Rock N Roll [Import]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It may have come a bit late in the day, but producer Phil Spector had done fairly well by the Beatles. His much-criticized salvage job of Let It Be was quickly forgiven in the wake of his production efforts on John Lennon's spare, harrowing Plastic Ono Band album (and the similarly biting singles "Instant Karma" and "Cold Turkey"), its follow-up (and Lennon's best solo album) Imagine, not to mention the overwrought magnificence of George Harrison's All Things Must Pass. Expectations were thus stratospheric when Lennon decided to collaborate with Spector again on this 1975 collection of the ex-Beatle's favorite boyhood rock & roll chestnuts. Beset by well-publicized personal problems and a series of haphazard sessions, the resulting album nevertheless has some fine, emotionally compelling highlights (especially Lennon's stark reading of "Stand By Me"), but the production sometimes sounds thin, rather than spare, and there's often a sense that Lennon is waltzing his way through some of these tracks. Still, it's a treat to hear Lennon pay loving tribute to the songs and artists that inspired his own legend. Jerry McCulley --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Joy.......2007-06-09

Not only does my five year-old son love it, but I do too. I just turned fifty, so I can relate to these songs' heyday. My boy loves them because they're joyfully silly!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!.......2007-05-10

My five year old son and I both enjoy this CD. The songs are oldies but goodies and really get him moving. We've listened to it while stuck in traffic and ended up having a lot of fun! I recognize some of the songs from when I was a kid, like Monster Mash and Chewing Gum, and then there are ones from well before my day like Rockin' Robin.
I highly recommend this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Good Clean Fun!!.......2007-05-07

As a mom, I am always on the lookout for music for my young kids. Our oldest wanted something he could keep in his room to listen to, but so many CDs these days have questionable lyrics. I wanted something he could listen to whenever he wanted. I found it!!

This CD is so much fun for the whole family to listen to...kids, parents, grandparents...everyone will love it! I was amazed that I could get all of these fabulous songs by ORIGINAL ARTISTS on one CD for this price! Usually, you will pay this much for music done by immitation artists. This was great! The kids thought so many of these songs were funny...Yakkity Yak; Splish, Splash!; Willie & the Hand Jive. We all had a few laughs and some very funny dancing. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!!

5 out of 5 stars Kids and adults will love this.......2006-08-17

A lot of the classic Rock and Roll songs of the late 1950s-early 1960s on this album. This is a great album to introduce to young kids and adults who love classic rock and roll songs.

4 out of 5 stars Toddlers Love Rock 'n' Roll.......2006-01-30

I purchased this CD for my 18 month old twins who absolutely just love it! It's great music for family gatherings because the old and young alike can enjoy singing and dancing along to it.

3 out of 5 stars Where's Kind Of A Drag?.......2002-05-20

I bid on this one and purchased it based on the song listing provided. Kind Of A Drag by The Buckinghams is NOT ON THIS CD no matter what the song listing says! Even the photo of the CD cover does not have it listed. Only is the actual song listing on the sight the one that lists this missing song. Bummer!

5 out of 5 stars it's a happening.......2001-12-04

all the original songs in stereo
Little bit of soul actually sounds dated for '67 should be like '64
Soul Man,the great screetching sound(the blues brothers did a version of soul man)
Incense and Peppermints-what do the words mean?groovy man, cool psychedelic tune
Gimme Some Lovin'-another 'soul' song i think its steve winwood in the band
I Think We're Alone Now-another tommy james hit, children behave!
Happy Together, the turtles big hit that everyone was singing that year, classic pop style harmonies
Windy i used to think it was wendy for years, but another fine harmony by the association
Groovin' the rascals slow summertime ballad
the Letter- i think the 1st song to have airplane sound effects
Respect hmmm aretha's sock it to me anthem
if you want to hear some songs from '67 this is a good way to know them for the year, they were all popular and had good pop crafted tunes that are easy to listen to ,you still hear them on oldies stations as a regular playlist.

