5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-10-30

Upon first listen I told myself that this must be a compilation of all their hits. Nope. This is merely their sophomore effort which is jam backed with fantastic tunes. I love the upbeat sound, the fuzzy guitars and vocals, and how catchy every song is. This album includes the major hit "Tired of Waiting for You" but there really isn't a bad track on the album. Great party album. I feel like people would definitely get up and dance to this. You can't help it! Check it out. It's a must-listen.

3 out of 5 stars Unos pocos destellos de Ray.......2003-12-27

Where My Baby Is Tonight.

5 out of 5 stars Great early Kinks.......2002-01-18

I bought this CD for the track "Nothin' in the World...", a fine bluesy ballad that's difficult to find elsewhere. However, all the tunes on this second release from the seminal British Invasion band are fun to hear after almost forty years. Hearing a youthful Ray Davies sing "See My Friends" is a treat. The remastered sound is great. Worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT 60's British Sound! Kinks Rule!.......2001-09-13

This is a WONDERFUL remastered disc (23! tracks) that captures the moment when Ray Davies and the boys truly found their voice.
It's packed with wonderful songs (e.g. "Nothin' in the World Can Stop Me Worryin' About That Girl", "Something Better Beginning","Tired of Waiting For You","Come On Now"). Great guitar work (Thanks to Dave Davies),excellent 60's 4-track British studio production sound, and those oh-so-slightly cynical Ray lyrics make this disc a MUST HAVE! Note: This review is for the import Sanctuary release ASIN #B0001XLXE8, not the US Castle version. (See also the remastered "Something Else By the Kinks").

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don't you ever change now..........2006-08-25

'Kinda Kinks', released in March 1965 is often unfairly slagged for its rushed production and supposed mediocre songwriting. I feel this is unfair, though some of the songs are definitely far below the quality of subsequent Kinks releases. This is where the REAL Ray Davies emerged as an introspective writer. While the debut was a typical British debut with many R&B covers, the second is dominated by originals. As with the first, a major hit single, "Tired of Waiting for You", appeared on the record just as "You Really Got Me" was on the debut. This was rare for British only releases which did not often feature singles. Other standouts include the "Tired" b-side, "Come On Now", another showcase for Dave's wild guitar and vocal style. My favorites are ths quieter tunes such as "Don't Ever Change", probably my fav early album track, "Nothin' in This World" (featured in the film 'Rushmore') and "So Long". Probably the most famous album track on 'Kinda' would be "Something Better Beginning", another great ballad in the tradition of "Stop Your Sobbin'". Lowlights would include a pitiful cover of "Dancing in the Streets", obviously the band was desperate to fill record space, and such subpar tunes as "You Shouldn't Sad" and "Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight". The Castle release includes some of the Kinks greatest singles and their 2nd ep of original album material and for this reason alone does THIS 'Kinda Kinks' get 5 stars as opposed to maybe 3 for the original album. "Set Me Free", "I Need You", "See My Friends", "Who'll Be the Next in Line", "Such a Shame" and "A Well Respected Man" among others display the pop brilliance of Davies and the Kinks circa mid to late 1965. As album artists however the best was yet to come!

5 out of 5 stars Ray Davies begins to emerge as a songwriter.......2006-06-17

Though critics often slag the Kinks second album as generic British Invasion, it's the album's look at Ray Davies emergence (rather than arrival) as a songwriter within the confines of the invasion that's so compelling. Musically the Kinks hadn't progressed from the minimalist rock 'n' roll of their 1964 debut, but with ten of the original UK album's dozen tracks penned by Davies, the band was beginning to develop their own unique voice.

The hit single, "Tired of Waiting for You," and its powerhouse flip, "Come on Now" show both sides of Davies' genius. The first is a forlorn plea that points to the personal songs that would become Davies' forte, while the latter is a rave-up with a wicked guitar riff that surely set London dance floors ablaze. Davies' pen sticks to spurned and cheating lovers for the foot-stomping "Look For Me Baby" the confessional "Nothin' in the World Can Stop Me Worryin' 'Bout that Girl," and the bluesy "Wonder Where My Baby is Tonight." His nostalgic and sentimental streaks reveal themselves in the folky "So Long," and he lightens up for the Brill Building styled "Don't Ever Change," the Merseybeat "You Shouldn't Be Sad," and the hesitant, melancholy "Something Better Beginning."

Sanctuary's 23-track reissue adds a full eleven bonus tracks, gathered primarily from UK singles and EPs. "Who'll Be the Next in Line" is as scathing as any kiss-off of the British Invasion, "Set Me Free" is a superb mid-tempo example of the Kinks' beat-era playing and Davies' heartbroken anger, "I Need You" is a grade-A garage-rocker with a classic Dave Davies guitar solo, the droning "See My Friends" adds early Eastern influences, the country-tinged "Wait Till the Summer Comes Along" suggests the band's future Muswell Hillbillies phase, and "A Well Respected Man" is one of the jewels of Davies' songwriting catalog. A previously unreleased demo of "I Go to Sleep" (a song better known in its cover by The Pretenders) closes the CD with Davies accompanied only by piano.

