This compilation and "greatest hits" package has the odd distinction of being released well before the band hit its stadium-filling prime in the mid-to-late '70s. This album essentially bridges the considerable gap between original leader Syd Barrett's baroque psychedelic pop-single bent (exemplified here by the band's first chart hit "See Emily Play" and the cross-dressing mini-epic "Arnold Layne," both stellar singles left off the band's debut album) and the more ponderous musical pretensions of Roger Waters, the band's de facto leader after mental illness sidelined Barrett early on. It's a good introduction to the band's foundations for Floyd novices, and the inclusion of the early singles and two early outtakes ("Julia Dream" and "Biding My Time") make it a must for aficionados. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Nicely captures the 1967-1971 timeframe.......2007-07-01

Released in 1971, Relics presents a great compilation of various studio tracks taken from the albums Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967); A Saucerful of Secrets (1968); and the soundtrack to the film More (1969) along with a few outtakes and tracks released as singles recorded during the 1967-1971 timeframe. Although the cover to this remastered CD is very different from the LP I had as a kid (with the grotesque, four-eyed heads on it) the music is the same and sounds as good now as it did when I first listened to it. Although I am not a huge fan of compilations, Relics holds together very well as a complete work and captures a much neglected period in the career of Pink Floyd.

Two lineups are represented on Relics including the 1967 group comprised of Rick Wright (mellotron, piano, organ, and vocals); Roger Waters (bass guitar, vocals); Nick Mason (drums and percussion); and Syd Barrett (vocals, electric guitar; slide guitar). After Syd left the band, David Gilmour (electric and acoustic guitars; vocals) joined somewhere around 1968.

My favorite tracks include the lengthy freak-out Interstellar Overdrive; the spacey, mellotron heavy, Julia Dream; the two pieces by Rick Wright (Remember a Day and Paintbox); the lazily drifting Cirrus Minor; and the scary track Careful with that Axe, Eugene. Of course, at the opposite end of the spectrum is the bone-crushing volume of The Nile Song. Biding my Time was recorded around the time of the Meddle recording sessions (1971) and is not bad at all - in fact, I wish it had been included on Meddle instead of San Tropez and Seamus. All in all, I think the tracks selected nicely sum up the alternately dreamy and frightening space rock "vibe" of Pink Floyd's pre-Dark Side of the Moon (1973) output.

This remastered CD is OK and features decent sound quality along with a glossy insert without any useful information at all. Come to think of it, this remastered CD is a bit sloppy - for example, the times listed on the CD for some of the tracks (e.g. Interstellar Overdrive) are way off. Notwithstanding, this is recommended along with Piper at the Gates of Dawn; A Saucerful of Secrets; More; Ummagumma (1969); Atom Heart Mother (1970); Meddle (1971); and Obscured by Clouds (1972). Ultimately, Relics should serve as a great introductory sampler for those folks that are curious about the early and extremely psychedelic phase of Pink Floyd.

2 out of 5 stars Very "seventies".......2007-05-14

Certain tracks a bit "off the wall" (pardon the pun) but great for a trip of nastalgia.

5 out of 5 stars Its a comp but its also their best!.......2007-04-26

Pink Floyd have plenty of good albums with Piper at the gates being one of my favorites but this comp of early stuff i listen to more than any other. Floaty, whimsical, sad, haunting, and playful all come to mind and even Roger Waters manages to outdo barrett on the very weird and pysche Julia Dream. Wrights Remember a Day is also very good if not in the same vein of Barretts songwriting style. The first two Barrett singles Arnold and Emily are classic early floyd tunes that are must haves for fans of 60s psychedelia. This album and Piper make great back to back listens and though the argument could be made for many of Pinks other albums ill take these two to my grave.

3 out of 5 stars Odd compilation.......2007-03-09

This was a compilation of early material that Pink Floyd released in 1971. Five of the tracks are from their first three albums, and the rest are assorted singles and b-sides. The real reason to pick up Relics is to get the two early, classic Floyd singles, "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play". These are two of the best tunes the band recorded with Syd Barrett at the helm. "Paintbox" is a very nice Rick Wright tune, quite pop-oriented and less psychedelic than his 2 tunes on Saucerful of Secrets. "Biding My Time" was unreleased until this compilation: a bluesy tune with Roger Waters on vocals, Rick Wright on trombone and a scorching David Gilmour solo at the end. "Julia Dream" is a gloomy but ultimately inconsequential track. (Very weird lyrics, though -- not sure what is up with the scaly armadillo.) "Careful with That Axe Eugene" is a classic early Floyd track, though live versions from the '68-'71 period tend to be much better. Check out Ummagumma or Live at Pompeii. There isn't much to say about the 5 album tracks, except that the band could have picked better tunes from More and A Saucerful of Secrets. You'll probably want to hear the original albums anyway.

This disc definitely worth it for most of the tracks not available on the regular albums -- especially the two singles with Syd.

