Surfer Girl may have been the band's third album release, but it was the first to bear the imprimatur of founder and creative mainstay Brian Wilson as producer, and the difference is palpable from the confident opening tracks onward. That one-two combo, "Surfer Girl" and "Catch a Wave," also effectively serves as the blueprint for much of the Beach Boys' subsequent sound. On the former, Wilson's falsetto soars over a tender, yet musically sophisticated, ballad, while the latter features Mike Love's trademark twang urgently proselytizing SoCal surf, both over band harmonies that seemed to grow tighter and more adventurous with every cut. That artistic axis is revisited yet again on "Little Deuce Coupe" and "In My Room," the latter ballad showcasing Wilson's full artistic arsenal and giving an early glimpse into his introspective soul. The curiously titled "Shut Down, Part II" (a de facto sequel to an earlier hit EP) sought to further the band beyond its ironic sea-and-sun fetish (none but Dennis Wilson ever surfed) into the burgeoning hot-rod subculture as well. The results were understandably uneven, but the high points remain nothing short of spectacular, including the Love-propelled "Fun, Fun, Fun," Wilson's knowing nod to Phil Spector, "Don't Worry Baby," and the underrated "The Warmth of the Sun." Bonus cuts include the single mix of "Fun, Fun, Fun," a German-language version of "In My Room," and the previously unreleased, largely experimental "I Do" by Wilson and Love. Brian offers up a brief commentary on both albums in the notes, while David Leaf (author of the pioneering bio The Beach Boys and the California Myth) documents the music track-by-track. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A Classic, Back Again (Good As New!).......2007-03-01

It's easy after all these years to forget the brilliance of Brian Wilson's vision. These two albums gave the first hint of just how bold that vision was, how far it might go.

5 out of 5 stars Great Albulms.......2007-02-23

Surfer Girl is really a great piece of work. Brian Wilson did a great job in the composition of the songs and they sound great in stereo ( In Sounds of Summer you only get these songs in mono) Shut Down Vol. 2 is alright album with some good songs as well ( Don't Worry Baby in stereo)I highly recommend this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Brian's genius starts here.......2007-01-30

The oldest Wilson's talent is already peeking through the clouds on Surfer Moon, Warmth Of The Sun, Keep An Eye On Summer. They are all worth the price of admission for this cd, it's worth sitting through the filler for these 3 masterpieces of surf angst.

5 out of 5 stars The songs are great , the quality is great and the booklet's great!.......2006-01-02

This Album Was About The Tenth Album They Ever Released. Shut Down Volume 2 was actually the 5th album they ever released and Surfer Girl the third about. Brian Made Surfer Girl, the song, while he was driving to a hot dog stand, and he wrote down the notes and words when he got home. And when G. Usher and B. Wilson wrote "In My Room" Brian's Dad said to G. Usher: "Good work, Usher." And G. Usher says that was the nicest thing B. Wilson's dad had said to him ever. My Favorite song is "Hawaii," which happens to be number 8 on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Two early classics full of surf and car songs.......2005-04-08

This twofer pairs the third and fifth albums recorded by the Beach Boys. Their fourth album, a themed collection of car songs, contains four songs (including the title track) previously released on earlier albums and was therefore put on a different twofer to avoid duplication on the same CD.

The first album here, Surfer girl, yielded the double-sided American hit featuring the title track and Little deuce coupe, plus a further American hit, In my room. The second album here, Shut down volume 2, yielded two further American hits, Fun fun fun (though the album version differs slightly from the single version, added as a bonus track to this twofer) and Don't worry baby. None of these songs charted in Britain, which was gripped by Beatle mania at the time. However, Brits eventually came to love the music of the Beach Boys and these songs are now regarded as classics on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Surfer girl album is the stronger of the two albums here, with seven of the twelve songs being surfing music, of which I particularly like the title track, Hawaii and Catch a wave. Shut down volume 2 starts strongly with the two American hits and contains another outstanding track (Warmth of the sun) and covers of Why do fools fall in love and Louie Louie It is a fine album in its own way but not quite as strong overall as Surger girl.

