5 out of 5 stars Love it!!!!.......2006-12-04

I remember suffering from depression as a teenager and listening to this album over and over again. Quite a departure from Frank Sinatra's usual stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Sinatra's best phrasing work...3 1/2.......2006-11-29

This is Sinatra's first full-fledged album of rock material. The songs here aren't great...but I think Sinatra does his best phrasing work on this album.

Sinatra sings songs the way they were meant to be sung, the prime example here is "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," blows Glen Campbells' away, "Little Green Apples" and "Cycles" are excellent and make this album worthwhile.

"Gentle On My Mind" is given a fine reading, "My Way Of Life" and "Rain In My Heart are given knock-out performances and arrangements.

Moody River is fun, but it is a mystery as to why Sinatra added it here. The rest of the songs are ok and make up a nonetheless entertaining album showing a different side to Sinatra. A must for Sinatra Fanatics.

3 out of 5 stars An uneven album.......2006-01-23

By Sinatra's standards, this is a weak album.

Yes, CYCLES, BY THE TIME I GET TO PHOENIX and LITTLE GREEN APPLES are done very very nicely. Especially the 1st two songs fit Sinatra to a T!

The rest of the songs are so so.....

Compared to the MY WAY album, this one pales.

This was Sinatra's first Middle of the Road attempt with Costa and they got better as they went along.

3 out of 5 stars Chairman of the Board tackles New Music in '68.......2005-08-13

Conducted by Bill Miller, and arranged by Don Costa, "Cycles" finds Sinatra tipping his hat to Joni Mitchell & some Nashville songwriters, among others. Nothing here swings, nor is it meant to.

Sinatra tears into the opening track, "Rain In My Heart," in bombastic fashion, his baritone strong. And he turns in an oddly-infectuous, nicely-phrased "From Both Sides, Now," though I wish he would have told the organist/harpsicordist to go scram. Other good tracks include a smooth, reflective "Cycles," a sincere "By the Time I Get To Phoenix," and a nicely-orchestrated, nicely sung "Gentle On My Mind."

Regretfully, "Moody River" found its way onto a Sinatra album...

Lastly, the album's cover is one of the great Sinatra shots ever. Either a dame has just broken his heart, or he's wondering why he puts up with all us clowns.

5 out of 5 stars Frank's Soft-Rock Cycle.......2005-07-26

"Cycles" is Frank's first serious foray into the soft rock/folk music scene in the late sixties. It is an eclectic mix of tunes ranging from "Little Green Apples" to "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". The real standout, however, is "My Way Of Life" which Frank infuses with musical passion and his instinctive feel for the emotional message and tone of the lyric. There are no classic standards here from Cole Porter or Johnny Mercer or any of the other great songwriters that Sinatra revered. This is clearly new musical territory for Frank, and he stamps each song with his own unique interpretation that makes the album work. The mood is mellow and reflective, and Don Costa's soft strings provide the perfect backdrop for Sinatra's vocals. This is not a great album compared to his incomparable body of work with Capitol and his early work with Reprise, but it is still a five-star effort. Sinatra's voice is still excellent, and his timing, phrasing, and diction are flawless. Buy it if you can find a copy, and enjoy the greatest vocalist of all time as he ventures into a new musical universe and once again demonstrates what true musical genius is.

5 out of 5 stars Harley Davidson Road Songs.......2006-10-25

This is an excellent collection of classic rock songs associated with the open road and a free spirit, just like Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

3 out of 5 stars Some hits and misses.......2005-09-20

As a long time motorcyclist, I was hoping this would be a collection of the greatest riding songs ever. It's not. Bob Segar's ROLL ME AWAY and Bon Jovi's DEAD OR ALIVE are not here. It blows my mind that none of the Harley CDs have ROLL ME AWAY but do have Segar's AGAINST THE WIND, which has nothing to do with riding motorcycles. I might of missed the point, but if it's a Harley CD I'm expecting more songs that are about riding or refer to motorcycles in the song.

4 out of 5 stars Great Party Music.......2005-08-15

This is great music to listen to while you sit around and party with your friends. For me it brings back memories of younger days. We do own a Harley, but to enjoy these tunes, it's not necessary. It's also good listening for just hanging out with the one you love.

4 out of 5 stars This Rocks!.......2003-07-30

This is a great CD! My only complaints are "Sacred Ground," which doesn't rock, and "Ridin' the Storm Out," which would be ok if it was the live version. But it's not. Other than that, it's the perfect CD for a road trip.

