Spare Yourself the Disappointment.......2007-05-10
If you loved Final Straw and Eyes Open, you'll hate When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up. Trust me. Like the majority of Snow Patrol's new fans, I discovered the underrated rock group when watching Live 8. So we bought Final Straw and were not disappointed. It's a great album and in my opinion is better than Eyes Open, although that too is an album worth checking out.
When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up is not. Like many, I thought Final Straw was Snow Patrol's first album and was happy to learn that they had two other albums, one released in 1998 and another in 2001. My joy died the moment I played this album. Don't get me wrong. I didn't expect it to sound like Final Straw and I love it when rock bands experiment with their sound, but When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up is without doubt Snow Patrol's worst album thus far. If you absolutely must buy one of Snow Patrol's early albums, buy their first - Songs for Polar Bears. It's a good debut with some memorable, catchy tunes. What's more, it proves to Snow Patrol's critics that the band can really rock hard when they want to. While it's not as good as Final Straw or Eyes Open, Songs for Polar Bears is a masterpiece compared to this one. You've been warned.
Great Music.......2007-03-12
This is early Snow Patrol, but this band out of Ireland has it together. If you like their new music, this is a must.
When it's all over you'll never notice.......2006-11-10
As a major fan of Snow Patrol, (even before this year, yes) I was very interested in this album because it is the one no one talks about. After purchasing it, I kind of figured out why. It isn't bad... that's certainly not the word for it. Its dreamy soundscape and ethereal vocals are anything but bad. It's just... nothing truly special. To me, a lot of these songs sound the same and if I play the cd in my car (on auto repeat) I never realize when it finishes and starts again. There are a few small gems, "Olive Grove Facing the Sea" and the title track, but when compared to other Snow Patrol greats, they're something I keep in reserve for a rainy day. For anyone well-versed in Snow Patrol, if you're going to compare albums (and you really shouldn't) it would be most like Songs for Polar Bears. Anyway, I wouldn't put it on the top of your wishlist, but if you're looking for some new music and haven't figured out what to get yet... this wouldn't be a bad choice.
Interesting to say the least..........2006-03-05
Having bought(and loved)Final Straw, I decided to give When It's... a chance. Although this album is not as indie downbeat as Final Straw it's still an excellent album. There are some genuinely excellent songs on this like Making Enemies, Chased By I dont know what and One Night Is Not Enough, while simple but geniusly done songs like Black and Blue, Make Love To Me Forever and the title song work well. So, overall, a good but not great album.
Delusional Much??.......2006-02-24
How anyone on this fine planet of ours could consider this album anything but extraordinary simply baffles me! Gary and the boys have seriously come through with the goods on this album!
"An Olive Grove Facing the Sea" is one of my all time favourite songs. Beautifully sung, written and produced. If you've ever longed for someone that you feel like you can't breath if you don't see them, this is the song for you.
The other standout on this album is the heart wrenching, and completely captivating "One Night is Not Enough". Talk about your honest expression, and I'm sure there isn't a person alive who can't relate to this song.
Overall, this album is one of my "moon" albums, meaning if I could only take 3 cd's with me to the moon, this is one of them. Right alongside Coldplay's "Rush" and DMB ""Before These Crowded Streets"

Customer Reviews:
Great group.......2007-04-29
LOVE this band. Too bad they broke up. Their sound is sort of like the Brant Anderson Group but different. If you like BAG you will love the unicorns.
SWEET NOTHING!.......2007-04-22
They know the scope of their work...........silly but sophisticated and RIDICULOUSLY catchy songs....ALL OF THEM.
You need this. If you have ever been the caretaker for a hamster or cheap petshop lizard, this is your album. This is the childhood tribute to childhood "love"....musically.
Imagine the band as BORED EAGLE SCOUTS...15-year-old, rich, apathetic, unsatisfied-with-adolescence-yet-jovial eagle scouts.
What the F***?.......2007-02-04
I never write reviews, but just had to this time. I have to tell Ira Moon(in response to her review) to shut the hell up!!! Nobody wants to read your rant about the bible; these reviews are for the music and the artists, not your biblical babble. I love The Unicorns, you might too.
Undercooked Indie Pop.......2006-06-03
2 1/2 stars
An album that basically states "we're here, we're unique, we have some talent", rather then accomplish anything on it's own musically-sadly this indulgent but perceptive band left this as little proof of even existing and hopefully are articulating some of this unfocused talent into more memorable projects. The over indulgences with 4/4 sound manipulation, casio beats, overtly quirky vocals distract from their talent at deconstructing and undermining a catchy pop song with respectable guitarkid-chops to boot. This is an interesting footnote if you have time and energy invested in the independent scene, or if you just really loved warped, but playful lo-fi druggery.
gone but not forgotten.......2006-04-05
If you loved the works of Nick and J'aime as much as I did, then you'll love their new project called, 'Islands' - "Return To The Sea".

