Spanning 22 years, this double-disc, 36-track compilation chronicles the initially unlikely and ultimately triumphant conflation of a failing, veteran English neo-blues band (Mick Fleetwood and the McVies) with a pair of mercurial American also-rans (the baroque folk-rock genius Lindsey Buckingham and crypto-songbird Stevie Nicks). The creative alchemy was immediate, as 15 epochal tracks ("Dreams," "Say You Love Me," "The Chain," "Don't Stop") from Fleetwood Mac and Rumours here attest. They could have arguably repeated that mega-successful formula for a decade, but chose a more musically expansive tack, represented "Sara," Think About Me" and the other core tracks drawn from the ambitious Tusk. While the band's megahit luster faded as the solo careers of Buckingham and Nicks took flight in the '80s, their power was still apparent in the dusky-bright pop of Christine McVie's "Hold Me" and "Little Lies." THIS IS FLEETWOOD MAC'S GREATEST COMPILATION MASTERPIECE EVER!.......2006-12-28

I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece 2-CD set album simply entitled "THE VERY BEST OF" by one of England's and America's greatest combined Rock bands EVER, I'm talking about the great FLEETWOOD MAC! This 2-CD set album was originally released on CD in 2002 on the Reprise Records label that was once owned by old blue eyes himself, the late great Frank Sinatra! Reprise Records is associated with Warner Brothers Records Inc. The matrix or ID number of this album is R2 73775. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible. Please forgive me for making this review a little long but I felt it was the only appropriate way to write this one on Fleetwood Mac!

What can I say about the great legendary Fleetwood Mac that hasn't already been said? I'm confident that you were already aware that Fleetwood Mac were already legendary before the megastar line-up of the beautiful Stevie Nicks, the beautiful Christine McVie, the gracefully talented Lindsay Buckingham and the multi-talented masterminds and founders of Fleetwood Mac, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. Fleetwood Mac would be known worldwide as the band that contained three of Rock's greatest guitarists that would ever play together in one band on the same stage! I'm talking about the great Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer! After all three guitarists along with guitarist Bob Welch departed Fleetwood Mac in the 70's, the band was at a crossroads and McVie, Fleetwood and a young beauty named Christine Perfect (Soon to be McVie) were only left with their name! When Fleetwood and both McVie's traveled to California U.S.A., it would not take very long before Fleetwood Mac Mach II would be born and set the stage and the whole world on fire! The beautiful Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham would be the needed ingredients that would complete the NEW AND IMPROVED FLEETWOOD MAC! It is extremely hard for me to choose one over the other! As you can see, this is definitely a treasure album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable part of his or her personal music collection. This priceless gem will definitely be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!

In closing, Fleetwood Mac are TRUE LEGENDS! I know for fact that we haven't seen or heard the last of Fleetwood Mac yet! This band still has so much to give to the whole world in general! Forgive me for saying this and I do not mean to offend anyone or anybody especially the bandmembers! Listening to all these brilliant well recorded songs gives me the feeling that Nicks and McVie were in DEEP competition with each other, am I wrong? I REALLY HOPE I AM! But when you have two great female singers in the same band, there's bound to be some form of friction between the two! The reason why I am questioning this is because McVie does not appear in the most recent Fleetwood Mac release "SAY YOU WILL" from 2003! I really do hope that I am wrong in making this statement and I would love to see McVie back in the Mac line-up where she so rightly belongs! Here's to you Fleetwood Mac! Keep persevering! The Mac's best compilation, all the Buckingham-era studio albums are all better.......2006-10-25

A two-disc set including all of the band's hits from 1975-1987, as well as some album tracks and lessor-known songs. The packaging is attractive, and the remastering is outstanding. Although I personally feel that the five studio albums from this lineup of the band are superior than any compilation, the set will fit the bill nicely for those who are looking a collection with all of the hits and most of the significant album tracks. This peaked at #12 on the Hot 200 and is as close to a definitive compilation of this era of the band as there is.

FAVORITE ALBUM EVER.......2006-07-22

I adore this collection of Fleetwood Mac's work. Rhiannon is my all time favorite. It is so beautiful. The songs sung by Stevie Nicks are the most beautiful, since her voice is spellbinding.
I reccomend this to every age group! It's fabulous!

The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac.......2006-05-13

This collection of Fleewood Mac far surpasses the original "Greatest Hits" release, and should please fans old and new. It includes all the hits from their first album through 1997's reunion album The Dance.

There are some refreshing new elements incorporated into this CD too single versions for Rhiannon, Over My Head, Think About Me and Sisters of the Moon that were all previously unavailable on CD. There's also a different mix of Silver Springs, emphasizing Stevie Nicks' vocals at the end of the song with Buckingham and McVie's vocals removed.

Deserves to be Remastered.......2007-06-02

The reason Rumours became the best-selling album of 1977 wasn't just because of the songs themselves-as wonderful and deeply personal as they were then and still are, but that five personalities merged with their deepest feelings at an impeccable time to create a whole new person. Also, the dichotomy of this band made for relationship dynamics created on vinyl.

Overpraised background muzak.......2007-02-25

In 1977 I was eight and far too young to appreciate this slice of ubitquitous AOR southern Californian pop-rock. Now, at 38, I should be old enough. Yet this still leaves me cold. It's only a matter of taste, and clearly millions disagree with me, but this music doesn't make me FEEL anything except tedium. There is one exception: Go Your Own Way is undeniably a decent song. And that great bass riff on The Chain DOES still sound great and brings back happy memories of watching Grand Prixs on tv when I was a kid (it was the theme music in the UK).

