Editorial Reviews

Though at first glance a third Queen hits collection might seem to stretch the bounds of credibility, upon reflection this collection may well be the most revealing and compelling of the lot. Gathered from disparate late-career band and solo projects as well as Freddie Mercury tributes with guest vocalists filling the shoes of the band's late singer (Elton John dramatically on "The Show Must Go On," George Michael playfully over-the-top on "Somebody to Love"), it's a collection that coalesces into a thematically and musically satisfying whole. Though oft criticized for their unapologetic excesses, Queen's brash infusion of rock and blues with operatic drama and scale (deliciously exemplified here by "Barcelona," Mercury's duet with diva Montserrat Caballe) was unique. III isn't so much a collection of hits as a well-paced, lovingly compiled homage to Freddie Mercury and his distinctly arch artistic vision. --Jerry McCulley --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Billy Joel - Greatest Hits Vol. 3 .......2007-03-27

Doesn't have all his works, but is a nice blend of some of his earlier work, up to his last album of new work released in the 90's. Some of the work from the mid to late 90's isn't Bill Joel material in my mind. It's o.k, I can still hear his roots in there, but it's not the Billy Joel I grew up listening to and loved.

2 out of 5 stars Only 6 new songs added to his greatest hits!.......2007-01-11

Don't get me wrong. Billy Joel is Great. But this vol. 3 cd should have new songs added to the collection. Out of 17 songs there are only 6 that are new to the greatest hits collection. If you already have Vol 1 and 2 thinking that Vol 3 is the next series. You are mistaken! Vol 3 is over 75% of vol. 2.
It is a good cd. But I already had all but 6 songs. Maybe they should have found some more of his great music. Or called it a mini addition to his Vol 1 and 2.

5 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything.......2006-12-27

The great thing about Billy Joel is you don't have to wonder about the lyrics of his songs, his diction is crystal clear and every word can be understood. One gets the feeling he is telling his life story in song, sometimes romantic, sometimes down and blue and at times really exuberant. Lullabye is so tender,Leningrad a meaningful tale and To Make You Feel My Love worth the price of the CD all by itself. These songs touch all the emotions and you'll find yourself joining in on some of the lyrics. A stunning array, five absolute stars!

5 out of 5 stars Billy just continued to make great music...........2006-08-19

I love this CD, it shows that Billy Joel still had it, even in later years. The time represented here (mid 80's-mid 90's) is just great, with only the best songs here. This is a wonderful companion for his vol.1 and vol.2 compilation. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Joel the genuis!!.......2006-06-19

there is no question in my mind that Billy Joel is a musical Genius up there with Elton John and Paul McCartney!! almost all the songs in this vol.3 cd are hits!! go buy it,and while your at it get vol.1 and 2!!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Overview of Bob Dylan's Career.......2007-03-05

Unlike other Bob Dylan compliations, (The single disc The Best Of Bob Dylan and the double disc The Essential Bob Dylan)This is a thorough collection of Dylan's best songs. Blowin In The Wind, The Times They Are A-Changin', Subterranean Homesick Blues, Maggie's Farm, Mr. Tambourine Man, Like A Rolling Stone, Positively Fourth Street, I Want You, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, All Along The Watchtower, Lay Lady Lay, The Mighty Quinn, Knockin On Heaven's Door, Tangled Up In Blue, and Hurricane are all here. If you are into Dylan and want all of his good songs, get this.

5 out of 5 stars So Many Songs to Choose From, How Did They Ever Decide?.......2006-04-03

I really like Bob Dylan's first Greatest Hits record. I love "Tambourine Man", love the subtle electric guitar. I adore "It Ain't Me Babe," it ain't no stinkin' love song. And neither is "Positively 4th Street." These are bitter and biting songs that grip like glue. "If you were standing in my shoes, you'd know what a drag it is to see you." What a line. Nobody writes them like Bob Dylan. "Rolling Stone", "Rainy Day Woman," and "I Want You," three jumpin' rockers. And then there is "Just Like a Woman," Lord I love that song that shows what a mesmerizing voice Dylan can have when he wants to. And, of course, I can't forget that song that is almost impossible to sing along with, " Subterranean Homesick Blues." Try memorizing the lyrics to that one, try singing them without the record playing. Was Dylan ahead of his time? You betcha.

