While Done with Mirrors marked the beginning of Aerosmith's remarkable career comeback (and a gratifying return to rollicking '70s form), this is the album that both reclaimed their widespread fame and made even longtime cynics take notice. Fresh from rehab, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry lead the band through a strong collection that rivals such previous high points as Toys in the Attic and Rocks, though in a much more pop-oriented vein. That's largely the province of producer Bruce Fairbairn and hired-gun songwriters Desmond Child and Jim Vallance (hired upon Mirrors' commercial disappointment). But on this record, those outside influences are still largely invisible, even if Fairbairn's production sheen now seems '80s generic. Fueled by the playful staples "Rag Doll" and "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," and seasoned with the Delta blues fetish of "Hangman Jury" and, of course, a patented Big Power Ballad ("Angel"), it's an album that's become all but ubiquitous. Thankfully, the band's own gritty sensibility still informs tracks like "St. John" and "Girl Keeps Coming Apart," as well as a rambunctiously reverent take on the classic Beatles B-side, "I'm Down." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-07-08

This is a wonderful album. It has been out for a while, but I just got around to getting it. All the songs on here are great. My favorite is "Magic Touch". I wish I would have heard more of these songs on the radio. A big plus is that all the lyrics to the songs are included in the insert booklet. I highly recommend this CD. It didn't get the credit it deserved.

5 out of 5 stars Best Comeback Album ... Ever.......2007-03-23

The second album after Joe Perry and Brad Whitford were back with Aerosmith, and the first not "under the influence" is a tour de force rocker that smokes from start to finish. "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)", "Rag Doll", "Hangman Jury" and the title track are all classics and the rest of the tunes all keep the action coming. They also do a great cover of the Beatles' "I'm Down", the B-side of the "Help" single, a typical McCartney tribute to 50's rockers like Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. The "Bad Boys" are back!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Big Comeback.......2007-01-25

The first album from the now "sober" Aerosmith and the beginning of their huge comeback that has continued to this day. Some people look at this album as a sell-out due to the influx of outside writers and the general polished sound of the album. Personally I think it rocks. The band sounds rejuvenated and there is a lot of great material to be found on this disc. The album spawned the huge hits "Rag Doll", "Dude Looks Like A Lady", and the lame "Angel". Overall most of the rest of the songs are good to great Aerosmith. "Hangman Jury" is cool. "Girl Keeps Coming Apart" has a nice Joe Perry guitar solo. The title track is a nice rocker and they even throw in an instrumental called "The Movie" which works quite well too. Overall I think this was a great comeback album.

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.great stuff........2007-01-07

wow!!i just heard a new song from this band that i really loved which is instrumental and it is called the movie and i think it is one of the best instrumental songs i have ever heard.the first instrumental song was a song by metallica but this one by aerosmith is even better as it rocks even harder.i played it 7 times yesterday and i thought it was a great driving song.aerosmith made lots of great driving songs that are excellent for highway bangers.just now i was listening to that song on the vinyl and i thought how that song sounded way back in 1987 even though 1987 was a long time ago i wasnt even born in that time but it sounded good too although i like it better in my car. i love this album and other great songs like dude looks like a lady rock really hard.my favorite songs by aerosmith are the movie, dude look like a lady, janies got a gun, sweet emotion.the 1980s were my favorite years in music as there were more than 20 great albums in every year in that decade with numerous hard rock anthems.please get this if you love hard driving rock music. id play this on the road!!

5 out of 5 stars Slick & Polished Record - A Great Comback For Aerosmith.......2006-07-12

Label - Geffen.

COMMENTS: Two years prior, "Done With Mirrors" (1985) marked a comeback of sorts for Aerosmith. The Toxic Twins were supposedly sober and ready to take America by storm, again. Decades later, the band is still on top of the world - giving us fresh music and selling millions of albums. Looking back, the late 70's and early 80's were a rough period for Aerosmith. Jack Daniels was the beverage of choice for band members, drugs, infighting, and ultimately guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford went their separate ways. 1985 saw them back in the studio - wanting to cut an album, wanting to rock & roll... and "Done With Mirrors" proved they could still do it. With "Permanent Vacation", Aerosmith proved they were still a hit making rock machine. "Vacation" was professional, slick, and polished. 12 fabulous songs filled with catchy hooks, modest tongue-in-cheek humor was present again, and a few huge hits to boot - "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)", "Rag Doll" and "Angel" - marking their return to form! As much as the hits received major airplay, the deeper album cuts were simply gems... the 1-2 punch of openers "Heart's Done Time" and "Magic Touch" get the album off to a rocking start. Perry's blistering guitar work on "Simoriah" and the title track. Ultra cool swaggering songs "St. John" and "Hangman Jury", their first Beatle's cover "I'm Down", as well as the closing instrumental "The Movie". Thoroughly listenable - every track. As much as "Permanent Vacation" saw the band gelling again, it was a welcome comeback for one of America's all-time legendary bands. Classic disc (5-stars).