Otherwise though, to me, this is a bunch of coked-out, self-satisfied musicians coasting on automatic, who fully understand that safe, bland songs like these have the potential to bring in pots of cash. There's nothing remotely ambitious about these songs: they're custom-made for undemanding ears who want some light background entertainment while driving to work or washing the dishes. There's nothing wrong with that in itself - there's a demand for undemanding music and we all want a bit of background diversion from time to time. And that's about all that can be said for it, really.

Fleetwood Mac got the last laugh. They could have churned out these songs in their sleep, yet they made them multi-millionaires. Good for them. Being successful has rarely had much to do with creating interesting music.

Just Eleven Great Songs.......2007-02-04

If anyone thinks that they are too good for Rumours, they are very wrong. Eleven fantastic songs, from the celebratory ("You make Loving Fun") to the plaintive ("Songbird") to the regretful ("Oh Daddy"): oh, and a couple of the greatest driving songs ever written ("The Chain", "Go Your Own Way").

Far greater than the vastly overrated "Hotel California", and indeed the vast majority of song-based albums, "Rumours" is an album that everyone with a pair of working ears should own. That's all I have to say.

The 70's Encapsulated.......2007-01-14

If you listen to this classic, mega-selling album today, you can easily see why it was so well received in the mid-70's, even smack in the middle of the disco craze. The musicianship and harmonies are excellent; indeed, all interworkings of the performances are tight, but smooth, not forced, as if every band member was enjoying his or her contribution. The songs propel themselves forward with a bright energy. The voice of Stevie Nicks is magical, as you would expect. Lindsey's vocals and guitar work are nothing short of superb. Just check out the variety of sounds he generates in "The Chain" and "You Make Loving Fun". (I single out these 2 members because their work hits home for me more than that of the other 3, but ALL members are giving their best on this album.) And, the band unintentionally (perhaps?) gives us an indication of where we are in the mid-70's, and where we are headed. The first cut, "Second Hand News", is a happy, sunny song about the joys of casual sex, which reflects society's attitude in this time before AIDS existed. BUT - in the final cut, "Gold Dust Woman", we hear about a girl with a habit, who has to "...pick up the pieces and go home...", signaling the close of the 70's when rehab became "home" for a lot of us, or else we began to hide out from AIDS, financial troubles and an increasingly threatening world situation. Just as people in the 30's sought refuge from The Great Depression by watching fluffy musicals, "Rumours" was something to help us through an era of change.

This DVD is a very good mix of music from a very good album. The surround sound is very complimentary to the original music, only more so. You will experience much more fullness and clarity due to the "separation" factor the 5.1 format allows you to experience. Bring on some more albums!

These are the greatest hits of the version of Big Mac that produced Hits with a capital H! Big Mac Attack.......2007-07-03

This is an excellent Fleetwood Mac compilations. I won't bother listing good songs, because most all are good. The album as a whole is in the vein of lite rock or pop/rock, so somebody who likes their music a bit harder might find this a bit fluffy. Because of that, I was actually fence sitting between 4 and 5 stars but was feeling generous and went with 5. Because the album is just so listenable. Very good collection.

My girlfriend is a Fleetwood fan. I'll make this one very simple. The CD has all the tunes that anyone who wants a CD with the best of the bank and Stevie Nicks should get this one.

One of the best compilations I've ever hearded; all of the songs are very known, and all of them are ORIGINAL HITS, restored from the analog recordings; great classic compositions like DREAMS, GO ON YOUR OWN WAY, LITTLE LIES, great ballads like AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW, OH DIANE!, SARA, great rock like TUSK, DON'T STOP and BIG LOVE; the first time I hearded this disc, I decided that I had to buy it!!!; when you hear this disc, you will play it one and one and one more times!!!

The Mac Rocks.......2007-01-09

Whether you are a Fleetwood Mac fan or not, this is a great collection of songs. I have always been a radio fan of Fleetwood Mac and picked up one of their concert DVDs a few months ago. I found Mac songs that I was familiar with but were never in my collectoion. Now they are. This is a great mix of Fleetwood Mac staples and if you only own one Fleetwood Mac CD, make it this one, well okay, yoy really need to own Rumours as well. Listen to Rhianon, or Golddust Woman or any of Christine's songs and listen to the great sound that was Fleetwood Mac. This is a must own album. My only complaint it that it hasn't been remixed in 5.1.

Given their monumental legacy, it's hard to imagine that the so-called "classic edition" of Fleetwood Mac essentially came together casually over chips and margaritas at an L.A. eatery; the then-obscure duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks (whose own mid-'70s debut album had initially gone almost straight to the cut-out bins) became the crucial axis of the legendary band without so much as a formal audition. As the eponymous title suggests, the 1975 Mac realignment seems like a fresh start, though tracks like Christine McVie's smooth-jazz inflected "Warm Ways" hearken back to the Bob Welch/Bare Trees/Heroes Are Hard to Find era. But it's Buckingham's compelling, updated take on '60s California folk-pop, informed by the mystique of Nicks's proto-New Age song-sorceress presumptions, that breathed new life into the veteran, chameleonic band on now-familiar songs like "Monday Morning" and "Rhiannon." His chemistry with McVie is no less powerful, yielding such Mac staples as their collaboration "World Turning" and suffusing her "Over My Head" with nervous, insistent guitar rhythms. This deluxe, remastered edition features the significantly different single mixes of "Say You Love Me," "Rhiannon," "Over My Head," and "Blue Letter" (the latter previously unissued), as well as the moody, also unreleased studio workout "Jam #2." Parke Puterbaugh's newly penned liner notes offer concise, thoughtful insights into the genesis of one of rock's greatest, if most unlikely, rebirths. --Jerry McCulley

