It's difficult to separate Aerosmith from their glorious/inglorious history--one that's seen more revivals than West Side Story. For better or worse, the stalwart Boston quintet carry a load of preconceptions that are impossible to shake. Thus Just Push Play begs the question: If this 12-song set was the product of a bunch of upstarts, would it cause much of a commotion? The answer: Absolutely! Working with coproducers and song collaborators Marti Frederiksen and Mark Hudson, Aerosmith have forged an album that gracefully fuses '70s hard-rock grit with contemporary gloss. The pop-infused likes of the sweeping "Jaded" and the insistent "Sunshine" best demonstrate the formula that Tyler, Perry, and company have settled on for now, while gliding strings surge over Tyler's patented screech and the no-nonsense grind of the four instrumentalists. Mailed-in lyrics and a few self-conscious nods to the times mar Just Push Play, but the pleasures to be had here overwhelm the album's deficiencies. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2007-07-08

This cd is full of creative songs done in the Aerosmith style! My favorite is the Just Push Play!! This cd rocks and is good on a long drive!!

4 out of 5 stars Aerosmith's "Pet Sounds", or "Sgt. Pepper", take your pick.......2007-04-26

There is a tendency in the music business to see just how far you can take a particular formula. For this album, and for Aerosmith, the answer is "all the way baby!". They truly left no stone unturned in an effort to inject their sound with every contemporary pop cliche' and idiom (funk, rap, eastern music, grunge, techno, etc.). The Beatles, by comparison, sought to distinguish themselves in the studio, beginning with the "Revolver" and "Rubber Soul" period, culminating with their magnum opus "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band" (itself originally conceived as their answer to the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds"). Once they determined that there was nowhere left to go from a production standpoint, they did a 180-degree turn and put out the "White Album", a back-to-basics, no-frills rock album which showcased the individual songwriting talents of the various band-members.

Aerosmith, being the classic rock band that they are, are treading a similar path in their evolution. And, they ended up coming to the same conclusion as the Beatles, which is that it's important not to lose touch with your roots-the original source of your inspiration and passion. Steven Tyler put it succinctly when he said "there's only so far you can take it (i.e. professional songwriters, multiple producers, pro tools) before you're just polishing a turd" to paraphrase. They have since revitalized and re-energized themselves by making a back-to-basics album filled with blues standards called "Honkin' On Bobo", which turned out to be the perfect antidote for those fans who were disenfranchised by the slick production of "Just Push Play".

With all of this being said, "Just Push Play" is alternately brilliant and cluttered. The disc bears repeated listening, because there are many, many great features buried in the mix. To suss them all out, play around with your equalizer, try it with and without headphones, and be sure to turn up the volume! You will find layer upon layer of vocal harmonies, strings, guitars and various types of "fairy dust" sprinkled throughout.

My only real criticism of the disc is simply that it has a somewhat linear quality to it, primarily due to the relentlessly high level of production on almost every track. There are some quality compositions here, and loads of personality (courtesy of Mr. Tyler), and quality musicianship is a given with this band. However, not every song deserves the "star treatment", and it would have been nice if they scaled back in some instances (just because you have 128 tracks doesn't mean you have to use every one of them!). Remember the old days when you had 2-3 radio-friendly singles, a couple of simple acoustic numbers, a ballad or two and some quirky B-sides for good measure?? You won't find that here. But it's still a solid 4-star effort from one of the best rock 'n' roll bands of all time. They've earned their place in rock history, and can do as they like at this point. Dry your tears classic rock fans!

4 out of 5 stars The Next Step.......2007-03-12

After the amazing Aerosmith release 'Nine Lives' which touched on some new directions,I (along with all their die hard fans) wondered where their music would go next...the answer was found with the release 'Just Push Play'
for reasons unknown, the radio stations did not push this as hard as the last several Aerosmith releases, which is a shame because this is a very good CD...I don't think it's quite as good as nine lives but they were taking some chances which takes guts...there are more then enough great songs on here to make anyone happy,I think part of the problem was the choice in which song to release as a single,'Jaded' is a great song but it is a little on the slow side,I think a much better choice for a first single would have been 'Just Push Play' or 'Outta Your Head' and then follow that up with the absolutely gorgeous song 'Luv Lies' (one of the best they've ever recorded) but that's just my opinion...I think the CD would have done a lot better if people knew that it rocked rather then hearing 'Jaded' and thinking the whole album might be softer music

beyond beautiful is typical Aerosmith (in my opinion a very good thing) great rocking tune to start off the CD

