The next time your mother tells you to eat your green beans because people are starving in Africa, you might reference "Eat Some More," one of 11 ferocious tracks on Alice Cooper's appropriately titled Brutal Planet. Though the artist who's arguably the greatest influence on Marilyn Manson has been doing this for longer than most Manson fans have been alive, he's still getting a lot of mileage out of the Angry Young Man archetype. Forget most of what he did in the late 1970s and early '80s; most people probably have. But since 1989's Trash, Cooper's turned out fresher and better recordings than the vast majority of his musical descendants, and Brutal Planet is no exception. The fact that it's a concept album is neither here nor there. Sure, there's quite a bit of cerebral content, but Brutal Planet is not a lecture. It's a rant, as enraged as anything any artist half Cooper's age could come up with, but with the perspective of someone old enough to know better. Alice Cooper, environmental activist? Well, stranger things have happened. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
A CLASSIC FROM ALICE.......2007-05-29
Brutal planet is one of best albums of the last few years. Released in 2000, it contains some great songs with a different type of hard rock sound. Some say it is Nu-metal, but i love this album. It contains 11 tracks or 12 on some issues of the album. The extra track is Cant sleep, clowns will eat me. Back to the album, it really delivers the goods from the opening title track with an unforgettable riff. Do yourself a favour and buy this if you are into alice. Other great tracks include sanctuary, blow me a kiss, pick up the bones, gimme, it's the little things & cold machines.
Coopers Heaviest Album.......2006-12-17
The second album in Cooper's Christian morality play trilogy finds Cooper and the band in "brutal" form. This is a seriously heavy album, but not in the same way as his 80's hair metal period. This down and dirty heavy ground rumbling metal release. Musically Cooper goes in a completely different direction from his last disc, but it comes off as fresh and relevant. There is very little of the trademark Cooper humor to be found here. The Coop is pissed off and not going to take it any more. The lyrics are very serious dealing with the state of the world we live in today. The album is a full on rant with one of Alice's most powerful collection of musicians backing him up. The album was co-written with guitar, bass, keys man Bob Marlette. The band also features ex Kiss drummer Eric Singer and guitarist Ryan Roxie who would become Cooper's main writing partner on the next few albums after this one. "Brutal Planet" is the darkest, heaviest album of Cooper's career and just about every song on it is a good one. Some highlights include the opener "Brutal Planet" pounds the listener with the description of a world where existence is indeed perilous and difficult. Cooper's vocal sneer indeed conjures up images of a truly loathsome place. "Sanctuary" is a comment on 9 to 5 working "zombies" and the life they (us) live in. "Eat Some More" takes on the subject of world starvation as only Alice could word it. "It's The Little Things" is the only song on the album with even a trace of humor. It harkens back to the past by quoting "No More Mr. Nice Guy" and "Welcome To My Nightmare". "Pessi Mystic" almost sounds like Black Sabbath at times finding Alice taking on psychics, and CNN with the chorus of "shut up, shutp" it is another powerful vicious song "Take It like A Woman" is pretty much a sequel to "Only Women Bleed". The album closer "Cold Machines" sees Cooper beating modern day wannabe Marylyn Manson at his own game. All the rest of the songs on the album are also solid. After a career as long as Alice's he really has nothing left to prove, but on "Brutal Planet" he proves that he can still put out relevant thought provoking music as good as people half his age.
Yikes and Wow.......2006-11-15
Good God almighty, where in the world did this come out of? No album by Alice in his catalog could possibly be as unexpected as this, except for "Dada". What made "Dada" so amazing was its sheer genius in the midst of the novelty-wasteland of Alice's output at the time. This album is at least slightly prepared-for by "The Last Temptation," although the dead-eyed, laser-focused commitment of this album makes "Last Temptation" something of a nature walk.
The album opens with "Brutal Planet," and from the very first bars, you can already tell something serious is going on: "We're spinning round on this ball of hate" is the first line of lyrics, accompanied by a big metal chug-a-lug. And then, lyrically, it's all downhill from there. A relentlessly nihilistic critique. But what steps this up even one more notch of awfulness (good awfulness, mind you) is the Heavenly chorus of angelic types, who see the earth as perfect, lovely, wonderful. With a snarl that Alice has rarely lavished on anything with such fire, he invites these heavenly naifs to come down to earth and check it out. Meanwhile, the music is equally relentless, and every bit worthy of the sentiment expressed.
