Editorial Reviews

Noteworthy for the first album appearance of "19th Nervous Breakdown" and the hit version of "Time Is on My Side," this first collection in a long line of Rolling Stones retrospectives collects the early singles of a band that was slowly and surely becoming the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band. They're hungry here and they churn out a scruffy version of the Buddy Holly hit "Not Fade Away" as well as their own compositions ("(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Get Off of My Cloud"). Their ability to work ballads into their rough-hewn repertoire is apparent ("Play with Fire" and "As Tears Go By") and Jagger's persona as the devil incarnate is taking shape. --Rob O'Connor --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Glenn Miller Greatest Hits.......2007-04-11

Glenn Miller is my all-time favorite of the big band musicians. I was only nine years old when Glenn Miller's plane was lost. However, my parents managed a boarding house for young military men and their wives. The men were stationed at what is now Ellsworth AFB, in Rapid City, SD. The wives wiled away their days playing board games, or playing the piano and singing this type music. It is a wonderful memory for me. My father was a huge Glenn Miller fan, too, so we listened to his music frequently. This is an excellent collection of his hits; it would be hard to select a favorite, although "In the Mood" and 'Moonlight Serenade" would be at the top of the list.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Best Of.......2007-03-13

I'm not a huge fan of Fatboy Slim but this CD is great. Most of the songs you can hear all the time and there were a few I have not heard of at all. While most of these pay on commericals or in movies (mainstream) its good background music for parties.

5 out of 5 stars Who IS Fatboy Slim?.......2007-01-12

Well, I had NO IDEA who he was. Until I listened to this CD and recognized almost EVERY SINGLE ONE of the songs on it! These songs have been in TV commercials, movies, etc. We bought one for my brother in law for Christmas. EXCELLENT CD!!!! If you want to get a Fatboy Slim CD, this is the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2006-11-29

This is what happens when you compile the best songs of one of the best DJs ever. If you're a big fan, there's not much new here, and those who collect many CDs probably have most if not all of these tracks already. But if you're a big fan, as I am, having the collection "under one roof" is worth the additional cost.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive.......2006-09-29

I've been a casual fan of Fatboy Slim for years, but have never delved into their entire body of work. However, since I picked up this CD, I've become addicted. Why Try Harder is a great into to Fatboy Slim. Give it a try, and I'm sure you'll love it too. BTW - the new track "That Old Pair of Jeans" is the best FBS track yet.

5 out of 5 stars Why look harder?.......2006-09-14

If you want to hear, enjoy, and show off to others the genius that is Fatboy Slim, here you go.

As Matthew Blissmer said in his review, this is a GREAT CD to put on for friends that don't want to hear the (often excessively) long versions of each of the songs. I always ran into that problem... I loved the songs but they had awkward lead-in and lead-outs. In "Why Try Harder?", ALL the songs are beautifully edited, starting and stopping at exactly perfect times for the full effect of the song. No minute-long lead-out for "Going Out of My Head", and "Brimful of Asha" (one of my favorites) is cut perfectly down to size from the 7:30 full cut.

I can put this in a CD player and hit Shuffle and not be nervous about hitting an embarrassing song. They're all great.

If you're new to Fatboy Slim, or you've been following him for years, it doesn't matter, this is your CD. Clean up all those illegally-downloaded albums and mixes you were too hesitant to purchase, because this has it all in one neatly packaged, easily-purchasable CD! Time to pay your respects to the totally awesome Norman Cook in this totally awesome collection. Why look harder?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A dozen gem-Stones.......2007-02-14

BIG HITS (High Tide And Green Grass) is a solid distillation of the Rolling Stones' first few years. The album is heavy with hits, and stands the test of time-- a real tribute to one of the greatest bands ever.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass).......2006-07-27

This is one of the best CDs that I own. It brings back alot of memories and I love every song on it. I highly recommend buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Every Song a Diamond.......2006-06-11

