5 out of 5 stars The High and the Mighty.......2007-05-05

Despite what some say, this album represents the pinnacle of songwriting for The Eagles. "I Can't Tell You Why" is easily in the running for the greatest slow rock recording of all time. I absolutely love the overall tone they came up with in the studio for this one. Get over yourself and your musical prejudices, listen to the music, and let yourself enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars An album that the band didn't want to make.......2007-04-01

The band had decided to end their run after Hotel California but being big sellers and under contract the band had to come up with something(according to Don, Glen and Joe). Well the first thing to happen was Randy left and decided to not come back so in came Tim. The band then came up with an album that sounds very late '70's. Not all the songs on here are bad but this is the band's most hit and miss album since their first. The highlights being The Long Run, I Can't Tell You Why, In the City and The Sad Cafe. The rest is, for the most part, a miss.

3 out of 5 stars The Eagles Album That Broke Up The Band.......2007-02-08

The pressure to follow up the ultra successful "Hotel California" was enormous on The Eagles, and would prove to be their undoing. "The Long Run" sessions went on and on with the band continually trying to reach perfection in it's compositions. The resulting tensions eventually would split the band for two decades. The album that came out of these sessions was good, but not on the same level as "Hotel California". "The Long Run" pretty much abandons what was left of the band's early country rock sound. Randy Meisner is gone with Timothy B Schmit brought in on bass and vocals. There were several huge hits from this disc, but for the most part I find them the weakest songs on the album. "The Long Run", "Heartache Tonight", "I Can't Tell You Why" are all decent songs I guess, but none of them are anything special. Some of the album cuts are pretty mediocre too. Henley's "Those Shoes" is ok, but again nothing special, "Teenage Jail" is decent, and "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" is the Eagles attempt at a novelty tune complete with Jimmy Buffett on background vocals. Again, it is ok for what it is, but certainly does not rank up with the bands best stuff. There are some highlights here though. Joe Walsh's "In The City" is a great tune. It was also used, in a slightly different version, for "The Warriors" movie soundtrack. If I remember correctly the movie version was a minor hit for Walsh. "Disco Strangler" is a cool little Henley tune, and Frey's "King Of Hollywood" creates a portrait of an entertainment sleezeball fits the music perfectly. The album closer "The Sad Café" is another good one, and kind of sums up where the band was at by this point. It's searching and longing theme would pop up again over and over in Henley's solo career. In the end instead of The Eagles going out on a high note, "The Long Run" proved to be a rather average album. Not terrible by any means, but not nearly as good as "Hotel California"

4 out of 5 stars A few keepers here...and a few that leave me asking, "What the...?".......2007-01-11

So this was not the best Eagles album of all time. Even Babe Ruth didn't hit a home run every time he came to bat. But what this offers is a look at what happens just before a great band becomes several solo artists. A collection of good, great and just plain awful songs stitched together in a patchwork quilt suicide note. The title tune is both pleasant and forgetable. The two memorable cuts, "I Can't Tell You Why" and "Heartache Tonight" have been ear-worms for me many times. But the best songs here never received much recognition. The sexual politics, exploitation and power described so chillingly in both "King of Hollywood" and "Those Shoes" make me wonder whether these guys were on the giving or receiving end of these "quid pro quo" transactions in real life. "In the City" and "Sad Cafe" are haunting and melancholy. "In the City" paints a lyrical picture of the desperation of urban life wrapped around the restlessness of youth. "Sad Cafe" could have been the about the same young dreamers after years of defeat and disappointment. It is a lament of wasted time, settling for less and resignation to the status quo. The rest of the songs on here just take up space on the vinyl. What were these guys thinking when they recorded "Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" and "The Disco Strangler?"

