The style is the man--and the song.......2001-05-02
Many composers have chosen to perform their own material and commit it to discs, with mixed results. Only with Noel Coward do we feel that a good deal of the charm of his numbers lies in the very way he performs them. For proof, we now have the Naxos Nostalgia
(8.120529), which dishes up 16 tracks of the ultra-refined son of W. S.Gilbert, giving us six selections from "This Year of Grace," one from "Bittersweet," a medley of treasures from his "Cavalcade," another from his other works, and a few other trifles that are better than most of what is written today.
Add to all this two classical scenes with Coward and co-star Gertrude Lawrence from his "Private Lives," incredibly valuable for those local drama groups who butcher this work in that this CD can teach them the tone and rhythms that are essential in making this classic succeed.
The subtitle of this set is "The Complete Recordings, Volume 1: 1928-1932." So we can look forward to future offerings featuring this fascinating composer-lyricist-performer. Thank you, Naxos, yet again.

Like the Others Made from These Songs, Not Really all that Good.......2006-07-20
These songs were recorded 1983, many years after the sixties had been put to rest. The Seventies were dead and buried too. Donovan apparently wanted to get back some of his old time fans so he rerecorded "Sunshine Superman" and "Season of the Witch" from the "Superman" LP; "Lady of the Stars" and "Local Boy Chops Wood" from the 1977 "Donovan" LP and "For Every Boy There is a Girl" from the "Essence to Essence" LP. A little known company called Allegiance Records put it out in the States, calling it "Lady of the Stars" and it's since been rereleased under many names on many labels.
Sadly, this isn't even the best stuff from those recording sessions. And why oh why if Don was redoing stuff, didn't he redo something that made some kind of sense. This is not a very good record and that's too bad, because Donovan is a great performer. At least they didn't name this CD after a real record like "Sunshine Superman" like another record company did, still the performance isn't all that good. Cover is wonderful though, so I'm going to give this CD two stars for that.
Rare but classic.......2000-04-01
This was my first Donovan album and introduced me to one of the best wordsmiths of our time. Including songs like sunshine superman and season of the witch, it is an essential part of any Donovan colection