With "Vicious Young Man," Alice lets the mind of a Columbine-type teen get his lyrical ya-yas out. Alice has always had a particularly keen social eye, but here he has nailed ... hell, I'm not going to resort to a platitude. The piece is especially acerbic next to the next song, "Sanctuary," which is the 20- or 30-something version of the wicked young man's angst. In both cases, the heavy, snazzy guitar work keeps things moving along at a brutal pace. At least for the chorus of this song, there's a certain irony that provides a sort of relief from the granite-grimness of the foregoing.
It is apparent from this album that Alice has nothing to prove, because he doesn't need to. Even so, with the opening lick of "Blow me Away," one is put slightly in the mind of Korn. Moreover, the psychological skewed gender politics one might conceivably apply to Korn are here made explicit: "Blow me a kiss cuz I'm black, blow me a kiss cuz I'm gay ... blow me away." The kind of defiance in "Brutal Planet," that challenged Heaven itself to come down and be held accountable for the mess on earth, here is embodied in the person who is the target of the world's wicked young men: "Blow me a kiss then blow me away."
In "Eat Some More (Taste the Pain)," over-consumption, world starvation, and wasting food comes into the laser-focus of Cooper's critique. Whatever possible kitsch this could result in, the heaviness of the music practically forces one to take it all very seriously, even when the lyrics seethe with sarcasm, "It's not nice to waste." In particular, the lyrics seem aimed to nauseate. While in "Pick up the Bones," equally unnerving lyrics, with scattered bodies and a setting that is the shattered ruins of some unnamed place, tells the story of some otherwise unidentified massacre. What is noticeably missing from all of this is Alice's usual irony, and the result is really very amazing. His dark intelligence blisters through this music with a scourge-like sense of a juggernaut--and the music keeps pace continuously, as the ample, musical version of Cooper's lyrics.
"Pessi-Mystic" gives a break from the heavy music at first, with an acoustic eerie opening, that seems to allude to the song "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. This is short lived, and more heavy music comes blistering along. And once again, Cooper gives voice to another bleak character, who growls, "I can't hear a word you say, so shut up, shut up, shut up"--a spot-on expression of today's pessimistic types.
"Gimme" starts also with a friendly little thing but Cooper is not about to let up. Seconds into the song, the next heavy, blazing riff comes blasting out. In this particular case, uninhibited acquisitiveness is married to Satanic overtones of selling one's soul to a false friend--at least until "Kneel down and tell me what you need." Is it God talking then? The narrator should be the devil but ... The milky irony of the vocals here at least provides some relief from the relentless assault. Moral ambiguity and grinding gruitars.
"It's the Little Things" is the closest to old, funny Alice this album offers: "You can burn my house ... but if you talk in the movies I'll kill you right there. It's the little things." By close, this doesn't mean very close. The novelty here is a bit too forefronted, but there has to be a breather somewhere, right?
In the previous song, the lyrics allude to "Welcome to my Nightmare" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy." In "Take it Like a Woman" the sudden and startling piano ballad obviously glances back at "Only Women Bleed." Not exactly unempathetic, it also (as the title suggests) does not favorably look upon taking it like a woman. Even so, "I know you must have felt the pain." This is as close to empathetic as the album gets.
The closer, "Cold Machines," starts off with an obvious allusion to Marilyn Manson, although the lyrical terrain that shimmers and flickers between the death-march chords is some mental asylum world of robots kind of place--a conflation of cold, impersonal machines--all attached to the chorus, where the narrator declares he doesn't want to be just a memory.
In all, with the exception of the comparatively "light" "Take it Like a Woman," this album is non-stop from one end to the other. Admittedly, almost thankfully, the relentlessness does somewhat let up toward the end of the disc (from "It's the Little Things" on). Nevertheless, it's hardly something one would want to listen to every day. One star off for the let up of pressure on the last three songs, even if I'm grateful for it.
If "Brutal Planet" truly conjures a brutal world, then this is an eminently worthy sound track for it. To have expected something this ferocious out of Cooper at this point would be definitely long-odds, but Cooper has long proved himself capable of bucking the odds.
Alice, Brutal Alice.......2006-08-16
Been a fan of AC since I was 4 (now 33). This is his BEST album ever!!! Still, it predacessors: DRAGONTOWN, THE EYES OF ALICE COOPER and DIRTY DIAMONDS can't touch this album. (Though EYES is a great, fun AC album, too).