4 out of 5 stars A Daring And Interesting Album.......2006-10-23

Okay. You've just had one of the most successful and heralded albums of the decade, and you've graduated from being just another successful country rock band to the undisputed kings of the genre. So from here, where do you go? In many ways, it doesn't seem as the Eagles really knew what they wanted to do. Don Henley and Glenn Frey were stubborn but focused on the future of the Eagles - or, perhaps, the non-future of the Eagles. It took three years and ample infighting to produce this album, with 4 different songwriters producing material for the group. Two of the contributors, Tim Schmit and Joe Walsh, were accomplished solo artists themselves and at this stage, were merely a part of the band, while Henley and Frey both saw themselves as the heart and soul. The fact that they both feel that way shines through in the disparate styles of this album. "Heartache Tonight" and "The Long Run" tend to embody Frey's plan - country rock leanings to continue; while "These Shoes", "Teenage Jail" and "King Of Hollywood" represent Henley's darker vision. Schmit's contribution, "I Can't Tell You Why" is a lovely AC song, and Walsh's "In The City" is his take on Henley's cynical views of California. While the surface of this album seems to represent unevenness and a lack of clarity, when you understand how the band was growing apart, it actually reads more as a defining moment in their history - and a fitting conclusion to their days of recording in the studio together.

Neil Young's songs from this ill-fated collaboration are widely regarded as toss-offs, but the disc does contain three or four swell Young tunes. The title track is among his finest work from the mid-'70s, with its generous pop hook wrapped in shambling rhythms, laconic pace, nostalgic subject matter, and subtle, country-fried accents. The slow, powerful "Fountainebleau"--a story of rock-star hotel decadence--is "Powderfinger"-ish with some of Young's most nimble-fingered fretwork ever, and his vocals on "Midnight on the Bay" are stunningly on key. Unfortunately, Stephen Stills's musical muse was more than burnt out by the time this record was made, and "Guardian Angel" sounds like the cast of Godspell on a very off day. "Make Love to You," with its faux-soul keyboard runs, Stills's dying-moose moans, and the insanely cheesy "Hey baby, I just wanta make love to you"-type lyrics, sounds so ridiculous one half-expects Chef from South Park to jump out from behind the speakers, crooning into his spoon to an imaginary sexy lady. This album went gold, but luckily "The Stills-Young Band" was never heard from again after this messy, one-sided affair. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Long Overdue in CD Format.......2007-06-20

I waited a long time to find this on CD. What an awesome album. Anyone who enjoys solo albums by either Neil Young or Stephen Stills will love the songs here.

2 out of 5 stars Still Awful.......2007-01-13

I took this turkey out again and listened to it recently. Yes, really the title track and Fountainbleau are the only decent tracks. The rest is dull and boring. Steven Stills convinces us once and for all that he is totally out to lunch (read the Neil bio "Shakey" if you have any doubts).

A sidebar in Neil Young's long and bumpy career.

4 out of 5 stars Alternate Version of Title Track by CSNY on Young's DECADE.......2006-08-21

I got this CD to get some additional Stills and Young classics for my collection of CSNY, and noted that the song LONG MAY YOU RUN is different than on Neil Young's Decade collection. On Decade, Neil notes that it is with CSNY, while this version has had Crosby and Nash's vocals removed, and some extra Stephen Stills added. Some great classic tunes here, including Still's Make Love To You and Young's Midnight On The Bay.

4 out of 5 stars NOT A FIRST LISTEN WINNER, BUT A GROWER........2006-02-23

I have lived with this release for close to 30 years and there are two things wrong with this release. The first is that their other two associates(Crosby,Nash), were just wrapping up their masterpeice 5 star release "Wind on the Water", as it suffers by comparison. The second is that both Crosby and Nash contributed their vocals to this project and the two principles had the bad sense to wipe those vocals prior to release.

All the negative reviews initially with the press were due to expectations that were looking for a CSNY album. or worse a return of the Springfield. Please!!!

When evaluated on it's own merits this is a damn good record. True Stills was writing mostly lame material at this time but I think that this material is his strongest and most soulful stuff since the first Manassas album. The people who are saying that Neil's stuff is so much stronger on this project are full of it. "12/8 Blues" and "Black Coral" are very solid songs and Neil's very presence pushes Stills to try harder. Proof of this is that his songwriting went right down the dumper again after this and the "CSN" reunion record. If "Midnight on the Bay" is a throw-away it is one of the best all-time leftovers and it has one of Neil's best lead vocals ever. I dock it a star for not having those guitar duels although some dope faded out the album as the sparks were about to fly on "Guardian Angel" another good Stills song.

