A 1975 live album that found Clapton at--if you'll pardon the expression--a crossroads, E.C. Was Here marks the line of demarcation between the guitar hero of the past and more song-oriented player he'd become for the second half of the '70s. Clapton breaks out on a couple of old Blind Faith numbers--"Presence of the Lord" and "Can't Find My Way Home"--that reflect his soulful, spiritual side, while "Further On Up the Road" rocks out and Charles Brown's "Drifting Blues," restored to its full eleven-and-a-half-minute length on the CD's newly remastered version, presents another instrumental showcase. There are only six tunes here, but E.C. leaves his indelible mark on each of them. --Daniel Durchholz --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

--Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
"Tell Them E.C. Was Here" and he left you the CD!.......2007-06-20
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
For as long as there have been record companies they have taken constant criticism (Well deserved) for being short sided, out of touch with the artists audience, and only caring about the might dollar. When August 1975 saw the release of "E.C. Was Here" the accolades belong not only to Mr. Clapton but the suits for understanding in advance this wasn't going to be about hit singles and three minute songs.
"E.C. Was Here" contains six tracks. Only one was penned by Clapton the Blind Faith masterpiece ("Presence Of The Lord"). He would deliver another Blind Faith treasure "Can't Find My Way Home" (Steve Winwood).
The opening track "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" is written by Billy Myles. Clapton's not the only one singing the blues. His guitar sounds as sincere as E.C. with a terrific rendition.
Next comes "Presence Of The Lord." During the 6:40 things get very still. You became fixated on the pure emotion from Clapton. He was attempting to put the drug demons behind and with Yvonne Elliman's incredible voice along side, this is as good as any post Blind Faith version. Your ear can hear after "Everybody knows the score" E.C. mutters "yeah." Don't think the vocal arrangement dampers the guitar. Clapton's six string sounds like a blowtorch.
Track three is the longest one on the disc. It is the Brown, Moore, and Williams composition "Driftin' Blues. Clapton's wizardry leads the band through an exhausting and uplifting 11:43.
Up next is Eric's tremendous rendition of "Can't Find My Way Home." Once again, Yvonne Elliman's powerhouse and vocal diversification enhances an instant classic.
One of Clapton's idols Robert Johnson's "Rambling On My Mind" follows the Blind Faith genius. It is one thing to pay homage to your heroes but harder to excel in the process. Clapton plays the blues as if there would be no tomorrow. The guitar's tone perfect for the stroll back in time.
Joe Medwick and Don Robey's tune "Further On Up The Road" has been played a million times. When Clapton puts this in the set list (He has many times over the years) it brings a certain distinction. Jamie Oldaker's drums sound wonderful in conjunction with the guitar.
Throughout the festivities the CD mix of the other players Carl Radle (Bass), George Terry (Guitar), Marcy Levy (Vocals), and Dick Sims (Keyboards) is well done.
Tell them "E.C. was here."
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

his best effort.......2006-04-21
it seemed the more raggedy and doped out clapton was the more inspirational his playing was. i saw this tour from 1974 and some of his playing was from another world, some of his licks and runs on this album are just sick, play it and see why for a period of 5 years from 1969 to 1974 he was the best in the world