Welcome Stevie and Lindsey!.......2007-06-13

Here is the point of Fleetwood Mac's legacy where Stephanie Lynn "Stevie" Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham are inaugurated into the band. They are the second and third American overall members(Bob Welch was the first and just left to pursue a solo career). Also at this point,the band reached the peak of their popularity which would rapidly increase with 1977's Grammy-winning RUMOURS,this album's follow-up. Nicks and Buckingham,songwriters themselves,were a musical team before joining FM. They are still in the band today with drummer Mick Fleetwood and bass guitarist John McVie(John's now-ex-wife,Christine Perfect McVie left the band before recording 2003's SAY YOU WILL). Now for the songs:MONDAY MORNING,composed and lead vocal sung by Buckingham,begins the 2002 ultimate compilation THE VERY BEST OF FLEETWOOD MAC. WORLD TURNING isn't too bad(vocals by Buckingham and CPM). CPM does a great job on OVER MY HEAD(composed by CPM and Eddy Quintela). CPM awesomely performs SAY YOU LOVE ME. You also get encores(the single versions recycled for GREATEST HITS) of OMH and SYLM. I'M SO AFRAID,by Buckingham,is pretty cool. The live version,which is a clone of TANGO IN THE NIGHT from the 1987 album of the same title,appears on TVBOFM. Of course,there's the megahit RHIANNON,composed and sung by Nicks. There's a single version of RHIANNON on this disc also which also appears on GH. The other songs are great. Nicks and Buckingham later went solo,although Nicks' solo outings were more successful then Buckingham's. CPM even went solo with her 1984 hit GOT A HOLD ON ME. Nicks' solo hits include STAND BACK,LEATHER AND LACE with ex-Eagle Don Henley,STOP DRAGGIN' MY HEART AROUND with Tom Petty,THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN,TALK TO ME,I CAN'T WAIT and ROOMS ON FIRE. Buckingham hit the Top 20 with his 1984 solo hit GO INSANE,from the album of the same title. If it hasn't happened already,both Nicks and Buckingham are eligible for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame since their solo careers both began in 1981. Buckingham's solo debut didn't garner any major hits. Nicks' solo debut album BELLA DONNA spawned LAL,TEOS and SDMHA. Her sophomore effort THE WILD HEART,released in 1983 was a commercial success as well. This album,released in 1975,originally bore(the LP label) a view of Sunset Boulevard,known as "the Burbank label". The Warner Bros. headquarters building was located in Burbank,California. This album would later be re-issued,with its original catalog number and original track line-up still intact,on a solid white,peach or tan label,which would last through the vinyl phaseout which began in 1989.

Buckingham and Nicks forever change the direction of Fleetwood Mac.......2006-10-25

The self-titled debut of the most popular lineup of Fleetwood Mac remains as fresh and enjoyable as the day it was first released. Before this album's release, the average Fleetwood Mac record sold around 300,000 copies. To the shock of everyone, this album spent months on the Hot 200, eventually hitting #1 and selling over 5 million copies - more than all of the group's previous recordings combined. However, with the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to the lineup, the record truly had the sound of new band at work. The overall sound is very much in the mold of most mid-seventies California rock, which gives the record a nice unity. Even though it is the first record for this particular lineup, the band had already perfected the eclectic sound that they are best known for.

Buckingham's early prominence in the producer's chair is largely responsible for the band's abrupt switch from old-school blues to progressive pop/rock. Buckingham also demonstrates his talents as a skilled vocalist on his impressive rendition of Michael Curtis' "Blue Letter" (the only track here not written by either Buckingham, Nicks, or Christine McVie), and a lovely reading of Nicks' "Crystal." This particular song had been previously recorded on the long-out-print Buckingham-Nicks album, and Lindsey's delicate performance will make you wish he would cover more of Nicks' material. The two numbers solely penned by Buckingham are also exceptionally tight. The energetic "Monday Morning" has an unbeatably catchy melody, while the mini-anthem "I'm So Afraid" hints at the paranoid brilliance that would fully emerge in many of Buckingham's later compositions.

Similarly, Stevie Nicks' somehow seems to have already tapped into her full potential as a songwriter and delivers two total classics right out of the box. In addition to the aforementioned "Crystal," Nicks contributes the riveting hit "Rhiannon" (#11 Pop) and the mournful "Landslide," and both remain two of her finest achievements. Not surprisingly, the mystical "Rhiannon" became one of Nicks' best-loved signature songs almost instantly after it's release, and it remains the most fondly-remembered of this album's 11 tracks. On the other hand, the uncharacteristically straightforward "Landslide" was never officially released as single, yet it has become as popular as anything the Mac ever recorded. It is now considered a tried-and-true classic, popularized through years of concert performances and cover versions. Nicks' wrenching performance, however, is the definitive rendition of the song.

