5 out of 5 stars It's More Than Worth The Money.......2007-06-21

"The Best of The Girl Groups, Vol. 1" is a really well-chosen, well-reproduced Rhino compilation of some of the greatest of the girl group sounds from their pop music era, the early 1960s. It lacks some of the most influential groups, those of Berry Gordy's Motown, Phil Spector's Gold Star Studios, and Philadelphia's Cameo, but there's still a wealth of fondly-remembered music here.

As is typical of the period when girl groups were at their height, those Brill Building gnomes have their fingerprints all over this album. There are three Shangri-La songs, "Leader of The Pack," "Remember (Walking in the Sand)," and "Give Him a Great Big Kiss." Credit Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry with the writing; the mysterious George (Shadow) Morton with the production, throbbing motorcycle sounds and big sloppy kisses on the soundtrack. These songs all told little stories, and they lifted the Shangri-Las, four tough-sounding girls-- the Weiss sisters and the Ganser sisters, actually twins-- from Queens, New York well out of the ordinary.

Four Bronx girls, the Chiffons, have "He's So Fine" (the song the Beatles's late George Harrison unwittingly rewrote as "My Sweet Lord"), and "One Fine Day" here: their "Sweet Talking Guy" is in Vol.2. Mind you, I've seen the Chiffons perform, at New York's South Street Seaport, and I can tell you those girls still love to make music. The Shirelles have three songs here: Carole King's famous "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," Burt Bacharach's "Baby It's You," and "I Met Him on a Sunday." I've managed to see Shirley Alston Reeves, their former lead singer too, with backup singers, for sure; and she can still punch them out, I promise you. That New Orleans girl group, the Dixie Cups, has two songs here, the world-famous "Chapel of Love," and the melodic, though lesser-known, "People Say." Both written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, with Phil Spector an additional writing credit on "Chapel;" both produced by Leiber and Stoller. You'll also find two mysterious, haunting songs of the era, the Jaynetts' "Sally Go Round The Roses," and Claudine Clark singing her own "Party Lights." The Ad-Libs' "Boy from New York City," a pure Brill Building product. Betty Everett's "Shoop Shoop Song;" now much better known as "It's in His Kiss," as sung by Cher. Cher's early "Dream Baby" is also here; production is credited to Sonny Bono; but as both these artists began their music careers working for Phil Spector, it sure has Spector's sound, if not his signature.

Many, if not most, listeners will have a few favorites that just aren't here: I wish the Dixie Cups' "Iko Iko," a real African-influenced, New Orleans sound, heard on the soundtrack of that entertaining New Orleans-set movie "The Big Easy," had been included. But what is here is more than worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Bring back girl groups............2007-03-28

This Cd brought back a lot of memories of the 60's. Listening to them on AM radio in the summer on the beach at Coney Island or seeing them on Ed Sullivan.None of the radio stations play this music anymore. Who wants to pay for satelite? This music made life fun!

4 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining, 60's Pop Driving Music........2007-02-04

This has 18 songs & is roughly 45 minutes long. The sound quality is a bit mediocre at times, but these are quality tunes, & not just the well known big hits. Here you have "People Say," by the Dixie Cups, The Shirelle's "Baby It's You," the Jaynettes"Sally Go Round The Roses." Which sounds half psychodelic before the term became common. There is even a young Cher singing "Dream Baby." This compellation should stir the appetite of even a casual listener to find more tunes from that eclectic era of music.