There is a song on Dylan's second Greatest Hits record "Tomorrow is a Long Time," which is just about one of the best songs I've every heard. It's from a concert that, if all of the performances were delivered this well, then I don't know why they didn't release the whole show. Also I agree that it would have been nice to have a whole record of Bob Dylan and Happy Traum together. It also would have been nice to have a whole record produced by Leon Russell, because as we see with the two songs he produced on this record, "Watching" the River Flow" and "When I Paint My Masterpiece" Mr. Russell knew how to get a good rocker out of Mr. Dylan. Still, even though we don't have the records it would have been nice to have, we have snippets here of what they could have been. Several different styles, all good, but then Bob Dylan is always reinventing himself, but to reinvent himself a couple times on the same record, amazing, simply amazing.

Dylan's third Greatest Hits record is a masterpiece in it's own right. In fact because of the many different styles Dylan uses, it kind of reminds my of a Beatles' record. You know, how the Beatles would switch the lead singer from song to song between John, Paul, George and Ringo. I think because of that Beatles' records never get old. This record is like that. Dylan's voice is so different from song to song, the bands are different. It seems like a record full of surprises, one I know I'll never get tired of and I don't think you'll ever tire of it either.

5 out of 5 stars There is Just Simply No Song Man Better than Bob Dylan.......2006-04-03

"Blowin' in the Wind" one of the three acoustic songs from his too short protest period on this record conjures up images of a young man, wind blowing his hair every which way as he sings this song protesting all wars. The rock numbers are outstanding and the inclusion of "Postively 4th Street" was inspirational, because not only is it a divine song, but it had never been on an LP up until the release of this record. In fact this whole record is kind of inspirational, good early material that will have anybody up and thinking, good electric songs that will make you think as you sing along. Just an all around good record, this is.

Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits II" opens with the up tempo rocker "Watching the River Flow," then slows down some with the acoustic "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," then jumps into a great Dylan countryesqe love song, "Lay, Lady Lay," then onto "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" from the "John Wesley Album." It is a testament to how strongly Bob Dylan presents his songs that he can take you from fast to slow, electric to acoustic and grab you instantly into each song. Dylan is a master, no doubt about it. Then again, all Mr. Dylan's songs are all good aren't they? And then there's the new stuff on here that wasn't really a greatest hit, though now that the record has been out for umpteen years, probably nobody knows that, but anyway, that stuff is a good too, no it's great.

"In a crowded room full of covered up mirrors, looking into the lost forgotten years for dignity." What a line, delivered the way only Dylan can deliver them. The years just roll on and he just keeps getting better. Like a shape changer he keeps changing, redefining himself, putting out new stuff, rereleasing his old stuff, putting out his live stuff and I am always amazed. When I first got "Greatest Hits III) (I bought it on cassette), I stuck it into the play in my car, because I couldn't wait to get home. "Tangled Up in Blue" came on and I immediately forgot that I was listening to a Greatest Hits record, was taking right back to the first time I'd heard "Blood on the Tracks" and I stayed right there till "Changing of the Guard" came on, not the song I was expecting, but I was immediately hooked right in. Then right onto "The Groom's Still Waiting at the Alter", a down right rocker with a heck of a Gospel flavor. Next comes "Hurricane" a song with a different band, different flavor and that is the genius of Bob Dylan. He can pull you in any direction he wants you to go and you follow.

5 out of 5 stars This is Just Simply an Excellent Collection.......2006-04-03

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" came out after a long lapse, probably because of Dylan's motorcycle accident. At least that's what I've read. Unlike a lot of hits records, this is a great stand alone record in it's own right and it flows as if all of the songs were meant for this record and this record alone. The three acoustic songs are absolutely three of his best. The record starts out as a rocker with "Rainy Day Woman," where we hear a humorous, seemingly carefree Dylan, but unlike on "Highway 61" here the song segues into just about the greatest protest song every written, "Blowing in the Wind." Two more acoustic songs, good ones, and then were rocking through the rest of the CD, slowing down only for "Mr. Tambourine Man." I love this record and often have the CD playing in my car.

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2" is a very interesting collection. The songs, though are all very good, just don't seem to flow as well (at least for me) as they do on "Greatest Hits, Volume 1." Sticking the acoustic, "Don't Think Twice" between the Rocking "Watching the River Flow" and "Lay, Lady Lay" just someone seems not right. I would have grouped the three early acoustic songs together along with the very excellent "Tomorrow is a Long Time" a live song that until this record came out, had been unreleased. It is such a good song and maybe should have been grouped with its brothers. All that being said, this is a very good collection with some outstanding songs you're just gonna love and even with my problem with the grouping, I still have to give this record five stars.