5 out of 5 stars Remember A Day.......2007-02-03

The first Pink Floyd singles album in it's 3rd cover. The first was a drawing of the ship by band member Nick Mason but the American label didn't like it so they used a cover of an Inca head with an extra set of eyes. during it's lp release this was on many labels as well as being the only cheap" Floyd album. As far as the album itself, I think it's picked pretty well. It starts out with a trio of Sid Barret era songs Arnold Layne, Intersteller Overdrive and See Emily Play. These are very good and a nice intro for people who might not be familiar with this lineup. Next we move to the band's second album A Saucerful Of Secrets with Remember A Day which is one of my favorite Rick Wright songs. Next up is the single Paintbox which is another Rick Wright song. This is followed by Julia Dream one of the band's prettiest songs and was also the first to feature a major vocal part by David Gilmour. The single version of Careful With That Axe, Eugene isn't as involved as the live version of Ummagumma but is good none the less. Next, are a couple of songs from the More soundtrack. Cirrus Minor is a classic Pink Floyd song, however, I've personally never cared for The Nile Song and it isn't one I would pick for this album. Biding My Time finds us jumping ahead in time from '69 to '71 and production wise sounds closer to latter Floyd than the early stuff. Bike brings us full circle back to the Barret lineup. All in all, a very good release however for this remastered cd I wish that they would have stuck on some bonus songs like some of the out of print early singles.

4 out of 5 stars another CD I missed.......2006-08-18

Deee-Lite made 3 or 4 CDs and not a lot of remixes... it wasn't until Sampladelic Relics & Dancefloor Oddities that I was made aware of them. `Groove Is In the Heart' is still my favorite... with a lyric or two that I didn't hear before. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars A Really Good CD---Here's Why..........2006-03-17

This was the first CD of Deee-lite I ever bought and liked it right away. It's a techno, beat-driven remix album, but it still maintains the funky grooviness deee-lite is known for, in fact it's better than their "real" albums. Sampladelic Relics & Dancefloor Oddities carries a more ubdated techno sound, but manages to capture the fun soul of Deee-lite very well. The songs flow into eachother nicely and are occasionally preceded by short tracks, for example the slam poetry of Kier on the track "Mind Melt". Some of the mixes are styled in lyrical song fashion, including "Groove is in the Heart", "I Had a Dream I Was Falling Thru a Hole in the Ozone Layer", and the VERY well done "I Won't Give Up". If you're looking for a fun album with psychedelic soul, this is a good one to choose.

3 out of 5 stars Many a "Good Beat"........2005-04-19

It's your basic remix album, just good. I'm gonna guess casual fans can pass on this, and go for the hits disc. However, true fans of Deee-lite, or fans of electronica/dance music, may expierience a "Mind Melt" upon listening. None of the originals are really improved on, they're just much different. Some are nearly unrecognizable, some are slowed down or sped up quite a bit. This is surely full of good beats though, good samples, and it's a good 69 minutes long. If you're forever waiting on that Lady Miss Kier solo album, you know you need to pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars BEST DEEE-LITE CD.......2003-03-01

...This is-by far-one of the best dance CDs ever! I wish there were more CDs that had this many great songs...I have World Clique too and it is also good, but not as many good songs. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Chill-Out with some great Beats!.......2002-02-09

If you think of Deee-Lite as funky with a twist of somethin' eighties- THINK AGAIN!!! This album is INCREDIBLE! Everyone I play it for wants to know who it is and how to get it. It's mostly DRUM & BASS remixes of good melodies with GREAT BEATS and excellent vocal samples from the orginals. If you like ANY techno and don't know what to buy or where to start- here's the place! I have listened to this CD so much I have had to replace it twice. Take me up on it- and if you don't like it you can replace my scratched copy! LOL.

3 out of 5 stars For the diehards, and maybe the casual fans.......2005-01-14

Supersonic & Demonic Relics (1999). Not to be confused with SUPERSONIC RELICS (also 1999) while having the same tracks, it is a "clean" or "edited" version of this album.

This album is basically a combination of 1991's DECADE OF DECADENCE and 1994's (although I may be mistaken on the year) QUARTERNARY, with some extra tracks added in for good measure. Keep in mind, this is not a greatest hits album, but a collection of B-sides and rarities. One reviewer put it best when they said it was the "best of the b-sides" or something to that effect. It pretty much is. Is it worth picking up? Yes, partly because it's extremely hard to find QUARTERNARY these days, and also, it's got some pretty good songs on it too. If you do happen to own both the aforementioned albums then there isn't much point to owning this...except for collectors. Casual fans aren't likely to dig this, but they should give it a shot anyway.

Some tracks you should check: "Bittersuite", "So Good, So Bad", "Sinners and Saints" and the odd but cool "Mood Ring", which shows you what it's like to be drunk in the studio with the Crue. A good album to own. 11/15

1 out of 5 stars stuff that wasn't on any albums for a reason........2002-03-16

    4 out of 5 stars RANDY CASTILLO?.......2000-12-23

The person that reviewed this CD and stated that "Randy is on" on this CD seems to be confused... this album was released well before Randy was in the band (signed-on for New Tattoo) and many were recorded YEARS before the album was actually compiled.