Even more impressive, however, this album marks the final transformation of Christine McVie from a charmingly pleasant songwriter and vocalist into one of the greatest pure-pop craftswomen of her generation. On all previous Mac recordings, Christine was largely kept in the background with a limited number of songs making the final cut. Finally on this recording, she is given ample room to showcase her talents, and she responds with some of the finest pop recordings of the seventies. McVie displays her gift for fine-tuning expertly-crafted lyrics and melodies on the gorgeous hit "Over My Head" (#20 Pop), and the stirring "Warm Ways" demonstrates the irresistible way in which her lovely alto embodies a lyric. McVie also turns in the surprisingly sensual "Sugar Daddy" and the delightful "Say That You Love Me" (#11 Pop), both of which are perfect examples of the polished pop she is famous for. The searing "World Turning," a then-rare collaboration between McVie and Buckingham, actually comes close to monumental sound of the classic Mac and is the stunning climax to this recording.

While Fleetwood Mac isn't as highly regarded 1977's even more massively successful Rumours, it is really on the same level as that masterpiece. It was recorded in considerably less time than Rumours would eventually be, and is therefore more rough sounding and less polished than that later album, which may actually be a preferable quality to some listeners. Either way, you can't go wrong with a record that features three exceptionally strong singers and songwriters working at near peak capacity. Although this album was highly successful, nothing could prepare the Mac for what they would achieve with their next record.

Do yourself a favor and buy it.......2006-08-24

The story never gets old. With this casually recorded album of songs, Fleetwood Mac transformed itself from a low-key, underground band struggling to regain the heights of its once prestigious past as Britain's #1 blues outfit to THE premier exemplars of 70s West Coast rock. How could this happen? In retrospect, the transition was far more gradual, scattered in fits and starts across a series of critically-acclaimed recordings that sold consistently to a modest but loyal audience across the U.S. However, at the time, and certainly still in the general public's imagination Fleetwood Mac's "Fleetwood Mac" is this band's deus ex machina.

The gods appear as a starving country rock duo--Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Their musical energy, which included strong songwriting skills, voal and instrumental prowess, and an all-important accessiblity to the masses, invigorated the core blues trio: Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine McVie. Thus, an unlikely combination of musical styles is blended into a seamless masterpiece.

Every song hits. Rather than running through each one of them, I'll simply remark on a handful of my favorites. If Christine McVie's bright, Beatle-esque "Say You Love Me" proved the big AM/FM hit here, her "Sugar Daddy" is a blues stomper as sassy and authentic (and deliciously dirty) as anything from the Bessie Smith songbook. When she belts "Yes you give me all the love I need," you believe it.

Lindsey Buckingham's best moment might be in "World Turning," where his intellgient reworking of Peter Green's song of the same title continually builds the song to new peaks. His vocal interplay with Christine, moreover, shows he can sing blues as well as bluegrass.

Both Nicks compositions are highlights. The acoustic ballad "Landslide" shows a wisdom in her voice and composition skills far beyond her years. "Rhiannon," the album's greatest masterpiece at once synthesizes the best apsects of the band's previous achievements while catapulting this new lineup into the Ozone.

My Reviews are like a Circus Wheel-Changing All the Time...............2006-05-20

People- if you have been following my reviews closely (which I'm sure you haven't) you would know poor Metamorpho's life was careening out of control. But, this is what one gets by being free enough to write anything they want in any given manner, at any given moment, on any given day. I see that some of you are not fully appreciative of my reflections. That is o.k. What was I expecting? Perfection? From the human race? You all knew I was a loving soul but taking advantage of my naivity is not nice people. Not nice at all. But Metamorpho does not hold grudges and desires to still review worthy music for all of you. And, in an attempt to simplify, have I got worthy music for you!
This time out, we have the excellent first album by the new, revamped Fleetwood Mac (with the inclusion of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks) in the self titled album released in 1975. It has always boggled my mind why their next album "Rumours" was so mega while this gem was virtually overlooked. In many was it was the precursor to the emotions expressed in that album, and in my opinion, just as valid. Sadly, I have no control over what the masses decide. Choose your own examples.
But as pop-rock classics go this is one gem of an album. Many, many songs about the tangled web we weave in love relationships. And indecision rears it's laughing face at even single turn. In "Monday Morning" we have Lindsey Buckingham bemoaning the fact that his love is very inconsistent. He remains focused while she remains not sure. He "can't go on believing for long" which reflects the tiring of the situation. The music is cleverly written in a stop and go manner. "Warm Ways" by Christine McVey is a gentle, soothing love song embellished by a tender moment. But give her time. The trembling within the ground will start to appear. "Blue Letter" is a jaunty song by Lindsey. However, this time, he has tired of the situation started in the first song and he "won't be waiting around" for it to change.
We next come to the ethereal realm of Stevie Nicks with "Rhiannon". It is evident that she cannot be tied down to be anyone's consistent lover. One minute she is like a cat, and then the other minute she's like a bird. She is a complex creature that can't decide on one mind. Written basically in one chord- the band does an excellent job embellishing this with texture. "Crystal" is an amazing song due to it's wave-like movement as Lindsey realizes he has been immersed by his love which drives him for a clensing to the sea. Alternately, he is being engulfed by it as well.
"Over My Head" by Christine is a sprightly pop tune filled with paradoxes. She realizes her relationship is filled with trade-offs which are disturbing. On the one hand she is thrilled by the tender moments but they come at the price of her lover being cold and hurting her pride. A very uncomfortable situation. This theme is also revisited in her other song "Say You Love Me". Christine is an expert in writing infectious, easy groove pop tunes. We then come to "Landslide" which I think is the ultimate gem on this album. Stevie Nicks is soul-searching, trying to make sense of all her intricate feelings. Just when she thinks she has finally found herself by seeing her reflection in the snow, it is swept away by a landslide, forcing her to search again. Love the acoustic guitar. Love the lilting melody. It is majestic and perfectly reflects our own quests of who we are and how we fit into the world.
"World Turning" is about how the outside world imposes it's judgements and how we, although questioning it's wisdom, just need someone to make us face another day. Lindsey gives us a nice twangy guitar riff juxtaposed against a frazzled state of mind. "Sugar Daddy" is about Christine's need for a true lover and someone with money to take care of her. It is clear she would like one person to be all this - however, in her mind, they have become seperate.
Finally, "I'm So Afraid" is the heart of darkness that Lindsey must confront in his search for love. Our fears, it seems, not only lie in outside reality, but within ourselves as well. It is cleverly written in the pattern of a heartbeat. What I find most amazing about good music is that both the lyrics and the music work in sych to convey a mood. It is a magic that is such a joy to creative minds.
In closing, all the seeds of emotions planted here came to fruition with "Rumours". In my mind, it is definitely just as excellent. I think what it had going against it was the fact that it went more pop as opposed to previous Fleetwood Mac albums. Coupled with the fact that the previous fan base may have resented this and alot of people had not yet caught on to the new sound. In any event, if you enjoyed "Rumours" then this album is an essential counterpart and should definitely be included in your collection.
Well I did it people. I wrote a review without Metamorpho's excessive ego running wild. (Yeah, right). I will be back again, I am sure, to bring you more worthy music. Fleetwood Mac's 1997 reunion could have been the kind of event that works on video--great concert, after all--but ends up not paying off in repeated listenings on CD. But The Dance, while concentrating on the group's '70s and '80s triumphs, finds the Mac energy running high and impassioned. New songs like "Temporary One" and "Bleed to Love Her" are fine additions to the canon, while "Everywhere" and "Say You Love Me" both breeze along the way you remember them and manage a reinvention in the live setting. The dark side of the vision is accounted for with Lindsey Buckingham's crazed solo "Big Love," but best of all is "Silver Springs," wherein Stevie Nicks tears the roof off the sucker and sets fire to the rubble. --Rickey Wright