We may have wanted more of it but to say there is no collaboration is just not true. Stills gives us a beautiful solo on Neil's "Midnight..." Neil can be easily heard on Stills'"Make Love..." and these guys always sound good singing together. The band was also perfect for this project. Great keyboards add to the soulful/summery/jazzy feel of the record. Neil produced the "classic" title track and another great track in "Fountainbleu" but in my opinion he also produced the only truly weak track on the album,"Let it Shine" as sloppy a vocal as he is capable of.

Neil will always be one of my favorites but the special nature of this album comes in the subtleties of the colaboration between. Subtle is not always good in rock & roll but it works here and he DID NOT do it alone..

Now you want a 5 star CSNY album from the mid-seventies ? Buy this and then get "Wind on the Water". Talk about a great beach album. Voila !

Album Description

From "Orlando" to "The Tango Lesson" and onward, director Sally Potter has always been closely involved with the soundtracks to her films--with outstanding results. This score for "Yes" is no different, as it weaves diverse music--including Philip Glass, Gustavo Santaolalla, Kronos Quartet, "Fawn" (by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan), and Eric Clapton with BB King--into both a superb tapestry for this motion picture and as a compelling listening experience on its own.

Further original music by Sally Potter was made with the participation of long-term collaborator, the celebrated guitarist, composer and improviser Fred Frith, who has played on Sally's last four films. Frith has composed for Ensemble Modern and Asko Ensemble amongst others. Best known world-wide as an improvising guitarist, he played on albums ranging from The Residents and Reni Lussier to Brian Eno and Amy Denio.

4 out of 5 stars An aural journey through diverse cultures.......2005-06-28

Quite an eclectic mix of artists and music. I am not sure this CD is for everyone...

From hypnotic instrumentals to howling blues to middle eastern influenced dances to chill dance grooves to classical piano to latin salsa, the soundtrack takes you on an aural journey through diverse cultures. I'm sure it reflects the culture clash depicted in the movie's storyline.

Listening to the sample tracks (at Barnes & Noble.com) makes me wish that I lived in a more culturally diverse area... This is the type of movie I have to watch on DVD because theaters won't risk showing independent films here.

To find the sample tracks at B&N search for "Yes" as the title, then sort the results by "date released". Since it just came out, it should be near the top of the list. Enjoy.

BTW, my 4-star rating is based only on the sample tracks I was able to hear.

4 out of 5 stars 1st Place For This "Run".......2002-05-19

The rollicking, surviving tenor saxophonist of the Charlie Hunter Quartet, Ellis proves he has plenty of ideas on his second solo record. The bright, playful sounds he brought to the Quartet are all here, along with a solid grasp of arrangements. Ellis is in excellent company with a powerhouse of a group that includes Dmitri Metheny on flugelhorn.

5 out of 5 stars Near Perfect Jazz Recording by Best of the Young Tenors.......2000-12-23

Dave Ellis' follow-up recording to "Raven", which is probably my favorite tenor sax instrumental ensemble of the past 10 years, definitely did not let me down. Ellis continues in relative obscurity in comparison to a lot of the "young lion" tenors, but excels where many of them fall short. Ellis is savy, improvisational and his band is extremely tight. He has a knack for taking a cover tune and making it his own. That is a rarity in jazz today. Check this album out, as well as "Raven" at all costs... It is a must have for any jazz collector.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Ellis is Awesome!.......2000-07-29

In The Long Run is one of the best CDs I have ever purchased. I purchased this cd after purchasing Raven from Dave himself. I think his music is influenced upon his personality. Dave is a really cool guy and he makes great music. I especially like his personal compositions such as Meltdown. All in all if you are looking for some classic jazz with a modern touch buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Ellis is absolutely perfect!.......1998-12-23

I purchased this album after attending one of Dave's concerts during the summer tour of The Other Ones. He has the ability to blend seamlessly with veteran psychedelic musicians while breathing his own artisitic statements into the mosaic. Listening to this album truly relaxes the soul.