Everybody loves "Satisfaction" who can't get enough of that song? But for me, my favorite song on this record is "Heart of Stone." Of course, I love the last two slow ones too. I love all the songs in between as well. Most of the songs on this excellent compilation were written by Mick and Keith and playing them, you can see what really great song writers they were (and still are). These songs are all diamonds, glowing in a fire, especially the very beautiful "As Tears Go Bye." You can never go wrong with the Rolling Stones, that's for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Play it Loud, but Turn it Down Toward the End.......2006-06-11

Every time I play this record I find myself reaching for the volume knob on my old, but still great McIntosh tube amp. Each song I seem to play a just a little louder than the last, till by the time I get to the Stones rockin' version of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" the JBL speakers I inherited from my parents, when they retired and bought one of those Bounder motor homes, are blowing the house down. I generally turn it down after "Fade Away" preferring to sort of mellow out during the band's gorgeous song "Good Times, Bad Times" and the very excellent "Play with Fire." Yeah, that's the way you should play this record, Play it Loud, but Turn it Down Toward the End.

5 out of 5 stars Satisfaction Still Guaranteed.......2006-06-11

This record was put together with songs that were on the British version of past records, B sides and a couple knock down, drag out hits. By the time this record came out the Stones had taken the world by Storm. Girls were screaming at their concerts, guys too, I'm told. But then how can you possible hold it in when Mick's on stage shouting out "Satisfaction." Boy I know I'd've been a screaming, wetting my panties too. "Big Hits" opens with "Satisfaction," ends with "Play with Fire" and every song between is a gem, especially their cover of Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now." I've said it before, I'll say it again, you can't go wrong with the Rolling Stones, they come with Satisfaction Guaranteed.

4 out of 5 stars Great mix of hard to find songs on CD that most have forgotten.......2007-07-13

I remember hearing these on the radio but had forgotten about most until I found this CD. From the upbeat instrumental version of TV's dragnet theme, to It's In The Book which believe it or not was actually played on the radio. These are songs that will be enjoyed again, if just only for the era they are from. And, a must have if you are an oldies collector.

1 out of 5 stars big hits of the fifties.......2007-06-08

With all the great music of the fifties this is the best you could come up with? This cd stinks only about three worth listening to. I wanted lisbon antigua, but I didn't think I would have to wade through all this trash.

5 out of 5 stars It's Unbelievable How Music Could Be This Good.......2006-06-24

The Dorsey brothers and Glen Miller were the greatest musicians of the World War II era. They kept so much of the public entertained during the war and gave so many Americans (and their allies) hope. Not even Joan Baez and Bob Dillan and their anti-Vietnam War songs are this good. This music is much better than the garbage that people call music today.

4 out of 5 stars Tommy Dorsey -Best All Around Dance Band!.......2005-05-09

The Dorsey band could do everything. The hottest Swing and the smoothest ballads and the liveliest pops and novelties. His band was every inch as good as The Miller, Goodman and Shaw bands and at times, even better!

Dorsey had several bands and his pre 1940 band is very different than his band of 1940 - 1946. The '40s band had a more dynamic sound to it, especially in the Swing instrumentals! Plus...all those great vocalists - Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Connie Haines and the Pied Pipers vocal group, not to mention Dick Haymes, Stuart Foster and the great Clark Sisters aka The Sentimentalists.

The recordings on the CD above are a mixture of 'both' of TD's band of the era.

All the sides on the CD are choice and the only reason I have rated the CD 4 stars out of 5 is because my 'personal best' are not all on there!

And with all due respect to the reviewer below, the version of "Opus One" on this CD *is* the original 1944 recording when TD was featuring a big string section in his band. "Inferior"? No such way.

*For more by me on the Dorsey band, click on the link below-

5 out of 5 stars Great sound quality, superb music.......2003-09-30

So many "greatest hits" compilations miss the mark either in quality or song selection. But this disc lives up to its billing as the "Best" of the Dorsey orchestra. It kicks off with one of the stellar and swingiest tunes of the Big Band era, "Opus Number One" (though this version is inferior to the more famous "single" version). It's hard to listen to this song and not appreciate the brilliant arrangement and musicianship displayed here. Along with Goodman's "Sing, Sing Sing" and Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" this has got to be in the top three of any Big Band all-time greatest list.