I hadn't listened to Fleetwood Mac in many years, although Rumors was a big part of my personal soundtrack in 78-80. I bought this for "Silver Springs", a truly beautiful song which I was not surprised to learn could and should have been a track on Rumors. Anyway, I was amazed how wonderful they sound in this live performance ,20 years after their heyday.A definite must have for even a casual Mac fan

I was born in 1980, but i remember my mom listening to Fleetwood Mac when I was a kid. When this concert came on TV she watched it, and being that I was in a marching band, I was captivated by the addition of the marching band at the end of the concert. We bought the DVD and CD and I must have watched and listened to it over and over and over again. Fast forward to 2007. I was borrowing my mothers car, and this CD was in the CD player. My Little Demon came on, and my 7 y/o son asked me to turn it up. We listened to that song repeatedly for the 30 minute car ride. My mothers CD has some scratches in it (she's actually on her 3rd or 4th copy since that first one), so here I am buying one for my son and I.

Fleetwood Mac - Must Own Live Album.......2007-03-05

"The Dance" was something that most people thought they would never see. Like The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over", the 70's multiplatinum version of Fleetwood Mac was a band that most people thought would never happen again. But, like The Eagles this version of the band was brought back together for a television concert and the result was the DVD and album called "The Dance". For me this is the album that really made me into a Fleetwood Mac fan. Back in the band's hey day I never really gave them much thought. Of course they were all over the radio and I liked some of their tunes ok, but I just thought of them as a top 40 singles band and never purchased or even listened to a whole album. Then in the mid 90's a friend of mine let me borrow Lindsey Buckingham's solo album "From The Cradle" and I was blown away. I had never realized what a unique talent Buckingham had and was captured by both his creative songwriting ability and instrumental prowess. Not too long after that the Fleetwood Mac reunion came along and I realized that I had never really given these guys a chance. Not only is Buckingham great on this album, but I came to appreciate Stevie Nicks and her vocal and writing contributions as well. Hell, the whole band impressed me. The album consists of plenty of Mac classics as well as four new tunes. Studio versions of some of these would show up later on the bands "Say You Will" reunion album. The new songs are all good with Buckingham's "Bleed To Love Her" and "My Little Demon" very much in his slightly off kilter style. Nick's "Sweet Girl" seems to be a look back at her younger self, and even my least favorite Mac songwriter Christine McVie scores a knockout with "Temporary One". Of the classic Mac tunes they are all delivered with energy and verve. The album opens with a great rendition of one of the band's signature tunes "The Chain". Lindsey Buckingham shines and crunches out killer guitar solos during "I'm So Afraid" and his solo acoustic rendition of "Big Love" is done very different from the studio original yet works like a charm. Nicks may not quite have the range that she once had, but still shines on "Dreams", "Rhiannon", (with it's effective slow introduction), and the truly gorgeous "Landslide". The biggest highlight for Nicks however is her impassioned delivery of "Silver Spring" her ode to Lindsey Buckingham. Maybe it's all just theater, but she spits out the lyrics of this song as if many years of frustration are welled up inside her. I remember seeing the DVD of this concert and the sight of Nicks and Buckingham singing the venomous lines to each other was truly moving. Yea, I know they have done this song many times over the years, but this time, it came across, as if she was really letting him have it. If she was just acting she really did an effective job. Christine McVie is also very good on this disc. My least favorite Mac, her voice has arguably held up the best of the three and she does a very nice job of "Everywhere", "You Make Lovin Fun", and "Say You Love Me". As an encore Fleetwood Mac bring on the USC marching band for rousing renditions of their experimental hit "Tusk", and the grand finale of "Don't Stop". To be honest I even surprise myself at the amount of praise I heap on this disc, especially considering I never was really into this band before. But....this is an outstanding live collection and a must for Fleetwood Mac fans or anyone who might what to explore these guys further.