Recorded live in 1973, Rock N Roll Animal is Reed's glam-rock sneer back at his Velvet Underground legacy. Four tracks are VU classics (two about the redemptive power of rock, two about the transformative power of dope) dressed up into slick, flashy twin-guitar noodle-fests, with big riffs and showboating solos and Reed practically phoning in his vocals. It was something of a hit at the time, and it's easy to hear how the simple forcefulness of these songs sounded good on early-1970s radio. But Reed doesn't bother to conceal his contempt for the commercial trappings he's put on his songs--"Heroin," in particular, turns from savage ambivalence into an easy cartoon--and the album's hard to like now. Two previously unissued tracks from 1973's Berlin-"How Do You Think It Feels" and "Caroline Says I"-flesh out this reissue version of the original LP. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars This is Rock 'n Roll!.......2007-06-27

Yeah, I know it's Alice Cooper's live band - who do you think Alice learned it from? The intro to "Sweet Jane" is every garage band's dream. I have this on vinyl - I'm digitizing it as I type this - and this is the sound of the dark side of getting high and walking on the wild side - and it's live! One of the best live albums, from a musician who put his soul into it. You want formula? You won't get it here.

5 out of 5 stars Lou Reed's Finest.......2007-06-27

This is music from his earlier releases and I believe this is Lou Reed at his best ever. A collector item to have.

4 out of 5 stars My first Reed album.......2007-05-29

Took the advice of other reviewers to buy this as an intro to Lou Reed. The guitar work on this album is simply amazing. Every track features some excellent loud engaging jams. I was disappointed, however, in the lyrics for the album. Reed seemed to lack energy on most of the tracks (could be partially due to his style) especially in 'Rock and Roll' I felt the studio versions would be much better lyrically, but as far as the overall performance of the band, I thought this CD was superb.

5 out of 5 stars ULTIMATE ROCK TWIST FIX.......2007-04-12

Was actually listening to a little Velvet Underground the other night with some peeps, and we got to talking about them. I personally have always enjoyed some of the stuff they did, but have never considered them to be as great as others make them out to be. The banana peel album is pretty cool, real trippy like.. other albums are iffy (though I will say there are goods on them). And what about Lou Reed in general? eh. Solo stuffs not my favorite.
Rock and Roll Animal though... This disc rocks the face off the whole VU, Lou Reed thing entirely. If these tunes could be heard once and only once, I would make damn sure that these versions were the ones to be heard.
It's not as trippy sounding as the original versions.. the band is very skilled, like a quality jam band would be. Lou Reed sounds like he took more dope than ever tonight, but he uses it to his advantage. He's right on the money. This is what you want to feel when you do Lou Reed. Dark, and twisted up. Raw, dirty guitars. The songs work together in a whole different way than before to take a on new life... its a rock and roll classic, that many have tried to acheive, but no one has matched.
Think Ziggy Stardust? Sorry Bowie, not even close.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-03-28

This Album, "Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J." is such a great album! It features nine great songs from The Boss, Bruce Springsteen. Blinded by the light is one of the best Bruce Springsteen songs out there. I reccomend ths album 100%.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars........2007-03-13

preceding, as it did, his worldwide fame, and a string of classic albums, this album tends to get shortchanged in the history of rock and roll. no, it is not a match for such masterworks as "the wild, the innocent, & the e street shuffle," "born to run," "darkness on the edge of town," "nebraska," or "we shall overcome: the seeger sessions," but this is an outstanding debut nonetheless. sure, it is a bit verbose, and, yes, perhaps he did dip into a rhyming dictionary a tad to freely, but all in all this is a very fine set of songs. the exuburance of "blinded by the light" is pure joy, while "growin' up" is a classic song that stands with the best of springsteen's songs. "lost in the flood," "for you," "spirit in the night," and "it's hard to be a saint in the city" are all fantastic. listen, and if you disagree: try to write a song of your own, and see if you can better these. also of note, the quiet ballad "the angel," which has an appearance by the great acoustic bass player, richard davis (who performed such timeless musical magic on van morrison's "astral weeks" album). give this album a break, it is not springsteen's best, but it's excellent all the same.

5 out of 5 stars AMG Review.......2007-02-24

Bruce Springsteen's debut album found him squarely in the tradition of Bob Dylan: folk-based tunes arranged for an electric band featuring piano and organ (plus, in Springsteen's case, 1950s-style rock & roll tenor saxophone breaks), topped by acoustic guitar and a husky voice singing lyrics full of elaborate, even exaggerated imagery. But where Dylan had taken a world-weary, cynical tone, Springsteen was exuberant. His street scenes could be haunted and tragic, as they were in "Lost in the Flood," but they were still imbued with romanticism and a youthful energy. Asbury Park painted a portrait of teenagers cocksure of themselves, yet bowled over by their discovery of the world. It was saved from pretentiousness (if not preciousness) by its sense of humor and by the careful eye for detail that kept even the most high-flown language rooted. Like the lyrics, the arrangements were busy, but the melodies were well developed and the rhythms, pushed by drummer Vincent Lopez, were breakneck. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

BRUCE is my favorite - everything he does is fantastic!