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Vol. 3" starts out with the hard driving "Tangled Up in Blue," moves into "Changing of the Guards", the best song, in my opinion, from the underrated "Street Legal" album. "The Groom is Still Waiting at the Alter" was originally released as a single and later turned up in the "Biograph Box", and then the disc dives into "Hurricane" from "Desire." Like the first "Greatest Hits" LP, this CD stands on its own. All of the songs seem to work well together. There are no pre-electric songs, but this stuff is a long time away from that earlier period so, I guess, I shouldn't have been surprised when the CD came out, but I would have liked to see "Girl from the North Country" or maybe "To Ramona." I think, despite the fact that they were recorded earlier, that they would have fit right in with this five star collection. Still, it is a Greatest hits record and those songs were not hits. But then Dylan is famous for sticking stuff on these hits records that his audience has never heard before, like "Dignity" and "Series of Dreams" on this record.

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2006-11-10

This is a great collection of Bob Dylan's work. There's no way that they could put all of the songs you need from Dylan on one disc but they did there best to include everything. If you get this with the other volumes of greatest hits you are well on your way to having an awesome set.

5 out of 5 stars an awesome album.......2006-08-28

i guess bob was tired od the critics and decided to remind them how good he is and so we got greatest hits vol 3.the opener is "tangled up in blue".it goes on and on about what im not sure, but musicly its sound."changing of the guards" goes on and on but with no stick.onto the rocking "the grooms still waiting at the alter".he says a line i think is funny on this one."she could be respectfully married or running a wh%re house in buenis aries".lol.then "hurricane",a true story about a frame job on a black guy.then the very touching "forever young".its one of my top 5 fave dylan tunes.since we are on the subject of greatest hits...heres my top 5....not in order......[mr tambourine man, forever young, blowin in the wind, standing in the doorway and all i really want to do].anyhow, the epic "jokerman" spins next.its wonferful.theres a couple so so songs called "dignity" and "sergio".dignity at least was trancendendant but segio just wasnt all that."ring them bells" is a listenable church song full of inspiration."gotta serve somebody" was rather redundant."series of dreams" was just weird."brownsville girl" is another one of those good but long songs rgar doesnt really seem to be going anywhere."under the red sky"was ok i guess.lastly there was "knocking on heavens door".this song was great but tragicly short and not even axl roses singing the chorus over and over a billion times changes that.a great album.if you count every live, best of and studio album, itd only be topped by greatest hits 1 and 2,bringing it all back home and blonde on blonde.

4 out of 5 stars ANOTHER LOOK FROM BOB .......2006-06-27

THIS IS MAINLY A COMPILATION OF WORK FROM VARIOUS PERIODS THAT DID NOT MEET SUCCESS WITH DYLAN'S TRADITIONAL FOLK AND FOLK ROCK AUDIENCES AND WAS REISSUED AFTER HIS REEMERGENCE AS AN ICON IN THE EARLY 1990'S. I PLAN TO DO A LONGER REVIEW OF DYLAN'S EARLY WORKS WHICH I AM BOTH MORE FAMILIAR WITH AND WHICH HAD MORE OF AN EFFECT ON MY GENERATION OF '68. THAT SAID, THERE ARE SOME GOOD SONGS HERE SUCH AS GOTTA SERVE SOMEONE AND BROWNSVILLE GIRL. FOREVER YOUNG HAS TAKEN ITS PLACE AS THE CLASSIC OF BABY-BOOMERS (INCLUDING THIS WRITER)TRYING TO STAVE OFF OLD (OR IS IT MIDDLE) AGE. DIGNITY STANDS OUT AS A SENSITIVE WORK CALLING TO OUR ATTENTION HOW VERY LITTLE DIGNITY THIS SOCIETY AFFORDS MOST PEOPLE. ENOUGH SAID.

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous!.......2005-11-26

I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.

5 out of 5 stars The best violinist ever!.......2001-01-26

All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

5 out of 5 stars This CD brings a smile to my face driving to work.......2007-05-30

TV themes these days aren't written with the same charm or character that they use to be, so I love this CD. Actually I have all 7 of the TV's Greatest Hit's CD's, and have them all loaded up in my car's CD changer. They sure put a smile on my face as I wade thru the frustrating traffic to and from work. If you're somewhere between 45 and 60yrs old, you should love the entire collection. (I'm 53)

4 out of 5 stars I love listening to TV........2005-12-05

First of all, these are ALL obviously the originals, I don't know how anyone could think they weren't. Secondly, if you're a TV addict, a child of the 80's, or just a pop-culture junkie, this is a must. It's 73 minutes of 65 TV theme songs, all for your nostalgic pleasure. Classics like "Three's Company", "Taxi", "Miami Vice", "Fat Albert", "Happy Days", "The Love Boat", and numerous others. There are a few shows sadly missing, but chances are they're on the other discs in the "TV" series, most of which are also this good. This also makes for a good game of "name that tune" with family or friends, or put in on during a party and listen to the conversation pick up. Overall, listening to TV is the best thing since watching it. Good luck finding it though.