The best FLEEWOOD MAC album.......2007-01-05

No matter if you are a big Fleetwood Mac's fan or not, you have to listen to this album. If you are around 35/40 years old, you will probably enjoy many of the tracks of the album.
It has an incredible sound quality and the versions of the original songs are great, full of inspiration and feeling.
Christine and Stevie's live performances are awesome.

One of the 10 best ever.......2007-06-27

I, like most people in the US, was first introduced to Fleetwood Mac thanks to their huge commercial successes of the late 70s early 80s. I do adore the music they produced (and continue to produce), but I am also open to the idea that there was a Fleetwood Mac before Nicks & Buckingham (and ironically on my list, there was a Buckingham Nicks before there was a Fleetwood Mac, but that's another review...)
It was probably the mid 80's when I found my first dusty copy of Bare Trees in a used LP bin. I had previously purchased a couple of their other early albums, and although I liked them alright, nothing stuck - until Bare Trees. I remember thinking - this is incredible! I still do!
Not to belittle the other bandmembers' contributions, but this is Danny Kirwan's triumph. Although his personal issues led to his departure from the band, there is no denying his musical genius.
Danny's guitar playing is impeccable and his songwriting the strongest of his carrer. Bob Welch blended beautifully into the Kirwan direction and served as a better foil than Kirwan himself did earlier for Peter Green. Christine's piano was very "mod" and complimented the dual guitars. Fleetwood and McVie are as strong here as anywhere else.
The music - Stunning. "Sunny Side of Heaven" is the best pop instrumental ever laid to vinyl. "Spare Me A Little Of Your Love" the best song Christine McVie has written (if you're a McVie fan - you know the bar is very high). The better version of Bob Welch's biggest hit, "Sentimental Lady" is also here. Danny, however, is the star - "Bare Trees", "Child of Mine", and "Dust" - all I can say is thank you, Mr. Kirwan, and thank you Fleetwood Mac.

The Mac, pre-Stevie.......2007-05-13

This is one of the older Fleetwood Mac albums out there. I had this one on 8 track!! Sounded great back then, sounds even better on CD. Sentimental Lady will get you thinking about that "one girl" way back when!! It'll also get you singing to her...If you liked Fleetwood Mac back in the late 60's early 70's, you need this album!

Arguably their best effort........2007-04-02

Fleetwood Mac, at a time in its history before it all went terribly
crazy. Christine Perfect's strong, soothing, husky sexy vocals guide
this interm masterpiece from 1972. Fleetwood Mac had taken a fork in
the road, from raw english boys with the blues, to a more groomed product
of laid back english rock. That difficult period all parents have with
their children, the one between birth, and when they, the children, leave
the nest. This period of this bands illustrious history, is as I see it
a very stable time, unlike the bad crazyness that came later with another
personal change. The music is stable, calming, even though their is
some honest rock and roll thunder flashes, and thunder rolls. Ir you
haven't heard this one, I'd suggest listening to it, and see if you can
catch the calming vibe, the quite, the spiritual/emotional boost you
may experience from this album.

Just like "Future Games", why didn't this album break Fleetwood Mac into the mainstream? The music is absolutely breathtaking. Danny Kirwan asserts himself more than every by contributing, a breathtaking 5 songs! out of the 9 on this album.

He balances his songwriting between amicable pop (the title track), bluesy rock ("Child Of Mine", "Danny's Chant"), and folky balladry and instrumentation ("Sunny Side Of Heaven", "Dust").

Christine McVie and Bob Welch with two songs each, equal in depth to Kirwan's 5. McVie's "Homeward Bound", while not anything like the more famous Simon & Garfunkel tune, definitely invokes similar imagery, albeit more desperate in the author's want and need to just get home and relax.

Welch's "The Ghost" just rolls along at a whirlwind pace, brought on by John McVie and Bob Welch dueling for dominance in the intro, which gives way to a haunting combination of slide guitar and a Mellotron Flute drenched in reverb courtesy of Christine McVie.

The almost obligatory love songs actually hold their own on this album. McVie's "Spare Me A Little Of Your Love" holds it own against her stream of late 70's/early 80's hits, while Welch's "Sentimental Lady" (which, I must say, the version on here bests Welch's late 70's reinterpretation) really just presents an aura of relaxation in the arms of the woman you love.

Overall, just a really good and underrated collection of songs (along with the predecessor "Future Games") that should have broken a talented bunch of musicians and songwriters into mainstream success, but instead sort of drifted into semi-obscurity underneath the late 70's and early 80's hits.

Kirwin out of his Tree, but he is a mad genius.......2007-02-19

With these 5 gems, all I can say is "mad genius" comes to mind...
Child Of Mine - Sunny Side Of Heaven -Bare Trees - Danny's Chant - Dust
In particular Kirwin's (Dust) is very strange (a ditty about dying and turning to dust and decomposing) , but it is beautiful. The band will miss Kirwin, he was fired soon after for inapropriate behavior issues, due to his madness. God he is such a talented man (still alive) , the fame did him in, thank god we have his wonderful music that will never die.

