Chuck Mangione at his best.......2007-01-27
The atmosphere at the Hollywood Bowl was nice and cosy. And so was the music. And so is this 2 cdset. I enjoy at least three times a week!

Great!.......2007-01-09
Chuck Mangione has been a favorite of mine since high school. This CD brings back memories from the time when things were much less hectic... This is a perfect CD for many occasions, mostly anything to do with romance....
Simply the best!.......2006-12-10
I first bought this on vinyl in 1979. It was magic then, and is still magic today. Back when I was 17, I was spending a summer in Tucson with my grandparents, and that's when I bought this LP. I played it over and over on their old cabinet-size stereo. Later, I would listen to it on my home stereo turned up to "11", and I was mezmerized by the lush strings and soaring horn section. Chuck's improvisations escaped my meager abilities on the trumpet in high-school, but I could hum them from memory all day long. The rest of the band is truly at the top of their game, as well. Grant Geissman's solo on "Chase The Clouds Away" is simply the best guitar solo of any genre in the history of music. Charles Meeks, James Bradley, Jr., and Chris Vadala give the performances of a lifetime. My favorite track is "I Get Crazy". It's short, but powerful. The layered ending comes to an abrupt, but spectacular end in a great sixteenth note run. There are no bad tracks or "skip-overs" here. "B'Bye" is a great expression of mourning and loss sandwiched between two movements of a towering "Children Of Sanchez". The album cover photos clearly show the sheet music to "Legend Of The One-Eyes Sailor" and I wish that this work had not ended up on the edit room floor. Maybe the powers-that-be will add the original set tunes back and release a full picture of this concert, warts and all (provided there are any warts, which I doubt). On the other hand, this was a 2 night event, so even with some editing, both shows could be brought together with all of the tunes included.
Over the years, I've probably listened to this album in some form or another probably 1000 or more times. It's the only recording I have on vinyl, cassette tape (remember those?) and CD. Now I play it over and over on my iPod, and on my computer thru iTunes. Funny how the tech has changed over the years, but you still keep coming back to the music that set your soul ablaze. Mick Guzauski, Jeff Tkazyik, and Chuck knew what they were doing when they sat down in the studio and mixed this album. The strings are rich and warm, the horn section is balanced and soaring, and the quartet sounds like they're in your room with you. If this didn't win the Grammy for sound editing, then I envy whatever recording did.
6 out of 5 stars.
You are there!.......2006-05-08
All of the previous reviews will tell you that this is a great concert album. For me, this is one of those albums that fully blooms when listened to on good quality headphones - ones that completely shut out all outside noise and give high quality sound. When you experience this album in a pure environment, you literally feel as if you are in the middle of the stage on a cool summer evening in Los Angeles - true "surround sound". Having grown up there and attended many concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, I can say that this album evokes the experience like none other that I have heard. So put on your headphones, close your eyes, and enjoy the trip!
Mangione On Fire.......2006-03-29
Recently, while looking here on amazon to see if Main Squeeze had yet been re-mastered and reissued, I encountered An Evening of Magic. I don't know why I did not already have this on vinyl. Perhaps I ignored it when it was released because I was justifiably leery of "live" recordings and then subsequently just forgot about it. Anyhow, when I saw that the entire Main Squeeze album was on this CD, I ordered it, Main Squeeze itself being unavailable at any reasonable price. And as it turns out, I was really missing out on some great music all these years.
An Evening of Magic features a live performance of Chuck Mangione with his quartet and the LA Philharmonic at the peak of his popularity. Mangione is absolutely on fire, its clear that he came to play. After one listen, all my reservations about how he would sound on a live album melted away. This is indeed Chuck Mangione at his finest.
Though the whole CD is excellent, I do have some favorite cuts. Highlights are a dreamy Chase the Clouds Away, the romantic Doin' Everything With You, the brassy Love The Feelin', the dramatic I Get Crazy, the mellow classic Land of Make Believe, the relaxing The Day After (Our First Night Together), and two movements of Mangione's rousing Children of Sanchez.
