This product was worth buying if your into 60's music. I like the product and the music very good.
Great CD.......2007-07-17
Every song on this CD is great especially after seeing Jersey Boys you will be listening to this CD over and over again. I highly recommened it.
Great compilation CD.......2007-07-16
This CD is a great overview of the best hits of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Alot of great and familiar songs like Sherry, December 1963, Big Girls Don't Cry, etc. CD art has great pictures and a history of the group. There are also 3-4 songs done by Frankie Valli as a solo artist, like the popular song "Grease". If you like Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons or you're just beccoming interested in them, this is a great CD to have.
Brings back the good times..........2007-07-15
If you have fond memories of the 60's, and even if you don't, this music will make you sing! These songs were in the foreground and the background of our lives in those simpler times. I saw "Jersey Boys" on Broadway and this brings back that incredible sentimental journey back.
Listen and smile.
Best Ever.......2007-07-05
This is the greatest CD I have ever purchased. It takes me back to my teenage years. The songs on it are the best ever. I would reccomend this CD to everyone.

The Mamas and the Papas had a sound that helped define a portion of the 1960s. Their breezy folk classics had a bit of San Francisco psychedelia woven in, and, despite the sweet harmonies, there was also a noticeably dark feel to some of their more popular work. "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday" both utilized enough minors to give them a spooky edge. Greatest Hits is an essential part of any audiophile's collection, especially if they don't have the original recordings that spawned the hits. "Dedicated to the One I Love" is almost ironic for its tenderness, considering the turmoil that rumbled through the band's interrelationships. While John and Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty were all responsible for the success of the Mamas and the Papas, listening to this collection reveals that the late great Mama Cass was not only the heart but the soul of the band. Greatest Hits closes with her "Dream a Little Dream of Me," and serves as a touching tribute to Cass Elliot's talent. --Steve Gdula

A Must for Any Music Fan!.......2007-06-30
The Mamas & The Papas - who doesn't love their music? This CD is ESSENTIAL. 20 of their best loved hits and album tracks. What harmonies, singing, songwriting & production on these songs. The voices of Cass, Denny, John & Michelle eternally in unison on these amazing songs.
I love the biggest hits, as well as the album tracks & minor hits, like Denny's lead on DANCING BEAR, NO SALT ON HER TAIL, which should have been a single, and SAFE IN MY GARDEN - one of their last singles in 1968. And of course, their anthems CALIFORNIA DREAMIN', MONDAY MONDAY, GO WHERE YOU WANNA GO, and many more. LOOK THROUGH MY WINDOW is just majestic with Denny's lead, Cass & Michelle's backing vocals & the swirling strings. John Phillips wrote it, and it's one of their masterpieces, like MONDAY MONDAY is.
The best single disc Mamas & Papas CD around today.
Best Deal for Mamas and Papas.......2007-05-15
This is the best collection for the money. All their great songs!!
Harmonies and GREAT tunes make this a no-brainer........2007-04-20
The origin of the Mamas & the Papas is an interesting one, and for the most part us fans pretty much care mostly about what made them great: the music. When all is said and done, John Phillips has been regarded as a lot less of a talented songwriter than he truly was. When you can wake up in the middle of the night and force Michelle Phillips to write down the lyrics to a song that's been bouncing around your head for a few hours and it turns out to be "California Dreamin" you can consider yourself an accomplished songwriter (IMHO). That is easily the best song written basically while asleep since "Yesterday" by Paul McCartney.
While "California Dreamin" wasn't their all-time biggest chart topper, it is most assuredly the song that us fans think of most often when we read or hear about this amazingly talented Quartet. Drugs, alcohol and who knows what else very much contributed to a great deal of the problems and in some respects their eventual break-up, but NOBODY can seriously take away the impact that they have had over the years.
Personally I feel that Denny Doherty was one of the most underrated singers of the 60's. His talent on their signature song is unmistakable, and since his passing recently, will be sorely missed. As it stands, we now only have Michelle left of the original four members. All I can say is for the casual fans of the band, this is a great collection to have, and you will be amazed at the selection of songs that you probably haven't heard before that are assembled here. For the true Mamas & the Papas fans, it'll take you on an incredible trip down memory lane the way only great music can. I find that through specific songs I can remember obscure moments of my life that otherwise I honestly would have totally forgotten otherwise. Its an amazing medium and one I am fortunate to work in regularly.
While I didn't hit my teen years in the 60's, I was fortunate to have worked at an Oldies themed radio station for several years which helped me to really learn to love this music in a way I probably never would have in any other way. Give this CD a shot and get ready for hours--if not years of pure enjoyment.
The Mamas & The Papas - Greatst Hits.......2007-04-12
This CD brought back lots of old memories. I really enjoy listening to it.
Groovy People.......2007-04-05
What can you say that has'nt already been said? It's a timeless collection of great harmonies for the ages. You can't go wrong having this CD in your collection--it's really a MUST!

