Released in the wake of Holland, one of the Beach Boys' last creative triumphs, this 1973 set captures a band feverishly trying to reconcile its past, present, and future--no mean feat considering Brian Wilson had long since retreated into seclusion due to overwhelming personal problems and friction with his bandmates. Aside from the Ramones-like energy of their teenybopping early '60s prime, this is arguably the band's performing peak. Supplemented by Holland sidemen Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar (who would later add the Rutles to his strange résumé), the band offers up several strong versions of then-recent material ("Sail On Sailor," "Trader," "Darlin'," "Marcella"), a few key Pet Sounds cuts, and a few surprises (a bluesy "Leaving This Town," the haunting Wild Honey track "Let the Wind Blow") in this collection's first half, then largely turns matters over to Mike Love for an energetic run-through--and disturbing preview--of their long-running oldies revue. Also included are new liner notes by longtime Wilson biographer Timothy White. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars 1972-1973. A TRULY WONDERFUL LIVE BEACH BOYS RECORDING.........................2007-02-22

A nice Capital reissue of "The Beach Boys In Concert, excellent linear notes, a nice sounding remastered edition. Like other reviews have stated, if you own one Beach Boys Live recording let it be "The Beach Boys In Concert". I'm not crazy about live concert recordings but "The Beach Boys In Concert" has some shining moments even without Brian Wilson present. Original Beach Boy members, Mike Luv, Alan Jardine, Carl and Dennis Wilson prove that even without Brian they have talent as live performers. Carl even performs some cuts from the famed "Carl And The Passions" lp. The Beach Boys were really at a very creative chapter in their careers. Brian Wilson did contribute to all Beach Boy releases during this era of their careers, he was still batteling inner demons as he did not tour with the band during this time in 1972-1973. This concert is the best Beach Boys live performance to own. My only negative was the version of "Help Me Rhonda". Otherwise this is a must own for Beach Boys fans. A truly enjoyable listen that actually kept my interest for a live recorded concert.

3 out of 5 stars wot no Denny?.......2006-03-30

The unquestionable highlight of The Beach Boys during this period of their career was Dennis Wilson...he wasn't stuck behind the drums, after injuring his hand, so co-fronted the group, and played electric piano/synth. I've heard a live recording of his song 'cuddle up', complete with strings AND a spoken word intro from Mike Love chastising the audience for talking over a quiet track and preventing them from artistic growth! Amazing stuff...which makes it all the more inexcplicable that there is NO vocal solo or song written by Denny here...not even as a bonus track.

It's a good album, don't get me wrong, just a total missed opportunity, given the key position Dennis occupied at this point in their career, both on record (best songwriter, hands down on their previous four lps) and live...

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2006-01-21

I saw them on the tour during which they recorded this album. I had never been as much of a fan of theirs as, say the Beatles, Stones, Byrds, etc.... But I had bought Surf's Up and Holland on the strength of some decent reviews in Rolling Stone and other magazines. So, I decided to catch this concert. Man, was I glad. They had added some guys from Holland and had some new material as well as their standards. I was as impressed by how they would trade instruments almost as much as the quality of the show. Man, could these guys tear it up when they wanted to. "Fun, Fun, Fun" just plain tore the house down.

So, I bought the album (yes, an LP) when it came out and ripped it to cd a few years ago. Still listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars If you only buy 1 Beach Boys live CD, this is the one.......2005-03-23

There are several options to get the Beach Boys live (without bootlegs, that is): the twofer release of "In Concert/Live in London", this CD, and "Good Timin'" (a 1979 English show). For sheer excellent song selection and performance, this is far and away the best of the three.

The songs get extra energy from the band performing as close to rock and roll as the band got and they feature some of their best material (rather than strictly "sun and fun" numbers). It's hard to realize now but there was a time when a Beach Boys concert meant you might actually hear some NEW material from them. With the extra oomph, even their weaker material ("Funky Pretty", "Marcella") sounds passable.

Of the 20 songs here, only 5 come from before "Pet Sounds". No 'oldies jukebox' here...this was a band that realized they were still MAKING great music...and they actually bothered to perform it.

HIGHLIGHTS:
"Leaving this Town" is especially vibey live...with a great keyboard solo and impassioned Blondie Chaplin vocal. They absolutely TEAR into "Heroes and Villains" (listen for Dennis to use the rare "Bicycle rider.." section in the lyric...). A delicate "Caroline,No" is transcendent. "Let the Wind Blow" here leaves some of the harmonies out, making it more R&B than the album version. It underscores the desperation of the lyric. It especially kicks in at the "Let the bees make honey.." section. "Good Vibrations" cooks as what must have been the concert closer.