5 out of 5 stars This is what pop SHOULD be.......2006-05-08

Light, effervescent, fun, and with a ton of musicianship and creativity. Qualities that seem to have gotten lost in pop music for the most part. This is NOT just for baby boomers: this is for anybody who appreciates great melodies, and most of all, music that's sweet, fun, yet stunningly powerful.Even those of us who weren't even born when these songs were on the charts. There's a whole cd full of great stuff here, but the Shangri-La's tracks absolutely make this cd what it is. Leader of the Pack might have been overplayed, but in its day it was an extremely imaginative bit of pop fluff. The Shangri-La's always sounded like what they were: teenage girls having the time of their lives, and that's what makes their music so charming today. The tracks by the Dixie Cups are also absolutely stunning. Their harmonies sound like they're floating on a cloud. Will You Love Me Tomorrow is the most stunning for its maturity. The Cher track is also interesting. I've never personally been a fan of her music, but she sounds great here. The liner notes say that the production on Dream Baby was done by Sonny Bono, but it sounds like a Phil Spector production. All of these songs are gems. Little 2 and 3 minute slices of heavenly pop. The perfect antidote to the overheated, over-produced, over-exposed pop of Britney Spears and the like. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars soo much fun!.......2006-03-14

We knew some of these songs but not all and we were impressed by the selection and the sound quality of the selections. A great way to look back on a bygone era.

5 out of 5 stars Girl Groups Vol 2.......2007-06-27

more great sixties music, i play it in the car and sing all the time when i am not playing vol 1

5 out of 5 stars More from the Great Age of Girl Groups.......2007-06-20

Rhino Records finishes what it started with "The Best of the Girl Groups, Vol.2," giving us another good-sounding, good collection of girl group standards, some better-known than others, from the Great Age of the Girl Groups, the early 1960's, before the British Invasion drove the girls from the charts. And once again, the melodic hand of those Brill Building songwriters is much in evidence.

The collection opens with The Angels' hit, "My Boyfriend's Back." This is a pretty white bread-sounding song; and believe me --I've seen them-- the Angels were kind of a white bread group. But the lyric is pretty flavorful: legend says the songwriter, at a diner, just wrote down a waitress's outburst at a guy who'd obviously pushed her too far. "Sweet Talking Guy," by the Chiffons, follows; plenty of Bronx flavor to this one. I've also seen them perform, and let me tell you, these were girls who still got a kick out of singing, and hitting those notes. Then follows a great dancing song, "The Locomotion," sung by Little Eva, whom, legend says, was the maid of Carole King, who wrote it with her usual partner, Gerry Goffin. Carole King also sings "It Might As Well Rain Until September," the only one of her many creations on which she, herself, had the hit. Ellie Greenwich, another Brill Building regular, much better known as a songwriter than performer, sings her own "You Don't Know." The Toys give us a song I particularly loved, and still do, "Lovers Concerto;" legend says the immortal classical composer Friedrich Handel ("Music for the Royal Fireworks") gave them the music for that one. The Cookies contribute two more dance numbers -- those girls could rock: "Chains," and "Don't Say Nothing Bad About My Baby." Those perennial favorites, the Shirelles, give us "I Met Him on a Sunday." The Exciters give us another good dancing song, "Tell Him," and Essex comes in with another one, "Easier Said Than Done."

Once again, there are no representatives from Motown, Phil Spector's Gold Star Studios, or Philadelphia's Cameo Studios, and that leaves out a lot of great songs. The selection of songs on Vol. 2 is also not quite up to that on the first volume, but it still brings together a lot of songs that a lot of people love, and haven't been able to find. Worth getting if the budget allows.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the 60s.......2007-05-18

Most of these songs are goodies from the 60's...2 or 3 songs were completely unknown to me, but the others made up for it...I know all the words!! (of course I'm over 13....that's why I know all the words!)

4 out of 5 stars Girl Groups.......2007-05-13

Well done, original artists, good fidelity. Well worth the price! Buy and enjoy.

This 16-track disc and its companion piece (Volume 2) do a great job of recapitulating Aretha's singles career at Atlantic. Some of the most compelling music ever recorded, these sides bring forth the best of one of the great singers. Whether all but rewriting "Respect" ("That girl stole my song," an admiring Otis Redding said) or barely masking the pain behind "Call Me," she tells some of the truest stories around. And what a piano player. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ARETHA FRANKLIN IS THE BEST!.......2005-11-08

Whenever I go to the Longmont Public Library, I always get the CD, The Very Best Of Aretha Franklin. I would take it home, put it in my stereo and play it. I feel in love with all the songs. I am going to rate the songs one by one from a scale of 1 to 5. There are times I will go over the 1 to 5 scale:

1.RESPECT: I give this song a 8/5 because I love the words and how Aretha sings it. She sings it with such clarity, emotion and power. This song swept me off my feet and I love to sing along with it.

