Probably the best one disc collection right now.......2002-02-26
Luckily, this is a first-rate collection of the Kinks greatest hits from the sixties and very early seventies. It has all the major early hits that put the Kinks on the map, and all the hits from the late sixties up to "Lola."
I have to disagree, however, with the first reviewer, who implied that their only indispensable album is ARTHUR. And the compilers of this CD are perfectly aware of that. Not a single cut off what many believe is their best album, THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY, is included on this album. Obviously, they anticipated that aspiring Kinks fans would want both albums. ARTHUR is a very fine album, but it has many cuts that are less than essential, while VILLAGE GREEN is without a single weak cut. It is also one of the great concept albums of the sixties. So, while in one sense it is a weakness of this collection that nothing from VILLAGE GREEN is included, it is actually a blessing, since it means that both can be purchased with no reduplication.
I would, however, strongly recommend two other superb Kinks albums in addition to this anthology, VILLAGE GREEN, and ARTHUR: SOMETHING ELSE and FACE TO FACE. Although cuts from those albums are included on this anthology, including the stunning "Waterloo Sunset" and "Death of a Clown" (Dave Davies's greatest song) from SOMETHING ELSE and "Sunday Afternoon" from FACE TO FACE, they both contain many other first rate songs.
One of the strong points of this collection is that some of the harder-to-find hits are included, in particular the surreally beautiful "Days" (which was also magnificently covered by both Elvis Costello the late Kirsty MacColl). For some reason, this song, one of Ray Davies's greatest compositions and one of their bigger singles, almost never turns up on their anthologies. The sound quality is also first rate, something not to be taken for granted in Kinks's anthologies.
Great tunes from a band always in the shadow of the Beatles.......2000-11-17
Tracks such as Waterloo Sunset, You really got me, Lola, Days, A Well Respected Man, and All Day all of the Night are just a few amazing tracks that are on this album.
On buying this album you will should already be conscious of a couple of tracks that you know. Then on your intial listen it is likely that you will be constantly saying to yourself, "Hey, I love that song - I never knew they wrote that." Thereafter you should find that many of the tracks will grow on you. The mere variety and number of classic tracks on this album will mean that this should be much-listened album in your collection even after a few years down the line. I suppose that is genius which are the Kinks.
A Must!
All the Kinks you need outside Arthur........1998-12-22
