Album Description
Electric Landlady was a much more eclectic affair than Kite with numerous trips to NY to work with a whole crazy set of Latin players who fuelled kirsty's love of that music for future recordings. The two songs which stand out as different are the Johnny Marr penned walking Down Madison' and 'Children of the Revolution' which were tracks Johnny sent to us and we added the appropriate overdubs. EMI. 2005.

Customer Reviews:
A declaration of independence that still rings true.......2007-01-09
It's hard to believe this album is almost 20 years old, because it sounds as fresh today as it did in 1989. Essential listening for every woman who ever felt the need to apologize for being herself.
Eclectic "Landlady".......2005-12-19
The Album:
After her major comeback with 1989's Kite, English singer-songwriter Kirsty MacColl was on a roll, and she quickly followed this up with 1991's Electric Landlady. However, despite the droll title (a goof on the Jimi Hendrix classic Electric Ladyland), MacColl's lyrics on this album are generally more earnest and less biting than those on her previous LP. This is especially true in her social commentary, as she makes an anti-war statement on "Children of the Revolution," calls for appreciation of family on "The Hardest Word," touches upon various environmental ills on "Maybe It's Imaginary," and addresses homelessness and urban squalor on "Walking Down Madison" (a massive UK hit, and a surprise minor hit in the US). Still, her catchy melodies, pleasant voice, and often deadpan delivery keep her more socially conscious songs from becoming too heavy-handed.
EL also offers a more diverse sound than the Brit-pop-heavy Kite, ranging from the countryish "Maybe It's Imaginary," to the hip-hop-flavored "Walking Down Madison," to the sassy Latin-tinged single "My Affair" (a sort of precursor to her final album, 2000's Tropical Brainstorm), to Celtic folk ballads ("The Hardest Word" and the self-deprecating "The One and Only"). There are a lot of power-popish tunes here, as well (my favorite being the jangly single "All I Ever Wanted," which Kirsty wrote with American power-pop maestro Marshall Crenshaw); but even so, most of these are accompanied by strings ("Children of the Revolution" and the witty "He Never Mentioned Love"), horns ("My Way Home"), or both ("Halloween"). While MacColl's then-husband/producer Steve Lillywhite would later suggest that "some songs in retrospect would have benefited from more straightforward pop beats," I must admit I respectfully disagree -- I think EL's varied instrumental colors have made it a far more interesting record than it might've been if Kirsty and company had merely repeated the formula of her previous album.
The Extras:
Electric Landlady was the second of two albums MacColl released on the Virgin label; earlier this year, EMI/Virgin reissued both this album and Kite, expanding them with bonus tracks. Unfortunately, only 5 extras (all B-sides) are offered here, including a cover of the cutesy ditty "Darling Let's Have Another Baby" (recorded as a fun, hard-rocking duet by Kirsty and British protest singer Billy Bragg), a cover of the painfully earnest eco-anthem "Don't Go Near the Water" (a lesser-known Beach Boys song), and one remix each of "Walking Down Madison" and "My Affair."

If you like Southern jangly power pop..........2001-12-24
then you'll love this. By far one of the best albums by a band no one has heard of. You must own this. Insightful lyrics and inspired guitar make this a great CD to listen to when you are feeling introspective or just hanging out with friends. Similar to the Drivin' N Cryin' sound. But a bit rougher arond the edges.

Smashing!.......2001-10-19
"He Never Mentioned Love" is one of her wittiest and brightest, "Halloween" is one of her most wistful, and "Walking Down Madison" is one of her gutsiest and toughest. All said, "Electric Landlady" packs an emotional punch that keeps me coming back for more. It's got better material than "Kite" and it's not as scattershot as "Galore"(hits package)and I just love her deep, solemn voice and that hushed, prophetic way she has of expressing unrequited love. God bless Kirsty...

Customer Reviews:
Eclectic Kirsty..........2007-06-09
Truly an overlooked talent, Kirsty MacColl was a wonderful singer-songwriter with albums that span the 80's and 90's...not to mention a wide range of influences. Daughter of famous Scots folkie Ewan MacColl and wife of famed producer Steve Lillywhite, Kirsty seems to have been surrounded by music her whole life, and she put her wide musical knowledge to good use on "Electric Landlady" (a play on the title of a Jimi Hendrix album, "Electric Ladyland").
In a mix of wry, sometimes cynical lyrics and tuneful melodies (sung in her fantastic, expressive alto voice), MacColl shows that she far surpasses most of her contemporaries in energy, elegance and wit. There are wonderful commentaries on love ("All I Ever Wanted" and "He Never Mentioned Love"), ecology, ("Maybe It's Imaginary") and politics ("Children Of the Revolution", no relation to the T. Rex song). Her arrangements are very involved, with a wide array of instrumentation. She even attempts (and excels at) a hip-hop influenced song, "Walking Down Madison."
MacColl always used latin rhythms, and they are really in the forefront on songs like the bossa-nova-esque "We'll Never Pass This Way Again", and the zany samba, "My Affair" where Kirsty even tries her hand at singing in some wonderfully unaccented español. Of course, all this experimentation with styles sometimes leads her down paths better not taken (the faux "rock" of "Lying Down" f'rinstance).
Sadly, Kirsty passed away in 2000...and what many consider to be her best album (myself included) "Desperate Characters," still isn't available on CD (although several songs from it may be found on the compilations "Galore" and "From Croydon To Cuba"). Of the four albums and few compilations available to us as I write this, "Electric Landlady" is a shining example of a wonderful writer, singer, arranger and all-around talent that needs remembering...
My 1st ever CD!.......2004-12-23
I remember this one quite well, because over twelve years ago, it (along with The Pursuit of Happiness' 2nd LP) was the first CD I ever bought. Will at Walrus Music told me it was much more experimental than her first album "Kite", but I loved her voice and bought it anyway.
I was pleasantly surprised. Though it's loaded with a lot of 'hired guns' (The Pogues, Johnny Marr), the mix of styles doesn't sound jarring in the slightest (although the opener, "Walking Down Madison" is a bit dated at this point). Track 3, "Children Of The Revolution" is one of the best non-Smiths collaborations Johnny Marr's ever put his talents to, and track 6, "Lying Down" is a subtle little groove that's infectious as all get out.
As her ex-husband Steve Lillywhite was behind the production, this album has way too much going for it to be any less than four stars, but I generally save five star affairs for 'perfect' records. This one's closer than most.
AWESOME.......2002-03-25
she will be sorely missed. I loved her thoughtful lyrics and playful songs!! Get it!
Excellent.......2001-09-10
This is the second record I bought by her because I fell in love with Tropical Brainstorm, her latest and sadly last record to be released. Electric Landlady is dripping with lovely melodies and catchy Latin beats. A definite must have!
Eclectic (in a good way).......2001-02-17
This one takes me back to my freshman year at the Univ. of Arizona, Fall 1991. I know, I'm old. It was an exciting time, musically of course, but just in general. New beginnings and all. This disc was in constant rotation for about four months. I break it out every October for a few spins -- just feels like an October album. Sentimental favorite for sure. Kirsty, we miss you...