LOWS:
Nothing really outright "bad" here, though "Marcella" and "Funky Pretty" are lesser tunes. They sound as good as they ever have here in a live setting. "Fun, Fun, Fun" doesn't sound bad but it's a letdown as the encore after a frenetic "Good Vibrations".

BOTTOM LINE:
Great song selection, the guys are tight, they sound like they want to be there. If you're getting live Beach Boys, get this one.

4 out of 5 stars Best Beach Boys live album.......2005-03-07

Without a doubt the best of the Beach Boys live albums-- taken from tours for Holland, this is from the last tour before emphasis on older material began. In fact, of the 20 cuts on this disc, only six date from before Pet Sounds. The band includes Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar, musicians from South Africa who joined the Beach Boys on their previous two studio albums.

It is in fact Blondie who is first heard, with his great lead vocal on "Sail On, Sailor". The set continues through later Beach Boys material and a few "Pet Sounds" songs-- of particular note are a great take on "You Still Believe in Me", powerful readings of "Heroes and Villains" and "Funky Pretty" (the latter again featuring a stellar vocal by Blondie), and a totally moving take on "Let the Wind Blow" (with a stunning lead by Carl). Also of note is "We Got Love", recorded for "Holland" but not released. The only complaint is there's no Dennis songs on here, but its a small complaint, given how powerful the album is.

Overall, a great set, and well worth having.

Like virtually every band in the mid-'60s, the Beach Boys were expected to deliver their hits in person--no mean feat considering the ever more baroque concoctions that Brian Wilson was constructing in the studio. Tellingly, at the time the 1964 Concert was recorded in Beach Boys hotbed Sacramento, the band had but a few hits of their own and so they padded their set with Jan and Dean's "Little Old Lady from Pasadena" (cowritten by Brian), Dion's "The Wanderer," "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" by the Rivingtons, Bobby Pickett's "The Monster Mash," and, of course, Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." The instrumental backing here is sparse and simplistic; it's the band's vocal interplay that carries the day before a throng of screaming fans. By the time the year was out, Brian suffered his first nervous breakdown and gave up touring to concentrate on his studio productions.

Live in London was culled from live shows recorded at a time (1968) when the band were virtual pop-cultural outcasts in their home country, but still enjoyed an enthusiastic following in England. These recordings document the Beach Boys' remarkable resilience in the face of Brian's deliberate distancing and their frigid American career prospects; when the going got tough, the tough got spectacularly professional. Augmented by a horn section, the band locks into a powerful groove, giving energetic, largely note-perfect versions of the expected hits along with some key album cuts. Digitally remastered, this long out-of-print twofer edition features commentary by David Leaf (The Beach Boys and the California Myth), as well as two bonus cuts: a 1964 concert rendition of "Don't Worry Baby" and a 1967 live version (from the unreleased Lei'd in Hawaii album) of the challenging "Heroes and Villains" that features a rare appearance by Brian Wilson performing with the band. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Beach Boys Live/re-master.......2007-07-02

I first heard this recording on vinyl years ago, it absolutely blew me away. The layers of sound that a live concert has is special and amazing. I thought that the original master had a richness and it could have only been beat by actually attending a real concert. I bought this CD assuming with all of the wonderful technology we have now that it would be a superior recording. Boy, was I suprised! With this new re-master they modified and compressed it to a point that it just seems like one big jumble of sound with non-stop screaming girls. The other recording had the girls too, but all through the concert you could hear vocals when you were supposed to hear vocals, & instruments when you were supposed to hear instruments. I would probably look for a CD that was an earlier re-master or if you have a pristine vinyl & a UBS turntable, you could transfer it directly to your computer harddrive. But, if all that isn't possible go ahead and get it because it it is still a great concert no matter what.

4 out of 5 stars BEACH BOYS. "CONCERT/ LIVE IN LONDON", A MUST HAVE HISTORICAL BEACH BOYS RETROSPECTIVE............. .......2007-02-21

I enjoyed this cd even though I'm not a big fan of live recordings. The reason I bought this "Beach Boys Concert" was to hear the Beach Boys young vibrant falsetto voices. This live set is not great even though versions of Beach Boys hits are performed well live. The Beach Boys Concert is interesting because it is during the start of Beatlemania 1964. It was nice knowing that not only The Beatles had screaming fans but the Beach Boys did to as you listen to "Concert". With all the screaming the performance still comes out well. "Live In London" is an interesting listen because I think as the Beach Boys perform tracks from "Wild Honey" these live performances of "Wild Honey" sound better than the original lp did. "London" also gives you a perspective of how crazy England was for The Beach Boys at this time of Beatle dominance in 1968. The Beach Boys "Concert/Live in London" is a must have just to hear the young Beach Boys young falsetto voices live. The Beach Boys "Concert/Live in London" is a must own due to its historical place in rock music history...............