Just push play - is just an awesome song,it rocks and has some very clever lyrics, one of the best songs on the CD

jaded - is another beautiful song,a great tune that should have been released as a single but only after a few of the others

fly away from here - brilliant, great slow song, lots of feeling and emotion

trip hoppin - a little bit different feel,still a good song,but a bit of a departure

sunshine - great song, lots of thought went into this, has a very different feel from other stuff Aerosmith did,I like it

under my skin - not one of the best

luv lies - perfect! this song is so beautiful, should have been a huge hit
a slow song that is just amazing

outta your head - next to luv lies, this is my favorite song on the CD,it kicks some serious butt!!!,great rocking song with great cleaver lyrics

drop dead gorgeous - another example of a different kind of vibe,it's a gamble that I think paid off, this song is great,I love the lyrics

light inside - one of the weaker songs,it doesn't suck but it isn't up to the rest of the album

avant garden - a beautiful way to close the album...a nice soft song filled with emotion

the upside - more then enough great songs to make any music fan smile, the songs are catchy and well done, the highlights are 'luv lies' 'outta your head' 'just push play' 'fly away from here' and 'beyond beautiful' and 'jaded'

the downside - a few filler songs, and a bit experimental for those expecting the 'classic' aerosmith sound

the bottom line - I highly recommend this CD to all Aerosmith fans...the songs are great, the production is awesome,if you're new to the band, start with 'O Yeah' and 'Young Lust' but this and Nine Lives are definitely worth having in your collection...donutman says so!!!

2 out of 5 stars Stay away from this one!.......2007-02-27

This is NOT one of Aerosmiths better efforts. Even the radio track is only fair. The rest of this CD is very mediocre.

4 out of 5 stars More Of The Same.......2007-01-25

More of the same from Aeromsith. Another good quality disc, but nothing in particular that really stands out for me. The album had several big hit singles, "Jaded" and "Just Push Play" which I like. Overall the album has a bit more of a modern feel with samples, a little techno here and there, and Tyler occasionally rapping. Another solid, but unspectacular album.

5 out of 5 stars True Rock and Roll!.......2002-02-27

The boys of Aerosmith are at it again with yet another kick-butt CD. Although they slip out of their normal character in this one, the songs range anywhere from a soft ballad like "Jaded," to hard rock in "Just Push Play." This CD is awesome and I recommend it for anyone who has a true "Rock and Roll Soul!"

          5 out of 5 stars SACD--do I need this?.......2001-07-24

Do I need to have an SACD player to play this or can I just use a regular CD player?

If you're looking for songs like "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing," Don't look here. Although there is a couple power ballads, they are Aerosmith originals. These guys never cease to amaze. There are a thousand bands that would die to have some of what these guys got, Rock'n'Roll Soul! Hottest track so far is 'Just Push Play.' Put on the headphones, crank it high and press track 2. It'll rip your guts out. Great album!

5 out of 5 stars They have done it again!!!!!!!.......2001-05-15

This is an excellent variety of music. There is not one song on this CD that I do not completely enjoy. The music rocks and the vocals do not disappoint. The only gripe I have with Aerosmith is that it is much too long between CD's. I know perfection takes time but it is hard to wait. I can't wait for the tour.

4 out of 5 stars aerosmith still has it!.......2001-05-13

it freakin' rocks! i love that it was recorded in a different fashion than the other albums (they took a chance with all the new digital hardware). hey, if aerosmith can record on digital equiptment, i don't wanna hear any ... from all the analog junkies! this album sounds great, and rocks out! peace.

Killer new album by AEROSMITH , JUST PUSH PLAY is both in style with classic aerosmith and music in the new millenium. With one bonus track. Great ballads such as JADED and FLY AWAY FROM HERE and the gut wrenching rock you expect with songs like JUST PUSH PLAY, SUNSHINE, DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, and OUTTA YOUR HEAD.