2.BABY I LOVE YOU: I give this song a 7/5 because I love to move to it. The words and the tune sounds great!! I'd be singing along with it and began to dance to it. It would be hard to sit still or not sing along with the song.

3.I NEVER LOVED A MAN: I give this song a 7/5 because I love to move and sing along with it. The background music is awesome and quite electrifying. I esppecially love the sound of the guitars!!!!

4.CHAIN OF FOOLS: I give this song a 8/5 because I LOOVE the beginning part of the song to the end. The story is very realizitic because many women have fell love with men that they so caught up in into them that they are blind to the fact that the men are no good, errogant users that take love for granted. The friends of the women whose going out that with those types of men always warn them that they are no good and the women should go out with them.Aretha tells about how much she still love her man in spite of the fact that people saw something bad in him that she was too blind by love to see. She was literally her boyfriend's CHAIN OF FOOL.

5.DO RIGHT WOMAN-DO RIGHT MAN: I give this song a 8/5 because I love the words and the sound to it. The part I like is "Woman's only human. You should understand. She's not just a play thing but flesh and blood just like her man. If you want a do right, all days woman, you gotta be a do right, all night man."

6.(YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE)A NATURAL WOMAN: I give this song a 8/5 because it is so beautiful and peaceful. I find myself singing along with this song. In the song, Aretha is telling the man how much he menas to her and what he has done for her.

7.(SWEET SWEET BABY): I give this song a 6/5 because I love the song.Aretha does a wonderful job singing about this song.

8.AIN'T NO WAY: I give this song a 5/5 because even though I heard and like the song, I don't remember about how the song or the tune goews.

9.THINK: I give this song a 8/5 because I love the words and the tune. I love how Aretha adds sassiness to the song as she demands respect from her trifling boyfriend. The part I like is "You better think. Think about whatcha try to me. Yeah, let's think. Just let yourself be because FREE-DOM, FREE-DOM, FREE-DOM, FREE-DOM! OH,FREE-DOM, FREE-DOM, FREE-DOM, FREE-DOM! I love singing that part of the song.

10.SEE SAW: I give this song a 8/5 because I love this song. The words, the sound and Aretha's voice makes this song phemononal and awesome. My favorite part is "Your love is like a see-saw. Your love is like a see-saw, baby. You love is like a see-saw. Going up,down all around." I love singing that part as well as the whole song.

11.THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT: I give this song a 8/5 because I love the words and tune to the song. I enjoy singing along with the song. I feel soory for Jack because he's such a hard worker in building that house that bad things came upon him. So right after he finished building the house, he left seeking a better life somewhere else.

12.I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER: I give this song a 7/5 because I love this song. I love how the music and the words flows together as Aretha sings the song.

13.THE WEIGHT: I give this song a 8/5 because I love this song. Aretha does an awesome job singing the song and I love the music (esppecially the guitars!!!) behind her voice, which makes the song phenomonal.

14.ELEANOR RIGBY: I give this song a 6/5 because I love how the words and the music flow together as Aretha sings her song about Eleanor Rigby

15.SHARE YOUR LOVE WITH ME: I give this song a 5/5 because I like the song. I don't remember a whole lot about the song.

16.CALL ME: I give this song a 5/5 because it's a great song. Even though I heard it, I don't remember much about the song.

