Customer Reviews:
A LITTLE UNEVEN BUT A GOOD INTRODUCTION TO THEIR MUSIC.......2006-06-17
THIS WAS MY "RE INTRODUCTION" TO THE BEACH BOYS MUSIC BACK IN THE 80'S (PRIOR TO THAT, I HAD OWNED 'BEST OF THE BEACH BOYS). THIS COLLECTION INTRODUCED ME TO A LOT OF COOL SONGS THAT WEREN'T ON 'BEST OF' SUCH AS 'CAROLINE,NO','DO IT AGAIN','DON'T WORRY BABY'. THE ONE COMPLAINT AGAINST THIS COLLECTION IS THAT THE SONGS THEY PUT ON THERE FROM THE 70'S WERE NOT VERY GOOD AND THE BEACH BOYS DID A LOT OF GOOD STUFF IN THOSE YEARS TOO
There's a party going down at the rock and roll show........2005-08-14
This is a good compilation of Beach Boys songs. But there are a few curious choices made in song selection. Why is the minor b-side "409" included when there are many bigger hits that were left off? Don't get me wrong, I love "409", but it's not a "greatest hit". But the main fault here is the inclusion of two mediocre new recordings at the end of the CD. Still, it's easy to find a cheap used copy of this, so it's worth getting.
"beat the Beatles"?? ....that's a good one..........2005-07-12
First things first: this is a very good complilation on the whole and I agree with some reviewers that at least a couple of "substitutions" might have raised the rating to 5 stars. Probably THE definitive one is the recent Sounds of summer.
But these comments putting a kind of rivalry between the B.Boys and the Beatles are not only useless but stupid: it wasn't a horse race but an artful competition that led to fantastic music from both parts. Besides, great mutual admiration between Brian Wilson and P.McCartney.
But what can we answer to a previous reviewer? Well, just for fun... so maybe the Beach Boys have more than 100 "classics", they have surely the best bass player in pop/rock history (Carol Kaye???), one of the best solid/steady drummers in rock (ask Vinnie Colaiuta), a unique blend of elegance and personality in lead guitar (ask Gilmour or Clapton), and.....well, the 4th one was a certain John Lennon....
"The Beach Boys beat the Beatles"......give me a break a keep listening ONLY to the Beach Boys.....they're really good!!!
One of their best numerous collections........2005-05-02
Well, until "Sounds Of Summer" was released, this was the best and longest hits album they had. "Endless Summer" is excellent also, but this adds the "Pet Sounds" tracks, even though it omits other songs. Also recently released was the "Greatest Hits" volumes 1-3, good, but less tracks on each disc. Basically it's just a matter of what songs you want. Can you deal without "Kokomo", then this is fine, otherwise get the 30 track "Sounds Of Summer". Or "Endless Summer" and "Pet Sounds" are a good combo.
Yet another "Hits" compilation on the Beach Boys.......2005-03-25
Two types of people will look at this: completists who want anything at all that says "Beach Boys" on it (for the rare performance w/Bob Dylan on "Rock and Roll to the Rescue" and the band's cover of Mamas and Papas classic "California Dreamin'") and casual fans who are looking for a cheaply priced greatest hits.
COMPLETISTS: "Rock and Roll to the Rescue" really is pretty boring once you get over the chuckle of how funny it is to hear His Bobness with the Hawthorne Five. "Cali Dreamin'" can be found on "Greatest Hits Volume 3" now as well. But heck it's under $3 used, so knock yourself out.
CASUAL FANS WANTING A SINGLE CD HITS DISC: It's this one or SOUNDS OF SUMMER. Let's compare, shall we?
PROS:
If price is the biggest factor, this one will be cheaper used (under a buck) for 25 cuts. It has "Caroline, No" which isn't on SOUNDS but since EVERYONE should own PET SOUNDS that doesn't matter in the end.
CONS: Lots of uninteresting tracks. You can do without "Rock and Roll to the Rescue","Come Go with Me" and "Rock and Roll Music". SOUNDS also has the benefit of having several big 'car songs' that aren't here ("Little Deuce Coupe" and "Shut Down"), their last big chart song ("Kokomo"),"In My Room", a fantastic cover of the Ronettes' "I Can Hear Music", and a couple little known gems that you may discover you like once you hear them ("Darlin'","Wild Honey").
