That's What Daddy Wants', "Thunderstorms and Neon Signs", and "Life On the Road". While I dont think Wayne Hancock could (or should) stick to the true Honky Tonk sound that he presents so well, it is good to see the influences of Hank Williams mixed in with balls-to-the-wall swing. I dont know if the world could handle a Wayne Hancock and Brian Setzer collaboration, but that would be a blast. I give this one a B+. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Best of should have been a box set.......2006-03-15

Wayne has so many great songs I could not have narrowed it down to 14. All the songs on this CD are great. You don't just listen to his music you feel it. I've seen him live over 20 times and enjoy it like it's my first everytime. After you check this one out and fall in love with it grap all the others... you won't be disappointed!
