first off: make sure that you get the 2002 ABKCO remastered version of this album. Same goes for all the early stones recordings. The original cd versions had very inferior sound. The ABKCO remasters, on the other hand, are spectacular in sound. The bass is deep and powerful, and the guitars are so vibrant and clear, they sound like they are being played live right in your living room. As for the album at hand ("Now"), this was the stones 3rd record, and their finest up to this point. The record sports three excellent rockers: "everybody need somebody to love," "down the road apiece," and "oh baby (we got a good thing going)." a couple of great blues tunes: the funky, "down home girl," and their raw and fantastic version of "little red rooster," with wonderful slide guitar. My favorite track happens to be their haunting reworking of the bo diddley song "Mona," with its interesting rhythm and an outstanding vocal from jagger. The album also has the first jagger/richards penned hit: the pretty ballad "heart of stone," which made its way into the american top 20. A winner all the way, this is early rolling stones music at its best.

The first really good album from the Rolling Stones.......2007-03-15

This was a really good album once I got passed the long winded openers Everybody Needs Somebody to Love and Down Home Girl. They aren't bad, just a little long for my taste, but then comes a string of pearls...You Can't Catch Me, Heart of Stone, What a Shame, Mona, Down the Road a Piece and finally Off the Hook. Then came the rather flat, Pain in My Heart, but, then the album gets back on track with with three gems, Oh Baby (We Got a Good Thing Goin'), Little Red Rooster and Surprise, Surprise. If you like the Stones, but don't own their early works, this one is worth getting.

Enjoyable, but far from great.......2007-02-23

Like most of the other early Stones albums, there's good music here, but not enough of it. A couple excellent singles: Little Red Rooster is by far the best of their early blues covers, thanks to Brian's slide and harp and Mick's dead-on bluesman vocals; and Heart of Stone, a sullen R&B-infused rocker. A few of the originals here are derivative lyrically, but still fun: What a Shame is packed to the brim with clever hooks; Off the Hook has an entertaining harmonica part, and Surprise Surprise is pretty much all Charlie. That guy could drum, all right, why did he never take a solo? Anyway, Mona is also a solid tune, one of their best (and most underrated) early covers. As usual, though, I can't really speak for much of the rest: There's a good reason why songs like Everybody Needs Somebody to Love; Down Home Girl; You Can't Catch Me and the ridiculously over-the-top Pain in My Heart disappeared like they did. So there's filler galore here, but patient Stones fans will find a lot to like aobut Now!

This was the Rolling Stones third album. It features four original songs and eight covers of old rock and roll, R&B and blues songs. This is another outstanding album by the group. The covers (some of which are pretty obscure) are all excellent. And the four originals showcase the emerging songwriting talents of Mick Jagger & Keith Richards. In the UK, the Howlin' Wolf song "Little Red Rooster" was the single from the album, and it shot all the way up to #1 on the charts. In the US, the original song "Heart of Stone" was the single, and it reached #19 on the charts. Every Rolling Stones fan should have this CD.