5 out of 5 stars Original Versions.......2004-08-23

Sixty five original versions of television theme songs. It is so good to find original versions of these songs as most of these type of albums you buy contain versions sung by some unknown non original artist or played by an orchestra without the lyrics and this fact is never mentioned on the outside of the CD cover with the purchaser only finding out they have been ripped off when they get home. Rest assured this sensational album contains nothing but original versions as you heard when you watched the show on TV.

Of course some shows updated their theme songs over the years so some songs on here may be slightly different to what you remember if you tuned in a couple of seasons in.
The Muppet Show and The Smurfs are two which later versions of exist but it is good to hear and own the initial series versions anyway. There is an official Muppet Show soundtrack with the later version on it if you really want it. I am yet to come across the later Smurf one however.

With 65 TV shows covered you really can't go wrong with this collection. Sure there are some great 70's & 80's songs from shows not included, but other shows would have had to be left off for them to be put on here and everyone has different taste. I don't know how old this CD is, I found it in a second hand music store but hopefully if there isn't already a sequel the makers will bring one out with shows like Astro Boy, Married With Children, Chips, Dukes of Hazard, Secret Valley, Round the Twist, Fraggle Rock and other classics. Also a 90's version with shows like Seinfeld, Friends, Malcolm in the Middle, Law and Order, X-Files and so on would be great.

I love listening to theme songs, I don't really know why, but the fact remains that this would be the greatest collection of theme songs on the one CD that I have ever come across. Usually you have to buy whole soundtrack albums to get just one song and the other songs on the album are nothing but fillers. This CD is a must have for any collector of theme songs, just buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Going Back In Time In A Great Way.......2004-01-10

A friend had this CD while we went on a long driving trip. Listening to this over the many miles was a great brain teaser, and stumped us for many of them. We could see the opening credits and scenes we remembered, but had so much fun trying to remembering these. We laughed like crazy when we figured them out, laughing with a long trip down memory lane. We will certainly buy the other versions for other trips. Great to share with people who can also relate to these shows.

One of the most popular touring acts of the '70s and '80s, the Beach Boys nonetheless found sales of their new music disappointing for much of those decades. Their Brother Records imprint was stamped on some of the best albums of their "mature" period--Sunflower, Surf's Up, and the one-of-a-kind The Beach Boys Love You--but earlier classics such as "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Good Vibrations" remained their most popular work. This third volume of greatest hits collects 20 Brother cuts, including the occasional chart success ("Rock & Roll Music," the twice-released "Sail On, Sailor," "It's OK," "Getcha Back"). A few lesser-known winners ("This Whole World," "Long Promised Road," "Honkin' Down the Highway") provide welcome highlights. Still, the inclusion of one too many remade oldies on the disc's second half underscores the Beach Boys' loss of creative energy by 1980. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars SURFING WATERS BOTH DEEP AND SHALLOW.......2006-03-06

THE BEACH BOYS are one of those bands that have provided the soundtrack to my life. Growing up in Southern California, their music really does become a part of one's experiences. For instance, I can't hear 'Help Me, Rhonda' or 'The Girls On The Beach' without recalling my years of bodysurfing the waves near Santa Monica's lifeguard station #26. 'Good Vibrations' automatically transports me back to Santa Monica High School - located conveniently 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. (Sometimes the sound of the surf called more insistently than the school bell did.) Samohi's official school song, 'Hymn Of Praise' written by Ken Darby from the Class of 1927, starts out, "Oh Samohi, dear old Samohi / Queen of the setting sun / For you we toil, for you our banners fly / We win for you when victory's won!" But every pep rally I attended from '74 through '77 ended more "excitationally" with...

Good, good, good, good vibrations
(oom bop bop)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
She's giving me excitations
(oom bop bop)

'In My Room' humorously reminds me of the time in 1986 when I found it on a jukebox in a Reno lounge and drove every other patron out of the place with it. I was in the bartender's doghouse, but what are ya gonna do with a liquidated cowboy who wants to hear 'In My Room'.....18 times? And while the richly melancholic 'The Warmth Of The Sun' is my all-time favorite Beach Boys song, there is a lot to be said for many of the tracks found on this compilation.