Total score: 112/80. This is a great CD. If anybody love the early projects of Aretha Franklin, you should get this CD. I know I need to buy the CD myself since I always check the CD from the Public LIbrary. I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars They don't call her, "Lady Soul" for nothin'........2005-09-08

Since I don't know a better way to review this, I'll do the rate-the-song-on-a-scale-of-one-to-ten gag.
1. Respect: 10/10. How can you not rate this a 10?
2. Baby I Love You: 10/10. Listen to that VOICE!
3. I Never Loved A Man (The Way That I Love You): 10/10. With the help of her voice and incredible backup vocals, she turns a cliche into something awesome.
4. Chain of Fools: 11/10. My favorite, it's a great slice of proto-funk.
5. Do-Right Woman, Do-Right Man: 9/10. Still good, but doesn't quite do it for me.
6. (You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman: 8/10. If it weren't overly orchestrated, this would be a 10.
7. (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone: 10/10. Great song.
8. Ain't No Way: 10/10. Best of the slower songs.
9. Think: 10/10. Again, listen to that VOICE!
10. See Saw: 7/10. It's okay.
11. The House That Jack Built: 10/10. Second-best song. Have you noticed how unlucky this Jack guy is? Come on, bad stuff happens to him here, on Ray Charles' Hit the Road Jack, AND on Steely Dan's Do It Again.
12. I Say a Little Prayer: 8/10. Good not great.
13. The Weight: 10/10. Incredible guitar and, as usual, vocal performance.
14. Eleanor Rigby: 3/10. Really dumb.
15. Share Your Love With Me: 10/10. Another amazing song.
16. Call Me: 5/10. Another one I don't like.
This is good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars This Is Truly An All Time Great CD!!.......2002-07-15

When I played this CD in my car...my mother asked for it, so I had to buy another Vol. 3-Very Best of Aretha Franklin! My mother and I agreed that they simply don't make songs like this any more. Aretha's CD brought back wonderful memories of the 60's. Today, we listen intent to exactly what Aretha was saying in these musical messages. We now understand Aretha's songs better than in the past. The music is wonderful, the background voices are majestical. What a wonderful combination of words, messages, instruments and singing. Yes, lay back - listen and enjoy this wonderful CD...They just don't make them like this anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Ambassador of Love.......2002-02-08

To me Aretha was an ambassador of love when i heard this CD. All My troubles go away when I listen to her sweet loving songs. They're soulful and romantic but most of all full of self respect. And what could that emanate more than love. Not violence, not dark depressive singin'.
I'm glad to be celebrating life in this world that produced Miss Aretha. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars SOUL MAGIC.......2002-02-06

Like all RHINO's best of,this is a commandable collection of ARETHA's works in her early days at ATLANTIC.RESPECT,YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE A NATURAL WOMAN and I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER(marvelous cover of the BACHARACH-DAVID song ,first recorded by DIONNE WARWICK)can be considered the highlights, but everything deserves to be there.ELEANOR RIGBY is my only complaint(RAY CHARLES's cover is great). If all the best of collections could be of the quality of those at RHINO,it would be heaven on this earth.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2006-01-12

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

1 out of 5 stars If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

Released in 1992 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of Dr. No, this two-disc set still stands as the ultimate Bond music collection. Disc one includes all of the hit songs from the Bond films, including Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger," Tom Jones's "Thunderball," Paul McCartney & Wings' "Live & Let Die" and Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only." Disc two includes Louis Armstrong's lovely "We Have All the Time in the World," as well as a nice collection of rarities (Anthony Newley's demo of "Goldfinger"), lesser-known orchestral cuts from Goldfinger and Thunderball, and radio ads for You Only Live Twice, Thunderball, and Live & Let Die. The perfect accompaniment for a martini built for two. Shaken not stirred, of course! --Dan Epstein

5 out of 5 stars 007 forever and ever.......2007-05-13

whether played by Sean CONNERY, Roger MOORE, George LAZENBY, Timothy DALTON, Pierce BROSNAN, Daniel CRAIG, or even by David NIVEN in the sixsties comedy 007 CASINO' ROYALE (1967), James BOND is the greatest spy ever!!! So it's his music!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of James Bond 30th Anniversary.......2007-02-11

Wonderful music, an enjoyment for any James Bond fan.

3 out of 5 stars Good effort..........2007-02-09

The 1st cd is the most enjoyable (vocal track's)...the 2nd start's out listenable and then seem's to bog down with very repetative formula's.