Rolling Ahead 40 Years: Now! is Classic!.......2006-10-12

"The Rolling Stones Now!," recorded during 1964, was the Stones third (U.S.) album in less than a year and remains, to these ears, their richest and most rewarding 'early' album (by 'early' I refer to the group's first five, all distinguished by noirish cover art, each containing a mix of original material and covers). The debut, "England's Newest Hitmakers" is faster and more furious, and opens with the Stones' definitive statement of purpose, 'Not Fade Away.' And "12 X 5" features two glorious early hit singles, "It's All Over Now" and "Time Is On My Side" (how prescient those classics sound today!) and several gems recorded at Chess studios in Chicago, now, since Abkco's upgrade of the Stones 1963 - 70 catalog, presented in beautiful real stereo. But "Now!" - the exclamatory title conveys immediacy, a demand for attention - while lacking any hits other than the dark 'Heart Of Stone,' (which peaked at # 19 in 'Billboard') - is crafted to feel more leisurely, the sort of album you can play regularly for years and still find some new musical detail or emotional nuance. The songs are getting longer, the grooves deeper, more deliberate; there is a perfect balance of classic interpretations and superb originals (their best to date) that represent the emerging Jagger/Richards worldview, which is remarkably mature and keenly articulate considering that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were only 21, Charlie Watts and Brian Jones 23, and Bill Wyman 28 years old at the time of the album's release.
The Stones avoid obvious commercial concessions and instead take the listener via a tour de force through their romantic, wry, bemused, open-hearted, witty, sexy, and very funky conception of America (especially the American South), with material dating from the early 1940s into the '60s by Howlin Wolf, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett, Nat King Cole, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Barbara Lynn, and The Coasters (or possibly Alvin Robinson). And, "Now!" works as an aural equivilant of Chuck Berry's hot-rod trip described in "You Can't Catch Me" (which nobody could, of course) with its big full moon rising up above and New Jersey Turnpike In The Wee Wee Hours, and of course the inevitable state patrol on their collective trail....
This classic starts off by accident, happily, with the 'wrong' version (wrong for "No. 2" but right for "Now!") of "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love," sung with conviction but, typically, no sentimentality, a vocal whose mannerisms seem barely perceptable, so offhand is this take with its fleet bassline, driving drums and rhythm guitar half-hidden in the mix by the jangle of tambourines, and Keith's darting guitar punctuation. "Down Home Girl" could have sound forced, but Mick pulls it off with understated bemusement and delight as the band lopes along for nearly four-and-a-half funky minutes in their London-meets-New Orleans groove. Then a ride in that brand new souped up aeromobile Berry so poetically evokes, and that the Stones drive with casual aplomb. Bo's "Mona" is so deep and ferocious (you must blast this one at maximum volume) you can get lost in it, visions of Brian's orchestral jangle in the reverb and Jerome Green in the percussion, and for my money the utterly unurried yet intense pace of this masterpiece fits way better on "Now!" than on the U.K. edition of the Stones' debut. "What A Shame" is a Chess recording of an excellent original blues that Arthur Lee stole virtually word for word on Love's debut, a song of nothing ever going right that swings along brilliantly, Brian and Keith sparring and jabbing, Bill (perhaps along with Brian and Stu the most accomplished musician from the very start of the band) effortlessly adding tasty basslines, with one of several fine (even essential, in this context) performances from 'sixth Stone,' pianist Ian Stewart. Another original, "Heart Of Stone" is hard and dark (as dark as Andrew Loog Oldham's post-"Cockwork Orange" liner notes), a passionate antecedent to "Paint It, Black." (The theme is echoed in the album's fine closer, "Surprise, Surprise," and influenced a whole sub-genre of '60s garage punk).
The second half (or side, if you ever had the London-label vinyl) brings us back to 1941 with a thrilling "Down The Road Apiece" (the song really does become airborne from the first instrumental break!), through an audacious remake/remodel of Howlin' Wolf's "Little Red Rooster" in which Mick makes no attempt to replicate the awesome menace of Wolf's vocal, instead introducing a more feline, lithe, and utterly confident interpretation that is exquisitely complimented by Brian's haunting, fluttery, yet lethal slide guitar. A solid version of the Allen Toussaint-penned 'Pain In My Heart' (with Jack Nitzsche on piano) is perhaps the only track that's less than revelatory. One that certainly is would be 'Oh Baby (We Got A Good Thing Goin'),' which fits together with J/R's 'Off The Hook' (and other early gems like 'One More Try') in stating a rarely emphasized Stones theme: of committment (even sacrifice), to the hard work required of relationships, real pleasure, and, implicitly, to the project that is The Rolling Stones.
It rocks, it swings, and sings of movement, lust, assurance, power, and making things work out. "The Rolling Stones, Now!" is quintessential, classic Stones and thus rock and roll.