This album is, well, BRUTAL. Lyricly it's sinister, tough and thought provoking with social angst=All the essential elements of a great AC album. It's all here on the title track,Eat Some More, Pick Up the Bones, Wicked Young Man and Blow Me A Kiss. Like Bob Ezrin did with KISS on REVENGE, he helps out again the Legendary Alice to make a top notch, heavy rock album. (Plus Eric Singer of KISS (The new CATMAN) drums on this Alice Gem = and Also did on the KISS: REVENGE album!!). From start to finish, you can't just listen to a handfull of tracks or listen to it halfway/It's the type of album you pop into the cd player and let it Rip!!! The production is awesome, sound is balls to the wall and all the track orders is the perfect flow of heavy hitting rock n' roll by the Godfather of Theatrical Rock!!! If I could, I'd give the cd 10 stars!!! FANTASTIC HEAVY ROCK ALBUM. Buy it!! It'll be worth every penny to have this cd in your heavy rock collection!!
Gotta love Alice!.......2006-07-31
This is one of my favorite albums by the master of shock rock himself ALICE COOPER! Alot heavier than previous albums, this record deals with Heaven and Hell, evils of man, death and destruction, loss and loneliness. A great album. brutal and soft at the same time. Another amazing release from Cooper.

Alice gets hard and heavy.......2007-05-09
I have been a fan of Alice Coopers music for many years , his "Brutal Planet" cd is by far my favorite A.C. cd . This is a very heavy album and contains more of AC's great lyrics . Check out the songs Brutal Planet ,Wicked Young Man and Eat Some More. This cd is a must for any fan of good heavy metal .
Dragontown is also a very very good cd . I wouldn't rank it up there with Brutal Planet but to get them both in one package at a very low price was a deal I could not pass up.
The downside is , as with all Recall cd sets , the liner notes do not give you very much info , just the bare minimum .
I rate Brutal Planet a 5 and Dragontown a 3 - Check them out

Alice Cooper rocks this Brutal Planet!.......2000-09-04
The King of ShockRock makes his triumphant return in the heavy CD Brutal Planet. The songs are hard rocking and powerful, with striking social comments that one doesn't hear from your average rock musician.(Especially "Blow Me a Kiss" and "Wicked Young Man") "Its The Little Things" combines fast-paced music with Cooper's fine sense of irony; he quotes two of his more notable past hits within the lyrics. "Pick Up The Bones" has both haunting music and classic Cooper undertones. The new ballad, "Take It Like A Woman" is similar to his previous masterpiece "Only Women Bleed." The weakest cuts are "Eat Some More" (a not-so-subtle commentary on conspicuous consumption) and "Pessimystic", a hard to listen to song incorporating a chorus of "Shut up shut up shut up" all sung in a minor key. Perhaps the best track on the whole CD is the bonus track "Can't Sleep, The Clowns Will Eat Me." A welcome return to tongue-in-cheek monster-in-the-closet Alice, and decidedly reminiscent of his string of "Steven songs," this song alone makes the CD worth it. Although BP is not quite the masterpiece of Cooper's earlier days, it is a very close second. I highly recommend it for both the new cooper fans, and the classic fans as well.

I can't Stand this album musically.......2003-09-25
"Brutal Planet" is Alice's concept album dealing with a very dark and violent futuristic world. It is quite apparent he is taking inspiration from today's news headlines.
The lyrics are some of the best Alice has written in years. Musically, this album, in my opinion, is totally unlistenable. I am no fan of the Industrial Rock/Alternative Rock sound of Rob Zombie and Disturbed and Alice should know better than to copy this tuneless branch of Rock. I suppose the music was meant to underscore the subject matter of the songs. While I can respect this notion, I can't support this effort by one of my all-time favorite artists. Ditto for "Dragontown" as it follows this same musically sorry vein to a one-time trip in my cd player. I PRAY that "The Eyes of Alice Cooper" is a musical departure from these last two HIDEOUS collections.
Alice Cooper is afraid of being labled as an "...oldie". I feel Alice should embrace his status as one of the best (and most underrated) performers and a member of one of the best rock groups( The Alice Cooper Group) and try not to take lessons from "students" such as Rob Zombie. Zombie may be a Alice Fan, but he is a poor substitute and will never get it right.

Alice Cooper.......2007-05-31
Alice Cooper's Brutal Planet is cutting edge Cooper. My son and I both bought a copy and we listen to it ALOT!! It is probably my favorite Cooper, I like it better than Dirty Diamonds, which was newer, but not so much the Cooper style that I enjoy so much. For the all-time Cooper fan, no collection is complete without Brutal Planet.
Raw, right between the eyes.......2007-03-10
What on earth did this come from. Like some sort of cheese off dinosaur of heavy rock, AC comes out of the 90's and into the new century like some sort of Jurassic Park denizen eating the little bands for breakfast.