This is the final part of Capitol's Beach Boys Greatest Hits trilogy series. This one - which features 20 of The Boys' late period minor hits and nonhits - will be ignored by the casual Beach Boys fan, and that is an unfortunate mistake. True, these "leftovers" were recorded and released after the height of the band's popularity and creative success according to the music critics, but the Beach Boys, though they had largely moved away from their gorgeous and complex trademark vocal harmony arrangements, were still making some magic music. And some of it as sensitive and more intense than anything that preceded it.

For every lightweight and silly 'SUSIE CINCINNATI' and 'PEGGY SUE' on this collection, you'll also find a brooding 'TIL I DIE', or nostalgic 'DISNEY GIRLS (1957)', or yearning 'SURF'S UP.' No, we didn't need another version of 'ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC' or 'COME GO WITH ME' and yet, I'd hate to have missed out on the world-weary, but defiant 'LONG PROMISED ROAD', or the intricate protest song, 'THE TRADER', with its catchy movements that force my toes to tap or my feet to stomp.

Some of these songs, being more melodically subtle and lacking that instantly recognizable sound of The Boys' early hits, will require a bit more patience from the listener, but with time, that open-minded patience will certainly be rewarded. Of course, 'SAIL ON, SAILOR' you probably already know (I invented my pen name while it was playing through the sound system in a Coco's Restaurant); the lovely 'GOOD TIMIN'' is reminiscent of that lush harmonizing adopted from The Four Freshmen during The Beach Boys' infancy. And the well-chosen closer, 'CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'', with its urgent tenor sax solo actually eclipses the classic Mamas And Papas version. (Yeah, I couldn't believe it either!)

If all you desire is a balanced career retrospective of some of The Beach Boys' best music on a single disc, then go with 'Classics: Selected By Brian Wilson'. But the REAL fan will want the 3-part Capitol compilation series: 'The Greatest Hits, Vol 1: 20 Good Vibrations'; 'The Greatest Hits, Vol. 2: 20 More Good Vibrations'; and this disc, 'THE GREATEST HITS, VOL. 3: BEST OF THE BROTHER YEARS, 1970 - 1986.'

[*This review is dedicated to my new friend, the surf-riding, beach bike path-riding, and book-writing, MYSTICAL MARY. Evidently she was too shy to approach me on the beach bike path in 1989 to ask, "Riding my way?" She waited seventeen years and until I was living in Airheadzona, and she in Joisey, before saying anything to me. However, Mystical Mary is one of my favorite living writers, and I think you're going to be hearing about her before too long.]

5 out of 5 stars The Finest Group Ever.......2005-01-02

California Saga. When I first heard it in my early twenties I was shocked. I bought two or three copies of "Holland" and wore them out. Glad I finally got this cd with some of their very finest music. It's sad that they were on the decline by the early seventies, but what they left was amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Ed Glasner is an Idiot.......2004-08-13

The guy clearly knows not of what he speaks. This disc covers some of the most adventurous music the Beach Boys recorded. That they weren't exactly "hits" in chart placement certainly doesn't diminish their value. Indeed it is because of people like Ed Glasner who completely misunderstand the work that this music wasn't more financially successful for the group.

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Look At An Interesting Time In Their Career.......2004-07-20

By the 1970s', The Beach Boys' career had gone downhill. Once a surefire toop 10 hit machine, their singles barely made the top 30 and their albums fared even worse. So a hits collection from this time period may seem like an odd product. But it's a good way to explore this underrated period in their career since it includes several underrated gems and besides, one song here did manage to it the top five.

The first half (tracks 1 - 11) covers1970 - 1973. This is when they recorded much of their best material. Songs like "Add Some Music To Your Day", "This Whole World", Bruce Johnston's lush "Disney Girls", Brian Wilson's chilling "'Til I Die", Carl's magnum opus "The Trader" and the robust "Sail On Sailor" all could've been bigger hits than they were. "Surf's Up", the title track from their 1971 masterpiece, is the best song here. Starting off with an urgent vocal by Carl, it soon drifts into Brian's 1967 demo of the song, with its eerie piano and Brian's somber vocal.