3 out of 5 stars (2.5 stars) work backwards to this one.......2006-11-17

I'm sorry, but I don't see what the big deal about Greetings is. It's an OK record, just not a good one. It's certainly far from traditional Bruce, mainly made up of spare, folky, stream-of-conscousness (definitly spelled wrong) ballads that work (the haunting Lost in the Flood; Blinded by the Light and Spirit in the Night, both of which feature great sax from Clarence Clemons) as often as they fail (The Angel; Mary Queen of Arkansas; Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?) Classic Growin' Up isn't bad at all, but much better heard in its Live 1975/85 reading. This version is mediocre by comparison. The same with Saint in the City. That leaves room for four truly great songs (the aforementioned Blinded; Spirit and Flood plus For You). This is his most Dylan-derived release, but my advice is you pick up a couple of REAL Dylan records instead, as well as a few of Bruce's later albums. He shows pontential here, but he still had a LONG way to go.

4 out of 5 stars It's Only R N R & The Stones Do It So Well.......2007-05-21

Just another solid effort from the Stones with the rockers and ballads. The latest album from them, that I have decided to add to my collection. The classics and the not-so-familiar ones.It has the classics,If You Can't Rock Me,Ain't Too Proud To Beg & It's Only R N R. I have discovered some new ones too.Mainly hearing them from alternate radio. Those are Till The Next Goodbye,Dance Little Sister and If You Really Want To be My Friend, the latter, being my newest discovery. If you want to discover new classics, perhaps this album may be the one for you.it was for me.If you are a Stones fanatic, you probably know them.If you are casual, you will make a major discovery.Buy it and you will not regret it....

4 out of 5 stars solid rock.......2007-05-07

Even though I'm giving this album a 4 rating, it's more like 3.5. I'm totally serious when I say my least two favorite tracks on this album are the title song (which was never interesting to me) and their version of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg". The rest of the album rules, though.

My favorites would be "Luxury" with its beautiful vocal melody, and the more emotional tunes such as "Time Waits for No One" and "If You Really Want to Be My Friend". Also on the album are short catchy little rockers ("Dance Little Sister" and "Short and Curlies"). The album closes with a really good groove rocker called "Fingerprint Files" and I mine as well mention that the album opens with the perfect hard rockin' "If You Can't Rock Me".

Also worth mentioning is that the piano playing throughout the whole album is the main highlight. I love it. It's the best thing about it, in my opinion. This album catches the Stones between going commercial and sticking with their hard rock roots. The whole "caught in between" period is interesting to me.

An album worth owning? Yes.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars........2007-04-02

This album, like "goats head soup," suffers a bad hand of fate in the chronology of the rolling stones discography. Following closely on the heels of perhaps the greatest recording streak in rock and roll history, the 1968 to 1972 run of "beggars banquet," "let it bleed," and "exile on main street,"this album at first seems a bit weak. But be fair, the perfection of the `68 to `72 years could not last. If removed from the context of its proximity to those masterpieces, "it's only rock and roll," is an outstanding album. "If you can't rock me," "it's only rock `n roll," and "dance little sister," are three excellent rock numbers. "Time waits for no one" is a great, beautiful ballad. The reggae inflections juxtaposed with hard rock power chords on "luxury," equates to a pure piece of fun, and the gritty funk of "Fingerprint file," is another success. Even the seemingly tossed off piece of boogie fluff, "short and curlies," is listenable in its own slightly cheesy way. Throughout the record keith richards and mick taylor provide fine guitar licks, and jaggers vocals are effortly expressive, whether emoting cynicism, aggression, or just plain old swagger. This is a fine and fun rock and roll record. Any band should be proud to have made such a thing. And I would highly recommend that you pick up a copy. Makes a wonderful addition to any household.