If you are as leery of "live" recordings as I usually am, you needn't be with this one. An Evening of Magic, Live at the Hollywood Bowl is one live recording that belongs in every jazz lover's collection.

Excellent compilation.......2007-02-02
I prefer LIve Killers to this album but I prefer this album to Live At Wembley.
People have complained about the editing but it is still an excellent compilation, and does recreate the magic of a live performance by Queen, in the days of the late great Freddie Mercury.
It starts out with One Vision, continues with the great hard rocker Tie Your Mother Down, continues with one of my favourites, the glam rock Seven Seas Of Rhye, followed by the pop hit A Kind Of Magic to the mesmerizing Under Pressure, Another One Bites The Dust, with it's powerful beat, the spirited I Want To Break Free, the enviromental awareness song, This Is The World We Created?, Queen's best known hit, the rock opera This Is The World We Created?, the funky Hammer To Fall and Radio Gaga, the hit used in sports matches and advertisements around the world, We Will Rock You, the comforting Friends Will Be Friends and the anthemic We Are The Champions, before ending with Queen's version of God Save The Queen.
A great rounding off to your collection, but the greatest hits albums first, and possibly Queen's earlier albums.
Good performances plagued by terrible editing.......2005-06-07
Live Magic (1986.) Queen's second live album.
Queen is one of the best, if not the best, rock band of all time. The quartet of bassist John Deacon, vocalist Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, and percussionist Roger Taylor released some of the greatest rock music ever created. The band's career of roughly twenty years featured many highs with only an occasional low - when this band succeeded, they succeeded beautifully. In 1986, following the release of A Kind Of Magic, the group's collection of songs for the film Highlander, they released their second live album, appropriately called Live Magic. Although it got a UK release in 1986, it didn't get an American release until 1996, ten years later. How does the group's second live album measure up? Read on and find out.
Live Magic is a double-edged sword - you get excellent performances of excellent songs on this record, but many of the tracks have been edited - and I mean SEVERELY edited. Let's start out by examining what the album does well. This was recorded in 1986, not long after the release of the A Kind Of Magic album. The tracklist is a bit heavy on songs from the albums that immediately preceeded it, but there are plenty of the old seventies cuts on here as well. Many of these songs even rival their studio counterparts in terms of overall musical performance quality, the eighties songs in particular. I don't particularly care for some of the band's mid-eighties material, but in a way, the sheer quality of some of the performances of those songs on this album changed my whole outlook on how I think about them. In other words, where this release succeeds, it succeeds very well. But then we get to the problem - the editing. Many of the songs on this album have been butchered severely. For instance, Seven Seas Of Rhye's play time was chopped almost in half, and Tie Your Mother Down is lacking the second verse and the extended guitar-heavy instrumental outro following the third verse. Likewise, Bohemian Rhapsody is missing the first minute or so (admittingly though, in this case this could just have been the way the band performed the song.) These are some of my favorite Queen songs, and seeing them get butchered like this greatly damaged my overall opinion of the release (and I haven't even listed every edit.) It's amazing how one little problem can destroy a whole album. Likewise, many of the performances are subpar in comparison to those found on other Queen live releases. What's even a bigger problem is that by the time this came out in the United States, the vastly superior live release Live At Wembley had already been released, rendering the this album obsolete in America before it was even released! And since Live At Wembley is essentially a higher quality, more representative look at this era of Queen's live music, why not just buy it instead? My final verdict is to buy Live At Wembley instead, and not get this unless you're one of those Queen die-hards who just can't get enough of the band.
This album still seems to be fairly readily available in America, so if you really want to get it (and you shouldn't unless you're a die-hard fan), you shouldn't have to look too hard. Most major CD retailers in America should carry this one.
Overall I have to say that Live Magic is a disappointment. There are a lot of successes, but they're ultimately overshadowed by the horrific editing and the occasional subpar performance. If you want a good Queen live album, get Live Killers (my personal favorite of the live albums), Live At Wembley (a much better overview of the time period Live Magic represents), or Live At The Bowl (just a damn good performance from the early eighties.) Live Magic is not recommended, unless you're an extremely big Queen fan, and I mean well above average. Anyone less than a die-hard isn't going to be too impressed with this release, as they shouldn't be with so many superior live albums around.