The delicacy and depth that Davies would develop as a songwriter is only beginning to emerge here, but even among the seemingly by-the-numbers lost-love lyrics, his uniquely introspective and nostalgic voice is loud and clear. The production is still quite rudimentary and the arrangements simple (amplified, no doubt, by the speed with which they had to record a second album), but the variety of styles with which the band dabbles suggests the depth of their future efforts. This is a superb introduction to the Kinks early work, and will be an eye-opener for those weaned on their subsequent resurgences as rock opera and arena rock stars. This crisply remastered 23-track mono reissue on Sanctuary (not Rhino as Amazon mistakenly lists it) is the version to get. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

great song that one, nothin' in this world... heard it for the first time in the Rushmore soundtrack so I bought that kinks record

3 out of 5 stars Thank you, Steve Vrana!.......2004-04-11

Indeed, this is a confusing release. Even the AMG All Music Guide didn't get it right (they list it in 1990 under the Rhino label, with no write-up for clarification).

Thanks, Steve. Your review certainly helped explain the strange tracking on this strange re-issue.

4 out of 5 stars Another Terrific Kinks Kollection!.......2000-01-09

This is the second of a series of Essential Records/Castle Communications releases of the Kinks first ten albums in the U.K. As such it also includes 11 bonus tracks not listed by Amazon.com. Essentially this reissue is a combination of the U.S. versions of Kinda Kinks (plus "Tired of Waiting for You" and "Come on Now") and Kinks Kinkdom (minus "It's Alright" and "Louie, Louie," which were on the Castle reissue of the Kinks' debut).

Sound a little confusing? It is. It's just another example of how America's Pye Records counterparts butchered the Kinks' albums so UK and US releases didn't match up until 1967's Face to Face. [The same thing happened to the Beatles until the release of Sgt Pepper in 1967.]

Here's the bonus tracks: 13. Everybody's Gonna Be Happy (UK #17), 14. Who'll Be the Next in Line (US #34--a crime it didn't hit No. 1!), 15. Set Me Free (US #23), 16. I Need You, 17. See My Friends (UK #10), 18. Never Met a Girl Like You Before, 19. Wait Til the Summer Comes Along, 20. Such a Shame, 21. A Well Respected Man (US #13), 22. Don't You Fret, 23. I Go to Sleep (unreleased demo)

All 23 songs were recorded between December 1964 and August 1965, with nine of the first 12 tracks recorded during a 3-day recording session Feb. 15-17!

Just like the year before which saw the release of the Kinks debut album, the band was extremely productive. However, unlike their debut Ray Davies wrote all but two of the songs ("Dancing in the Street" and "Naggin' Woman"). In the liner notes Ray laments the lake of time the band was given in the studio for their second album: "It had better songs on it than the first album, but it wasn't executed in the right way. It was just far too rushed."

Despite the lack of adequate time, Ray and the band made some memorable music. "Tired of Waiting for You," the big hit here, is a far cry from the raucus "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night" which fueled their debut. The song went to No. 1 in the UK and No. 6 in the US and showed that the band had staying power.

The biggest leap in songwriting for Ray was "A Well Respected Man," a song that would point the way for the kind of introspective, working class lyrics that would be reflected in much of his best work for the next quarter of a century.

While the Kinks would go on to make even better albums, there is essential listening on this disc. RECOMMENDED

On the surface, the Kinks fit in neatly with the whole British Invasion, but from the start there was something...well, kinky about this London quartet. Like many of their modish mid-'60s brethren, the Davies brothers, bassist Peter Quaife, and drummer Mick Avory raided the songbooks of Chuck Berry and other rock & roll and R&B mainstays. (They were particularly drawn to the swamp blues of the Excello label, as early covers of "I'm a Lover Not a Fighter," "Got Love If You Want It," and "Naggin' Woman" testify.) But Ray Davies's early compositions give clues to his I'm-not-like-everybody-else worldview. This two-records-on-one-CD package presents the at times still ungainly group's 1964 debut and '65 sophomore effort. Highlights include the supercharged "You Really Got Me" (arguably the font from which heavy metal flowed), "Stop Your Sobbing," and "Tired of Waiting for You," Ray tunes all, and all indicators that here was an uncommon talent. --Steven Stolder