In 1987, RCA released a one-disc Elvis compilation called The Number One Hits that featured 18 tracks. So how did the label come up with 12 additional number ones (13 if you count the sensational "A Little Less Conversation" remix that brings the King into the 21st century as a bona fide dance/electronica star)? Well, the '87 compilation featured only Billboard number ones. "In the Ghetto" and "Burning Love" never reached the top there, nor did "Way Down," despite every copy of that 45 selling out on both sides of the Atlantic following Presley's 1977 death. Instead, the new compilers have used the major pop charts in both the U.S. (including Cashbox) and U.K. to determine inclusions. The tracks have all been remixed from original masters, which proves awesome at best (some of the songs have never sounded crisper if, at times, slightly antiseptic) and problematic at worst. Purists will definitely quibble. "A Fool Such As I," for instance, sounds like Elvis rerecorded his vocals. Hank Garland's great guitar solo also sounds different. It might be an alternate take. That's definitely the case with "The Wonder of You." A few lyrics are even different, meaning this isn't the same version as the original 45. Of course, none of that should matter to the youngsters who've been singing along to "Hound Dog" on the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, or to any other newcomers. Despite the complaints, this is arguably the best single disc Elvis primer to date. Real fans will want to explore much deeper for treasures to be found, but albums like this guarantee that this is one king who will deservedly live very long, if not forever. --Bill Holdship
Customer Reviews:
the elvis beat.......2007-06-15
I am very happy with this cd/it starts out early elvis and rocks all the way through as none other than Elvis could do...actually a good sound and certainly not a disappointment...I recommend this cd as a good purchase.
elvis 30 #1 hits.......2007-06-12
I justdo not think that this cd was properly remastered. Unlike elvis 2nd to none, which sounded great, the sound quality is lacking on this cd.
Phenomenal.......2007-05-28
What an incredible collection of music. I may even be in the minority, but I thought many of the songs on the Second to None CD were just as good, and in some case better, than many of the offerings here. To put both together provides some of the greatest sounding songs ever released. Elvis was more than just a singer and performer. He is truly an American Icon. His voice and music are timeless and the grea thing about this CD, is that it opened the door for a lot of listeners who may not have been familiar with the great songs that are classics now and will remain so. I think it may be about time for "Third Times a Charm" for those other gems that fell a little short of the other classics.
One of the Best !!!.......2007-04-11
This collection of Elvis' work is one of the BEST purchase values as far as content and cost go. We are part of the generation that grew up listening to him and were extremely pleased with this large selection of his hits. If you want most of the songs you are familiar with and ones that were his biggest hits, this album is the best bet for your money !!!
Golden treasures from 1956 to 1977.......2007-03-11
Unlike a lot of Elvis fans, this reviewer was but a child yet to enter school when the "King" passed away. Growing up, I had varying musical tastes and did enjoy some reruns on television of the films Elvis starred in. After a while I moved on to yet other interests in music, but eventually came back around to the one they call "The King" of Rock and Roll.
I'm not an Elvis Aficionado or expert, so if you want some fanatical Rain Man type repeater of his life or what was on his mind during the recording of a specific song, you will have to look elsewhere. What I will say is that what you see with this album is what you get. Every song is a #1 hit single, and there are 30 of them in all. Considering that you usually are lucky to get 20 songs for a maximum list on any CD, that in itself makes it something of value. 30 songs on a single CD that are also digitally remastered from their original recordings. That said, the remastering I feel is still great because although increasing and improving the sound, the album does not lose any of the raw, beautiful tones that make this music so timeless. The CD booklet has over 18 pages of photographs and commentary and features a nice timeline showing each song and when it was recorded. Some of the hits I'm enjoying right now at a glance are Heartbreak Hotel, All shook up, She's not you, and the pop sensation "Suspicious minds". If you are new to the music of Elvis Presley or someone who grew up with his music, I don't feel you can go wrong with purchasing "30" at all. It's a sunny day outside and hearing these songs gives me that feeling of enjoying the sounds, message and persona that is Elvis Presley.

