Classic 70's West Coast Horn Band.......2007-06-30
This has been one of my favorite albums since back in the day. I was happy to find it on CD finally. Cold Blood has been somewhat forgotten but they were a find horn band with a kickass singer, very West Coast sound. If Tower of Power had Janis Joplin... you get the idea. I think this is their best album, smooth, good production by Donny Hathaway.
THE JAPANESE RELEASES HAVE BETTER AUDIO MASTERING.......2007-02-15
In 2006, the first five CB titles were issued in Japan in LP-replica mini-sleeve CD format on the Bomba label:
COLD BLOOD - BOMBA BOM24086
SISYPHUS - BOMBA BOM24087
FIRST TASTE OF SIN - BOMBA BOM24088
THRILLER - BOMBA BOM24091
LYDIA - BOMBA BOM24092
The audio mastering on those discs are all superior to their Collectables/domestic counterparts.
If you really love these CB albums, get the Japanese releases before they are sold out, as all mini-sleeve CD's are limited edition.
They are certainly more expensive than the domestic CB titles, but are definitely worth the price.
Link to the Japanese remaster.
First Taste of Sin.......2005-04-11
Superlative! Once again Lydia Pense is at her best. Her individual style continues to blossom on Cold Blood's third album. Despite some personnel changes, The band continues to mature with their rockin' soul stye. This CD is a must for the ardent fan.
Anything Lydia does is great!.......2004-02-23
Ok, besides Lydia there was only two other ladies that could work a horn section with kick ass quality. Yeah one was Janis Joplin and the other was the New York great Genya Ravan with Ten Wheel Drive. Lydia Pense and Cold Blood were one of the premier acts that Uncle Bill Grahm loved to use at the Fillmore. The best of ColdBlood cd is my favorite but if your like me you want all the individual albums on Cd. No Matter what the line up of the band was it was a kickin band, Lydia is still out there with a new version of Cold Blood and do check out her web page because she still sounds as tight as ever.
Great San Francisco Band!.......2004-02-03
A Great Recording. Every cut is precious, good arranging, fabulous vocals.

First Taste of... Cold Blood.......2002-03-19
I have had a copy of Cold Blood's First Taste of Sin since 1976. A family friend gave it to me from a stack of albums that he said his son no longer wanted. I was 15 years old. I have not stopped listening to this album since. Twenty-six years later it remains a "desert island" album for me. It wails! The other reviews here are spot on. Listen to how "Lady Woman" rumbles out of your speakers and "Lo and Behold" works its way into "Down To the Bone". That side alone is enough to wear you out! And as a previous reviewer stated "Valdez in the Country" is music to drive by. For Brass/Rock/Oakland sound fans don't miss First Taste of Sin.
One fine band.......2001-01-31
I began buying Cold Blood albums as soon as I heard "I'm a Good Woman". Rumor in the early 70's was that lead singer, Lydia Pense, trained her voice with Aretha. Don't know if it's true, but she could wail. The previous reviewer is quite correct, the first and second albums were dynamite.
First Taste of Sin.......2000-07-02
These guys are so over the top, outragously great it's unbelievable that they don't (didn't) get more respect. Their first two albums Cold Blood & Sisyphus where even better. As a musician I can testify that the people in Cold Blood are musician's musicians. Buy everything they recorded including vinyl if you have to.
They do play in the Bay area & Northwest. I saw them 2 years ago in Portland at one of the outdoor festivals. THEY WERE EXCELLENT!
Touched By An Angel.......2000-01-03
An angel noticed me bidding for a used vinyl copy of First Taste of Sin on-line and alerted me to the fact that I could buy the CD here.
Thank you! When it arrived, it immediately took it to my car, went for a drive, and put on Valdez In The Country loud! Fantastic! Needless to say, the sound quality far exceeded the 8-track in my '70 El Camino.
I've been a ColdBlood fan for 30 years. First Taste of Sin was my favorite album, and I'm thrilled it's available again. This was one of the hardest working bands of the Fillmore era, and deserved far more notice and acclaim than it received. Anyone who enjoys rock and blues with horns should check out ColdBlood - for the big sound, the tight horn arrangements - and most of all frontwoman Lydia Pense.
Nine excellent cuts here - but what sold me was the instrumental Valdez - somehow left off the great Best Of ColdBlood compilation. Five stars and well worth the import price tag!
A Legendary San Francisco Band.......1999-12-16
First Taste of Sin is arguably the best outing for this overlooked and underappreciated Bay Area powerhouse from the late 60's early 70's. I have experienced this album on vinyl and tape for many years and am thrilled of its release on CD. So appropriate, especially since First Taste... was the best audio recording amongst the six studio albums released between 1969 and 1976, when the original group disbanded.
For those who know ColdBlood there is nothing to say except listen to it again ... for the very first time. And get ready to move those feet. No ticks, no pops, no cueing up the tonearm. Only the deep, rich voice of Lydia, taunting you in My Lady Woman; tempting you with All of My Honey; earnestly pleading her love and devotion to her man in You Had To Know; and, chiding you in Down To The Bone. Lydia demonstrates range and the songs offer differing styles and grooves which alternately highlight the singer and the band.
The charts and Donny Hathaway's unique influence as producer and song contributor (You Had To Know, Valdez In The Country)elevate this recording to a level well beyond its initial popularity. This music is truly timeless.
This recording should not disappoint. It weaves a musical fabric of blue-eyed soul, jazz, gospel and a bit of funk. The ten member group sounds more like a small orchestra on the tunes featuring string arrangements. There are soulful tunes, funky ones and an instrumental all for those who like and appreciate fine brass arrangements. (Thanks to Raul Matute.)
If you listen to Tower of Power, Blood, Seat and Tears, Chicago or even Mavis Staples, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin or contemporary female vocalists and blues artists of the day, try this. But one thing, don't listen to Lydia sing. Go ahead and let yourself feel the music.
And pass it on. This is the real thing. No artificial ingredients here.
P.S. Yes, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood still perform in the northwest on occasion.