1 out of 5 stars Hogwash!.......2005-09-17

In a way, I can't believe that there are still some new copies of this release floating around out there, but then I remember why I'm so disgusted with this release, then find myself wondering how Mobile Fidelity was able to continue pawning them off-ESPECIALLY at such a rediculous price!!! Allow me to explain:
Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab went into great detail in their accompanying album inserts explaining how each album (later, compact disc) was prepared for release. They stated that if the actual master reduction tapes could not be used, then any intention of releasing that particular album was scrapped.
If you own a copy of this album, and if you know anything about the production thechniques employed by Shel Talmy on the Kinks' behalf, (I'm sure that Pye records was responsible too) then you know that "You Really Got Me" was recorded in something far less than resembling perfect conditions. In fact, the version of the song that Talmy produced was never released. Ray Davies HATED it, calling it "Spectorian" due to Talmy's over-liberal use of the reverb knob on the final mix, and going so far as to insist that if it were released that way, he would never pick up a guitar again!
So, Pye records gave them enough money to book three hours at a tiny studio to record the song again. Who produced is a matter of debate. What IS certain is that Ray WAS shouting at Dave to play his heart out during the guitar solo because if their attempt at re-recording the song failed, Pye would have (quoting Ray Davies) "pulled our fingernails out."
He came out of the studio that day a happy man. The version we all know and love was in the can...in MONO! Yes, you read right...MONO! No reverb in one channel and dry in the other, no bass on one side and treble on the other. Pure, unadulterated MONO! And this continued to be the case until Reprise records decided to issue a stereo version of "You Really Got Me" on their equivalent of "Kinks," naming the album after the hit single.
Since the "You Really Got Me" single was recorded at a different session and a cheaper studio than the subsequent album they would record, the song appeared in MONO on the British version of the stereo album because that was (and still is) the only way the song existed. However, when Reprise records released the stereo version of the "You Really Got Me" LP, the song was in FAKE stereo. In fact, it was in one of the most hard-to-bear-in-headphones forms of FAKE stereo that has ever been hatched! One channel was left dry, while the other channel was flooded with ungodly amounts of reverb, creating a completely unnatural sound. Then, as though to dump salt into the gaping wound they had made, Reprise released stereo counterparts to the next five albums, "Kinks Size," "Kinda Kinks," "Kinkdom," "Greatest Hits," and "Kontroversy," all with the same hideous tinkering.
Imagine my surprise as I sat down to listen to Mobile Fidelity's version of The Kinks' first two albums. "You Really Got Me" has, yes, you guessed it, a dry MONO mix in one channel and ton upon ton of reverb in the other. So much for using the original mix-down tapes, huh?!
Don't get me wrong! I enjoy hearing music in beautiful, glorious stereo if it is mixed that way; music with true separation of instruments or voices. In fact, if some of the early rock classics exist in true, honest to goodness stereo, this is the way I prefer to hear them. Obviously, (and with the exception of their first album) The Kinks' music (at least through the better part of 1966) either was not recorded on equipment technologically conducive to creating a decent stereo mix-down tape, or Talmy's production methods were such that a stereo mix would have been unlistenable. Much of "Face to Face" lends creedence to this possibility. At any rate, if the recording methods employed make it impossible to create a decent stereo mix-down, or if a stereo mix-down doesn't exist, then a company is better off to leave well enough alone and release it in it's original state...MONO. With the exception of the now defunct Mobile Fidelity, and possibly a few others, this did indeed become the trend in the '80's and has continued right down to today.
So, in summing up, this disc contains two albums, "Kinks," and "Kinda Kinks." For the bulk of the first album, "Kinks," they used either Talmy's original Pye mix-down tapes or the stereo versions sent to Reprise. Being that they used the nasty, nasty rechanneled version of "You Really Got Me" that was probably created by Reprise, I tend to opt for the latter.
As for "Kinda Kinks," this album has always sounded bad! A real shame too, as the songs and performances (except for Avory hitting the rim of his snare drum quite by accident immediately after Ray sings the line "People say," on "You Shouldn't Be Sad") are fantastic! So, it's hard to say what source material they used.
One thing is certain, as far as sound quality is concerned, any versions of these albums currently available equal or surpass this disc. Save your money! Avoid this release!!!
One more final note: The mono release of "Kinks" is superior to the stereo version, due simply to the fact that the only stereo here is perhaps a harmonica or vocal in one channel, with maybe a tambourine or handclaps in the other. The stereo version isn't worth killing to hear.

5 out of 5 stars Kudos for the stereo 1st album; shame for the mono 2nd.......2002-03-28

Right-O, the first album is "original master recording" I believe from Mobile Fidelity (now out of the busines I believe).
The sound on this CD is absolutely tremendous. But beware, only the material from the 1st LP is in stereo. 'Kinda Kinks' is monophonic, and thus lacks alot in terms of the zest we find on the first.

I'm a bit of an audiophile and I'm always looking for the best sounding remastered classics. I'm a huge Kinks fan and didn't know about these Japaneese re-issues until recently. Unfortunately they're a [...]. and a half to find! But if you do find one, and you ARE a Kinks fan, GRAB IT! The sound quality is superb on these (as if a Japaneese remaster is gonna sound bad). However the early albums are still in mono...the one not to miss is the stereo version of "Something Else." But for this one, "Kinda Kinks" has never sounded better. The Japaneese know how to remaster things to make them sound "warm" again.