It sometimes feels as though the Lovin' Spoonful have been reduced to a footnote in the history of rock & roll. Yet few of their contemporaries could match the likes of "Daydream," "Summer in the City," and the transcendent "Do You Believe in Magic?"--a song that can still turn January into June. Legend has it that the Spoonful auditioned for The Monkees, and they'd have been good in those roles, having the right candy-sweet sound and a warm humor in constant evidence. But it wouldn't have lasted: lead songwriter John Sebastian was too willful and idiosyncratic, coming on like an American Ray Davies on songs such as "Younger Generation," a prescient meditation on the hippie generation's future parental dilemmas. Greatest Hits is a fine 26-song introduction to a perennially underrated band. --Taylor Parkes
Customer Reviews:
Look for a bettern collection!.......2007-04-11
This collection was ok, but it seemed they were just trying to fill a cd. I would not say that it was a "greatest hits".
What I expected.......2007-04-10
CD came in a reasonable amount of time, and in excellent condition.
The one and the only: Lovin' Spoonful.......2007-04-02
The reviewers who simply group the Spoonful among all the other "good time" bands of the 60s, like the Turtles or the Grass Roots (etc.), simply don't know the musical history of these bands. First of all, the Spoonful, unlike many of these other bands, wrote ALL of their hits (primarily by the composer-ship of John Sebastian). Also: The Spoonful were one of the first of these bands to arrive on the scene, and just about all of their hits were produced in the time span of a brief two year period. The latter factor is probably why the Spoonful aren't better remembered: they split up before many of these other bands came to the forefront. With having had 5 top ten hits in 1966, the Spoonful were probably United States' biggest band that year next to the Beach Boys, and even The Beatles tried to imitate their sound (most notably with the failed effort, imo: Good Day Sunshine). The vocals of Sebastian and guitar playing of Zal Yanovsky were not only originally distinctive but are fun to try to imitate. I should know: their stylings were one of the key inspirations for my own current attempts at making music.
I recommend this as well as their four original albums (including their last album: "Everything Playing"), plus any of the pairings available of their two film soundtracks ("What's Up Tiger Lily?" and "You're a Big Boy Now"). BTW: Now that John Sebastian's infrequent solo releases have been finally re-released, I'd like to recommend the most under-rated of the bunch: what I suppose to contain the most Spoonful-inspired songwriting of the five: "Welcome Back" from 1975. After the Spoonful, Sebastian became a personal, introspective songwriter (following the pattern of the Spoonful song: "Younger Generation"). But "Welcome Back" seems to me his return to writing fun material more general in nature. Welcome Back Hopefully soon, Zal Yanovsky's only solo release will be available also: 1967's "Alive and Well In Argentina."
Still sounds good.......2007-03-09
If you used to love the Lovin' Spoonful, you'll particularily love "Do you Believe in Magic". What a great band.
Okay, I'm a bit biased, but this really IS a great CD.......2006-12-07
Having grown up listening to mostly rock-themed mid-70's thru 80's music, you can imagine my surprise when I was literally offered a job doing a morning show on an Oldies radio station some years ago. It was definitely not MY music, at least not what I chose to listen to on a regular basis. However the offer was too good to pass up, and I quickly discovered that unlike music of the past 30 years, the Baby Boomer generation that considered the 60's to be *Theirs* really, REALLY cared about the music and the details surrounding it like no other generation before -- or since. Face it, NOBODY cares on which day of the year Jessica Simpson recorded, well anything...but when you bring to the audiences attention that 'Summer In the City' by the Lovin' Spoonful went #1 for three weeks straight on This Day in R&R History in July of 1966, believe me THEY CARE. I can't exactly tell you why, but it's TRUE.
Ever since the Lovin' Spoonful hit the scene in the latter part of Summer 1965 with 'Do You Believe In Magic' they were a regular staple on the American charts. With their earlier ties to the more folksy Mamas & The Papas (members John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky were both members of the Mugwumps with Cass Elliot & Denny Doherty) to their eventual induction into the R&R Hall of Fame, this was a band that made a serious mark upon the turbulent 60's, and as such seriously affected millions of fans.
Even though they only scored 10 actual charted hits of note, ending with 'She Is Still A Mystery' in Nov. 1967) it is difficult to imagine just how much ground they covered in a very small amount of time. In barely two years, they made such a tremendous impact. Not many American (or British for that matter) bands can take credit for doing so much so quickly. Even though they stuck it out until disbanding in '68, it is difficult to measure their true impact upon the music scene at the time or how they have influenced it since, but one thing IS certain: they DID incite a great number of people to purchase millions of records. Call them pop or bubblegum, but just remember to add the phrase: VERY Successful to that. A truly GREAT American band that gave us fans what we wanted most of all: great tunes at a time when the country needed something, anything to take our minds off the concerns of the day. This collection is almost as perfect a collection as I have seen available. If you are a fan of the Spoonful, you owe it to yourself to include this CD in your collection.