This CD could most accurately be described as a "Best of B-sides"... many of these are Crue recordings that have surfaced previously on Crue albums (i.e. Decade of Decadence).

This album is most fitting for only hardcore Crue fans that do not already own this material on other releases or bootlegs.

4 out of 5 stars crue rocks the world.......2000-08-07

"MONSTEROUS"&"SAY YEAH"are good songs for audience participation. These songs are a lot of fun and "PLANET BOOM"is the bomb. Each album since this one,has gotten better and better. It's too bad all the original members are not still together, but as long as Vince is on vocals it usually sounds like true Motley Crue! Tommy is Awesome and he should be there!but we have to give props where props is due Randy Costello is a great drummer and he has worked with the best!(Ozzy)etc. For those who didn't like this album and say Motley can't do it without Tommy-realize that Tommy is on THIS album.

    1 out of 5 stars GIVE ME A BREAK.......1999-11-02

I don't know about anyone else, but I am really sick of NIKKI re-re-releasing all of this old music. It's more than obvious that Vince should be given control of this chaotic band.

        3 out of 5 stars Garden gnomes?.......2001-04-08

I agree with Simon's review about how little support Artillery received from their label. Wow, your sarcasm is on a level of its own.

Anyway, I was introduced to Artillery by an Australian friend (hi, Dave) I knew in Malaysia many years back. It seems that no one around here (Florida, USA) has heard of Artillery...what a shame that such a cutting-edge band (in the mid-'80's) should lie at the bottom of a lake like that.

2 out of 5 stars A shifty album of garage production demo's.......2000-10-20

The recent overwhelming worldwide interest in what has been happening with the very highly visible Artillery, has led their record company to finally release the oft mentioned, but rarely seen, Deadly Relics CD. By now a household name in all communities from Burma to Botswanna, this is an early look at the limp asparagus on paint tins producton values that Artillery dispensed with when recording their first full length album, leaving Sodom to pick up the pieces and run with them.Sodom did in fact run with them, though it is a point of conjecture as to whether running straight down a steep incline into a noisy swamp of crap is a good thing.Artillery, a favourite band of Prince William and Donald Trump, deftly managed their career by combining the releasing of albums of unbridled greatness, with what is known as "Black Hole Publicity" whereby every piece of publicty that accompaied these releases was not only stopped and negated, but 400 other pieces of information completely irrelevant to them was published.Artillery must stand as the one band on the planet who are a dominant force when it comes to knowledge about repairing garden gnomes, taking extended naps in broom closets, and divining water from dry lake beds.

This is a must buy album, if not for the music, for what the album stands for. A flowing,stop-start compilation of jingles and death metal, sure to warm the cockles of your heart.

1 out of 5 stars Brilliant to embarrassing within 6 songs.......2000-10-19

Re-release of Artillery's Demo tapes on CD. Total of 4 demo tapes included. Tracks 2 and 3 are from the 1989 demo for the "By Inheritence" LP and these songs absolutely crank!! Much heavier sound than appeared on the final CD (which was ok). Heaps of energy and trademark insanely heavy and fast riffs with powerful vocals. Tracks 4 and 5 are from the 1985 demo for the "Fear of Tomorrow" LP. These pretty much sound the same as the LP.

The next 8 songs are from demo's from 1984 with their first vocalist. As you'd expect they are pretty rough and immature. The vocals are just plain funny. The music however, shows how these guys were right up there with your Metallica's and Slayer's and way ahead of most other bands of the era.

It was a disappointment that there were no demo's for 1987's classic "Terror Squad", which you should pickup without delay. Also, perhaps get their new CD "B.A.C.K". Riffs, Riffs, Riffs....insane.

5 out of 5 stars For all you Sinners.......2003-10-09

This is a very good Album. I like most of them. Their is a couple that should have been left off but thats alright. So good so bad is pretty bad and Planet boom but the rest Rocks. It is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars "to all rock 'n' roll junkies ~ Motley Crue".......2003-04-09

Hold everything, this sixteen track of "Supersonic & Demonic Relics" is loaded with value for your money for Motley Crue fans. All original music with five new bonus tracks ~ and that's just for starters. Includes an enhanced CD video of "ANARCHY IN THE U.K.", just like being front row center. With some really cool previously unreleased tracks of "SINNERS & SAINTS", "MONTEROUS", "SAY YEAH", "SO GOOD, SO BAD", "MOOD RING" ~ with an extended Holiday version of "HOOLIGANS", this is a classic within a classic. But the rare jewel in this collection is "KNOCK 'EM DEAD, KID", and this just happens to be the original demo. This is like a new album of never before heard Crue tunes, with that cutting edge sound that will ring in your ears for days.