The guitar work, the way Brian and Keith weave their way through this record, is a joy to listen to and reason enough to own it, never mind the fine songs. I really like that they've included the long version of "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" rather than the much shorter single version, because it's a song I really like. Rolling Stone Magazine lists this record as number 181 on their list of the best five hundred records ever made. I'd probably put it in my top hundred. This is the third Stones album to come out in the States and once again they rock down the house with a Chuck Berry number "You Can't Catch Me," but the real gem on this record is their cover version of Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster." The numbers written by Mick and Keith are pretty darned good too. Brian Jones is amazing, simply amazing, as is this must own masterpiece.

This is the lowest-charting studio album released for the US market in the history of the Rolling Stones. Though reaching #5 is commendable, the consumer was in want of something fresh to bite into, and this album did not offer much. The Stones were well aware of their situation, and promptly dealt with it from this point forward. As the first top-twenty single in the US written by Jagger/Richards, Heart of Stone made it's album debut as track #4. The amount of eventual B-sides outnumbered the hit singles on this release. Though listed as running under three (3) minutes, the opening track Everybody Needs Somebody to Love is actually over five (5) minutes in length. You Can't Catch Me was listed as running four (4) minutes and thirty (30) seconds but is actually over three (3) minutes and forty (40) seconds. What A Shame was the b-side to Heart of Stone and the first Jagger/Richards penned blues song. It was released on The Rolling Stones No. 2 with Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, Down Home Girl, You Can't Catch Me, Down The Road Apiece, Off The Hook, and Pain In My Heart. Oh! Baby (We Got A Good Thing Going) was released in the UK on Out Of Our Heads with Heart of Stone. Mona (I Need You Baby) was releaed in the UK on The Rolling Stones the year before. Little Red Rooster was released the next year on the UK Big Hits (High Tide an Green Grass). Surprise, Surprise was released as a single with Street Fighting Man in 1968. It wasn't released on an LP until 1973 on No Stone Unturned.
So once you have this, sit down and listen to it...NOW!

ABKCO FINDS TRUE STEREO GEMS!.......2004-05-27

I was hugely disappointed with most of the early ABKCO Rolling Stones "remasters" on CD (What? "Between The Buttons" in MONO? And what SOUNDS like 3rd Generation MONO, at that). I was AMAZED when I played "The Rolling Stones NOW" to find that Abkco used TRUE STEREO MASTERS of "Down The Road Apiece, What A Shame, and Heart Of Stone!" That alone is worth the price of the disc!

Time tripping.......2002-10-25

A British LP with these songs on it was my first exposure to the Rolling Stones. A friend of my sister's was brought it by her father, an airline pilot. There is every reason to believe that this was the first Stones LP to be played in Israel. I got it because my sister's friend didn't like it. It was unintelligible to me at first. The music ambiance there and then was Israeli folk music, or pre-Beatles, post Elvis: Cliff Richards, The Searchers; ballads. It was so unlike anything Israelis or the expatriate community had been exposed to that it might as well have come from the moon. We had no idea that the songs were covers of blues songs; we had never heard them sung by the original artists. It was like, decades later, the impact of Asleep At the Wheel on a public that was too young to have heard of the Sons of the Pioneers. So the Stones actually preceded the Beatles into the nascent pop music scene in Israel that emanated from the American International School in Kfar Smariahu and was immortalized in the 70s by Danny Sanderson's Lahakat HaKaveret. My best friend left it on bus one day, and I looked for a replacement for over 35 years. Everybody Needs Somebody to Love never made it to any of the stateside editions, and became the Holy Grail for those of us wishing to relive the moment we "got it". Had it not been for the song's appearance in Animal House, I would have begun to doubt its existence. My daughter found this CD on line last year. I was almost afraid to play it; fearing that the memory was greater than the actuality. I need have feared not. With the first notes of Everybody Needs Somebody to Love, I was on my feet. Wonderful. For me the first few albums and 45s the Stones put out before 1967 will always be the high water mark of rock and roll. In those days the only competition was the Beatles, and the Stones were winning. A truly essential album.