5 out of 5 stars Under-rated Stones Album--Give it a Listen.......2007-03-06

This is my favorite Stones album for sheer listening pleasure. It may not be as weighty or as blues-based as some of their other work, but it strikes a chord with me every time I listen to it. The songs are extremely good, with the rich, layered sound found on albums featuring guitar virtuoso Mick Taylor. After Taylor's departure, the Stones' music has a leaner, edgier sound. There's nothing at all wrong with that, but Taylor's melodic ear contributed so much to the Stones' music when he was with them.
'Time Waits for No One' is a masterpiece on many levels, as is 'Till the Next Goodbye', plus the album has the additional classic 'It's Only Rock and Roll". Many of the songs are less known, but are equal to the Stones' great works that preceded and followed this album. There is a nice mix of hard rock, blues, ballad, reggae, and humor.
Sure, the Stones did edgier work, but this one is just plain fun to listen to and never seems to wear out its welcome on my turntable.
Five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Underappreciated, Underrated and Pure Stones.......2006-12-28

Okay, there are a couple fillers, all found on side two: Luxury is a half-serious reggae sendup that really, really sucks; If You Really Want to Be My Friend, an overlong, dull ballad; Dance Little Sister is too repetitive for me, and Short and Curlies is a filler, a failed attempt to recapture the smutty brilliance of songs like Brown Sugar and Let It Bleed. But hey, this is a great album, all things considered, especially considering its predecessor was Goats Head Soup, arguably the Stones' worst ever; everybody's heard the title song, and it rocks; same for Ain't too Proud to Beg, a Tempts cover that's a radio staple; and If You Can't Rock Me, a live favorite. But there's more to this album than those: Till the Next Goodbye has got to be the most underrated Stones song EVER, a melancholy, slightly country-tinged ballad that really deserves more recognition than it gets - same for the whole album, actually. Time Waits for No One has one of my favorite guitar solos ever on it, I'd go out a limb and say it's Mick T's best ever, though there's some stiff competition (Sway, for instance). And Fingerprint File is pretty funky and paranoid, sort of proto-Talking Heads; and those lyrics, man... after Bushie's spying job on so-called "terrorists", they're still relevant today, no?
Okay, this ain't first-rate Stones. But if you've heard the classics, and want more (I couldn't blame you), go here.

Ryan Adams records have traditionally kept his sound in the alt-country box that the prolific artist has mastered producing nine records by the age of 32. Rock N Roll is a noteable exception being a complete 180 from other Adams records resulting in a piece of alt rock heaven that emanates a sense of creative freedom.

Apparently after completing the Love Is Hell album, Lost Highway asked Adams to give them something more marketable. Instead of going all George Micheal and whining (or suing the record company), Adams jumped into the record studio and happily churned out Rock N Roll.

Whereas other genre pieces by Adams (Jacksonville City Nights raw country sound comes to mind) seemed to suffer from a rushed effort, Rock N Roll is greatly aided by it. Rock isn't the most complicated music as loud guitars, smashing drums and energetic vocals have produced many great tunes. For someone like Adams it is then the perfect world to romp through as meaty electric guitar riffs churn out song after song with great success. Whether it's the sly romp Note to Self Don't Die or the chunky riff that erupts into Shallow each tune on Rock N Roll carries an infectious spirit. As if the artist found the angered energy at the heart of many great rock songs a welcome distraction from his previous countrified tunes of broken hearts.

On Rock N Roll, Adams keeps it simple allowing him to conger up sounds that seem to pay homage to rock idols such as Oasis, AC/DC and Seattle grunge bands. Due to the genre's straightforward style, Adams doesn't churn out perfected choruses or tender moments, he doesn't have to. Instead Adams simply rips through tune after electrified tune allowing the free spirit at the center of this prolific artist to burst into a frenzied rock n roll love fest.

It's like Adams saw the opportunity to record Rock N Roll as probably his only chance to tear out a raw piece of electrified energy. Therefore the album is aided by a gleeful love Adams seems to have on display. Now maybe he didn't enjoy making Rock N Roll, but listening to Adams say "everybody do Miss America" in a wry, sarcastic tune, makes it hard to believe that he was not loving every minute of his opportunity to jump into heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Read the name of the CD..........2007-05-27

and that's just what it is. I might dare to say Rock/pop. Who knows, his next album might be "Alt/Rock/Country".
This was my first exposure to Ryan Adams, and I am completely ok with this fact. I am not a Ryan Adams fan, but this and Love is Hell are incredible pieces of work.
Im sure that this CD did not sit well with the true fan base, but for anyone who enjoys good song writing and a good radio single will definately enjoy this. Check out Burning Photographs.