It's a pity that Dorsey has been somewhat forgotten today and shoved aside in preference of Benny, Glenn and Artie. Was he as good as those giants? No, but this disc shows that his band could swing, had a phenomenal young vocalist named Sinatra and that Tommy's trombone playing wasn't half bad. This is a must have album for anyone serious about the Big Band era.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely marvellous!.......2003-09-09

They're all here, his big hits and some more: "Opus one", "Indian Summer" and of course "Song of India", and they were songs to get us through a very dark decade. And we thank English radio broadcasting for bringing these tunes to a country where German Schlagers were all over the airwaves in the early 40's. If you loved these tunes by Tommy Dorsey then, you'll find the sound on this CD just wonderful. Bittersweet memories of friendship, our country united in a struggle against a huge enemy, and finally resisting occupation so that our children could enjoy that awful music called rock & roll in the 50's... Only kidding, some of the rock stuff was endurable, but nothing can beat the beat of a real big band like Tommy Dorsey's!

4 out of 5 stars "Opus one" the best of the best........2002-11-20

I have allways been a fan of Tommy Dorsey, and so will you when you listen to "Opus one", "Song of India" and "Marie" which, I think are some of his best work. Is it worth the price? If you are a fan of Tommy Dorsey and after, listening to the tracks, you will be, along with answering many times over, YES!

5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

5 out of 5 stars Blast from the past.......2007-01-09

This is a great collection of Twisted Sister. I definitely would recommend this to any fan of Twisted Sister. You can't find this type of good rock n' roll anymore!

4 out of 5 stars Cover doesn't say "GREATEST HITS".......2006-11-21

I have been a huge Twisted fan for over 25 years. I watched them evolve from their small club dates in upstate New York to their immense popularity in the mid eighties. I sadly watched as internal turmoil tore this band apart in the late eighties, was pleasantly surprised by their collaboration for "Heroes Are Hards To Find" from Dee's Strangeland movie and impressed by their reunion after 9/11. It was like they never left. However, for those of you who disapprove of this recording, please see that the cover does not say "Greatest Hits". Twisted was not about "greatest hits". They were about great music. Sure, they could have included great cuts like "Come Out And Play" or "Wake Up (the Sleeping Giant" (which may be, admittedly, one of their best tracks). However, they included several "live" tracks which is what makes them special. If you have never seen a "live" show, catch them before it is too late. They are the rare band who are amazing "live". Studio recordings do not do them justice. Okay, so not all of their best songs are included here. If you want all their great music, suck it up and buy their other CD's. You won't regret it. But, what IS here is what they were all about... great band and great music. Live on SMF's...

4 out of 5 stars Twisted Sister Rocks!.......2006-08-30

In continuation of the so-called Reagen Rock years, this compilation lives up to its name. Who doesn't love the groove from "I Wanna Rock"?

5 out of 5 stars It is what it says it is........2006-01-26

People, the name of the CD is "big Hits and Nasty Cuts", not "Twisted Sister's Greatest Hits and Nothing else." As a loooooong time Ts fan, I love the fact that this CD represents the full picture of the band. Sure, they had some huge hits in the hayday of hair metal, but in the late 70s and early 80s, they were one of the most vicious live acts around in terms of their intensity. the live tracks recorded at the Marquee Club in London show just how intense they were before their radio-friendly hits were recorded. I think the name of the CD says it all and no one should be surprised at what they are getting when they buy it. The Cd has equal helpings of their most well-known hits, as well as just enough early live stuff to show you what they sounded like before they were the darlings of MTV.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection--oddly organized........2007-01-18

A good collection of Harry James. Audio is mono--as it should be--with gentle processing. Double cd includes fairly thorough liner notes in a 12 page booklet. I found the organization of songs somewhat annoying. I would have preferred to have music in order of release date--but that's just me. This collection is far superior to--and boasts better audio quality than--the other Harry James compilation I own ("Best Of Harry James..." on Curb label), which contains only 12 cuts! Jasmine label is okay, though I usually prefer ASV/Living Era collections. Why does it seem like the best compilations of American music are issued by European labels?!