5 out of 5 stars Wrecking Opinions.......2002-11-08

Awesome CD! That outta the way, this CD is the best compilation of songs I've seen in thirteen and a half years. There's nothing quite as good as listening to Radar Love, I Can't Drive 55, and On The Road Again all on the same disc set! And the songs on this album, even the mistitled Devil Went Down To Georgia (As I remember it it's called Deuling Fiddles), every single one of them, beats anything you could hear on "Today's Hit Music Station". Now, this is my personal opinion, and actually has to deal with a post on the reviews, but Mean Streak needs a life and a few spelling lessons. Sounds to me like Mean Streak is a disgruntled rice-burner boozer with a taste for music about as deep and broad as my pinkie toe. Just my opinion. Oh, and this album is a must-buy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The First Reunion CD By The Doobie Brothers Is Great.......2007-04-27

CYCLES, which is the Doobie Brothers' first CD after getting back together, is a great one, recapturing the gritty ambience which disappeared with Michael McDonald's arrival in early 1976. The big hit here was "The Doctor", but there are other great songs here as well, including a remake of the Isley Brothers' "Need A Little Taste Of Love." The fact that the band members believe that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes CYCLES an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars "Stop hating, and get over it".......2006-10-07

This goes to the a**hole L Brown and all the other idiots who don't know anything about real soul. I'm a (true) Doobie Brothers fan and I'll be the first to admit that all of their albums (which I own, excluding the ones after Michael McDonald's departure) are classics. I love Tom Johnston but but Michael is truly a better singer. The albums with Michael are are nonstop listening. As oppose to maybe two or three that were not up to par pre-McDonald. I'm a black man and I would put McDonald as one of my top ten vocalist of all time. His voice is so unique and has aged well. If you love straight ahead classic rock (like I do) but can't hear anything else - well then the Michael McDonald led Doobies may be a little out of your league. So try to advance your musical knowlegde. And remember - keep the long train runnin!!

5 out of 5 stars The Doobies Without Michael McDonal R-O-C-K!!!.......2006-07-11

Simply put, Michael McDonald ruined the Doobie Brothers. What had been a good rockin' band was transformed into a bland popish group with none of the soul of the original band. This disc, the first recorded by the band since the departure of McDonald and his tasteless influence, is a return to the good time rock for which the band was originally known.

If you liked the Doobies pre-McDonald, then you'll love this disc. If you like the Michael McDonald Doobies, then disconnect from the internet and turn on your local adult pop radio station - there you'll get the same lame, withering, worthless pop that makes people vomit on elevators.

4 out of 5 stars The return of the Doobie Brothers.......2005-10-06

This comeback of the Doobie Brothers lacks Michael McDonald,so I'm only giving four stars. The original Doobie Brothers members reformed in 1989,after a seven-year split. McDonald joined the band in 1975 shortly before original frontman Tom Johnston's exit
the following year. The DB's had broken all ties with their original record label,Warner Brothers after the disbanding. This triumphant comeback was originally released on Capitol. The songs on this album are very good,I must admit. McDonald(in '89) was enjoying success as a solo performer. I believe McDonald decided not to rejoin the DB's. The DB's originally formed around 1969 or '70 and one night caught the attention of a WB producer who patronized the bikers' bar the band was playing at at the time. So the DB's got their first contract with WB and on to success they went.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Reunion.......2003-11-20

The original lineup (well, the Toulouse St. lineup to be fair) of the Doobie Brothers finally got back to together to release an album in the summer of 1989. The result is, in my opinion, their best work. There is really no weakness throughout the album. The Doctor was the huge hit, of course, reaching #9 on the pop charts and #1 on the Rock charts. The followup single was no slackoff itself, as it reached #45 on the pop charts and #3! on the Rock chart. South of the Border also fared well on the rock charts. Musically however, this album flows together so neatly, and each song is so thoughtfully catchy that there are no songs to skip over. Time is Here and Gone is one of the most amazing songs you will ever here - it's message and it's music echo so very true. In fact, lyrically, this album is no doubt the most mature the band ever did. But the music is what makes the Doobs - roaring guitars, sweet acoustics, and their lush, trademark harmonies. This album shows the best of all worlds. So pop it in and be reminded that "Music is the doctor...of my soul".

5 out of 5 stars It might be illegal to put this much beauty on one CD........2000-09-04

Lauridsen has a sense of harmony and rhythm that creates a serene sanctuary of music. One to which a sensory-numbed urbanite (that'd be me) can escape. His music is exciting enough to hold my deficient attention, but soothing enough to calm me and convince me that email, cell phones, and deadlines can wait. His lines flow effortlessly into one another, and his voice-leading is delicate and clever. There is no better living composer of choral music. Period.

4 out of 5 stars The splendor of "Dirait-on".......1999-07-15

I haven't actually heard this C.D. - but I have heard most of the works on it. Morten Lauridsen's work with "Les Chansons des Roses" is absolutely breathtaking. My personal favorite is "Dirait-on." It is so beautiful - it soothes the mind and soul.