BOTTOM LINE: If you're near broke or a competist, buy this one. If you want one CD with most of the best Beach Boys material on it, get SOUNDS OF SUMMER.

No.. Not This One!.......2002-04-06
I didn!t like it all. It's just waste of money...
Some interesting new interpretations.......2001-06-03
Made in the U.S.A. is the most recent of the Springsteen tributes, following Cover Me, The Bruce Springsteen Songbook (UK), One Step Up/Two Steps Back, Pickin' On Springsteen and Badlands. I wasn't sure what to expect. Unlike Badlands, which had been widely publicized by Sub Pop, I more or less stumbled upon this Purple Pyramid release. Unlike some of the earlier cover/tribute albums that had some previously released songs (i.e. Because the Night by Patti Smith or Fire by the Pointer Sisters) or a focus (Badlands, which was a tribute to his Nebraska album), Made In the USA is an interesting blend of songs spanning Springsteen's career. There are also many notable guests, such as Mike Love on Hungry Heart and Ronnie Spector on Brilliant Disguise. The opening and closing of the CD, along with two interludes, offers brief instrumental adaptations of Born In the USA. Overall, the songs are pretty good and several of the interpreations are unique, although this album is not as good as Badlands or One Step Up/Two Steps Back. I would say that it is a must for any huge Springsteen fan or collector, and even the casual fan might find it interesting. Although, if you are not a big fan of cover/tribute albums, you might want to skip this one.

What a compilation!.......2004-01-09
It is a terrible shame that this CD is out of print. What a CD it is! What a collection of classics by the Beach Boys! Contains great songs like "Surfin' USA", "409", "Help Me, Rhonda", and "Wouldn't It Be Nice".
'What song do you love on the CD?', you might ask. A song I absolutely love is the new recording (available only here) titled "Rock 'N' Roll to the Rescue". Great song! The group's rendition of the 1966 hit (by the Mamas and the Papas) "California Dreamin'" is very well done, also.
The One To Find.......2003-09-19
Awesome compilation, if only for "California Dreaming". This one needs to be re-issued.
Yes, an ultra-rare track !.......2002-05-19
Both ROCK AND ROLL TO THE RESCUE and CALIFORNIA DREAMIN were new recordings made especially for this compilation when it was released in 1986. California Dreamin has been re-released on
some newer CD's (currently on Greatest Hits Vol 3 - The Brother Years)
but ROCK AND ROLL TO THE RESCUE has never been released elsewhere
and this CD is currently Out Of Print in the US. It probably won't be re-issued.
Made In U.S.A........2001-05-26
This is by far the best of all the Beach Boy's greatest hit's album's. It just cover's all of the best hit's from the early 60's up through the late 70's-early 80's. There is one ultra rare song on here that I don't believe I have seen on any of they're regular albums, that song is called "Rock N Roll To The Rescue" it must have been released either in the late 70's or early 80's. One of my favorite tracks on the album is the re make of the Mama's and Papa's classic "California Dreaming" I think that the Beach Boy's do a fantastic job on this song and one of the things I like best about the song is at the beggining when they go "All the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray" right after they say the sky is gray you hear a rumble of thunder which I thought was pretty cool. So yeah without a doubt if you want a Beach Boy's greatest hit's album this is the one to get. This item is currently out of print. Hopefully Capitol will make a re master of this album cause it truly is great. Here is the track listing to the album [...]: 1. Surfin' Safari 2. 409 3. Surfin U.S.A. 4. Be True To Your School 5. Surfer Girl 6. Dance, Dance, Dance 7. Fun, Fun, Fun 8. I Get Around 9. Help Me Rhonda 10. Don't Worry Baby 11. California Girls 12. When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) 13. Barbara Ann 14. Good Vibrations 15. Heroes And Villans 16. Wouldn't It Be Nice 17. Sloop John B. 18. God Only Knows 19. Caroline No 20. Do It Again 21. Rock And Roll Music 22. Come Go With Me 23. Getcha Back 24. Rock N Roll To The Rescue 25. California Dreamin
It also say's on the back of the cd that the album is dedicated to the Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson who tragically died by drowning. R.I.P. Dennis