Three bonus tracks include the single version of Fun fun fun, a version of In my room recorded in German and a previously unreleased recording of a song, I do, that the Beach Boys wrote for the Castells.

If you enjoy the early music of the Beach Boys, you will find plenty to get excited about here.

4 out of 5 stars One very good cd.......2001-08-20

I like these two albums very much. The reasons to buy them are for the filler. You can find most of the hits on any greatest hits package, but at least here they are in stereo and sound beautiful. Surfer Girl is probably the better album. With songs like "Hawaii", "Catch A Wave", "In My Room", and the title song how can you go wrong? "Surfer's Rule" is also an alright song with Dennis Wilson on vocals. Listen for the attack on The Four Seasons at the end of the song.

Shut Down Volume II has a few hits like "Fun,Fun,Fun", "Don't Worry Baby", and "The Warmth of The Sun" all of which are in stereo. The real reason to listen to this album, though, is for "In The Parkin' Lot", "Keep An Eye on Summer", "Pom Pom Playgirl", and my personal favorite "Cassius Love VS Sonny Wilson". Those four tracks are the heart of the album. The rest are just useless covers, and instrumentals.

The bonus tracks on this collection don't do much for me. "I Do" is an alright song. The single version of "Fun,Fun,Fun" has a more in your face instrumental part, and longer fade, but Mike sounds much better in the multi-tracked album version. "In My Room" in German is worth about one good listen. Unless, of course, you understand German.

In conclusion, I'd recommend this album to anyone in search of more musical knowledge on The Beach Boys.

5 out of 5 stars REMEDY FOR AN ENDLESS WINTER.......2000-11-19

An AMERICAN under 50 without a BEACH BOYS album it's impossible is it?I know your argument;why buy an original(it's actually 2 in this case)when i can buy a two set collection?i'll tell you why, because its worth it.This one is priceless because BRIAN finds his own turf here,he is as we say coming through after the first two albums that served as his apprenticeship.Along with their masterpiece PET SOUNDS and SUMMER DAYS AND SUMMER NIGHTS(also available one 1cd)it's an essential from these guys. Each march i play that cd in the hope that winter will finally end.It helps a little to support the freezing rain.

4 out of 5 stars Brian's Songwriting Matures On These Early Albums.......2000-06-24

This is the Beach Boys' third and fifth albums Surfer Girl (September 1963) and Shut Down, Vol. 2 (March 1964), released during a two-year period which saw the release of eight albums! Because of Capitol's pressure on the band to release product to keep up with their labelmates the Beatles, these early albums would contain a certain amount of filler--songs like "South Bay Surfer" (which sounds suspiciously like "Swanee River") is corny at best, "The Rocking Surfer" is a competent but mundane instrumental (both from Surfer Girl), the studio chatter of "'Cassius' Love Vs. 'Sonny' Wilson" is only mildly interesting to hear once and what's the point of a two-minute drum solo from a solid but uninspired drummer? [Even Ringo waited until Abbey Road, and his drum solo lasted only fifteen seconds--brevity can be the esence of art.]

Now with the negatives out of the way, there is much to enjoy here. For starters, Brian was now officially producing the albums. And while surfing ("Surfer Girl") and cars ("Little Deuce Coupe" and "Fun, Fun, Fun") would still provide the hits, Brian was expanding his writing subjects to include more serious subject matter like the gorgeous "In My Room," which even though it was released as the b-side to "Be True To Your School," it reached No. 23. As a bonus track you also get their German version of the song. In the same vein is one of Brian's most beautiful songs ever, "Don't Worry Baby." [Again, buried on the b-side of "I Get Around," it still managed to reach No. 24.] Then there's the melancholy "The Warmth of the Sun," which the liner notes indicate Brian wrote after the breakup with his first serious girlfriend and within hours of the JFK assassination. Brian was flexing his creative muscles and proving that there could be more to music than hot rods and surfing.