The backup band is so lousy. On 'Rambling' you can hear EC speaking out the chord (C sharp, E, funny). But wait, the guitar is simply the best blues rock I've ever heard.
In HYELAW, each singing line is completed by a poignant guitar phrase that complete and dig deepeer in the emotion.
The Presence of the Lord chorus shows what heavy guitar can be when it goes beyond the cliches. It's at par with the best Led Zeppelin.
All acoustic work is better than anything in Unplugged.
Rambling is a meditation, the same kind he would do years after in Old Love. Close your eyes and take the trip with him.
Further On Up The Road is a classy boogie, showing EC amazing sens of timing and crescendo.
I truely respect all EC work. But I wish he build on this kind of inspiration rather than go puppy like he did next in his career.
Here, There and Everywhere.......2005-11-19
EC's done a bit of touring over the years, you know? Paid his dues. Back when these tunes were recorded, many of his fans were uncertain how much longer Eric would be around, worried as they were about rumors of drug and alcohol abuse typical of rock star excess. But ol' EC wasn't finished just yet and as the intervening years have shown, he's still alive and kicking.
It might be easy for some to look at the song list and discount this set of live performances - where are the hits? Well, you won't find "Layla" or "Crossroads" but all six of these songs are excellent and perhaps more importantly, they fit into a coherent whole. "Have you Ever Loved A Woman" has never been on my EC favorites list but each time I listen to it, I get pulled down into the fabric and catch the groove. Likewise, the two Blind Faith tunes included here ("Presence of the Lord" and "Can't Find My Way Home") might seem a little out of place since they take up so much of this disc, but in fact, they prove to be excellent choices.
But if you only need one excuse to pick this disc up, it can be found in "Drifting Blues" which weaves a seven minute path through a moody blues before melding into a rambling finish. Robert Johnson's "Rambling On My Mind" is included here and is given a kind of patient approach that can give incredible power to the blues. This is an excellent performance and after signaling the band to F sharp, EC unleashes a signature solo. The disc closes out with a rowdy rendition of "Further On Up the Road" that is fit for a king. Not bad for a disc that was more often than not panned by professional reviewers when it was released in '75.
E C Was Here.......2005-07-16
I was never a big fan of Claptons through the years.I liked Cream and Dominos and Blind Faith but never really Claptons solo stuff.I heard all the songs that were played on the radio and that was about it.Well I listened to this album and I became a fan.I read a review before that said this was boring well that is wrong. This album I think I can honestly say this is why Eric Clapton is a guitar god.Great blues and great songs and great guitar. That makes it all worth listening.