Spring semester 1971....Santana "Abraxis", The Who "Live At Leeds", The Doors "LA Woman", The Stones "Sticky Fingers", Fleetwood Mac "Then Play On" and "Kiln House". An embarrassment of riches that seemed like it would go on forever. They were always on the turntable, and years later when the nasty fact that CDs just didn't sound as good as LPs reared it's ugly head, these were the albums that I had to re-acquire. "Kiln House" seeped into your bones, and was simply magical. Years later, while playing in my umpteenth bar band, I asked the bass player his favorite desert island album cuts. "'Station Man' Fleetwood Mac", he said immediately and without a moments hesitation. My estimation of him rose to new heights. If you don't have this album or "Then Play On", then you have got to rectify this at once!

The original UK version is the best - 5 stars.......2007-05-08

The thing that annoys me most about this album is that is was butchered.
On the original UK version 'Underway' lead into 'One Sunny Day'. This track has been shortened and it souns awful. 'One Sunny Day' was Kirwans best contribution to this album and it isn't here!. There was no need to have 'O'h Well' on this album becuase it was on the 'Fleetwood Mac's Greatest Hits' album (the red one) where it belonged. The least they could have done was to remove the overlap, it sounds bad. Then there's Madge. What can I say? I would like to search for the person who butchered this album and fight him or her. It would make me feel much better. Then, there's the sound quality... The original album (I have two vinyl copies - with different album covers) is one of my favourite ablums of all time and it grieves me to give it four stars.

Re-listening to an old "friend" again........2007-03-08

My next door friend and Bassist in my High School Band and beyond, Mike, and I first enjoyed this when it came out in 1969-70....we had picked up on "English Rose" and really liked the Blues and Tunes, but "Then Play On" was something new to our ears.....at the time we knew little about the players except that the original 3 were from Mayall's Bluesbreakers...at the time of our discovery and enjoyment listening to the LP many hours and hours, we were unaware of the influence of the very young Danny Kirwan and the prescence of Christine Perfect on Keys...I recently purchased the CD, having given up the original LP back in the 70's and having listened to it on a cassette copy over the years....The guitar interplay between Green and Kirwan is worth the purchase alone...nothing else quite sounds like this recording....the Plaintive, melancholy tunes that Kirwan and both Green wrote and the Rockin "Rattlesnake Shake" as well as Green's " Oh Well" are true classics for all time....the one thing that pervades through many of these tunes is a loose soulful Jamming that was created as they wrote and recorded....I only wish that I could have seen this Band play live...of course, Jeremy Spencer contributed almost nothing to this recording ,though his slide guitar and on stage persona were integral to the sound of Mac......I never tire of listening to this one of a kind recording...I recommend buying all of the early Mac recordings up through the Bob Welch era with Kirwan still playing and writing on "Bare Trees and "Future Games"....then you can get a sense of how unique these players are.....and let's not forget how great and innovative McVie and Fleetwood are as the bottom of this sound...they will always be one of the best anchor teams in Rock.

I'm knocking down 1 star for a few weak tracks and horrible sound, Peter Green always said if they had a better producer, they would have been huge in the beginning era of the group.

1. Coming Your Way - Danny Kirwin is coming into his own on this record.
2. Closing My Eyes - Great dual guitar harmonys after the last verse and haunting track overall with kettle drum by Mick.
3. Show-Biz Blues - Not my Favorite,acoustic steel blues rave up
4. My Dream - Instrumental by Danny
5. Underway - Another instrumental this time it's Peter's
6. Oh Well - Peter Green's big moment, the classical part is too longgggg.
7. Although The Sun Is Shining - Kirwin's haunting voice is center stage here
8. Rattlesnake Shake - Another forgettable joke number about Mick
9. Searching For Madge - Jam 1
10. Fighting For Madge - Jam 2
11. When You Say - Kirwin is a loss for words
12. LIke Crying - Kirwins song about a girl who likes girls

Classic Blues Rock Album.......2007-01-11

Quiet an assortment of tunes on this one. I call it the versatile album because the band delves into the classical music a bit then grinds out some heavy guitar, rhythms, in other portions of the album. It's kinda like a roller coaster ride sometimes you catch your breathe then your adrenaline revs up.

Hypnotized and Emerald Eyes are, as others have said before me, worth the price of admission. There are several other noteworthy cuts (Keep on Going, The Way I Feel and Why). As with most albums there are also a couple of ordinary tunes - thank goodness for the "skip" function! All-in-all, Mystery to Me is a very solid effort, one that was strangely ignored in 1973 and continued to fly under the radar even after FM and Rumours lit up the charts.

Where is Bob Welch? His eerie and infectious song "Hypnotized" is the best highlight from this album. It received a lot of college airplay for that reason, with it's references to the writings of Carlos Castaneda and other possibilities of thought expansion. It's a perfect bridge between the naivete of the Sixties and the vacuousness of later decades. Put the track on your Ipod or other drive and enjoy.

Two years away from the white "Fleetwood Mac" album, which introduced a new line-up and sound, the Mac weren't exactly muddling along as much as they were lackadaisically finding their niche in rock & blues. Although this release wasn't a big seller (which might have been the fault of that cover painting--UGLY!!), several of the songs here are winners, with Bob Welch doing his best work with the band and Christine McVie bringing in more of her lovely, intriguingly melancholy odes to both giddy love and burned affairs. The rambling, cheerful "Forever" (co-written by bassist John McVie!) sums up this album's spirit most accurately--joyfully directionless, and sometimes quite heartfelt though without a truly solid ground to bank it. That is until the closing number, Christine McVie's "Why", which plays like a powerful sucker-punch to a dead romance. 'B'

New Fleetwood Mac.......2006-07-17

Having been introduced to Fleetwood Mac via 'Rumors' in the 80's (yes, very late), this 'original' crew presents very new and delightful music. At first my reaction was, what have I wasted money on now? But by the third listen, it was great. Highly recommed it, especially to blues lovers.

