As tasty as the sizzling dish of chicken, plantains, and black beans that adorns its cover, this 18-track compilation is a serious must-own for anyone even vaguely interested in the percolating Afro-Latin sounds of the '50s, '60s, and '70s. Latin jazz giants like Machito, Tito Puente, and Willie Bobo are represented by some of their finest cuts ("Relax and Mambo," "Hong Kong Mambo," and "Fried Neckbones and Some Home Fries," respectively). Lesser-known talents like Pucho and His Latin Soul Brothers ("Heat!"), Kako & His Orchestra ("Shingaling Shingaling"), and Ocho ("Undress My Mind") damn near steal the show with their funk-inflected brilliance. --Dan Epstein

5 out of 5 stars RARIDADES.......2005-06-24

5 out of 5 stars SABROSO!!!.......2003-05-24

If you want to know how latin music lovers partied in the 1960's, this is the CD to have. All the greats are on this like Joe Cuba, Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Willie Bobo, Willie Rosario and more.

"Picadillo" by the legends Eddie Palmieri and Cal Tjader stills blows everybody away. The song is hardcore latin jazz at its best. If you love to cha cha, you'll go crazy for "Undress My Mind" by Ocho, and "Fried Neckbones and Home Fries" by Willie Bobo. Plenty of Mambo, Salsa, Boogaloo, Cha Cha Cha on this one. If you like to dance play this whole CD at your next party, your guests, young or old, will spin the night away!

5 out of 5 stars "Must Have" for fans of Latin Jazz.......2000-07-23

The ultimate test is that I never get tired of listening to this one. Just listen to the first song cranked up; "Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries." It's one of those tunes with some much atmosphere and spirit that you can't get it out of your head. The entire CD is a collection of similar great stuff. If you are getting started with Lating Jazz and want to know what it is all about, this is the perfect place to start. If you know all about Latin Jazz, you will hear new angles on this one. Buy it. Crank it. Play it!

5 out of 5 stars awesome! salsa/mambo/watusi for those who truly neeeed it!.......1998-12-31

The only honest comment I could make would be: "when is the next volume coming out?" A great collection of sensual, foot-tapping, hip swinging latino groove that can only open eyes to the hidden resources of great latino music not currently within the marketing scheme of major latin labels. Buy it only if you like to stay up late and have fun.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, though some songs are uninteresting.......2007-02-13

Some of the songs are slow and boring, but this CD set has some stuff that's hard to find. It's probably worth $10 just for Chick Corea's song "Fickle Funk" which is on an album that is very hard to find and has to be imported (Secret Agent) and can't be found on Itunes. "Party Sex" by Roy Rogers is also very exciting and upbeat with a rippin' vibes solo, and "Hot Stuff" by Wayne Henderson has a great groove. My other two favorites are "Candido's Funk" and "Lord of the Golden Baboon" which is pretty wacko and awesome.

I am a drummer too young to be alive in the 70s, so of course I am a poor authority on 70s jazz-funk, although I do play those styles of music today. Enjoy! or get some Weather Report or Return to Forever's Romantic Warrior album or Mahavishnu Orchestra's Birds of Fire. Yeah!

Worth it just for the short but vital 1975 George Duke tital
cut "The Aura Will Prevail",Sea Level's grooving "Sneakers" and
Wayne Henderson's essencial "Give Up The Booty".Oh yea and there's all kinds are rare stuff by Roy Ayers,Jimmy Smith,
Hugh Masekela,Coke Escovedo and James Brown. This plus Kool & The
Gang's "Univeral Sound" make this a can't-be-without collection.
As a matter of fact if your a funk fan don't listen to any more

Wow!! Polygram have out done themselves with this one! Their Chronicles series of re-issues has reached some giddy heights in the past and this is definitely one of the highest peaks among them. 2 CD's worth of hard to find jazz funk, including some never before issued, all guaranteed to keep fans of any kind of rare groove and dance music moving.
It would be too long and too pointless for me to go through all the tracks, but it's enough to say that there isn't a turkey among them, and that some are the sublimest examples of this kind of music you will find anywhere. And there isn't a drum machine to be heard. Sensational!