These songs reveal Mahler, that frankly autobiographical composer, at his emotionally most personal. For the Songs of a Wayfarer, the earliest cycle (later extensively revised), the poetry--a sorrowful tale of unrequited young love--is Mahler's own. The music is simple, lyrical, and deeply moving, going from inward grief through suicidal anguish to calm resignation. (Two of the themes reappear in the First Symphony.) In Kindertotenlieder, the poet Friedrich Rückert laments the loss of his children, a tragedy he knew from personal experience. Mahler, however, began composing the music before he became a father; two years after he'd completed it, his older daughter died. The cycle contains some of the most harrowing, wrenching songs in the literature. By contrast, the five other Rückert songs radiate a serene happiness that is like a breath of fresh air. The performances on this disc are breathtaking. Quasthoff's voice seems to become more and more beautiful; pure, velvety and warm, it has an endless range of dynamics, nuances and inflections. He draws the listener in from the first moment. Urmana gives the Rückert songs just the right sunny lightness, soaring up in long, sustained, caressing phrases; she keeps the last song, "Um Mitternacht," from becoming bombastic. Although the Kindertotenlieder are really a bereaved father's lament, von Otter makes them totally convincing. Her voice is dark, intense, and luminous. As for the orchestra, Boulez inspires masterful precision and impeccable balance, letting every line stand out. He turns Mahler's incomparable instrumentation into a tapestry of blazing, glittering colors, unleashing both inward and outward tempests. This record will leave you overwhelmed and heartbroken. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars A matter of completion.......2005-10-07

I have a personal reason for liking this CD. Anne-Sofie von Otter, when she did her previous CD of Mahler Lieder with John Eliot Gardiner in 1996, omitted the Kindertotenlieder (I assume she had children at the time who have subsequently grown up). Now, besides Quasthoff singing the Songs of a Wayfarer and Violeta Urmana singing the Ruckert-lieder (both beautifully)we have finally got Anne-Sofie singing the Kindertotenlieder and recordings of Anne-Sofie singing the three major Mahlerian Lieder Cycles. All is crisply conducted by Boulez and a special joy!

5 out of 5 stars Three of Mahler's Song Cycles, Three Artists, One Conductor.......2005-06-28

Pierre Boulez, now in his eighties, has become not only a master of orchestral score clarity: Boulez has also become a poet of the Romantic repertoire. The three beloved song cycles of Gustav Mahler here performed are among Mahler's most tender statements and Boulez allows all of the beauty and anguish to flow unfettered under his leadership.

The brilliant Thomas Quasthoff offers one of the most exquisitely sung 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen' ever recorded. His voice is lush and rich and seamless and he maintains his high level of musicality while becoming utterly absorbed in the poetry of the lyrics. The result is ravishingly beautiful.

Violeta Urmana follows him singing the 'Ruckert Lieder' with somewhat of a light voice until she reaches the 'Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen' when she settles into not only a lovely vocal bloom but a sense of emotional commitment. She continues this mood through the final 'Um Mitternacht'.

And then the stage belongs to Anne Sofie von Otter for 'Kindertotenlieder'. With Boulez she creates magic out of these mournful songs. This is one of the best performances we're likely to hear for a while.

In the end it is to Boulez' credit that he selected the soloists and placed the order of songs and of course conducts the entire ensemble (the Vienna Philharmonic is the orchestra) with expressive brio. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, June 05

At long last...a recording of the Wayfarer Songs that surpasses the classic Fischer-Dieskau from 1968...once thought to be unassailable!!! Why??? Quasthoff's ineffably beautiful voice and performance; Boulez' incredible, mellow, EMOTIONAL conducting; and the Vienna Philharmonic miraculously shadows the two of them with their very special signature sound. Fischer-Dieskau's voice always sounded to me like it was a limited instrument, but his artistry and intelligence always helped him navigate smoothly around its limitations. Quasthoff, on the other hand, has one of the most luscious voices for this repertoire and it is here displayed with a degree of subtlety and musicality that is touching -- heart-breakingly so...

Even more important, this recording features a timpanist than can play in tune. The Bavarian Radio Orchestra, under Rafael Kubelik, in the older recording, includes a timpanist that NEVER gets his lower note in tune with the rest of the orchestra: a serious problem to anyone with a trained musical ear, especially with all the exposed timpani solos in this music.

The Rückert songs and the Kindertotenlieder, as sung by Urmana and von Otter are good performances, but most definitely not on the plane of Quasthoff and the Wayfarer cycle. Too bad the idiots at DGG didn't get the other cycles recorded by Quasthoff, also!!! If that had been the case, this recording would have been an instant classic.