QUEEN'S LIVE N LITE COMPILATION.......2005-01-09
This disc was the 2nd live offering from Queen after QUEEN LIVE KILLERS was made in the late seventies.
I like it a lot and prefer this to Live at Wembley and even the recent On Fire, all of which are double sets.
Here's why - although it's edited - the performances are sterling. Versions of One Vision, Tie Your Mother Down and Radio Gaga are great.
No disagreements that Bohemian sounds butchered but the album moves along at a nice pace. It feels tighter. Worth getting for the songs unless you must have a complete double set of Queen in concert.
I will say that the definitive live Queen set is probably still in the vaults waiting to be released...
Not bad... even worse.......2004-10-20
this is the worst live album Queen ever released, believe me
I love Queen but this album was a total disappointment... cuts, bad performances (Bohemian rhapsody is a disaster), bad recording quality...
buy Live at Wembley, THAT is a GREAT live album, this is just crap
Terrible.......2004-08-22
The songs on Live Magic have been heavilly edited. Much better versions can be found on Live At Wembley the album to get instead of this one.

Customer Reviews:
Rock+Intelligence+More Rock=Supersuckers.......2006-12-20
When I want to listen to one of my favorite live recordings from one of my favorite bands,I pop this little gem in. What an awesome set! This set has all of your (and mine) favorite Supersuckers tunes! Hell this is worth the price of admission for the cover of Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak alone! Singer Eddie Spaghetti drops litte nuggets of pure rock ingenuity on this here album as well. Listen to the whole album in it's entirety, and you will here why the Supersuckers are the Rock n Roll world's gift to all of us-the PEOPLE OF IMPECCABLE TASTE!
How to Maximize Your Rock Count.......2005-04-12
The Supersuckers are even crazier live than on their studio albums, and this disc is a great substitute for being there in person. Even though I've yet to see the Supersuckers live, I have been to the venue where this was recorded (in the Detroit area). It's a little small, so this disc is low on raucous crowd noise, but the band rocks out with ferocity and Eddie Spaghetti's stage banter is some of the kookiest in the business. The band's beer-soaked riffs and bluesy grooves totally rock the house, especially after a warm-up period at the start of the set. The highlights of this show are brutal renditions of "The Evil Powers of Rock n' Roll," "Creepy Jackalope Eye" and "My Victim." The middle of the set slows down a little, not withstanding some solo work by new drummer Mike Murderburger (who by the way has kept the Supersuckers rolling along without delay). But rest assured that the band quickly returns to full power with fierce takes on "Fisticuffs" and "How to Maximize Your Kill Count." Also check out the killer cover of "Jailbreak" in the fake encore. These guys may not be world famous (yet), but they're perfect for in-the-know fans who like rollicking songs about beer fights and killing people. [~doomsdayer520~]
I don't even like live albums.......2005-02-27
So I thought I was buying the Supersuckers DVD, but I accidentally ordered this little jewel by mistake (Imagine my surprise when I put it in the DVD player and nothing happened).
Still, I was a little bummed that I didn't get the DVD but I decided to give it a whirl anyway. Let me just say, that I usually really don't care for live albums, but this one is frickin' fabulous. I mean, this thing seriously rules. I saw the 'suckers a few times on their last tour, and this record was a faithful reproduction of the smashing good time I had at their shows. It sounds lame, but it was actually 'like I was there'. I would highly recommend this to any Supersuckers fan, or anyone who is interested in getting to know them by hearing some of their best material. The sound quality and production are excellent as well, I applaud whoever did the recording, mixing and mastering on this one, truly well done.
sweet ass.......2004-11-30
This live album is the closest you can get to capturing the magic of a live supersucker show. Which makes the name of the album appropriate. Eddie Spaghetti's banter is one of the best to ever grace the rock n roll stage. he'll have you laughing your ass off one minute and without warning slashes into a kick ass rock song that is hellishly ballzy. I have been a supersucker fan for years and the way the suckers have things worked out with their label, touring, and recording- it looks like I'll be a fan for many, many more years. ~ kado~
Live Rock-N-Roll at last!!!.......2004-11-11
Not only do they deliver [...] kicking Rock, but they make it seem so effortless and fun as hell. If rock is your thing, then this is your live cd. With great songs from their 15 yr career and a few selected covers, the boys keep the spirit of real rock alive.