4 out of 5 stars Eat Your Heart Out, Gary Glitter.......2007-04-12

Ok, so Ryan Adams turned his back on Alt-Country. So he happened to borrow (some might say "rip off") the sound of U2 ("So Alive"), The Smiths ("Anybody Wanna Take Me Home"), Nirvana ("Note To Self: Don't Die"), Jackson Browne ("Wish You Were Here"), and Neil Young ("1974"). So what. Big deal. The point is, this album is still a rocker, and serves to show that there's no single definition of Rock 'N Roll music. While very little on this record is uniquely Adams, it's still a keeper since the songs are pretty catchy and they run over 45-minutes. Adams isn't the first person to hastily throw an album together, but he's likely one of the few who haven't regretted that decision in retrospect.

3 out of 5 stars I REALLY wanted to like this album.......2006-09-28

I tried differnt moods, settings, setup, everything to get into Adams' vibe on this disc but I couldn't do it. The other reviews are right, he's rockin' the hell out of this album. The instrumental side is kick-butt and tight as hell. Lyrically this album comes up short. I like to rock out as much as the next guy but my music also means something to me and I couldn't find it here. If you want something to throw in the player at party or rock it on the open highway then this is a solid buy. If you want an album you can hold onto for a while then may I suggest Gold or Demolitions.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Cd I Have Bought So Far.......2006-07-13

I have a friend who used to be a complete metal-head. He was a sworn enemy of folk music. One day he was riding in the car with me, and I just happened to be playing this album. He asked me who it was and went out the next day and bought it. Now we are planning to go see Ryan Adams live in Nashville this August! How amazing is that?! That is one example of how revolutionary Ryan Adams' music really is. He blurs the boundaries between country, alternative, and rock. As for my favorite songs on this cd there are many. "Burning Photographs", "Wish You Were Here", and "Luminol" are my # 1 picks. However, there isn't a song on the album I don't like... except for the one the entire cd is named after. "Rock N' Roll" was a little dull for me after all of the high energy songs produced on this album. Overall though, this album gets an A+ from me. Ryan Adams shows how outstanding he truly is through this cd. This couldn't be better if God himself would have recorded it. HUGE fan of Ryan's work on this one. In a word, phenomenal.

I just picked up this CD today at Wal-Mart in Grand Forks and I loved it. I don't think I've had any other CD in my CD player all afternoon. the songs I liked are "I Love Rock 'n' Roll", "Little Drummer Boy", "Nag", "Louie Louie", as well as others. I highly recommend this CD, especially if you're a fan of rock and roll music like me, even though one of my first loves for music was the Backstreet Boys (giggles). Anyway, I definetly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars Covers Girl.......2006-12-07

Joan Jett's second solo album, I Love Rock 'N Roll, provided her musical identity. The song "I Love Rock 'N Roll" had been recorded in 1976 by an English group called the Arrows as a b-side to one of their singles. Joan saw them play the song on a TV show while on tour with the Runaways, and wanted them to record it. Joan recorded an earlier version on the b-side of one of her solo singles, then re-recorded it in its best-known version, which hit number one on the charts. The black-and-white video was played endlessly on MTV, and the poster for the album was hung on the wall behind the MTV veejays. The album is a classic slice of hard rock bubblegum; Ritchie Cordell and Kenny Laguna mixed Gibson guitars with compressed Gary Glitter-style drums to produce Joan's catchy, hard-edged sound. The late addition of guitarist Ricky Byrd to the sessions gives most of the songs a playful urgency. Crunchy originals ("Love is Pain," "Victim of Circumstance") are blended with rowdy covers ("Nag"- The Halos, "Crimson and Clover"- Tommy James and the Shondells, "Bits and Pieces"- Dave Clark Five, "You're Too Possessive"- Runaways) in a nonstop romp of 80s hard rock that melts in your ears like sugar, sugar.

5 out of 5 stars STRIKES!.......2007-02-21

If you like southern rock or are just wanting to see what the guitarist with Lynyrd Skynyrd sounded like way back when, this could be a disc for you. It's a great price for a ton of music from the 80's, particularly if you are new to Blackfoot. If you already have heard Blackfoot, you might want to get a regular release like "Strikes", "Tomcattin", "Flyin' High", or "No Reservations". All have excellent tracks and for the most part are budget priced. If you enjoy live, you might try "Highway Song - Live". This compilation contains their hits [Wishing Well, Train, Train, Foxhunt, and Highway Song]. Rickey Medlocke and the rest of Blackfoot rocks on this disc. It's a great place to start or a nice disc to toss in a jukebox in the gameroom. Buy with confidence. This is really good!