The 22 tracks on Retrospective deftly chronicle the best years of the Animals, who were far and away the grittiest band in the British Invasion of the mid-1960s. Eric Burdon's magnificently raw vocals and the stabbing chords of Alan Price's Vox Continental organ gave their covers of American blues and R&B classic such as Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home" and John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" an authenticity that no other British groups could match. Their rough sound also gave songs like "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Got to Get of This Place" a real sense of rage and menace. By 1967 Burdon was the only remaining original member and he formed a new band that eschewed the blues and R&B of his early years in Newcastle in favor of a psychedelic, San Francisco-influenced sound. Songs like "When I Was Young" showed he had a real gift for the type of personal songwriting that was becoming popular in the late 1960s while the lyrically obscure "San Franciscan Nights" and "Sky Pilot" suggested he spent too much time hanging out with hippies. Even when they stumbled, the Animals were interesting, and when they hit the mark, they were as good as any band from the British Invasion. --Michael John Simmons

The Animals Retrospective.......2007-06-09
One of the best reissues of 2004 the Animals finally get a concise career spanning compilation that shows why they deserve the same recognition as the Rolling Stones. Retrospective is a generous 22 tracks that ends with "Spill The Wine" where Eric Burdon and War prove to be a great match. All the classics are here including "House Of The Rising Sun", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", and "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" as well as lesser known classics like "See See Rider" and "It's My Life" making Retrospective the perfect collection for casual fans as well as completists. Any rock fan should add this album to their collection.
time to give em their props.......2007-05-08
the Animals are probably the most underrated bands of that era. they are the most raw and gutsy of all the british bands incorporating the real blues and true grit in crafting of their body of work this cd is the Best , including hey gyp + dont bring me down ,among ALL their best including all the Eric Burden's acid days in San Fran
All the great Animals songs you remember and then some.......2007-05-01
The only compilation that had everything I wanted and remembered from their heyday. "Anything" surprised me and I've grown to like it. Of course, what Animals compilation would be complete w/o "House of the Rising Sun", "San Franciscan Nights", "Monterey" and definitely "Sky Pilot". If you want the most bang for your buck, this is it!
The best compilation of Animals.......2007-03-16
I think that in this compilation there are the most important songs of this band, and a young man who did'nt know the Animals, can appreciate their musical production.