The second half (tracks 12 - 20) covers 1976 - 86. It starts off with their huge comeback hit, a cover of Chuck Berry's "Rock And Roll Music". It was good but the Chuck Berry material should have ended with "Surfin' USA" and "Fun, Fun, Fun". The next song, "It's OK", was the single released after "Rock And Roll Music". While it wasn't as big a hit (Billboard # 29), I like it better. It's fun and orginal. "Honkin' Down The Highway" is a great Al Jardine number with a cool drum intro and a nice, spacey intro. The 1978 cover of "Peggy Sue" is surprisingly good. Unlike other covers, they stay in vein with the original recording and they succeed. Had this song been released during their heyday, it could have been a bigger hit. But you can't judge a song solely on its chart performance. 1979's top 40 hit "Good Timin'" is, in my opinion, their last masterpiece. With their harmonies evoking earlier songs like "Surfer Girl" and Carl's impassioned vocal, it truly is a marvelous studio creation. By jumping ahead to 1981, they leave out the number 12 hit "Beach Boys" medley, but that would be unnecessary since all of those songs made it onto "Greatest Hits, Volume 1". Instead, we get their cover of the Del - Vikings' 1957 hit "Come Go With Me". The song, a top 20 hit, is better than the original because of the harmonies and its beat. "Goin' On" is an odd number vaguely sounding a bit like Queen's "Somebody To Love" with its rising/fading/rising again/ading again and so on and so forth harmonies. "Getcha Back", a top 30 hit from 1985, is a great combination of old Beach Boys with modern sounds, its drum intro eminiscent of Dennis Wilson's. Finally, there's another pgood cover. "California Dreamin'" (with a haunting 12 - string guitatr provided by Byrd Roger McGuinn) is in vein of the Mamas and Papas hits.

Overall, a good collection that I recommend to all music fans. You will find yourself listening to it more than once. Also get their studio albums, inclduing "Pet Sounds" and "Friends"/"20/20", as well as both their boxed sets.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome compilation of non-typical hits from the 1980's!.......2005-11-30

The Living In Oblivion series of CD compilations does something that many similar compilations do NOT do: they give us some great variety of "hits".

There is no doubt that "Mickey" by Toni Basil was a huge hit. There's also no doubt that "Our Lips are Sealed" was a break out hit for the Go Go's, but the Funboy Three version wasn't. But what about "Living in a Box"? It only hit the Billboard top 100 at #89 in 1987. So why is it here? Why are a large number of these songs? They're not top 10 hits, right?

Wrong!

I'm sick to death of so many compilations relying on top 40 hits from the 80's. The U.S. music tastes are typically very different from those of Europe. Just because a song doesn't make the U.S. Billboard top 40 doesn't mean that it isn't a hit in other countries. And although I'm an American, my music tastes have always run more in line with those of Europe.

I'm delighted that the Living in Oblivion series (and the Pop and Wave series) have incorporated a variety of hits from the U.S. and Europe.

I also like that some of the more obscure groups and their songs are available on these compilations. There are several songs on these albums that never were released on CD (as they hadn't come into being at the time of the groups' albums initial releases), so albums such as these are the only place where you can find these hits. The Boys Don't Cry song "I Wanna Be a Cowboy" hit the Billboard charts at #12 in 1986, but the group disappeared soon thereafter. Then all of a sudden a dance version of that same song came out in the early 2000's and rocketed up the dance charts.

Don't be misled, the Living in Oblivion series is one of the absolutely best series for a variety of music from the 80's. If you want to hear run of the mill, top 40 only hits from the 80's, well, then you'll just have to look elsewhere.

Also, the liner notes and pictures of the groups included in the jewel box are really clever. You get to find out what the chart position was for the songs in the compilation and see what the groups looked like at the time of the song's release. My only issue with these liner notes is that the author of them seems to be disparaging the very music which these albums are espousing. Apparently many believe that the music from the 80's was vacuous and devoid of emotion. One need only listen to the song "The Promise" by the group "When in Rome" (Living in Oblivion Volume 5) to know that such a statement is false. While that group only had this one hit and then faded into obscurity, "The Promise" made the Billboard Top 100 at #11 and the Billboard Dance Chart at #1.

Anyway... I can't recommend this album and its entire series any more! It's simply awesome! Before believing those who would disparage this series of albums, please check the Billboard charts and you'll see that these songs were in fact hits.

GET IT!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Living in Oblivion Series.......2004-11-13

I own all five Living In Oblivion discs and this one is the one I listen to the most. Just like all compilations, there are some songs that you can find on just about any '80s retrospective CD, but there are many good songs that are not on those other discs. These songs include the fantastic "It's My Life" by Talk Talk, "Hanging on a Heart Attack" by Device, "Are You Sure" by So, "What Do All the People Know" by The Monroes, and my personal favorite, "Life in a Northern Town" by The Dream Academy.
Every fan of the 1980s will find one disc more to their liking, but chances are that most of you who love 80s music will find several songs on this disc that you will like.