The most juiced-up Sountern Rock around. Check out the Tango guitar on "Too Hard To Handle" and I always get a kick out of Rick's ole' man. It's a shame that there aren't bands like this around today.

I saw them open for KISS in 76 and they blew me away.
But for some reason I never bought any albums. I never
heard them on the radio. I always thought they were
another Skynrd type band but they are NOT! They are
just kick butt rock and roll! I love it! I love the
live versions so much I wanna get the live album now.
Reminds me of Saxon or UFO live. Awesome. I'm sorry I
didn't listen to them before. Train TRain, Wishing Well,
Queenie and the kickin' Good Morning are just killers!
If you think they are just some southern band think again.
Highly recommended for any hard blues rock fan. Buy Blackfoot!

Album Description

Recorded live at the famous Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco in August 2005, this is The Black Crowes caught at their very best. After taking a break to pursue solo ventures in 2002, their 2005 tour became one of the hottest tickets of the US summer. With a set featuring all their greatest hits, and some stunning acoustic versions, in the middle of a two-and-a-half hour show performed by one of the greatest live bands of all time, this is a concert simply not to be missed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Chris Robinson's Opus!.......2007-03-20

When the Black Crows first hit, Rolling Stone did a very nice review on the band. One of the things Chris Robinson talked about was the live concert done by Humble Pie in the early 70s called "Rocking the Fillmore" where all the crowd noise and talking between Steve Marriot and the crowd was left in the recording. If you haven't gotten this, don't wait any longer. It's one of the best rocking live albums ever done and Chris talked about how much he loved that album and that he wanted to do a live one like it. Well, this is the one. This cd is one of the rockingest most powerfull live albums I've heard in a long time. This is the one he always wanted to make and you need to do yourself a favor and get it because they nailed it .

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Black Crowes Live Album.......2007-03-10

I would love to break it all down and rate each song on this album individually, but there is absolutely no need because every song is awesome. If you are a Black Crowes fan you will not be disappointed. If you are not a Black Crowes fan this album could make you one.

Their sound may be heavily influenced by 70's music, but it is timeless and will survive the ages. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Live Album.......2006-12-30

After picking up their first "live" album a few years back I was very hesitant to purchase this one.

To say the last one was "lacking" would be generous. It was a weak, lazy performance that was recorded and released in poor bootleg quality.

This release redeems any and all faith you've ever had in The Crowes. It's a tight sounding, bluesy, energetic, rocking good show!

The Sound Quality is stellar! If you are a fan of The Black Crowes you need to own this one.

5 out of 5 stars Freaking Good Rock'N'Roll.......2006-11-25

Both DVD and CDs are incredible... Seems after playing with J Page, The Black Crowes found their path back to the freaking good rock'n'roll. There is not a track I dislike in the album, and the DVD quality is amazing. I wish I could have seen them alive, but who knows... another time. You will find everything in the show: R&B, Blues, Rock, Accoustic, duet guitar solos and more...

5 out of 5 stars Just a Great, Great Live Rock n' Roll Album!.......2006-11-03

Freak n' Roll is a 2CD set recorded by the Crowes at the Fillmore in S.F. And just as the Crowes are a great rock band, this is a killer rock disc. While it does contain some of the lesser songs in their catalog (like Only Halfway to Everywhere and Welcome to the Goodtimes), these sound much better in the live setting. Standout cuts include the long jammy versions of Soul Singing, Hard to Handle, the aforementioned Only Halfway to Everywhere, Remedy...hell, the whole disc is a treat. It closes with a great cover of the Night they Drove Ol' Dixie Down.

The band has never sounded better, especially with the return of guitarist Marc Ford...his interplay with Rich Robinson is fantastic...check out the great acoustic duet Sunday Night Buttermilk Waltz. And the band is augmented by a 4 piece horn section and 2 backing singers.

If this is a taste of the Crowes to come (they are working on new material right now) then we are all in for a huge treat!

