Album Description

Are You Lookin' at Me? is Colin Hay's first studio album of new material in over five years. A tuneful, insightful meditation on life, love, sobriety, maturity and perseverance, the album finds Hay at the absolute peak of his craft. As a writer and vocalist, he has never been more masterful: finding intriguing new angles on instantly relatable scenarios, skewering and savoring in equal measure. His less acclaimed but no less formidable skills as arranger, engineer and bandleader insure that each song is supported by evocative musical backdrops ranging from electronic textures to plaintive acoustic balladry to classic guitar-driven pop. Are You Lookin' at Me? is unified by Hay's immediately identifiable voice, relentless curiosity, wonder and a decidedly uncluttered sound which has its roots in Hay's consistently busy tour schedule.

4 out of 5 stars I bought myself new glasses..........2007-07-15

Such a great CD. I came to know Colin Hay the solo artist via his song on the Garden State soundtrack. Then I picked up Man @ Work and Going Somewhere and have since become a huge fan of his work.

This album took a bit to grow on me and once it did, I couldn't stop listening to it. I think my favorite song is "Lonely Without You" but honestly, there's not one song on this CD that I skip past. It's a great listen from top to bottom and one of those CDs that you can have on in the background as you're chilling out or blaring through your speakers as you head out out of Hollywood and drive into the hills.

5 out of 5 stars J.Merritt is right! .......2007-06-07

Try listening to Men at Work and feeling sad. It is NOT possible. Colin Hay has a voice and an attitude to cheer. My only gripe is that "Looking for Jack" is currently unavailable. Another great album from a singer with his mind on the pulse. Buy this and his other by-passed albums and feel refreshed! More please Colin!

4 out of 5 stars The sun always shines in angel town!.......2007-05-31

Colin's new cd is great. This is the kind of CD you can kick off your shoes and hang out, cook, dance, bathe too. He has a raspy sexy voice (sorta reminds me of Huey Lewis a little). Some of his songs are deep and moving- but most of the songs are on the same page- so if easy listening is what you are looking for and need an even keeled, even-tempered cd then this might be the perfect one. Most the songs are great, musically and lyrically. His raspy voice seems to soak up lyrics like a sponge, and his lyrics swell with his voice. A few songs are a little weaker than others. Midnight Sun is not a favorite of mine, but it's still simple, easy, and just plain good music to chill to.

5 out of 5 stars Colin Hay does it again !!!.......2007-05-29

As a devoted follower of Colin's Work, it sounded a little more reserved than a typical Colin Hay album. He doesn't go for it as much with his voice, it tends to have more of a relaxed feel to it. That isn't a bad thing at all. The album version of the title track "Are You Looking At Me?" is very good. I heard him sing it live at a show in Belfast and I was blown away.

Since my trip to see him live in Belfast earlier this year I've been looking forward to the arrival of this album. It didn't disappoint either. A nice mix of tunes and another fine album to add to my personal Colin Hay Discography at home. I'd highly recommend you purchase this album. Also, If you want to hear Colin at what I would class as his most powerful, Then buy his album "Wayfaring Sons" or why not buy them all :-)

4 out of 5 stars Colin Hay deserves your attention.......2007-05-19

I bought this album at a Colin Hay concert in Sellersville, PA and was lucky enough to have Colin sign the CD. When we spoke he said that "this is the best of my records" and I didn't think much of it because of course he isn't going to say anything different.

The CD has been in my car ever since, and I can say that Colin nailed this album. The album isn't typical Hay; it is a bit more produced but not overly so, and has more pop melodies than most of his ballad-centric albums. The record sounds like a mixture of David Gray and Elvis Costello. The tunes are catchy and I have been going around saying "Are you looking at me, pal?" and "What would Bob do, what would Bob do?"

So, I highly recommend this album if you like witty, charming and mature songwriters who can carry a tune. Also: see him in concert if you can.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08

"The true mission of the violin is to imitate the accents of the human voice, a noble mission that has earned for the violin the glory of being called the king of instruments." ~ Charles-Auguste De Bériot ~

Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.

These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.

One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.

My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."

My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."

The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."

The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."

Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)

A musical treat.

1 out of 5 stars Warning ! This is not the original sound track !!.......2006-08-03

Bear in mind this is not the original Pink Panther sound track, even though they deceptively make it look as if it is. I purchased this CD specifically for the number Claudia Cardinale sings, but to my great disappointment her song is not included and they substitute the corny instrumental in it's place. I feel cheated, and believe they should make it clear that this CD may not contain the tracks one may be looking for...

