Rod Stewart's career has been subject to so many twists that a single-disc overview is somehow both appealingly broad and inadequate to the task of tracing all those zigzags. From beloved rocker of the first order to disco dilettante to pop crooner, Stewart's career has presented challenges to fans who may have been charmed by the rollickingly randy "Maggie May" and bemused by the alarmingly narcissistic "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" This 16-song retrospective touches all the bases without delving deeply into any era. The selections aren't arranged sequentially and the booklet is much more generous with vintage photos than album credits. This best-of collection is clearly aimed at the casual fan, but no album that presents Rod the Mod gems "Downtown Train," "You Wear It Well," and "Reason to Believe" one after another is a throwaway. --Steven Stolder

This is a great cd. The music is quality Rod Stewart at his best. I have enjoyed it very much!! A great buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Even Better Than Volume One.......2005-03-06

Anyone knows that one disc can't possibly hold all of Rod Stewart's best songs, so naturally a second volume will have to be made. "Encore: The Very Best Of - Vol. 2" adds 18 Stewart classics not found on 2001's "The Very Best Of Rod Stewart". This disc has some great stuff on it, and is actually slightly better than the first volume.

"Encore" features pretty much every significant hit not featured on the first volume, from the soulful "The Motown Song" to the turbo charged rocker "Lost In You" to the new wave synth pop chugger "Baby Jane" to the somber " I Was Only Joking", you will find that you will love every song on this cd (even the much criticized "Love Touch" (which is one of my all time favorites). This set is also notable for inckuding Rod's popular on radio but otherwise hard to find cover of Carole King's "So Far Away" and "Don't Come Around Here" from 2001's "Human". Plus, anyone who's only familliar with Sheryl Crow's version of "The First Cut Is The Deepest" should really listen to Rod's version. It's truly better.

An added bonus to this disc is a booklet with commentary on each track and how it came into being, given to to you by none other than Rod. A great collection of Rod's music. Get this one as well as volume one.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Volume 1 or that Greatest Hits! .......2005-01-10

I liked that he put out a second album of his greatest hits on Warner Bros. And clever since he's finishing out his contract with them because he's on J now. But this album has songs he left out on the first one. I like that Crazy About Her is on here, for I played that the most from Out of Order! Very big sound on it! Infatuation I still love. And Passion is another solid song on here. There are some bluesy numbers, some soul-driven numbers and rockers here too. I loved his version of That's What Friends are For, even if Dionne Warwick's version was a big hit in late '85. It's kind of mixed up, not in chronological order, but the songs blend well. Stewart may be on this standards thing now, but pop/rock is what he can do the best and he should go back to it for his next album. This album just demonstrates his many talents as a singer and artist.

5 out of 5 stars More Classics From Rock's Spanner In The Works.......2004-11-02

Rod Stewart is a singer whose appeal has probably outlasted anyone in rock and roll with the exception the Beatles, the Stones and Elvis. He is adored by millions young and old. He has been named a perosnal favorite singer by every singer, from Elton John to Lindsay Lohan. Plus, he had an incredible run of hits between 1971 and 1998: 35 top 40 singles, 14 top 10 hits, 3 number one records (including one that was on top for 8 weeks). "Voice - The Very Best Of Rod Stewart" featured 16 of those hits. It had all his most memorable work on just one disc. It was excellent, but there was something missing. That missing void was filled with "Encore: Very Best Of 2".

This cd includes most of those remaining hits, including "Love Touch" (don't tell me anything bad about this song, because I love it), "Crazy About Her", "Passion", and the uplifting "The Motown Song". Also included is a vast number of underrated songs like "Broken Arrow", his original version "That's What Friends Are For" (not as good as Dionne Warwick's version, but it's still good), "I Don't Want To Talk About It", and "I Was Only Joking". Fans may miss "Handbags And Gladrags" and "The Killing Of Georgie Pts. 1 and 2", but that's a matter of opinion.

Get this and "Voice", and you're well on your way to owning all of Rod Stewart's best cds. Also pick up "Gasoline Alley", "Every Picture Tells A Story", "Out Of Order" and "Vagabond Heart", all great albums. Oh yeah, and the 3 "Great American Songbook" cds. They show how versatile the Rodmeister really is.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Rod's career.......2005-05-21

Double disc set of 34 tracks, digitally remastered. Disc One is titled "A Night Out" and contains uptempo and Rock tracks such as "Maggie May" (complete version), "Rhythm of My Heart", the Faces' classic "Stay With Me", and the playful raunch of "Hot Legs" & "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy".