3 out of 5 stars Ladies and gentlemen, my pleasure to introduce to you, the stars of the show, here tonight with beautiful sounds, the Beach Boys.......2006-09-03

This CD features two live albums by the Beach Boys.

Beach Boys Concert was recorded in 1964 in Sacramento. It features the Beach Boys original lineup of Brian, Carl, Dennis, Mike and Al. Brian stopped going out on tour shortly after this. The group sounds good, if a bit sloppy at times, and the audience is frequently too loud. The songs consist of five Beach Boys originals, and eight cover versions of other people's songs. There are a few odd song choices, including "Long Tall Texan" and "Monster Mash", of all things.

Live in London was recorded in 1968. At this time, the touring group was backed up by several other musicians, including a horn section. This gave their live performances a "fuller" sound, and allowed them to play the songs closer to how they sounded on their records. Unlike their first concert album, this one doesn't feature any songs that they hadn't previously recorded.

There are two bonus tracks on the CD. "Don't Worry Baby" is an outtake from the show that was recorded for their first concert album. "Heroes and Villains" is from the unreleased live album called Lei'd in Hawaii.

This CD gives you an idea how the Beach Boys sounded during two different time periods. They sounded good, but not as good as they did in the recording studio.

4 out of 5 stars Concert 3 stars, Live in London 5 stars.......2005-12-28

Concert is an early Beach Boys concert, the big thing is that you get to hear the band with Brian Wilson. But the set selections are quite weak, few Beach Boys originals and lots of insipid covers, even an instrumental. Its more of archival and historic importance. Live in London, although without Brian, is really outstanding. Unlike other great 60's band, the Beach Boys never stopped touring, and it shows in this recording. By 1967-68, when this record was recorded, the Beach boys were a mean live Rock n Roll well oiled machine. One of the best live band of the time, no question about it. All the vocals are spot on, and Mile Love is great as a ringmaster. The vocals on Darlin by Carl Wilson are nothing short of extraordinare. Live in London may be one of the best live recordings of the sixties.

4 out of 5 stars I liked it a lot better when I was 10.......2002-01-02

Back in the day, before I reached puberty, I used to listen to Live In London all the time. This was a GREAT album. Wake the World, Do it Again, but especially Aren't You Glad (my favorite song on the album) were all great songs. Same with Darlin' and Wouldn't it be Nice.

I listen to it today, and it sounds a bit loungy. A little bit corny. For a time, I thought this was the only live album that sounded better than studio recordings. I still feel that way with Aren't You Glad (only because it's too feminine coming out of the studio) and Wake the World (same reason), but the rest of the album just didn't impress me as a concert the Beach Boys really worked hard through.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A KEEPER...!.......2001-01-02

Having had the Beach Boys Live in London album in the early nineteen seventies and loved it, I was delighted to see it available on CD and bought it to replace my now obsolete vinyl. The plus is that the CD includes the tracks from the Beach Boys first album to go number one, Beach Boys Concert(1964). The CD also two bonus tracks and a comprehensive liner.

This is a great CD. Listening to it makes one understand why the Beach Boys remain one of the most popular American groups of all time. It also contains my favorite song by them..."Darlin'" which I believe to be one of the best songs written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love.

Not all of the songs on this CD were written by the Beach Boys, but that does not detract from the quality. On the contrary, it is great to hear the Beach Boys with their signature sound, interpreting such classics as the Freshmen's "Graduation Day" and Dion's "The Wanderer."

If you could only have one Beach Boys CD, this would be it!

4 out of 5 stars Back-to-back documents of the Beach Boys' live sound.......2000-08-14

Though this isn't essential to those who just want to get an earful of the Beach Boys, it is more than a collector's-only buy. This CD teams up two previously released live Beach Boys LP's, featuring a 1964 show in Sacramento, CA and a few 1968 shows from London. It was originally available as a domestic release, but has since been cut out by Capitol USA. Rumor has it that it will be reissued in the States, but for now it's available only as an import.

Of the 13 tracks on "Concert," only 5 are Beach Boys originals ("Fun, Fun, Fun" "Little Deuce Coupe" "In My Room" "Hawaii" and "I Get Around"). The other 8 are a combination of hits of the day ("The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" "Monster Mash" etc.), a surf tune ("Let's Go Trippin'") and classics such as "Papa Oom Mow Mow" (with a great lead vocal from Brian) "Johnny B. Goode" and the Four Freshman's "Graduation Day."

The vocal harmonies are classic Beach Boys, showing they could actually sing outside of the studio ("Graduation Day", in particular, is really quite stunning in its harmonies). Musially the Beach Boys were a surprisingly good dance band, circa 1964. "Let's Go Trippin'" surely had the audience in the aisles doing the Surfer Stomp. The sound quality is quite good, considering what sort of equipment was available for field recording in 1964. The vocals aren't quite as present as one would like, but there is some bottom end and you can actually hear Brian's bass.