5 out of 5 stars A CD No James Bond Fan Should Be Without........2007-01-13

As someone who has been a huge James Bond since before he could walk, you can bet I love every aspect of the films, including the music. Many of the theme songs to the films are classics, while the ones that have slipped under the radar remain awesome underrated numbers.

In 1992, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of 1962's "Dr. No", the 2 cd "The Best Of James Bond" was released. Itr included all the theme songs for the movies from 1962's "Dr. No" up to 1989's "License To Kill", as well as a second disc of rarities.

This is an excellent compilation that all 007 fans must have in their collection. You get all the classic Bond themes, such as Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger", Paul McCartney & Wings' "Live And Let Die", Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better", Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only", and Duran Duran'a "A View To A Kill", as well as some lesser heard but equally great songs, such as Nancy Sinatra's luscious theme for "You Only Live Twice", Bassey's sexy rendering of "Diamonds Are Forever" and her mysterious, sweet "Moonraker", Lulu's thrilling "The Man With The Golden Gun", Rita Coolidge's glorious "All Time High", and a-ha's excellent "The Living Daylights". There are a few rough spots (Tom Jones' over the top "Thunderball" and Gladys Knight's awful "License To Kill"), but other than that, it's a nearly flawless compilation.

The second disc is a great treat for hardcore Bond fans. For starters, you get several radio spots for "You Only Live Twice", "Thunderball" and "Live And Let Die", some great instrumental scores, two different recordings of the scrapped "Thunderball" theme song "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (sung by Dionne Warwick and Shirley Bassey, respectively), Anthony Newley's boring but coll to have early demo of "Goldfinger", and best of all, Louis Armstrong's absolutely beautiful "We Have All The Time In The World", one of the loveliest songs in music.

It's true that there were Bond films made after 1992 (five to be exact). But as far as their theme songs go, only Tina Turner's theme for "Goldeneye" and Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" (from the recent "Casino Royale"), are worth having. My advice is to get this excellent two cd and download the 2 later numnbers. Then, you will truly have all the best of James Bond.

4 out of 5 stars If you like the movies, you'll like the music.......2006-08-27

5 out of 5 stars I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11

This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.

I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.

"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.

4 out of 5 stars MarMSED.......2005-08-27

The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.

3 out of 5 stars Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24

Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.

The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.

Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.

Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars Reading about Paganini.......2007-01-25

Fans of Paganini should read Julian Livingston's novel, Paganini-The Vampire Career. In this book, P.T. Barnum has sent Henry Feder to Europe to seek out a new violinist, Nicolaties, more than 40 years after Paganini died without last rites. Nicolaties looks, performs, behaves like Paganini. Could it be him? Lots of technical references to music, as Mr. Livingston is a musician and has written 2 operas. A very interesting book for musicians, vampire lovers, and macabre 19th century European tales.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected Delights.......2001-03-16

I bought this CD after hearing of the legend of Paganini - the devil on his shoulder, the playing that made people faint, the Marfan-syndrome affected joints that allowed impossible finger contortions, the immense crowds that adored him, as they did Liszt at the piano. What I expected was to hear impossible violin artistry at work, which was definitely fulfilled. What I did not expect, however, were the marvelous interludes between the violin solos. Paganini's concerti are unlike those of Beethoven and Brahms, as the violin completely dominates the attention. But the power of the full orchestra was unexpected. These are true violin showpieces, to be certain, but they are also marvelous bits of music - when the full orchestra blasts in you can't help but smile.

5 out of 5 stars An unearthly hand guides his bow.......2000-08-13

"The Devil guides his bow " was what audiences said when they heard the fast fingers of Nicolo Paganini as he performed his various Caprices and Concertos. This was not an insult. He could play with demonic speed and still maintain a great sound. He is first and foremost a violinist, a superb one. Paganini's music is also brilliant and elegant sounding. In his time, audiences were moved to tears by his slower violin movements. This proves the emotional factor is present in his music, making him a Romantic composer and nevertheless a Classical composer. Stradivari violins were being made at this time. It was a great period in music and Paganini was a legend. I highly recommend this cd containing his most gorgeous works.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory set of Paganini.......2000-01-14