    Album Description

Italian Playboys includes nine original songs from the classic 6T's beat styled title track to the introspective After and Once Again, along with a selection of rarely attempted covers including the heavy funk of Jon Lord on Rubber Monkey, an uplifting interpretation of Jack McDuff's Briar Patch (an alternate version will also appear on the forthcoming McDuff tribute album from Scufflin' Records), and a scorching slice out of the library classic Move, Move, Move.

Italian Playboys also features Doug Roberson of mod fave The Diplomats of Solid Sound on guitar for Portofino Vespa Rider, Eddie Roberts of deep funk superstars The New Mastersounds on sitar for Spider Baby, and DJ extraordinaire NINFA lending her vocal talents to the Gus Gus hit Ladyshave.

Italian Playboys follows the seminal Beat.It (2002, Hammondbeat) and several score contributions to 6T's spy-revivalist film Wilson Chance (2004, Bunzendahl Brothers, USA) and soundtrack counterpart Wilson Chance: The Sound of Danger (2004, Hammondbeat).

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Single Reggae Collection I Know!!.......2005-08-16

I agree with the reviewer below - there are a lot of reggae compilations. However, having seen many, I feel this is the best all around!

Having seen a number of these bands in the London when they toured from Jamaica, I can attest how great they are (+ the odd English band on here, such as Steel Pulse - Ku Klux Klan -their first single & arguably their finest moment).

If like many Americans, your exposure to reggae is virtually limited to Marley - don't get me wrong - he was great - his live shows were electric, (lucky me being from London!) then this is a great introduction. If you know your reggae, this rare CD should excite you.

If I bought one compilation this would be it.

        5 out of 5 stars Roots reggae.......2003-11-14

Lets say you are just getting into reggae, limited mostly to Bob Marley's music or for that matter know all about reggae. Either way this is one of those compilations and there are alot of them in the reggae bins, that is a must have. You could say this is roots music. The CD has a variety of artists from reggae's early days, including Jimmy Cliff, The Heptones, Dillinger, Third World, Toots & The Maytals, Burning Spear, Aswad and many more heavies but no Bob Marley. The point is there was reggae before BMW but it just hadn't hit the international level . There are a variety of styles offered on this disc including the dark and haunting rhythms of Burning Spear on the classic "Marcus Garvey," the dub hipnosis injected by Augustus Pablo as the beats drop and crash for a startling effect on "King Tubby meets The Rockers Uptown, the wacky toasting DJ vocal singing of Dillinger on "Cokane in my Brain," the old school Stax-gospel delivery of the Toots and the Maytals on "Reggae Got Soul," the harmony and political history lesson delivered by Third World on "96 Degrees in The Shade," the trans-Atlantic messages of Steel Pulse driven home on "Ku Klu Klan," the African sounds of King Sunny Ade on "Ja Funmi" and the dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson's patois that invokes the rub-a-dub British style. This is a great disc that features some of the most classic songs associated with old school reggae. The booklet includes the names of the albums from which the music was compiled for your future reference as well as over 60 mango titles available at the time(1989) of this discs release. There is plenty of music here, 19 tracks with a running time of 71:07 for your listening pleasure. Old school reggae a it's best and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Must have it in your collection........1999-11-18

This collection is what reggae is all about. It has the soul and has the dancehall. If you listen to this CD you will be hooked on reggae.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars A Very Smooth CD!.......2002-03-23

The CD has great music from back in the 80's when music was in the 12 inch vinyl LP (album) days. You will enjoy the music and the reasons why I bought this CD. This CD reminds me of roller skating birthday/after school parties at the roller rink back in day during the break dancing era of the 80's. I like all of the three 12" remixes of "Sanctified Lady" by Marvin Gaye, "Centipede" by Rebbie Jackson, and "Wake Up Everybody" by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. This CD will bring back memories if you ever host an 80's party in the future. It will keep the old schoolers dancing in the Soul Train Line when they hear "Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody" by Brick, "Back in Stride" by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. This CD is smooth when you hear the other late disco songs by Ashford & Simpson, Chaka Khan, Three Degrees, Isley Brothers, and my favorite jazz artist George Duke with "Shine On". This CD is a must buy.