4 out of 5 stars Totally 80's Man.......2004-09-13

Ok, just to make it clear, some people (ahem, some reviewers) clearly don't understand the point of the Living In Oblivion series. So far, in my listening experience, this CD has been the best one yet. With tracks of Single Hit bands and those rare songs that are just downright 80's, L.I.O. delivers a dose of the unique sounds of the eighties, and gives a splash of some of the era's greatest hits. This is what its all about.
Awesome Tracks:
Device - Hanging On a Heart Attack
Talk Talk - It's My Life
EBN-OZN - AEIOU Sometimes Y
So- Are You Sure
ABC- Poison Arrow

Rock On 80's Woo Hoo!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant from Start to Finish.......2002-04-14

Despite the complaints below, there are great songs here that, in fact, are hard to find elsewhere: AEIOU Sometimes Y, Hanging On a Heart Attack, Sidewalk Talk, Make a Circuit with Me, and Shattered Dreams. And that reviewer assumes that you already have the same discs as he does. Um, OK.

2 out of 5 stars If you valued the 80's, don't buy this compilation.......1999-08-30

You'd think that an 80's anthology of music would understand that it caters to an audience which is nostalgic toward that decade.

I give this two stars only because you can't take away from the 80's music, but I figure that the inane commentary on the CD booklet should be calculated in this rating too. It was highly unnecessary and insulting to 80's fans to include disparaging remarks about the decade and banal political commentary by obvious leftist sympathizers.

5 out of 5 stars HANK........2007-06-02

I already have all of these songs on cd, but I would like to have the original cd versions that were released. Anyone who does not think these songs are part of Hank's best work must be smoking grass. Country state of mind is one his best songs ever released. Must have for this redneck and all of the other true redneck fans. "Its alright to be a redneck", says Alan Jackson and I R 1.

4 out of 5 stars These Aren't MY Selections for Greatest Hits.......2005-07-10

I've been a Hank Jr. fan since the late 70s. There are many of his songs that I consider to be among my favorites. None of these makes the cut for me. Even so, most of these were popular songs. Each has the "Hank Jr." feel to it and is done in his combination honky-tonk/good ole boy style. It is a style that began to wear a bit thin in his later career but the staleness is not quite present in these selection.

Fans should appreciate this collection. I think it fine but nothing to write home about.

3 out of 5 stars His name is Bocephus.......2004-05-27

This is Hank Junior's third greatest hits album for Warner Brothers. Most of these songs made the country Top Ten, but they are a bit too "redneck" for my taste. If you are a redneck, you will probably enjoy this CD more than I do.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best GREATEST HITZ.......2002-10-08

Now I'm not going to lie Hank Williams Jr. and Sr. are my favorite (country) singer(s) and I love just about all their music. If you love Hank get this CD. If you only some of Hank Jr.'s stuff at its best then still get it. This is definitely worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-01-12

Why is Volume 3 now out of print? Volume 3 completes the awesome set of John Denver's radio versions of his greatest hits. I have all three volumes and the music is great and there's no reason to have Volume 3 out of print. "Love Again" and "Autograph" are great versions here. If you can find this album and are a John Denver fan, this is a must.

5 out of 5 stars JD Greatest Hits Vol Three.......2004-05-01

I consider this John Denver's best of all time. You can't top "How Can I Leave You Again" , "Love Again" ,"Seasons of the Heart" and "Autograph". All of the rest of the tunes are gems as well and John's sounded strong and clear and true. It is a crime that the other two greatest hits albums are available and this one is not. Fans would buy it up at the store or on line if it was made available. What are the record companies thinking?

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best of John Denver.......2001-11-08

This is my favorite of all John Denver's albums. His voice is at its best and every number on this album is excellent. My particular favorites are "Perhaps Love" (unlike a previous reviewer, I think Placido Domingo's voice is terrific in combination with Denver's) and "Wild Montana Sky", a beautiful anthem to Denver's open spaces/free spirit theme. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Of John Denver's Three Greatest Hits Albums!.......2000-09-04

This is the final of the three albums of John Denver's greatest hits released even as he was continuing to make them. Here we see the additional monster hits that kept him in a position of preeminence, popularity and superstardom in the 1970s. In his heyday no one was outselling his albums or out-booking John for concert appearances, and considering the incredible talents on the scene at the time, that is a pretty good indication of just how popular he was, and just how universal John Denver's appeal was. No one else sang of the wide-open possibilities and seemingly limitless possibilities for a good life awaited those who would free themselves from the bonds that confined them and just dare to soar along with him in the wild open spaces. All the tracks here are terrific, from "How Can I Leave you Again?", a wonderful love song, to "Shanghai Breezes", "Seasons Of The Heart", and "Perhaps Love" (with Placido Domingo) all from his wonderful "Seasons Of The Heart" album, to Welcome to My Morning", to "Dancing With The Mountains", another of his many paeans to appreciating the beauties of nature and the natural life.