Disc Two - "A Night In" - focuses on Rod the balladeer with his haunting versions of other peoples' songs: "Sailing" (Gavin Sutherland), "Have I Told You Lately" (Van Morrison), "I Don't Want To Talk About It" (Danny Whitten - Crazy Horse); plus his own compositions such as "The Killing of Georgie Pts 1 & 2" and "You're In my Heart (The Final Acclaim)". Best of all is the hard-to-get Python Lee Jackson classic "In a Broken Dream".

Well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars A near perfect collection.......2002-06-29

The CD is the absolute best collection of Rod Stewart's hits out there. The only reason this missed a 5 star rating is due to the ommission of five songs: Passion, Infatuation, People Get Ready, Forever Young and My Heart Can't Tell You No. However, all five of these songs can be found on Downtrain Train: Selections From The Storyteller Anthology.

4 out of 5 stars I see why people RAVE over early Stewart material! .......2005-12-27

I decided to pick this up on remastered CD and I have to admit, this collection of early Rod Stewart material is simply rocking. I finally see what people are talking about when they RAVE about Rod's early material and how it reaches and touches them inside. So much soul and rock this guy has inside of him I just don't see any current artist doing this depth of work today. The track, "Oh No not My Baby" is worthy of buying this album alone.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Rod!.......2004-03-20

This is actually a good representation of some good Rod Stewart! All the songs on here are classic Rod Stewart, well except for 'Pinball Wizard' but that is also because I hate that song so what are you gonna do? From the classic among classics 'Maggie May' to the amazing ballad 'Mine For Me'

The best part about this collection is that for once they actually included Rods best song "Gasoline Alley' I mean that is one ofthe best songs ever recorded and for some reason it gets left off of all of Rods collections and thats just wrong.

If you want a good introduction into one of the greatest artists in rock and roll history from when he was actually good then this is the best thing for you to pick up next to the amazing album Gasoline Alley!

5 out of 5 stars WHEN ROD WAS A ROCK N ROLLER.......2003-05-16

These are prime cuts from the days when Rod was carrying rock's flame high. His gravely voice was unique then (it was long before Tom Waits) and Maggie May was one of the most superb rock songs in 1971. Losing You is a brilliant blend of rockin' funk, Milwaukee is a classic lament when the emotion was still real and Every Picture Tells A Story remains quite a tour de force. His version of Pinball Wizard is packed with power and You Wear It Well has stood the test of time very well. This is great value but to get all of Rod's best, one must invest in Best Of Volume 2 as well, for more masterpieces from those early days like Mandolin Wind and Reason To Believe.

5 out of 5 stars good old collection.......2002-11-14

Its a great collection of songs and is great for someone that likes rod stewart.

4 out of 5 stars The Rod The Critics Praise.......2002-06-14

This review is for both volumes of this release..
Well, if you want more than a taste of the classic Mercury years, and you don't want to shell out the cash for all five efforts, this is the only way to go. All the U.S. hits from this period are here; "Maggie May", "You Wear It Well", "(I Know)I'm Losing You", "Handbags And Gladrags", "Twisting The Night Away, "Reason To Believe", and more.. There's also plenty of classic album tracks; "Every Picture Tells A Story", "Gasoline Alley", and "Mandolin Wind", just to name a few..
The label certainly didn't shortchange us on the number of tracks, it's amazing just how many obsucrities made their way on here, and for the most part, songs like "Lady Day", "Man Of Constant Sorrow", "What's Made Milwaukee Famous", and "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down" are welcome additions, but some tracks, especially from "Smiler", most notably "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Man" stick out like a soar thumb.. In their places, why not the Dylan cover "Only A Hobo" or the U.K. top ten hit "Farewell"?
All in all, great compilation of the early years, extremely comprehensive, all the necessary stuff, and then some..

4 out of 5 stars Some of Beck's Finest Recordings!.......2005-06-04

This compilation contains the best tracks from the first two Jeff Beck Group albums from 1968 and 1969. Moreover there are some great singles only tracks from the same period.

Beck's first album "Truth" is possibly his greatest and most consistent release. 7 of the tracks come from that album. "Beck's Bolero" is in all but name the Yardbirds, in the same line-up that did "Happening 10 Years Time Ago" and the "Blow Up" performance. Beck's version of Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me" sounds a lot like early Led Zeppelin; even Rod Stewart sounds like Robert Plant. Other highlights from that album is the re-recording of "Shapes of Things", which has been slowed down a little making it an ever greater song.

Their second album "Beck Ola" is represented by 5 tracks. The album is not nearly as strong as "Truth" - the material weaker, some songs go on for too long and Stewart's vocals can be a little overstrung at times. Best track from that album is "Plynth".

Among the single tracks "Tallyman" is a great mod/pop-art piece sounding like Creation or the Who. Written by Graham Gouldman. Another hit-single was "Hi Ho Silver Lining" - a commercial song featuring a very unorthodox guitar-solo from Beck. Sounding quite a lot like the Yardbirds.