One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09
Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

I admit first off that I did not hear this record and I can't seem to download samples, perhaps for a reason. However, I was at the concerts during this period, and I am 99 percent convinced that this is the band that recorded that dreadful Bluejeans and Moonbeams ( or was it the other way around? I have totally blanked out that period. Ghastly!).
If I am correct, and the bizarre cover version of Sweet Georgia Brown tells me I am correct, then this was a group of studio guys who were hired to put the Tux on the Torpedo and make him commercially "viable." I recall sitting in a club in Dallas, listening to this stuff and screaming "Where's the Beef" -- long before it had become a commercial tag line. Hell, he could sing. But the band was playing lounge versions of the old songs and the new songs were lounge to begin with.
This was a very sorry period in the life of a great artist. Fortunately, he returned with the fantastic Virgin recordings, maybe his best work, overall. But I would just ask you to beware of this, because I watched this period happen, and while a train wreck may inspire some gaping and slow traffic, I feel this kind of product, again, if I'm correct, does a disservice to the Captain. Someone else please confirm, but this does not appear to be a real Magic Band recording.

WHEN FILM-SCORE METAL COMES ALIVE!
In January 2006, Italian Film Score Metal icons Rhapsody are poised to release their first live album ever on Magic Circle Music - entitled Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret!
This testimony of pure energy, over 60 minutes long, was recorded at the 'Albert-Rousseau Arena' in Quebec City on June 13, 2005 during leg one of Rhapsody being the special guest on Manowar's 'Demons, Dragons and Warriors World Tour'. The first leg of the tour, completed in Summer 2005, was highly acclaimed internationally for its stripped down and performance orientated arrangements, which allowed the band to prove that the music is the message. "This album is exceptionally magical", says guitarist and composer Luca Turilli. "It combines the song visions with the fun we had on stage and the amazing reaction from the fans". Keyboardist and composer Alex Staropoli joins: "The reaction of the fans in Canada and the US was just unbelievable. That's why we simply had to name this album 'Live In Canada'. A true dedication!"
This Special Edition of Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret will be released as a two disc set featuring the complete Quebec show and a bonus DVD with exclusive behind-the-scenes-material as well as the complete album in 5.1 surround sound! With no doubt this will set the band's epic performance in a new light and give the listener a truly monumental audio experience.

Could have had a longer and better set.......2006-02-10
I'm giving this three and a half stars actually.
I don't feel I'm getting much more with the bonus DVD, other than finding out I'm going to be spending more on the upcoming live DVD (!). I don't find much use for the additional audio version of the concert on DVD.
Complaints first. Such a short set. Only nine songs actually, not counting the intro `The dark secret' and the `Gran finale.'
The selection is not great. They put relatively boring stuff like `Village of the dwarves' instead of something like `Holy thunderforce' or `Rain of a thousand flames.'
I'm not the biggest fan of the album `The dark secret' either, so to see three of the nine songs coming from there, wasn't very cool. Or they could have put `Never forgotten heroes' if they really wanted a `Dark secret' song.
You can barely hear the bass guitar in the mix, so there's always that lack when listening to it.
For live concerts, I prefer huge arena-sounding drums with a real deep end and strong reverb for the snare, but the snare in this CD is alright. The bass drum however could have been mixed a bit more.
I'm glad the CD contained `Wisdom of the kings' and `Emerald sword' at least. And Rhapsody is always a tight band, at least from what I'm heard from a bootleg.
So there. There could have been more songs, and less `trudge' songs like `Village of the dwarves.' They could have put a lot more goodies on this CD. I hope the DVD lives up to its claim of having plenty of documentaries and stuff. I actually enjoy documentaries and stuff as much if not more than the recorded concerts.