This is Music!!.......2007-07-04
Pure and simple, they do not make music like this anymore. I have lived through the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. There are a few perfect moments in music in all of these decades. This CD represents many of the gems of music that shined in this decade, the 60's. They are to be cherished!!!

If only Sam Cooke were alive today !.......2007-07-20
Portrait of a legend was exactly what the title suggested. Sam Cooke is amazing and has the voice of an angel no matter what type of music he is singing. His sound is so very classy, upbeat and fun. His sound is a presentation of what all music could've been. If only he were still alive today, the wonderful music that might have been. The world lost one of it's most precious gifts when we lost Sam Cooke!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent tribute.......2007-07-20
Just look at the tracklist and you'll realize how many standards Sam Cooke sang first. This is the best of the collections of Cooke's work with both great sound and packaging. If you're wanting to recapture this part of your youth, this is a very good Cooke CD to get.
Sam Cooke.......2007-07-14
This CD is well worth the money. All of Cooke's big hits...plus some of his very early songs.
A real treasure.......2007-05-16
This album really hooked me on the awesome talent of Sam Cooke! I had listened over the years to Sam's many hits on the radio. I tried this album to catch some of my favorites. Wow, what a revelation! it is now one of my top three favorite CDs. I can't recommend it more.
After all these years, still the best. . . .......2007-05-13
Even though Sam Cooke has been gone for so many years, time has not diminished the quality and genius of his music. The songs still have
the same meaning as they did back in the day. The world lost him much too soon, but his music lingers on and entertains many of the younger generations. This CD is the best of the best!!

A brave effort at cramming one disc full of Temptations classics, The Ultimate Collection nevertheless makes a couple of puzzling choices. Why, for instance, include "Error of Our Ways," a very minor mid-'90s hit, and ignore "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" or "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)," both number ones from their classic period? Still, for the price, it's hard to argue with. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Sound is not as good as I had hoped for, but it has everything I wanted on it.......2007-07-05
I dislike any title "Ultimate" because ultimate really is in the ear of the listener, but this CD had everything I wanted from the Temptations on it. It only lost one star because it's touchy working in my MacIntosh and the sound quality in general is not as good as I hoped for.
Poor .......2007-06-01
I'm only a passing fan of The Temps, but wanted at least a "Greatest Hits" CD in my collection so they would have some representation.
While (most) of the songs I know and like are on the disc, the sound quality is abysmal... unless you want to hear it like it was on that mono transister radio you had back in 1971. As far as I can tell, there was no remastering done whatsoever. A disappointment.
hearing is believing.......2007-05-12
customers lose faith in vendors when they deliver defective merchandise. The CD would not perform in any player used. Vendors must earn a customer's trust by supplying reliable quality in the first place or standing up with ready replacements when they don't. This vendor did neither.
Oldies But Goodies.......2007-01-09
This CD is awesome! It contains most of their hit songs from back in the day! I recommend this CD to anyone who likes The Temptations.
The best of the best.......2006-11-10
The Temptations were Motown and this CD has their biggest hits and some that I had never heard before. Now I can say that I love everything the Temps did. The talent and voices are like majic. Otis Williams sure knew what he was doing when he put this group together.