2 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2007-01-10

better to purchase the Harry James Trumpet Blues CD. It has the better versions of his songs with Helen Forest, including the better version of "I've heard that song before". Go figure!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Music by a Trumpet Wizard.......2006-08-06

No doubt about it! Harry James was a superb trumpet player. This CD presents the listener with most of his best works. The quality of the recording is quite good. And the orchestration leaves little to be desired. I would strongly recommend anyone interested in Swing and Boogie Woogie music purchase this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A bargain for the the best of this superb swing musician!.......2004-02-26

When I first saw the price on this 2-CD set of music from big band swing leader and trumpet maestro Harry James, I was skeptical. I expected a cheaply produced, awful sounding and unmastered collection of bad airchecks and other live recordings. What a wonderful surprise to receive what is probably the definitive collection ever of Harry James! The CDs not only sound good, but it contains all of James's classic hit recordings in their original versions as they were released as singles, as well as many overlooked gems any swing fan or big band fanatic would love to have.

Here we have James in all his different modes: as a virtuoso trumpeter ("Trumpet Rhapsody"), as a leader of a smooth, sweet band with superb vocalists (Helen Forrest singing "I Had the Craziest Dream"; the swooning instrumental "You Made Me Love You"), and as the leader of a hard swingin' band for lindy-hopping dancers ("I've Heard that Song Before," "Two O'Clock Jump," "Strictly Instrumental," and plenty more). His other big hits, "Ciribiribin," "Trumpet Blues and Cantabile," and "Music Makers" are here as well. The time period covered is immense, from James's first recording as a leader in 1939, to his post-war recordings in 1947. And it's all great - everybody will find something to love here.

Along with the classics, here are some of the big surprises waiting for you: a 1939 small-group recording of "One O'Clock Jump" that was James's first session as the leader of a band. (He had just recorded "One O'Clock Jump" with Benny Goodman before departing the Goodman orchestra, so he must have felt comfortable with "One O'Clock Jump" as a place to start.) There's a six-minute long, 1947 recording of an old Goodman stand-by, "Stompin' at the Savoy," that turns the whole piece upside down and makes something entirely new out of it. Helen Forrest belts out a wartime morale raiser, "He's 1-A in the Army but A-1 in My Heart" I had never heard before - and any chance to hear more of the divine Ms. Forrest's voice is welcome! There's also some wonderful vocals from Kitty Kallen on this disc as well. And some swingy surprises I've never heard before: "Dodgers' Fan Dance" (written for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Harry James's favorite team), "Cross Country Jump," a two-part version of the swing anthem "Moten Swing," "Flatbush Flanagan," and a sweet, beautiful rendition of a song that's usually a jumping blues number, Fats Waller's "Ain't Misbehavin.'" There's even a track where James plays trumpet with just a rhythm section backing him, a great opportunity to hear his trumpet chops in their pure glory. (And man, could this guy play!)

All this for $14.99! I couldn't believe the quality and the quantity I got when I finally received these discs, opened them up, and slapped them in my CD player. (And let me tell you, they're not leaving my CD changer for a while!)

This is a bargain: jazz fans, lovers of 40s music and wartime nostalgia, swing dancers, big band nuts, grab this now before someone comes to their senses and starts charging more!

5 out of 5 stars Swing at its best.......2003-03-08

Harry James was, along with many other more well known artists of the WWII era, (Ie. Glenn Miller,Tommy Dorsey) a pionner of swing in it's rawest form. The basic foundations of his blues inspired compositions have been the baseboard of jump jivin' dancehall swing that we here all over the radio today and emulated by modern artists such as the Stray Cats and a myriad of Rockabilly groups heretofore and everything in between.
James took this genre to the nth degree, and went all over the map with it, but never becoming blase or redundant. He had an inimitable knack for composing low-slung blusey trumpet laden instrumentals right alongside jazz infused swinging jump jive and on into Doris Day backed vocal ballads, as can be heard on the wonderful soundtrack to the movie Young Man with a Horn which featured James' Orchestra and the man's wildly talented trumpet virtuoso.
James' music inpired more than this wonderful musician was ever given credit for, and any lover of the swing era would be amiss to not listen to, and discover what this awesome musician gave to us.