The CD is very recommendable for fans of the Yardbirds - though the re-release of "Truth" with bonus-tracks may be an even more satisfying investment.

4 out of 5 stars It Rocks My Plimsoul For Sure.......2002-07-04

Super compilation featuring some awesome Jeff Beck guitar licks. The man displays great power and creative touches on his guitar. Sometimes loud and sometimes soft but always good.

And of course there are some awesome contributions by Rod Stewart, Mick Waller, Ron Wood, and Nicky Hopkins. The version of Jailhouse Rock is just mind blowing. What lightning fast fingers on the keyboards by Mr. Hopkins. I've Been Drinking is another highlight with some excellent vocals by Rod set to a nice gospel backing. The guitar solo just sends shivers down my spine. Rock My Plimsoul has a great tone and Love Is Blue features some nice color on the guitar tones.

This is a near five star compilation. A few tracks are a bit overdone most notably All Shook Up is totally unrecognizable from the original. Its done too heavy handed. Spanish Boots also suffers a similar fate and Rice Pudding goes on a bit too long. However, out of sixteen tracks about ten or twelve are clearly Grade A.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2000-12-31

This CD was excellent. It covered Jeff's work in this era more so than Beckology did. What Beckology didnt have, this did. Great best of CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Gemm!.......2000-03-23

Gemm! Nice compilation of the *best* Jeff Beck group. If you are rock & blues guitar fan you must own this CD.

Before he threw his talent away in the mid-1970s, Rod Stewart was a rock star to be reckoned with. His sandpaper and whiskey throated vocals were the perfect vehicle for the blues-rock sound he pursued in the '60s with various bands, including the Jeff Beck Group. On his own, Stewart came up with something even more potent, mixing electric instruments with mandolins, acoustic guitars, and fiddles on songs such as "Maggie May," "You Wear It Well," and his gorgeous reading of Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe." This collection is limited to Stewart's brief time at Mercury Records in the early '70s, but that's fine, since that period saw the release of his best albums overall: The Rod Stewart Album, Gasoline Alley, Every Picture Tells a Story, and Never a Dull Moment. His biggest smashes from that time are here along with lower-charting but equally fine fare such as "Twistin' the Night Away," "Country Comforts," and "It's All Over Now." --Daniel Durchholz

Wish their was more information about the music on this cd as I already have a large Rod Stewart Collection. This was a repeat in music for me. Would recommend to others. Good vendor.

5 out of 5 stars NOT ESSENTIAL, BUT GOOD ENOUGH.......2005-05-23

If you're a die-hard Rod fan, you'll want to purchase his box sets, or even better, every single album he put out. If you're just the casual listener interested in hearing Rod before he changed his musical style, this CD is definitely a great purchase. Every well-known (or noteworthy) song he did during the Mercury-era is here, and they are all pure listening enjoyment. Rod's husky vocals, the awesome electric guitars, and the gorgeous fiddles and mandolins make each song--fast or slow--classics in their own unique right.

3 out of 5 stars An Adequate Comp. From His Good Years........2005-02-02

There are no Faces tracks on this CD because the Faces were on a different label. There is nothing after Rod's Mercury years because MCA does not own the rights to any of the other stuff. Given that, this is an okay selection of music from when Rod was ripping off Ronnie Lane, one of his band-mates in The Faces. Surely this is some of the only Rod Stewart music that doesn't make me want to throw my stereo at his face. There are better collections of Rod's "Stuff that doesn't make J. want to throw his stereo at my face" era tho'.

5 out of 5 stars The best cuts from the best era.......2005-01-18

This music is Stewart's classic material from the early and mid 70's...when rock and blues were mixed with his terrific voice. I would also recommend Atlantic Crossing, although none of it's music is included in this collection. Later collections (through the late-70's and 80's) are really inferior to what we have on this CD.

2 out of 5 stars Great artist, typical 20th Century Masters crap compilation.......2004-11-29

Twentieth Century Masters Millennium Collection: The Best Of Rod Stewart (1999.)

In the late twentieth/early twenty-first century, a number of artists had compilations released in the mid-priced Twentieth Century Masters collection. This series spanned a variety of genres and artists, giving many of them one more hits compilations. Among the artists highlighted in the set is the legendary Rod Stewart. Read on for my review of his Millennium Collection CD.

    PROS:
-COVERS THE BIG HITS FROM THE MERCURY DAYS. This is when Rod began to peak as a solo artist, and it really shows. It's not surprising these songs got so popular - they rule!
-PLENTY OF UNDERRATED TUNES. Some of Rod's best stuff is the stuff you don't hear very often. Many of those underrated tunes found their way onto this compilation, and rightfully so.
-LOW PRICE. Like other CDs in this collection, this one is usually priced very low, making it a good buy if you're on a budget, or you're just too cheap to buy a better collection.