No other Otis compilation quite satisfies the way the old double-LP best-of does, but never mind: any way you hear Redding's many great moments is a good one. The Very Best splits ballads and up-tempo stuff half-and-half, letting you hear the great one's humanity in every mood--the pile-driving rock of "Respect," the preaching fervor of "Try a Little Tenderness," the nascent reflection of "Dock of the Bay." A record collection with no Otis is a poor thing: here's yours. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
the very best of otis redding vol 1.......2007-05-12
The material brought me back to the late sixties 1968, with memories of his death, December of that year and the coming out of the Beatles White album that same month. It has been a long time since a performer was of his ilk.
One of the greats of soul .......2007-03-21
Otis Redding was one of the greats of soul. He was taken early at the age of twenty- six in a plane crash just three days after recording the song which would be his first number one on the charts, 'Sittin on the Dock of the Bay' That tremendous song is here. It has so much both in its lyric quality and the gripping power of its music. These are its lyrics" I heard it first many years ago and it has been playing in my mind ever since.
Sittin' in the morning sun
I'll be sittin' when the evening comes
Watching the ships roll in
Then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooh, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay wastin' time
I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the Frisco bay
'Cos I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothing's gonna come my way
So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooh, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay wastin' time
[...]
Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, listen
Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone, listen
2000 miles I've roamed
Just to make this dock my home
Now I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooh wee, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay wastin' time
There are also other outstanding works here. Redding reportedly did not want to do 'Try a Little Tenderness' but his version is an original and strong one.
The grainy coarseness of his voice was nonetheless lyrical, catching and upbeat in its way.
This is 'Soul Music ' at its best.
CAN'T BE BEAT!!.......2007-01-10
Otis Redding is another of the "great voices" of the past!! His music is unforgettable!! And it's "superb"!! You can't go wrong with this CD...I'll bring you alot of joy & relaxation!! Try it...you'll like it - Guaranteed!!
If you like Otis, you'll love this!.......2007-01-10
So many times I see movies and love the music; only to find out it is Otis Redding. This cd has his best, and you will recognize virtually every song. I love it.
Otis at his best.......2006-11-05
I have always liked Otis Redding. When I listened to the sample tracks on Amazon, I knew that I had to have this CD. It is timeless and I can listen to it and Al Green, over and over. Buy it.

Customer Reviews:
My 1st Monkee LP!.......2007-07-19
I don't have this Rhino Complilation. Rather, I'm reviewing my ALBUM (complete with pops & clicks which I LOVE!) I played this on my totable Brown Westinghouse turntable. Mike starts with You Told Me. Then Mickey sings Spend My Life With You. Davy: Forget That Girl. a quickie called Band 6!Mike's turn: You Just May Be The 1. A worn out tune with Shades of Grey. Davy again with a vaudeville type a diddy called Can't Gets Her Off Of My Mind. Side 2 jams with Mickey's For Pete's Sake. Mick again with the spooky Mr. Webster. Mike YEEHAS with Sunny Girlfriend. A silly piece called Zilch! Then Mick really rocks with No Time! Davy sings about Early Morning Blues & Greens(I made up my own words when I was stuck on a lousy vaca). Then Mickey concludes with Randy Scouse Git. My youngest cousin & I saw when the Monkess Reunited(sans Nesmith) in '86. She was yelling for Davy & I'm partial to Dolenz. Lots of recent & classic memories! Actually: this is the 1st full fledged Monkee project where they ALL played their own insruments (altho Peter/Mike always played Guitar.) BRAVO!
I wanted to write a nasty review, but it's really superb .......2007-07-16
This deluxe edition of Headquarters is so nicely done (much like the first two in this series), I honestly couldn't write anything nasty. It's been presented with love and care.
The sound quality is great in both mono & stereo. It's very similar in sound quality to the Beatles Capitol Records releases that just came out recently. The bonus material is entertaining, as well as strong, I also loved some of the stuff I'd never heard before. The booklet is also really good, with lots of rare photos and the in depth story of the making of this album.
The overall packaging is very classy. It makes me hope that The Beatles get this kind of treatment through Apple records, or my favorite band, Deep Purple get this sort of stunning re-packaging from Rhino.
I grew up on the mono versions of the Monkees albums, all the way up to their fifth album "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees" in April 1968, so I was really thrilled to see that mono finally made it to CD. I've always thought that the mono mixes were better overall, giving an overall impression of a heavier rock band sound. Though, I got the feeling that the Headquarters mono mix was a fold down of the stereo mix. As for the stereo mastering, it sounded brighter than the original Rhino CD's, with some added compression, and the signal might have been pushed harder than the older Rhino discs. But on the whole, a wonderful job. Let's hope the next two albums (released in mono & stereo) get this same kind of royal treatment.
Sure they seem to be milking the Monkee-cow, but when it's this strong, milk it baby. Next up, The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees?