5 out of 5 stars Like The Movie, Only Better.......2006-05-23

The Pink Panther became a "property" for Peter Sellers and many other writers and actors - and it's not hard to imagine how they came to dislike the many limitations of character and comic possibilities.

However, the first movie showed the most originality and life. And the same could be said for Henry Mancini's score. Before the Inspector becomes a complete buffoon, the storyline called for a great deal of sophistication, mystery and intrigue, and Mancini delivered it all and more.

There are many great tracks here, foremost of which was the theme itself. However, "Meglio Stasera" stands as a great hallmark of this mid-1960s era.

"If you're ever gonna kiss me - it had better be tonight."

Go - go - GO!

5 out of 5 stars Cool and Blissful Soundtrack.......2006-03-07

Henry Mancini's classic soundtrack to THE PINK PANTHER is very timely for the carefree period in which it was released and captures the feel of this film and those great times that still resonate in the mind. THE PINK PANTHER theme is an endearing and enduring melody that has become instantly identifiable with both the cartoon character and the film series. The soundtrack captures a lot of source music that was certainly in vogue and has captured that tantalizing cocktail jet set quality in the numerous compositions especially in IT HAD BETTER BE TONIGHT. The aplomb and easy nature of this recording is on target capturing the great feel of this film giving the listener the chance to relive the experience.

2 out of 5 stars Fran Jeffries Sang "It had Better be Tonight" in the film.......2004-10-07

Actually, that was Fran Jeffries who sang that version of "It Had Better be Tonight" in the film. She played the role of the "Greek" Cousin. Visit this link for an excellent biography and discography:

http://www.swinginchicks.com/workinitfordaddy.htm

It received a lot of top 40 radio play after the film release. Don't know why it has not appeared on any of the compilations.

3 out of 5 stars Missing the best part!.......2004-07-24

Overall, this cd is good. But there is a MAJOR part missing. "It Had Better Be Tonight" was a highlight of the movie; presented like a music video, it featured a fabulous performer (Fran Jefferies, I have now been informed) all swinging sixties & mod loveliness, singing in ITALIAN. So, where is she on this re-released cd? She contributed quite alot to the film and to be left off the soundtrack is a big let down. I bought this hoping to hear her singing and was left with a chorus singing in English...So, besides that, the cd is as fun as everything Mancini should be.

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2005-08-29

This CD is just as great as the more recent "Ronan" CD. I clicked on 3 stars in error. This is a 5++ star album! His voice is sheer perfection, and the songs are wonderful. I also highly recommend the DVD of "The Impossible Dream," even though I didn't care at all for the London Community Choir who sing four songs. Note: The American version of the DVD doesn't have the 25-minute "Dr. Courageous" extra on it that the Irish version does. I saw him in concert last month, and besides having a voice that soars to the rafters, he is warm, funny and endearing.

4 out of 5 stars Music like this could make me a convert.......2005-08-17

I've always been a rock and roll fan since back in the 60's. Listening to this cd could easily convert me into a classical music fan as well. Wow what a voice.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful!.......2003-01-22

Having seen Ronan in person recently in the U.S., I was impressed first and foremost by his singing ability, and second by his stage presence and warmth. He is a special performer and human being. I am proud to be a Ronan Tynan fan.

4 out of 5 stars Tenor terrific.......2003-01-18

I am not a fan of this kind of music, but I bought this after hearing a few sound snippets at amazon and WoW! what a find. Excellent song selection, powerful singing, fine music quality for a live recording. Expand your horizons and enjoy. (get this wayno)

ronan tynan is a great role model for adults and children alike. he was born with a deformity and made a decision he would make something of himself, he had a goal and he surpassed it. no one puts as much of their heart into as he. he puts the audience into his songs, he makes us feel he is singing to each one of us individually. HE IS THE GREATEST IRISH TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD, INCLUDING JOHN MC CORMAC the great irish tenor of the 30's

5 out of 5 stars Super grooves from Alvin and the band.......2007-04-27

I picked this album up the other day and it really is great. Alvin leads an excellent group with some spot-on drumming, creating a great feel for the band to show what they can do. Jesse Davis is not someone I've heard play before; he puts in a superb showing with some really polished playing on sax. Terrel Stafford on trumpet I have heard play live before and was blown away then; I'm not disappointed now! Overall there's a great laid-back bluesy style to this set, though Alvin still injects a sense of urgency in the right places. It all works really well. Mike LeDonne brings in some great Hammond licks and Peter Bernstein rounds of an excellent quintet on guitar.