    CONS:
-DOESN'T FILL THE EIGHTY MINUTES YOU CAN FIT ON A CD. This is inexcusable, and every other CD in this collection has the same flaw. There's reason enough to get an authentic compilation rather than this piece of garbage.
-NO (SMALL) FACES SONGS!? WTF!? The (Small) Faces era was the best era of Rod's career, and yet they didn't put a single track on here? Kind of boggles the mind. The omission of the smash hit Stay With Me (from the Faces days) is one of this compilation's ruining factors.
-FOCUSES ON THE MERCURY ALBUMS AND NOT MUCH ELSE. The time period covered here is way too limited. Because of this, the set lacks anything from the (Small) Faces, and anything beyond the Mercury years, so you don't get the huge hit You're In My Heart, nor do you get any songs from Rod's new Great American Songbook CD series.

    OVERALL:
Rod Stewart is a GREAT musician. But this whole collection of CDs is pure garbage. Get a REAL Rod Stewart collection, because the compilations in the Twentieth Century Masters Collection aren't worth the price of the CDs they're burned onto.

3 out of 5 stars about one disc's worth of good stuff.......2006-01-05

It was a great idea putting Rod's early solo stuff alongside Faces on a 2-disc anthology... they just didn't do a very good job selecting the songs. You'd be better off with one of Rod's myriad Mercury compilations and Rhino's terrific _Best of Faces_.

And if the "top 500" reviewer below was as smart as his rating, he'd have realized that most of the bum cuts on here are Rod solo, sans Faces (mainly from the slightly overrated _Never a Dull Moment_ and the god-awful _Smiler_).

3 out of 5 stars Good-time band seek funding for binges and palimony.......2005-08-07

I had forgotten why I never bought any Faces albums when they first came out. The recent death of John Peel gave us repeated opportunities to catch that 'Top of the Pops performance' where he mimed on mandolin to a Faces song. As I saw Rod and Ron playing footy on the TotP stage, the reason came back to me: they were party animals, and I was a prog-rocker.

OK, Rod Stewart wrote some classic songs -- notoriously keeping the best for his solo albums -- but I got the frequent impression that the music was not an end in itself for Rod. It was just a vehicle for money, girls, and stardom.

The Faces did yoo many covers -- do we really need a Faces cover of Hendrix's 'Angel'? I think not. A flimsy rendition of the Stones' 'Street Fighting Man' is redeemed only towards the end when a half-decent instrumental breaks through.

But mostly this is about Rod's ego. Goodness knows what the women saw in him. Personally I don't like his voice either. There are six or seven classics on this compilation, but at this import price, I can only give it three stars.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Rod Stewart part 2.......2004-03-20

Along with the best of Rod Stewart part one this is just as important. All the songs are classics here just as in part one. From 'Man Of Constant Sorrow' all the way up to 'Twistin The Night Away'

If you are even semi interested in Rod Stewart you need this along with part one and you will be able to appreciate the masterful work of one of rocks greatest acts.

5 out of 5 stars MORE GREAT ROD ROCK.......2003-05-16

Volume 2 contains more great rock tracks from the early Rod Stewart, including his interpretations of folk classics like Man Of Constant Sorrow and Reason to Believe plus rock standards like That's Allright. His deep voice was so right for the time, his material was top quality and he sang with conviction. My other favourites include the wistful Tomorrow Is A Long Time and the majestic Mandolin Wind. I'm not crazy about Twistin' The Night Away, Natural Man or Sweet Little Rock 'n Roller but that's no big deal - there's more than enough gold here to satisfy all fans of genuine early 70s rock. But be sure to get Best Of Vol. One too for his other classics from the period such as You Wear It Well, What Made Milwaukee Famous and Maggie May. If Rod had carried on like this, he would have been as big as Elvis now. Nfortunately he chose the MoR route which ensured him success for a time, and then faded. This great collection is a showcase of what was and what could have been - a guaranteed listening pleasure for fans of real rock.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful in certain areas, weak in others.......2002-09-22

I like Stewart's 70's tracks, they are more interesting and emotional than his 1980's work or 90's for that matter. But then again what rock star that started out in the 1960's or 70's did that great in both time periods ? I can only think of a few that made it. This album is still worth listening to and only you can decide if its worth the buy or not.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Rod the Bod.......2001-03-19

This is the Rod that could have been sitting in your living room with an acousitc guitar. If you latched onto Rod after 1980, take a step back and hear what you missed. This is a great "Best Of." Start with #1 and then move to #2. And Rod...Thank You.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Rod II.......1999-10-04

The review in Stereo Review October 1998 (p.90) says it best. Good value and excellent remastering!