underrated classic.......2002-07-24

THIS IS AN ALBUM LOADED WITH OBSCURE GREAT SONGS THAT NEVER GOT RADIO AIRPLAY.EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY TO LOVE DOWN THE ROAD APIECE,SURPRISE SURPRISE,OFFTHE HOOK,AND BO DIDDLEYS MONAARE AS GREAT AS ANY THING EVER RECORDED BY ANYONE.DOWN HOME GIRL IS A RARE GEM WITH ABSUPERB KIETH RICHARDS RIFF.AND OF COARSE THEIR REMAKE OF LITTLE RED ROOSTER IS SPECTACULAR.IF YOU LIKE THE BLUES THEN THIS LP IS A MUST. ITS A 5 STAR ALBUM IF THERE EVER WAS ONE.

Chuck Leavell admits to three passions: his family, his tree conservation, and his music. A bluesman to the core who's worked with the Allman Brothers Band, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Gov't Mule, the Georgia-based piano player touches the hearts of listeners here with solo performances of mostly original material. The title song pleases with Leavell's improvisations on blues sequences, his references to the history of blues piano tied together with an impressive craftsmanship. Genre-bender "A Lotta Colada," which he originally wrote for his blues-rock-jazz group Sea Level, displays even more of his creative musical mind. Leavell's "Song for Amy" points to the sunny jazz piano of Vince Guaraldi, and his ardor for life comes across most effectively on his Crescent City-directed boogie takeoff on the gospel staple "Walk a Little Closer." --Frank-John Hadley

Rich, Soulful, Crisp Piano Work.......2003-12-08

I recently heard Chuck Levell on Piano Jazz with Marion McPartland and he played some of the best piano blues and standards I have heard in a long time. It was a wonderful show so I thought I 'd explore his solo recordings. I bought and love this album. It is all instrumental which in a way is too bad because Chuck has a nice singing voice. A one star hit from me due to the length. Many releases these days are similarly scant, but at only 37 minutes I had a need for more when it ended after a sweet rendition of "Georgia On My Mind." The music that is there is wonderful.

Just 88 keys, but a lot of soul.........2002-09-05

According to Chuck's liner notes, Forever Blue's opening title track was a quick improvisation he dashed off while the engineer was setting up to record. It's a simple basic blues tune, but brightly performed with some spirited embellishments and a light overall playfulness. This sets the tone for the rest of the record nicely; it's not groundbreaking, but it doesn't try to be anything other than 37 minutes of fun ivory-tickling. Never mind the grim bleakness of the cover, it's quite a cheerful little gem. We've got some upbeat boogie ("Walk a Little Closer"), some Southern gospel ("Higher Ground"), and a few beautiful meditative moments made for quiet reflection. And for mood-lifting sunniness, the joyous "A Lotta Colada" stands out as the brightest offering here. As his history (Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones) attests, Chuck's musical personality is permanently tied to the blues, but the blues aren't always meant to be sad. This shows the joyful side of the coin, and it's one of the nicest quaint treasures I've discovered in a good long time. I'll be getting some mileage out of this.

If you like piano, you will LOVE this CD!.......2002-07-25

When you hear this album you will have a hard time beliving this is solo piano. It is not what you might expect. Not rock based but blues, jazz and N'orleans styles. It is more than the hard piano rifts from Sea Level and Gov't mule. Totally entertaining! So enjoyable you'll want to go out and "spread the word". Chuck is a master and I hope he does more solo work.

Best solo piano recording in ages.......2001-08-23

What a refreshing thing for the ears! Leavell has put together a diverse and satisfying set of tunes that gets better with every listening. The styles range from melodic to latin to boogie, all with a thread of the blues (thus the title). This is a classic, and if it doesn't get a grammy, there is no justice! Buy more than one copy! CAL

Solo Piano that touches the soul.......2001-07-10

Chuck Leavell is a superstar Rock and Roll pianist, his work has been heard shining through on albums and tours by the Allman Brothers, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Gov't Mule, and tons of other superstars. He steps out with this release on his own, with only his piano to express the deep soul that has enhanced the music of so many high profile bands.