Recommended!

I've never heard of this artist before. Just picked the cd up on a whim and to my surprise it was excellent. It ministered just where I needed to be ministered. I love her voice and you can hear her joy for the Lord. If you get this cd you will be blessed.

I was amazed at this CD. How did this one slip through the cracks? If you like praise and worship music this is definitely the CD for you. My favorite is "Worthy is the Lamb." Her rendition will put you into a true Holy Spirit state and bring you back to reality in the world of truly who is in control. Several of her other selections will have you up jumping, shouting, and clapping your hands. If you don't believe me just listen to the samples. If you are in touch with your spirit, this CD is for you.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

4 out of 5 stars GET IT.......2005-11-16

I discovered "Sunscreem" via DJ Michael Fierman's FIRE ISLAND mixes, and this CD is superb. If you ever danced at the Pavillion, or anywhere, this mix will get you off of your butt.

5 out of 5 stars continuous, flowing, clean, and beautiful.......1999-10-11

Sunscreem produces some of the most moving and beautiful (dance)music that you can find. This continuous mix is an essential cd to own for anyone interested in dance music. Although I consider this to be eurohouse or trance it crosses the lines of the dance music genre. Although I have to admit that in New York I have not heard too much of these wonderful songs. Buy it!!! and spread the word...

4 out of 5 stars Sunscreem...Greatest Hits!?!.......1999-02-10

After many releases from what could be perhaps the best in rave/pop rock fusion, Sunscreem is bringing the pulsating masses a greatest hits of sorts. Looking At You- Club Anthems covers their career musically, from the scorching debut O3 to their yet unreleased Out Of The Woods. Typical to a Sunscreem release, the atmosphere of the dance beats flows from blissful europhia to biting intelligence. Looking At You- Club Anthems serves a second function of importance as it's more or less the first full release to have common music merchant ground in the United States since O3. This cd allows the average long lost fan of Sunscreem back up and refresh themselves with the band's progress. Though Sunscreem's music almost seems to be perfect in total form, I must argue some with the format of Looking At You- Club Anthems. Perfect Motion, though a great song from O3, was not really deserving of 2 tracks on an 8 track release. Granted, the intro and the ending bit formed by Perfect Motion was grand and all, but the space could have been easily occupied by Pressure (UK or US version, take your pick) or White Skies. Also, a couple of more tracks would have been nice. Had it not been for these two minor faults, Sunscreem's Looking At You-Club Anthems would have scored an easy five stars. Still though, this release holds great merit and is a demand for anyone even halfway liking dance music. Love U More still retains it's marvelous shifts between moody to upbeat, the title track Looking At You is enchanting in the presented mix, and Exodus is intact and scoring on goove and flow perfection. Too well planned to be an "electronica of the month" band and too creative to be a "cut and dry mainstream club wonder", Sunscreem carries on in it's own way with this one. For the most part, Looking At You is a tribute to both the band's hard work and the needs of 'screemers out there.... up to date and long lost.

2 out of 5 stars A strange experience..........2003-11-03

They're both brilliant violinists but in very different genres, and Menuhin by his own admission never learned to improvise (unlike many of today's classical performers): he was trained in the post-Liszt, pre-jazz window when improvisation had died out in classical music and even cadenzas followed the score strictly (if Beethoven didn't write one, play Kreisler's). And it shows, rather painfully. He achieves a brilliant tone but that's about it: he plays these Broadway tunes completely "straight", and any student could do that equally well.

The CD is worthwhile for its curiosity value, but you'd get much better musical value buying Grappelli's jazz and Menuhin's classical recordings separately.

5 out of 5 stars Menuhin&Grappelli.......2002-08-17

Music just does not get any better than this CD! I am a musician and hearing these two artists is a thrill. This is a CD for all music lovers. You will not be sorry if you purchase this CD

5 out of 5 stars always a winning pair.......2001-01-29

You simply can't go wrong with a combination of two of the most talented violinists of our time. This cd is a wonderful showcase for them both and the choice of music is the greatest classics. It's a fun, winner of a cd.
