Customer Reviews:
Cruisin' with Clapton.......2007-03-09
I think this is one of his better earlier CDs. Although there are no rock 'em sock 'em tunes, songs such as "Roll It", If I Don't Be There By Morning", "I'll Make Love To You Anytime" and others still allow you to have a rockin' good time. It's an excellent CD to listen to when exercising or working outside. The only problem is you like it so much it makes you stop to listen. To me, that's the quality every good music CD has. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
The end of an era.......2007-02-18
The last good Clapton album and the last one with his 70's backup band.
Highlights...
WALK OUT IN THE RAIN (Bob Dylan song done very well as an opener)
I'LL MAKE LOVE TO YOU ANY TIME (J J Cale song)
PROMISES(the hit)
TULSA TIME(Danny Flowers song and the best one here)
EASY LISTENING, UNDEMANDING COUNTRY ROCK/COUNTRY BLUES.......2006-04-01
THIS ALBUM IS A VERY 'LAID BACK' AFFAIR. WHILST NONE OF THE TRACKS STAND OUT AND 'GRAB' YOU, THERE IS NOT MUCH TO DISLIKE EITHER (PROVIDING YOU LIKE THIS SORT OF MUSIC IN THE FIRST PLACE). HOWEVER, MANY FANS WILL BE DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE THERE IS LITTLE IN THE WAY OF THOSE RAW, GRITTY BLUES WHICH WERE A FEATURE OF EC's EARLIER WORK. EC's VOCALS ARE PRETTY GOOD AS ARE THE BACKING AND HARMONY VOCALS (FEATURING MARCY LEVY).
SOME BRIEF COMMENTS ABOUT SELECTED TRACKS (Songwriters in brackets), * denotes a favourite track :
WALK OUT IN THE RAIN* (Bob Dylan/Helena Springs) - Slow to mid- tempo 'bluesy' song, good vocals and some nice 'crisp' drumming; guitar solo OK.
I'LL MAKE LOVE TO YOU ANY TIME* (J J Cale) - Mid-tempo song with some good slide guitar playing; vocals fine (fairly restrained).
ROLL IT (Eric Clapton/Marcy Levy) - Monotonous song with virtually no melody or lyrics. The only things to recommend it are some fine slide guitar playing and Jamie Oldaker's drumming; 'filler fodder'.
EARLY IN THE MORNING* (Trad. arr. Eric Clapton) - For me, easily the best track. Great slow blues (I think EC really excels at this type of music). Great vocals and a couple of nicely executed guitar solos; 8 minutes long.
PROMISES (Richard Feldman/Roger Linn) - A 'mainstream' pop song featuring EC duetting with Marcy Levy. Instrumentally unexceptional. Pleasant and will appeal to many but I found it a bit 'insipid'.
GOLDEN RING* (Eric Clapton) - Slow tempo song with a sad 'bluesy' feel to it. Nice vocals by EC and nice harmony vocals (Gallagher & Lyle).
TULSA TIME* (Danny Flowers) - Old fashioned 'honky tonk' rock and roll.
I QUITE ENJOYED THIS ALBUM AND I MUCH PREFER IT TO '461'.
I Told'ja So!.......2005-11-19
This is just another example of how Eric Clapton was a victim of expectation. The poor guy got slammed so many times by reviewers because he didn't record the kind of songs they wanted him to at the time. But this disc has weathered time very well and it supports what I told my friends back when it was released in '78: this is good stuff. Not his best, perhaps, but more than worth a listen. "Watch out for Lucy" is a catchy pop tune and "Roll It" is an interesting song that might not sound like EC to many listeners but I still like it. The highlights for me are "If I Don't Be There By Morining" and "Tulsa Time", both excellent funky tunes. It's interesting to compare these studio versions with the live versions on "Just One Night" which were recorded a year later in Japan. I actually prefer the live versions but these studio cuts are also excellent. By the way, the Cd also includes the full length version of "Early in the Morning", another excellent tune.
Not his best effort.......2005-11-19
Slowhand was one of the finest albums of his career. This is the follow up. Eric is in a very laid back state of mind.
Bob Dylan contributes two songs to this albun. Walk out in the Rain and If I dont be there by Morning. Both are strong Dylan songs.
Early in the Morning is Clapton playing slow blues. I love it when he plays slow blues.
Promises actually hit the charts in the late 70.s. It was a moderate success for him. I think it topped out at aroud #10.
Golden Ring is a fine acoustic piece and Tulsa Time with its slide guitar is probably the best song on the album.
This is one of those albums that is not great but has a few great songs, for collectors only.

The 2nd Lull in Clapton's Career.......2002-07-17
Periodically throughout Eric Clapton's solo career, his music mellows out to such an extent that it barely resembles rock 'n' roll. His self-titled debut got his solo career off to an unimpressive start, and his most recent offering, "Reptile," makes adult contemporary sound exciting. A similar weak period occurred in the late 1970s through the early 1980s, with "Backless," "Another Ticket," and "Money & Cigarrettes" all competing for title of Clapton's Most Forgetable Album. The country is mellow, the blues are mellow, and even the rockers are mellow. This is easy listening for classic rock fans.