Dennis turns in a terrific vocal performance on "Surfers Rule." "The Surfer Moon" in addition to featuring a lovely vocal by Brian also marks the first use of a string arrangement by the Beach Boys. There are only two non-originals (both from Shut Down, Vol. 2). There's the terrific "Wall of Sound" production of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" and their take on the garage band classic "Louie Louie."

Of the bonus cuts you also get the single version of "Fun, Fun, Fun" and the previously unreleased "I Do," a song Brian originally produced for the Castells. This version uses the original backing track with the Beach Boys vocals dubbed in.

All told, this is amazing music from a time in the Beach Boys career when they were still growing musically, and this two-fer allows you a first-hand look at that growth. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous reissue of two Beach Boy classics.......2000-06-09

Capitol ignored and mistreated the Beach Boys catalog for so many years, it was truly amazing when they reissued all of their albums as 2-fers with bonus tracks and extensive liner notes. Of course, it was only a matter of time until the regime changed and the 2-fers were deleted, as they now are in the USA. Rumor has it they'll be reissued, but for the time being you have to pick them up as imports.

Surfer Girl and Shut Down Vol. 2 represent prime mid-period Beach Boys. It's more sophisticated than the first pair of albums, with more assured and complex productions, but retains the simpler song topics that marked the early years.

Brian Wilson's arrangements and the Beach Boys singing was already beyond comparison by the time of these two LPs. Even the themes of girls and cars are lent tremendous import by their masterful touch, whether its yearning ballads like "Surfer Girl" and "Don't Worry Baby," the braggadocio and pride of "Little Deuce Coupe" or "Our Car Club," the contemplation of "In My Room," or the sheer glee of "Fun, Fun, Fun."

Sleepers like "Your Summer Dream" and "The Warmth of the Sun" show the direction that Wilson would ultimately take, with sophisticated melodies and chord changes that moved away from his surf roots.

Two brilliant albums, remastered in sparkling sound and augmented with three bonus tracks. Hard to imagine a more worthwhile CD purchase.

5 out of 5 stars another great cd.......2000-06-03

The firsat album Surfer girl was great, i love every song on here. this is yet another great album. the only sad thing about this album is this is when david L. Marks left. Down with Al Jardine. Shut down Part 2 was a great album, there are no bad songs on here, the only bad part about this album is the fact that Al Jardine is a part of the band again.

This is one the best of The Beach Boys early albums, their 3rd LP in fact. But get the import of this albums paired up with another Beach Boys albums "Shut Down, Vol. 2" from the year after instead. That CD has both albums IN STEREO - this Japanese CD is mono. Plus that CD comes with a great booklet and cover art, etc. Forget the album-style slipcase. The other CD collection has 2 albums for the price of 1, is in stereo, and has great packaging. Get that one instead while it lasts and forget this version.

ess Release: April 2005 Jen Kravassi's back and she's in the studio again. The record "Parallel Lines" is due to hit shelves on May 28th just in time for the summer. This is great news for her 40,000 plus fan base who already know her from her previous CD "Road Song." In production at Master Sound Studios, "Parallel Lines" is a mainstream influx of hot alternative rock with jazz and incredibly, yes, even a cross over country tune or two. "... I just wanted to tap in to parts of my songwriting I hadn't presented before to the audience. It's feel good rock, and deep sounds that I hope people respond to..." stated Jen at a March interview. Along with its release, she'll begin a summer nationwide tour with her band. Look for updates and venues in '24/7 Live', right here on the site. Pre-orders on "Parallel Lines" should begin in early May and a mega-release party is coming soon!! Don't Miss It!!

              Customer Reviews:

              1 out of 5 stars BAD MIXING!!!.......2007-02-26

I can't explain it any easier than... When your head is stopped up and your ears are muffled, that's what this cd sounds like! There are two versions of ooh pah poo doo on the album, the first sounds like a needle drop in the first few seconds and the second is just plain BAD! Too bad since DEL FI is usually good with their other oldie collections!