Conceived at a time when John Lennon was struggling to regain his footing as a solo artist, Rock `n' Roll afforded the hardly ancient ex-Beatles (he was only 33 when work began on the LP) a chance to revisit his Liverpool roots. Feeling nostalgic, Lennon enlisted Phil Spector to guide him through rewordings of tunes from early heroes Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, and Little Richard. Sounds easy enough. Something about the `70s made thirtysomething musicians long for the `50s (around the time Lennon began work on this project, the Band released the all-oldies collection Moondog Matinee) and Lennon certainly had the vocal chops to take on any rocker. The Spector sessions, however, fell apart, producing only four songs that made it to vinyl. Lennon took over production and completed the album the following year, actually helming most of the album's highlights. "Stand by Me" proved to be a perfect dramatic vehicle for Lennon and scored as a single. The likes of "Be-Bop-A-Lula," "Slippin' and Slidin'," and "Just Because" were comfortable fits for "Dr. Winston O'Boogie." And though "Do You Wanna Dance" and "Sweet Little Sixteen" are misbegotten attempts to slow down and reimagine the originals, by any fair gauge, there're are three winners here for every misstep. The remixed and remastered reissue comes with four bonus tracks that rank with the final cuts. Conceived perhaps as something of a stopgap title, Rock `n' Roll has aged well and serves as a tribute not only to the fathers of rock & roll, but to Lennon the vocalist and producer. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Lennon Attitude Sprinkled on Previously Outdated Songs........2007-04-29

I LOVE THIS ALBUM!! Anyone will! These songs were ripped from their vaults, from the pennings of Chuck Berry and the like, to be covered by John Lennon in his cutthroat, raw, and absolutely brilliant vocal style. The "Little Big Horns" that accompany give each track a deservedly unique spin and adds life and dimension to an already exceptional album. A gem like this will never gather dust once it is played--guaranteed.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2006-09-09

It is amazing. I had the album years ago.
If you love early John Lennon, you will love this.

5 out of 5 stars Lennon Lives!.......2006-04-26

"John Lennon - Rock 'N' Roll" . . . John Lennon had an "electrically charged voice" perfect for rock and roll . . . just like the hum and buzz of the amp of an electric guitar, John's voice surged and cut through with a magic that made his music more than memorable.

Lennon recorded the songs he himself loved listening to before he was one of the four "mop tops".

He rocks but he also delivers the slow heart moving ballad laments. My favorite tracks on this collection are "Stand By Me". . . "Do You Wanna Dance" . . . the "Medley: Bring it On Home To Me/Send Me Some Lovin'" . . . and my most favorite song on this album: "Just Because" (which John delivers along with some "commentary" alluding to his own nostalgia for this song - and probably all these songs-)

Yoko Ono has added four bonus tracks by John which fit this album: "Angel Baby" . . . "To Know Him Is To Love Him" . . . "Since My Baby Left Me" and a Reprise of "just Because".

This album is nostalgic . . .it evokes and provokes memories of the original versions of these songs and the memories of where and when we first heard them . . . i'm sure that this was exactly how it was for John Lennon himself as he selected the songs to be recorded and as he sang them in studio. You can "hear" the joy in his voice on more than one track of this collection. And though John is gone, he wil still bring that joy to your own experience of these songs.

Thank you John Lennon for all of the great music you gave us throughout all of your years . . . and thank you for THIS album of what were "oldies" to you . . . and now are classics to us! :)

3 out of 5 stars Happy to have it for the good tracks.......2006-02-11

Sweet Little Sixteen is awful, but the other Spector tracks are pretty good, even with that weird attenuated sound. Otherwise Ya Ya swings pretty good and Do You Wanna Dance? is an effective arrangement. There are some very ineffective arrangements as well, though, particularly the Little Richard numbers and Ain't That a Shame. And it's no surprise that To Know Her is to Love Her got left out once you hear it. It doesn't come close to the version Lennon was singing on the BBC circa 1963. I wish Lennon would have gone with more obscure tunes and less horns and studio gee whiz.

5 out of 5 stars Remasterd and REMIXED - Sounds EXCELLENT.......2005-12-31

I have both the original CD release and this new remixed/remastered disc. I must say, the new mixes are absolutely fantastic. The separation/definition of the instruments and the outstanding treatment of the vocals kick this album's excitement up a notch from the original. No, make that 3 notches. I recommend getting this release even if you already have the first run CD or the vinyl LP as these new mixes make for a far more enjoyable listing experience.