John, more than any of his contemporaries, actively caught the public's imagination regarding the wonders of the natural environment, and in a time when environmental concerns were splashed all over the headlines and the evening news, John's vision of popular concern for and stewardship of the natural world was immensely important. Indeed, to speak of John now is to evoke a mental picture of him backpacking in the Rockies, that shock of unruly blond hair tossled about and a grin as big as the wide open sky behind him. I love all the songs here, including "Wild Montana Skies", "Some Days Are Diamonds', and "The Gold And Beyond", about the Olympic movement, and my own special favorite, "I Want To Live". This album represents a wonderful overview of the mature work of John as he thrilled a whole generation with his own perspective of a meaningful life lived in the natural splendor of nature. I know you will enjoy this as well as the other two in this three album series of John's greatest hits. Far out!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......1999-06-12

I bought all three of his greatest hits album and I like all of them except for "Perhaps Love" in Greatest Hits 2 & 3 which he had a duet with Luciano Pavarotti. Pavarotti's inclusion in the song is a mistake and the song sounds terrible with him singing. Overall, however, the album is good to listen to. Three cheers for the late John Denver!

4 out of 5 stars Conway Greatest Hits Volum 3 .......2006-07-15

This is the best CD that he ever made and I could not find it in any store. I was so glad to finally be able to find it again.

5 out of 5 stars Late eighties country hits from Conway.......2004-02-10

After many successful years with MCA, Conway left for Warner in 1983 but returned in 1987. This compilation covers the period after his return and contains tracks from three albums (Borderline, Still in your dreams, House on old lonesome road) plus one newly recorded track, Fit to be tied down. This track is not available on any other Conway Twitty album, perhaps because it stalled outside the country top twenty when released as a single, so Conway's committed fans will want this album for that track. The other nine tracks can all is found in his 4-CD boxed set, so if you have that or are thinking of buying it, you may decide to give this a miss. Fit to be tied down is good but not essential.

Most of these songs made the top ten in the country charts including two number ones, but the public were more interested in the new generation of singers so Conway's albums did not sell as well as they once had. This is a shame, because Conway sounded as good as ever - perhaps even better since he gave up smoking in 1985.

Many of the songs here are ballads of the kind that Conway was so good at although there are enough up-tempo songs here to keep things interesting. Saturday night special stands out from the rest, being a little different - it is a great story song about a down-and-out couple finding love in a pawnshop. It is the kind of song that I would expect from Kenny Rogers, but it's nice to hear Conway tackling this type of material. The rest of the songs can be described as typical Conway - excellent.

Unless you have or plan to buy the boxed set, this is a worthy addition to any country music collection. Perhaps these are not the songs that Conway is best remembered but they are just as good as most of his earlier hits.

5 out of 5 stars Conway's final big hits.......2003-01-01

This CD came along in 1990 amidst Conway's 25th, or, Silver Anniversary as a country singer. MCA compiled all the singles from 1987, 1988, and 1989 and added a new one "Fit To Be Tied Down". Conway's career had been one of numerous #1 hits (at the time he had chalked up 54 #1 hits and 22 Top-10's) and in the world of country music, he was the only artist that had debuted on the charts in the 1950's {pop music} still sending singles into the Top-10 as late as 1989! Although "Fit To Be Tied Down" stalled at #21 on the Radio and Records chart, that was far better than any of his peers were able to do. The CD contains his 53rd and 54th #1 hits: "Julia" from 1987 and "She's Got a Single Thing In Mind" from 1989 among his last major Top-10 hits: the #6 "That's My Job", the #2 "I Want To Know You Before We Make Love", "I Wish I Was Still in Your Dreams' hit #4, "Goodbye Time" reached #7, and "Saturday Night Special" reached #6. Also included are two 1989 Top-20 hits: the #19 "House On Old Lonesome Road" and the #19 "Who's Gonna Know?". This CD, naturally, has been replaced in the following years with more comprehensive CDs but if you have "Volume One" from 1972, "Volume Two" from 1976, "The Very Best of Conway Twitty" from 1978, "Number Ones" from 1982, "Classic Conway" from 1983, "Latest Greatest Hits" from 1984, "#1's:The Warner Brothers Years" from 1988, the TV advertised album "The Very Best of Conway Twitty" from 1989, then getting "Volume Three" from 1990 is the next step for completion.