"Live in London" was recorded in 1968, released overseas in 1970, and finally released in the USA (and then as "Beach Boys '69") in 1975. By the time this was recorded Brian was long off the road, and Bruce Johnston was traveling in his place. They were also employing a horn section for their road show by this point.

This set concentrates on the Beach Boys' music from the mid-to-late 60's. All but one track ("Sloop John B") are originals. Three cuts are from the Pet Sounds LP ("Wouldn't it Be Nice" with Al and Mike handling Brian's vocal, "Sloop John B" and "God Only Knows" with a great live vocal from Carl), a few earlier tracks ("California Girls" "Barbara Ann"), a bunch of later classics ("Do it Again" "Bluebirds Over the Mountain" "Good Vibrations"), and several lesser known Beach Boys nuggets.

As befits the late 60's timeframe, this show is a bit more laidback than the Beatlemaniac screaming audience atmosphere of "Concert", though the audience is quite enthusiastic, and the performance is very energetic. Mike Love has quite firmly taken control of the live show, and spends a good deal of time telling, uh, jokes, between songs. Carl's vocals are quite strong by this point, and Dennis Wilson's drumming (if it's him playing) has gotten quite passable. The acapella version of the Four Freshman's "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" is chilling.

Each spin of this disc proves it to be less of a novelty and more of a bona fide document of a great American rock band on the road.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Live Collection for any band to emulate.......2000-04-20

This two-fer is really a must, whether one is a casual fan (for which many hits are performed) or a die-hard devotee. I purchased the Live In London (aka London '69) album when I was in Jr. High (at its first release), and am still very impressed by how talented the Beach Boys were as a touring act in the late 60s. The first half of the two-fer is the 1964 Concert (aka Wow, Great Concert) album. Although mixed badly, with too many surges and bad edits, this is a "sonic document" showing the sex appeal and humour of the Beach Boys onstage shortly before the addition of Bruce Johnston. The crowd sounds like it's from Liverpool, but the band is all tight harmonies and musicianship from Hawthorne.

5 out of 5 stars Great concert!.......2005-04-26

Back in the sixties and seventies a record label called Pickwick had ownership of Capitol Records recordings. The minor label released a handful of albums containing previously released recordings by the Beach Boys and other artists who recorded on Capitol. One of the Pickwick albums was entitled WOW! GREAT CONCERT. Nine songs from this live performance were used for that set. They are FUN FUN FUN,LITTLE DEUCE COUPE,LONG TALL TEXAN,IN MY ROOM,THE MONSTER MASH(a Halloween favorite),PA PA MOW MOW,THE LITTLE OLD LADY FROM PASADENA(made famous by Jan & Dean),GRADUATION DAY and I GET AROUND. The other four songs are totally awesome. Hey,this was 1963 or '64 when Beach Boymania was spreading like wildfire all over America just like Beatlemania but in England before America. The Beach Boys were worshipped by young British girls as well just like the Beatles. Also in those years, both bands were gracing covers of 16 magazine.

3 out of 5 stars Live and let live.......2005-02-07

This Beach Boys concert album was recorded at various venues during their Winter 1972 Tour and their Summer 1973 Tour. This was during the brief time period that Bruce Johnston had quit the band, and was replaced by South African musicians Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar. The performances here are good, but none of them match the studio versions of these songs. On the plus side, this was before the Beach Boys became a nostalgia act that just played their biggest hits. So, we are treated to some rare live versions of lesser known songs like "Sail On Sailor", "Trader", "You Still Believe in Me" and "Funky Pretty". I wouldn't say this is an essential Beach Boys CD, but it should be of interest to most of their fans.

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars A good start but..........2006-02-01

As other reviewers have mentioned, this isn't quite complete. All of the grand marches, dirges, and (understandably as this was recorded in the 1950s) unavailable-at-the-time marches are missing. Some non-marches have been substituted, confusing the issue. However, this is the largest and most readily available compilation that goes beyond the "greatest hits" sets that so permeate the CD bins. (There IS a truly complete set, but it's only available in Japan, and for whatever reason, it's not being mass-imported to the States at the moment. Go figure.)
For now, I would recommend this to someone who has not purchased a lot of other Sousa CDs so as to avoid the inevitable overlap. You won't have everything, but there's a lot to enjoy here.

5 out of 5 stars another march is missing.......2003-08-03

        Hi
This album also lacks The Honored Dead

4 out of 5 stars Close, but not QUITE complete.......2002-10-16

A very nice collection, with crisp performances. It is, however, not complete. There is at least one march, The Wedding March," missing, and it is one that is VERY hard to find. Perhaps the set should be called "The Almost, But Not Quite Complete, Sort Of, Marches....."