While some may decry the nu-metal tinge to this album I can only applaud the desire to stay current, to take the desired pieces of modern metal and weld them to the AC shock rock template. This Bob Marlotte produced album uses lots of shiny technology to take pummeling riffery circa '00 and allowing it full partnership with Alices' vocals in the mix. And the vox here match the music, taut and delivered with real punch. Just take a listen to the title track or it's follow up - Wicked Young Man. It will give you a very good idea of what this album is about. And the lyrics are as cold as the battle hardened music, Alice really showing the young pups like Jonathon Davis how your supposed to write shock rock lyrics.
A few tunes don't quite achieve total success - Eat Some More and Pick Up the Bones may not float your boat, but such is the single mided drive of the album as a whole you can forgive the odd bit of clunkiness.
This album is Alice rejuvenated, like a guy kickstarted by a lightning bolt and he's evidently decided (as of 2000) that he has no interest in becoming a heritage act just yet and wants to continue expanding his catalogue in a meaningful way as a working rock act.
Recommended.
Classic Alice album.......2001-04-23
The sequel to The Last Temptaiton took a long time getting here. It's sci-fi theme is reflected very much in it's metalish sound. But make no mistake, it's the same music Alice has always done, just heavier. The album starts off bleak and depressing, rather typical of Alice's earlier works, but rather than the nightmares of fantasy he used to delve into, this new nightmare is all the more real. Songs about nazism and killing your school pals are just as dark as songs from Welcome To My Nightmare about deflowering the children and having sex with dead bodies. The difference being on those albums, the songs weren't nasty until you really thought about them. Here however, I can't help but feel a little uncomfortable singing along to a song about reading 'meine kampf daily just to keep my hatred fead'. Thing is, where most bands moan about the state of the world, Alice doesn't. He doesn't try to change your mind about things, or provoke a reaction, he just tells it like it is, which is what makes it so disturbing. He accepts it, never for a minute moaning about the dead children in Pick Up The Bones. It shows almost a complaicancy for death and the apocalyse, why oh why do we enjoy this stuff so much? lol. Perhaps the fact that the riffs here are more solid than anything he's done of late, and the concept of the album shines through brilliantly keeping the whole album sounding pretty much the same throughout. The only bad part I'd say is Cold Machines where Alice does foray into nu-metal territory a little and there is not one guitar solo. I think thats the only album you could describe as filler though. Other than that, every song is great, not lettin down for a second. It's just a...cool album, classic Alice has finally returned ! Top cuts - Brutal Planet, Wicked Young Man, Pick Up The Bones, Blow Me A Kiss, Take It Like A Woman, Pessi-mystic
Alice's best CD for ages!.......2000-06-25
I ordered this CD purely due to withdrawal symptoms - I had not heard a decent Alice Cooper for nearly a decade (i.e. Hey Stoopid, or maybe Trash. Classicks doesn't count). Acutally, I first heard it on Alice's official website - they have the whole title track to download in mp3 format. I was just blown away the first time I heard it! So quickly, I bought the CD, hoping that the other tracks were just as good. I put it in my stereo, and put it on, starting with track 2 as I had allready heard the first one. I could tell from the very first guitar notes that this song was going to be a good one. However, nothing could prepare me for what was to come - a thoughtful, violent song about nazis (or nazi followers, anyway), with a strong rhythm and excellent chord changes.
It seems that Cooper is tending towards more british-sounding songs. Anyone who has heard some of his latest songs (e.g. the one that was on the X-files soundtrack CD) will know what I mean. This is not a bad thing as it brings a more hard, gritty edge to the music, and makes it seem more fresh and new.
Cooper even throws in a couple of ballads, with "take it like a woman" being one of my favourite Alice Cooper songs YET. These sound great, and compliment the harder, more loud songs brilliantly.
I have introduced 2 people to Alice Cooper just by letting them listen to the title mp3 (before I bought the album) and both of them loved it. That's how good it is!
If this is the european import ( i'm not sure if it is or not) then it comes with a limited edition poster and screensaver. That is the reason I have not given it 5 stars - the screen saver is utterly pathetic, as it is just a slideshow of 3 different pictures. The poster is excellent, though.
All in all an essential purchase for Alice fans, and even for people who are interested in this type of music and want to start a decent CD collection.
Well done Alice!
Alice Cooper Brutal Planet.......2000-06-25
I loved this CD not only becasuse I am a big Alice Cooper fan, But because it is truly a work of art. Alice shows that it dosen't matter how old you are you can still rock! On this CD he dosen't have the typical Horror movie lyrics most people know him for. Instead he has made songs that talk about world hunger and everyday life. With some Alice Cooper twists of course. It has some of the same type of rock he used on the CD Hey Stoopid with a more 90's approach. A great CD that any Alice fan should own and any fan of good rock music.