While it doesn't quite hang together as well as does the follow-up Pump, Permanent Vacation marked Aerosmith's rebirth as a viable rock band. On the strength of singles "Rag Doll," "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," and "Angel" (a worthy entry from the band that basically invented the power ballad), Aerosmith came roaring back into the charts with a vengeance, proving that rock & rollers really can claw their way to the top more than once. Their roots show in a couple of bluesy tracks ("St. John" and "Hangman Jury"), while other songs (notably "Magic Touch" and "Simoriah") are quintessential 1980s rockers. Overall the singles on Permanent Vacation are stronger than the album as a whole, but it was this album that announced that Aerosmith were back. --Genevieve Williams

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Aerosmith in their prime.......2003-02-28

"Permanent vacation" is one of the better, if not the best Aerosmith album ever. The previous "Done with mirrors" wasn't all bad but it sure wasn't very exciting. This time Aerosmith had a lot of better songs and the whole album gives a sense that the band had decided to do things properly. With the help from songwriters like Desmond Child (was there any hair metal band that he didn't wrote songs for?) and Jim Vallance (Bryan Adams' co-writer), "Permanent vacation" turned out to be a solid rock album. There's a lot of enjoyable tunes like the melodic "Magic touch", the groovy "Rag doll", and the catchy "Dude (looks like a lady)". "Hangman jury" and the title track "Permanent vacation" are also highlights, and those of you who think a good hard rock album needs a ballad - you get that in "Angel". Even `tho Aerosmith usually have a rather rattling approach they manage to keep that under control on this release.

After this, Aerosmith went on and recorded "Pump" which also is a solid effort, maybe a little uneven in comparison to "Permanent vacation". Next it was time for the more commercial "Get a grip", which included hit singles like "Living on the edge", "Crying" and "Crazy". These three albums are all worth having, but I'd start with "Permanent vacation".

4 out of 5 stars Their Comeback Album.......2002-09-19

PERMANENT VACATION is the album that helped AEROSMITH establish once again their rightful place on top of the American rock scene. RAG DOLL, DUDE(LOOKS LIKE A LADY), ANGEL are the 3 MTV favorites from this album that pushed them to the top once again. Well the album isnt as raw and dirty as TOYS or ROCKS, this still has some killer rock songs that show the band still rockin like they did in the 70's. Besides the 3 songs mentioned above, the listener will enjoy listening to MAGIC TOUCH, HEARTS DONE TIME, SIMORIAH, GIRL KEEPS COMING APART. ...

4 out of 5 stars NOT the best they can do.......2001-08-14

this album is quite good but it's not an album who can become your favorite album if you hear it 5 times you won't hear it again but still it's fine rock

2 out of 5 stars Oh how the mighty have fallen..........2001-07-23

This disc marks the point where Aerosmith made their career re-defining comeback. It also marks the point where they descended into MTV/Hollywood inspired mediocrity. Aerosmith is often compared to the Rolling Stones, and just like Mick and Keith and company, Aerosmith lost the hard edge. New Aerosmith fans often say this is their best, and the band has pandered to them in that everything they have released since is basically a rehash of this disc. Power ballads, Alicia Silverstone (where is she now?), jamming with Britney Spears? What happened to the 70's glory days when Aerosmith rivaled Led Zeppelin? One exception on this record: "Hangman's Jury" sounds like it could have been on "Rocks."

      5 out of 5 stars Nicely done.......2001-04-22

I do not have this album, but I have heard my cousin's tape. This is an awesome CD. Joe Perry has great guitar riffs and Steven Tyler has his regular, great voice of his. There are also great synthesizers. Some good songs are "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)," "Rag Doll," "Heart's Done Time," "Hangman Jury," "Permanent Vacation" and "Angel."