As it is, the Wayfarer Songs, as performed by Thomas Quasthoff on this disc, are worth every penny. For the other two cycles run, don't walk, and get Janet Baker's recordings on EMI/Angel, then pray DGG will record Quasthoff's performances very soon!!!

BUY THIS AND LOVE IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-03-21

Boulez doing Mahler produces disparate results. His recording with the CSO of the 9nth is devoid of feeling, as if he were pushing Mahler past Webern somehow.

But this recording is unbelievable in beauty, tenderness. It is as if Boulez were comfortable simply to take the time to present the music in the most expressive way possible, but with equisite restraint. And the orchestra, one I do not usually like, is right there with him it what seems to me an amazingly passionate performance.

5 out of 5 stars Rapturous,diaphanous Mahler Lieder .......2005-02-02

In his recordings of various artists' song cycles,Boulez,it seems, often has been inspired to producing some of his most profound performances.
His classic recordings of the little performed songs of Ravel, Schoenberg, and Berg still remain the yardstick by which all others are measured.
Now, comes his arrival of three Mahler lieder and the results are something to celebrate.
Indeed, this may prove to be his best Mahler yet.
In the Ruckert Lieder, Boulez coaxes both the Viennal Players and Violeta Urmana into producing sensuous sounds and colors which could come straight out the most transparent Klimt paintings.
It's my personal favorite of the three, but that opinion is already biased, as I have a definite soft spot for this piece.
Thomas Quasthoff is appropriately noble in the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Anne-Sofie von Otter has arguably never been more profund than in the Kindentotenlieder found here.
Boulez proves here that he's far more than 'just' a musical intellect, he also has acute rythmic instinct.
Each singer is perfectly cast, the sound is superb and Boulez's conducting is among his most crystal clear and lucid to date.
Like his other songcycles, this should prove to be a genuine 'classic'.

5 out of 5 stars best of his work.........2002-06-25

any fan of r. carlos nakai's special flute work will love this album.. perhaps overlooked as just the soundtrack to a museum film (where I first heard this and bought the tape - The Heard Museum in Phoenix) - it truly deserves to be heard on CD. 'Creativity' may be the coolest composition of Nakai's career - catchy enough to be a single on the radio - with all the magic you know from this guy.. check this album out.

    Product Description

By now the Illinois State University Wind Symphony under Kenneth Steele has achieved renown for their adventuresome Albany recordings (TROY500, TROY600, TROY755 and TROY774-775). One of the composers prominently featured in these releases is David Maslanka, who, after Vincent Persichetti, is probably the most important American composer for band. His Symphonies 4 and 5 are featured in this series, and the Symphony No. 7, as Maslanka explains, is a Symphony of “old songs remembered:” “I am strongly affected by American folk songs and hymn tunes. With one exception all the tunes are original, but they all feel very familiar. The borrowed melody is from the 371 Four-Part Chorales by J.S. Bach. Each song has a bright side and a dark side, a surface and the dream underneath.” Samuel Zyman, a long-time Juilliard faculty member, is one of the most prominent Mexican composers. His Cycles is a one-movement work that consists of several distinct sections that appear and alternate “cyclically” throughout the work. Matthew Halper’s works are widely performed and his Flute Concerto is an expansive, dramatic work that covers a wide musical terrain in a single movement.

5 out of 5 stars The "real" first band to play at Woodstock.......2005-12-27

A real "diamond in the rough". This band was a group of extremely talented musicians, who wrote excellent melodies and arrangements. The lyrics were a bit on the pop side but you need to put that in the context of the era and they were just getting started. However, the music was complex for it's time, yet melodic and rhythmic, more like a good, small orchestra doing rock. Their style is somewhat of a blend of what is called progressive today, mixed with a heavy dose of flower power and classical overtones. But it works well. Vocals were great and Nanci Nevins had the personal and vocal appeal as their lead singer too. Some interesting trivia about this unique band; there was no guitar in the original band. The lead and rhythm are done on a Cello and they were one of, if not the most inclusive and diverse band of their time. The original tracks are nicely remixed. They included a live cut from their Woodstock appearance and a nicely done info. and photos insert is included as well. A rare, historical gem for the rock archives. Had they stayed together they could have been a real influence on the early, formative rock years. Actually, they were on their way when they experienced an all to real and devastating tragedy. If you want to learn more about what happened to end their rise to fame before their time see the video "Sweetwater a True Rock Story". If you are music history fan or just want to experience some "new to you", yet classic rock, check out this CD. I gave it 5 stars because there was no 4 and 1/2 stars. For it's day, the band was unique and the music is quite good. It's a piece of music history that was thought lost for a long time and it's quite enjoyable and fun too!