The Rumours of the Bob Welch Era.......2006-06-29

I love Mystery To Me. This is the first album that takes five writing credits and sings on six. Emerald Eyes, Hypnotized, and FM's version of For Your Love are Bob Welch's best vocals on this album. However, you can hear his love for R&B in The City and Somebody. An awesome album period.

Great in-between album.......2007-06-14

I like this album. It has classic Spencer/Kirwan overtones that peaked on this album, in my opinion. In between Peter Green and Bob Welch, they showed 'Mac a new direction for their music. Definitely worth having.

Enjoying the old Mac.......2007-03-08

Kiln House is one of my 2 favorite early Mac recordings along with Then Play On.....You will love the guitar work and writing that Spencer and Kirwan produce here....This recording without founder and mentor Peter Green is a substantial departure from Green's Mac....Spencer contributes great parodies of early Rock n Roll's Elvis and Holly as well as callaborations with Kirwan that were literally created from Green's departure....my favorite cut on this is Station Man....it slowly meanders into a burning chuggin rock with soulful harmonies, and shows Spencer and Kirwan jamming beautifully.....Jewel Eyed Judy is another cut that shows the strength of Spencer's vocals as well....I just missed seeing this Mac as Spencer abruptly left in LA and was replaced with Bob Welch....Kiln House is another example of the immense talents that flowed through and in this Band.

The Mac, now led by Danny and Jeremy smoked lots of hash, lived in the Kiln House, went a little crazy and wound up with these three gems, which make it an essential record.

A Transitional Gem.......2007-01-17

Fleetwood Mac had just suffered the loss of Peter Green, who left for reasons irrelevant to speak of here. But having been a three guitar band, now reduced to two, and then adding keyboards from Christine McVie to round out their sound, even expand it, this set of material is just wonderful.

In no way abandoning their blues roots, they also expand beyond that into other realms of expression, from the '50's to the emerging progressive music of the '70's.

'Hi Ho Silver' is a great tune with a lot of spirit, 'Station Man' tips to their blues/rock foundation, 'Wishing Well' is a great tome to the romantic, 'Jewel Eyed Judy' is a great torch song, of sorts. And the rest that just demonstrated that this incarnation of the band was by no means worse off with the loss of Pete, just different, even presaging the eventuall arrival of Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks after the departures of Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwin and Bob Welsh.

The old version of Fleetwood Mac is truly special (well, this isn't the OLDEST version, but it's not exactly the album people remember the band for).

The music on here is quite good. I don't know what else to say. It's a special album because the music is very unusual- almost haunting. Half of the album is dominated with quiet, dreamy parts while the other half is just really good upbeat rock music. It's really fascinating.

Pick up Future Games for a taste of old Fleetwood Mac (and in my opinion, the BETTER period of the band compared to the overplayed commercial period).

Kirwin saves the day again.......2007-02-19

Danny Kirwins 3 gems...
Woman Of 1000 Years - Sands Of Time - Sometimes are real treats and save this otherwise mediocre album with newcomer Bob Welch who wrote the haunting title track, McVie's Show me a Smile is also a highlight.

Truly underrated album..........2007-01-06

How come this album (or "Bare Trees") didn't break Fleetwood Mac into the mainstream? The music is excellent on here. "Woman of 1000 Years" is worth the price of the album alone. It's a quiet opening that reveals a subtle folk-rock side of the group that should've been explored more on this album and in later albums (which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5). Aside from that, the 1-2-3 punch of "Future Games", "Sands Of Time" and "Sometimes" really is the gem of the record. Some of the other tunes like "Lay It All Down", and "What A Shame" are a bit subpar, but still enjoyable. Also this album introduced the underrated underappreciated Christine McVie, whose 2 contributions on this record ("Morning Rain", "Show Me A Smile") serve as a great introduction to her tenure with Fleetwood Mac. If you liked the Peter Green era or if you like the Buckingham Nicks era, you seriously need to consider purchasing this album plus "Bare Trees". I really believe that Fleetwood Mac were at their best on these 2 albums.

The Mac's Masterpiece.......2006-10-02

This is the masterpiece! Not in terms of sales,charts or popularlity, but by creativity and musicianship. Take a little time out. Relax. Prepare to mellow out. Grab some headphones if you have them and listen. You will understand. Only knock, mastering could be improved upon. Future Games indeed!

Not a smooth transition album.......2006-09-06

The Future Games LP by Fleetwood Mac was released at the end of FM's blues era. Peter Green had long left the band. Guitarist/singer Jeremy Spencer went joined a religious commune, and Danny Kirwin was on his way to total meltdown. And, while the band, tried to fill in the gaps with the addition of Christine Perfect aka McVie and Bob Welch they just couldn't get back what was lost. If the preceeding Kiln House and Bare Trees LPs are classics, Future Games just comes off as a contractural obligation piece. There are no strong songs here. Much on this album, like Woman of 1,000 Years, Sands of Time, and Show Me A Smile, are nice to listen too, there is nothing memorable here. If you are an Fleetwood Mac fan, than pick up the CD to fill in the blanks. FM's transition from a rock/blues band to a pop band was not a smooth one, and it shows on Future Games.