This is a fine compilation. Not only it includes better compositions by Paganini, it also includes some of the best recorded performance of the works as well. As a musicological interest, Grumiaux and Szerying gave revival performances of no.3 and 4. The approaches the three violinists take are interesting to note as well. Szeryng and Grumiaux's playing emphasize the lyrical, aristocratic quality, whereas Gitlis emphasizes the demonic quality. And both approaches work splendidly. This set will provide an excellent introduction for people who does not know the compositions by Paganini, and will provide great pleasure for those who knows the music but has not heard them performed by these three wonderful violinists. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fine compilation of Paganini.......1999-12-01

This is a fine collection of Paganini. Szeryng and Grumiaux gave the modern premieres for third and fourth concertos, respectively. Grumiaux's aristocratic performance of the fourth concerto has rarely been matched. In his performance, musicianship, technique and taste are balanced in an incomparable perfection. Szeryng's noble, distinguished performance of the third concerto has also very few equals. His restrained lyricism is particularly effective in the aria-like 2nd movement. As a pleasant surprise, Szeryng's performance has a great deal of charm as well (which is not always the case). Then as a contrast, this set has a hair-raisingly demonic performance of the second concerto by under-rated Ivry Gitlis. Gitlis's approach is 180 degree opposite from lyrical Grumiaux and Szeryng. Gitlis plays the concerto as if he is an personification of the devil himself, with gut-shattering vibrato and fearless abandan. Gitlis' fine performances of 3 caprices matches in every way with Heifetz's. The other recordings in this set are also distinguished, but not quite in the same level as the above mentioned. Grumiaux's lyrical performance of the first concerto sounds somewhat pale compared to young Yehudi Menuhin's 1934 performance, and so as his recording of two variations (Ricci plays a better Le Streghe, and I don't understand why Philips did not use Gitlis' version of I palpiti, which is much better). Marrinar's competent but hardly exciting perpetuo mobile (compare with Toscanini's recording!) could have been substituted with several more of Gitlis' Paganini short pieces he recorded during the 1960's on Philips. But this compilation is definitely worth getting for the concertos nos.2, 3 & 4. And the price is good too!

This exemplary collection is full of music as ravishing as In the Wee Small Hours or Kind of Blue. Mixing radio staples (the Flamingos' definitive version of "I Only Have Eyes for You") with less-heard classics (the Cadillacs' "Gloria," the Velvetones' "Glory of Love"), Doo Wop Ballads brings the sound of the street corner home to the quiet corners of romance. Essential to the development of later decades' soul music, the sounds herein are also a reminder that these '50s teenagers and young adults indeed laid a claim on our hearts as unyielding as those of Frank or Miles. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible.......2007-05-14

You're not going to want to hear this everyday, but this is prime catalogue stuff you'll want to have around for listens whenever you are in the mood for some doowop balladry. Separate it from its overplayed familiarity on radio, and you have distinct artistry that won't ever be duplicated. There is some genius here.

5 out of 5 stars best of the oldies.......2005-10-08

I throughly enjoyed this CD. I am so glad I decided to purchase it. But how could I turn it down with some of my favorites on it ,like Jimmy Beaumont and The Skyliners, The Moonglows, The Flamingos and The Spaniels? I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to doo wop (along with the Uptempo collection).......2005-08-28

Doo Wop is now an extinct subgenre of rock 'n' roll, but its influence still lives on. Since Doo Wop was, lke all 50s rock 'n' roll, a singles genre, its hard to find a good album to help you get into the genre. Rhino's two volumes from 1989 are the perfect answer (unless you have enough money to pick up the Doo Wop box). Every song here is a certified classic, and this is a great way to have those great oldies in your collection. There are a few songs that stand out to most listeners. "In the Still of the Night" contains harmonies that could put any one of these modern R&B artists to shame. "My True Story" is almost uptempo with its "cry, cry, cry" chorus. "Earth Angel" is possibly the most popular oldie song ever made. Its not my favorite, but it certainly was groundbreaking in the Doo Wop genre. "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" is the perfect way to close out the album. This is beautiful music that should be in every collection.