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite recordings.......2005-10-01
This recording is sublime!!! This is a compilation of Anne Sofie von Otter's favorite pieces. She chose such diverse and lovely music. Her diction is incredible. Her expressive voice moved me to tears in "A dio Roma," by Monteverdi. Her Handelian arias were also wonderful. My favorites from this CD are: all of the German lieder pieces, "A dio Roma" (Monteverdi), "Un sapin isole' se dresse" (Lahore), "I'm a Stranger Here Myself" (Weill), "In quali eccessi...Mi tradi" (Mozart), and "Non piu mesta" (Rossini). She is such an amazing Lyric Mezzo soprano. I love her so much. I also reccomend the Mass in C minor with Anne Sofie von Otter and Kiri te Kanawa, Cosi fan tutte with Renee Fleming (Mozart), and Ariodante (Handel). I strongly advise anyone to purchase this recording!!!
Beautiful voice, beautiful music.......2005-09-10
Superior quality recording! Gorgeous vocal production and sound. Terrific choice of material. Top of the line recording.
Anne Sofie von Otter- The Artist's Album.......2005-08-06
Some of the songs are a little too obscure for me, but I like her singing. However, I like Renee Fleming's singing better.
A fantastic CD collection of arias!!.......2005-01-06
Anne Sofie Von Otter's mezzo voice is amazing!! Her selections of Handel's Ariodante and Rossini's La Cenerentola were amazing!! This CD is amazing and if you're a huge fan of Von Otter, you should get this CD!!
Amazing versatility and unparalleled emotion.......2004-02-09
OK, so I own almost everything she's done. I am particularly fond of songs/lieder and, having listened to a great number of both male and female song singers, I can find no singer in the same universe. The intelligence of her approach, the control of her vocal color and vibrato to match the notes and lyrics, the playfulness with which she approaches the music are without equal.
This is an interesting disc and I didn't buy it until recently since I already had a lot of it and prefer songs to arias. But it was quite a revelation. The Handel and Weill are wonderful. For something completely different, try the Delage "Lahore" Track 12. Eerie and beautiful.
If Track #11, Skogen Sover, doesn't make you cry you have no heart. It may be the most beautiful use of the human voice I've ever heard. Listen carefully to the way she changes vowel sounds in the word 'juninatt' throwing in the 'n' both times so you barely hear it and it doesn't disrupt the vowel color change. At the end, turn up the volume and listen to her fade out with no vibrato until she's barely audible, then add just a touch of vibrato as she finishes with the final 't' of 'juninatt'.
There may be better aria singers, with some voices better for some types of opera. But this woman's incredible versatility is well-reflected here and a delight to listen to. Even a Rossini at the end, gynmastics and all. Has there ever been a singer with a wider repertoire matched with such gorgeous emotion? Now, if we could only get the UK version of this disc, with more and different offerings, here on Amazon USA...
A great intro to this powerful, emotional singer. Take it as a starter and buy the full discs that have the tracks you like best. You'll be captivated and not disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Clapton's 1974-75 comeback.......2005-08-10
I stumbled upon this box set after seeking out 461 Ocean Boulevard on cd. I had been listening to it on an lp and decided to get the more portable and car friendly format. That's when I had to decide if getting the 30th anniversary edition (only available version at the time) and paying nearly 30 dollars for outtakes and all the bonus material was worth it. That's when I saw this. One live and two studio albums from 1974 and 1975 during Clapton's comeback. Four years before Layla and assorted love songs, was released in 1970. The three albums flow well together and can be listened to in sequence. 461 and There's One in Every Crowd sound much like the same album. 461 went gold but There's one failed to crack the top ten. 461 has better arranged songs, and more than likely There's one was compiled of songs that were not put on 461.
461 really doesn't need many points to explain why it is so good. Basically it is Eric fusing reggae with his own style. "I Shot the Sheriff" is on this album, but not all the songs have reggae influences, but they are easy to notice. "Motherless Children" blows open the album, in my opinion this is one of the best stompers Clapton ever did. This is a very pop orieneted album, "Let it grow" is the longest song on the album clocking in at exactly 5 minutes. All around one of the best solo albums Eric did.
There's one in every crowd is a tough fight to call. Like I mentioned earlier 461 is more than likely a collection all the hits that Clapton wrote after 4 years out of the studio. But it isn't a complete throw away like some people say. The album starts with two gospel numbers, the latter "Swing low, sweet chariot" sounds like a song straight from a Bob Marley album without Marley's vocals. "Don't Blame Me" might as well be Eric playing in a Wailer's cover band complete with the background singers and an organ. But it is still a good album.
E.C. was here. This album proves that even though two of his studio albums in '74 and '75 had reggae leanings Clapton could still play the blues. "Have you ever loved a woman" opens this album spotlighting classic Clapton from days gone by. But the part of this album that stands out are the two Blind Faith songs "Presence of the Lord" and "Can't Find My Way Home." Most songs are played very tightly by the band with Clapton still able to stretch out in parts.
Over all it's a nice collection, when I wrote this review the set figured to be about 8 dollars a cd. However, some liner notes and new photos would have been nice. Instead you just get the album cover booklet placed in a long box. But hey thats three jewel cases I won't ever have to replace. This makes the set a solid 3 1/2 stars, but a shakey 4.
Also I noticed the sequence is different from my lp of 461. Mine has "Better Make Is Through Today" as track 2. While the cd replaces it with a song called "Give Me Strength" and Better Make it is track 7 on There's always one. I'm not sure what the story behind this is.

--Daniel Durchholz

Tell them "E.C. was here."
Enjoy the music and be well,

his best effort.......2006-04-21
it seemed the more raggedy and doped out clapton was the more inspirational his playing was. i saw this tour from 1974 and some of his playing was from another world, some of his licks and runs on this album are just sick, play it and see why for a period of 5 years from 1969 to 1974 he was the best in the world
EC was Blues Rock god .......2006-04-10