Very Good Stuff Here!.......2006-02-03
This is a very good live album! All the songs sound really really good. The setlist is not the best, but it works well.
I wish the dvd had the whole entire Live In Canada concert on it... That would have been a lot better, but it only has a few previews of the shows.
If your a fan of Rhapsody, or a fan of POWER METAL in general, you should pick this up, and give it a listen.

lots of standard blues.......2006-05-01
Canned Heat's '70 Concert: Recorded Live In Europe' captures the legendary boogie band in April of 1970 headlining a show that also featured the band's Renaissance and Deep Purple. Deep Purple were on the cusp of establishing themselves as one of the elite rock bands on the planet, while Canned Heat had just released their 'Future Blues' album, which contained the surprise hit cover of Wilbert Harrison's 1969 composition 'Let's Work Together'. The song wouldn't be a hit in the US until November of 1970 (where it rose to #26 nationally), but it rose to #2 in the UK in January, prompting a Spring tour of Europe by the band. They were to return in the Fall for a second tour of Europe, but it would be without talented slide guitarist, vocalist, and harmonica player Al 'Blind Owl' Wilson, who would die of a heroin overdose between the two tours.
'Live In Europe' features a wealth of standard blues from the band over the course of it's 47 minutes, in addition to a loping rock and roll workout on Harrison's 'Let's Work Together', which emphasizes Wilson's bottleneck slide over the fuzz-tone rhythm track that dominates the studio version, and an agonizing rendition of 'Pulling Hair Blues', an Alan Wilson composition that is so slow and painfully orchestrated that it threatens each and every listener with his or her own case of trichotillomania (hair pulling syndrome)... not a pretty picture. The remaining tracks are fairly standard blues and boogie fare, such as the opener, 'That's All Right, Mama', 9 minutes worth of Bob Hite vocals, and nice wah-pedal psychedelic guitar from Harvey Mandel. 'Bring It On Home' follows, offering 6 minutes of funky boogie with form-fitting harmonica runs from Wilson. Track four is a highly improvised medley that is suppose to feature the Heat classic, 'On the Road Again', but doesn't, although it is a sweet, funky blues track. 'London Blues', another Wilson composition, is a mid-tempo blues track featuring more exquisite bottleneck slide from the Blind Owl. 'Goodbye For Now' should not be listed as a seventh track, as it's just the band jamming while Hite runs through the band introductions. The disc does offer some entertaining between-songs banter, with Hite offering to do his "Jim Morrison impersonation", which he apparently does given the roaring approval of the audience. The audience unsuccessfully tries to cajole Hite into performing 'Dust My Broom', which he dusts off with "Fleetwood Mac does that", and 'Parthenogenisis', which is comedically declined unless the audience comes up with some "acid".
'Recorded Live In Europe' is certainly a historic collection given the lack of early Canned Heat concert performances. Despite being well-recorded, I couldn't help but to be disappointed that the content didn't include the trademark falsetto vocals of Blind Owl Wilson, especially as the setlist includes his famed 'On the Road Again'. This digipak version is also devoid of all but the most basic information about the tracks, omitting even the running times. If you're in the market for a wealth of the band's trademark blues performances, however, you may be hard pressed to find other high quality, early recordings of the band in concert, period. The Topanga Canyon and Kaleidoscope releases are also devoid of classic Heat boogie tracks such as 'On the Road Again' and 'Goin' Up the Country'. Four stars for blues aficinados, three for the rest of us.
Little different side of live Canned Heat.......2005-12-10
This 1970 concert of the guys is a bit different then others as it shows a somewhat mellower side. There are some great boogie moments here like the first 2 tracks. "That's All Right Mama" features some great guitar work by Harvey Mandel. Alan Wilson does some nice harmonica playing throughout also. Still you can't help but wonder about Alan Wilson's state of mind during the melancholy Pulling Hair Blues and to some degree London Blues where his singing while good has a sadder than usual feel to it. These 2 songs cast an odd downer feel to what is otherwise a pretty upbeat concert. So that is why I say it's a little different side here. All in all a worthwhile addition to your collection. I'd also suggest Live at Topanga Corral.. another great collection of live Canned Heat.