5 out of 5 stars I remember..........2004-01-25

This is a great CD. It features all the best known doo wop ballads, plus a few that aren't so well known. There are tons of great vocals here. If you are a fan of vocal harmony, you should definitely get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars GOING, GOING, GONE.......2003-07-09

This is the first doo wop CD I've heard that includes the songs I remember listing to when they weren't oldies. It is nice to hear them with out radio personality Jerry Blavat interupting. Buy it, this CD is a home run.

This is a great CD...To hear such a legend....Her live performances are still great also....Thanks for making this CD available for the ones who still appreciate the older music....

5 out of 5 stars All you need is Love.......2006-08-12

OK, so which one of you other reviewers has MY copy of this CD, that I loaned out to a friend 10 (?) years ago? Well, I can get (am getting) another. My collection is mostly jazz, but I grew up on r&b and have a few standouts: The Impressions, Ike & Tina Turner, etc., and Ms Love is right up there.

4 out of 5 stars tap218.......2002-12-24

i first heard darlene love in 1962 when she sang he's a rebel although the crystals received credit for the song i didn't realize that phil spector had darlene sing the song eventhough she wasn't a member of the group. i guess phil could do pretty much what he wanted back then! this alblum demonstrates not only the wonderful voice darlene possessed but the creativity of phil spector. his musical arrangements a perfect blend of guitars, saxaphones, percussion, backupsingers and the best studio drummer there was in hal blaine.i truly enjoy most of the songs on this alblum, but my favorite is zip a dee doo dah. this song is just a great off beat rendition of an old classic.once again the band and darlene simply compliment eachother.i just wish it was about 5 minutes longer! i rated this alblum 4 stars because there are some songs i just can't quite get into. i'm sure there are other people who would enjoy them and i do appreciate the effort put into them, but i'll listen to 11 out of 15 songs anytime!

5 out of 5 stars DARLENE LOVE WAS QUEEN OF "THE WALL OF SOUND".......2002-10-22

DARLENE LOVE HAS A VOICE THAT REALLY STANDS OUT. WHETHER YOU HEAR HER AS BACK-UP TO ELVIS PRESLEY, DICK DALE AND THE DELTONES(LISTEN TO THE MAN WITH THE BOSS GUITAR)YOU CAN TELL IT'S HER. SHE SANG IN SO MANY GROUPS BUT HER VOICE STOOD OUT!SHE DID HOWEVER MANAGE, THROUGH PHIL SPECTOR, TO RELASE SOME SINGLES UNDER HER OWN NAME.HER BIGGEST AND FIRST SOLO HIT WAS "TODAY I MET THE BOY I'M GONNA MARRY".WHAT A SOUND THAT WAS!! I WENT OUT AND BOUGHT SEVERAL COPIES BECAUSE I KNEW I'D WEAR THEM OUT. HER VOICE HOWEVER STANDS OUT BIG- TIME IN "HE'S A REBEL" SINGING LEAD WITH THE CRYSTALS. EVERYBOY LOVED TO DANCE TO THAT ONE IN THE 60'S! DARLENE HAD ORIGINALLY STARTED OUT SINGING GOSPEL AND THE STRENGTH IS HEARD IN ALL HER SONGS. I'VE BOUGHT EVERYTHING SHE EVER PUT OUT. THERE ARE STILL CUTS OUT THERE THAT HAVEN'T BEEN RELEASED WITH THE BLOSSOMS . ALL IN ALL THIS C.D. IS EXCELLENT AND NOT TO BE MISSED!!!DARLEN LOVE WAS QUEEN OF PHIL SPECTOR'S "WALL OF SOUND".

4 out of 5 stars A Nostalgic Tribute To A Underappreciated Singer........2002-09-13

Darlene Love is an underrated 60's girl-group performer that did not get enough attention. Darlene shows off some of her greatest songs on this CD. In my own opinion, this displays Darlene at her 1960's point where she was a rising star. I would've like to have seen more of her Broadway work on the CD...but her theatre career was short-lived. I love Darlene, she's a wonderful woman.