Rosie Thomas's voice is strong, with a folky quiver and, when not backed by a steady, resourceful band, she accompanies herself on acoustic guitar and a piano so deep and resonant it recalls the purposefully homespun work of Victoria Williams . Yet despite its nostalgic bent, When We Were Small is far from twee. "Farewell" opens with the family happily chatting back in 1980, chirpy little Rosie's voice ringing out, then slides into a pained lament about her parents' eventual divorce. "Wedding Day" sees Rosie seeking a life as joyful as the first day of a marriage turned sour. "I'm gonna be carefree," she ends, "and let nothing pass me by/ Never ever again." "I Run" comes across like a sorrowful yet angry Tori Amos. Heavily marked by fear of abandonment, yet romantic and hopeful still, this is an unexpectedly beautiful piece. --Dominic Wills
Album Description
This is Rosie's first long player. Ten songs, focused on vivid childhood memories and images from the perspective of a young girl in the process of growing up, dealing with complex emotions. Peppered with audio samples from her childhood, the record spotlights Rosie's striking voice, which rings out wonderfully in the spirit of Joni Mitchell. When We Were Small is Rosie Thomas' debut full-length and on it she sings, plays guitar and piano.

Girl with a guitar, so what?.......2005-01-19
Is it art? Or is it art school?
Absolutely beautiful.......2005-01-07
I came across this artist and this album when I was searching through the musical selections of other Amazon buyers who had purchased some of my other favorites. I'm so glad I did. This album is just hypnotic. I think it would appeal to diverse tastes ranging from fans of Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan to Alison Krauss, Chantal Kreviazuk and Jewel. Rosie has a pure and beautiful voice that can both uplift you and break your heart. My favorite song on this album is "Farewell", perhaps because I just went through a breakup and the simplicity of the song and emotion-laden lyrics take your breath away. My other favorite is "Bicycle Tricycle", a song that appeals to every woman who sometimes aches for the simpler times of childhood, particularly when you've just been hurt. The way that Rosie interjects faint recordings of childhood dialog into her music only add to the beauty of her songs. I would highly recommend this album to anyone looking for a serene escape that will make you smile and, yes, cry...but that's not always a bad thing.
Awesome.......2004-07-09
First CD that's brought tears to my eyes in quite some time. Simply raw with emotion, this is a beautiful album.
Rosie rocks!.......2003-07-18
I bought this album immediately after seeing Rosie in concert. She was the support act for Jewel, and I was just blown away when I heard her voice. This album does not fail to disappoint - Rosie has an amazing voice. The album has an acoustic feel to it - it's simplicity is part of the reason it is so good. Her lyrics are soulful and melodious - ranging from the upbeat "Two dollar shoes", to the beautifully sung "October". I just love this album - I'm sure you will too!
Beautiful, Uplifting, Fullfilling.......2003-05-11
Rosie Thomas has exceptional talent for creating beautiful lyrics and melodies. She has a rare gift and her songs have universal appeal. Some of the pieces on this CD surely will become "Classics" covered by other performers, "Have You Seen My Love" for example. Rosie's own vocal interpretations are unique and lend so much enjoyable emotion to her songs. She slides beautifully in and out of falsetto on individual syllables of a single word in a way that is thrilling to hear, and her own instrumental accompaniments lend such depth of feeling. Listen for her unusual phrasing where she breaks a line of lyrics on an unexpected word as in "Farewell" where she sings "Farewell so long and..." . This adds interest and texture, and makes the song more a dialogue coming straight from her heart. "When We Were Small" has the thread of a story through it like the soundtrack from a appealing and long-running Broadway musical that leaves people singing the songs to themselves and feeling better about everything. Maybe that is where young Rosie's exceptional talent will take her. I love this recording, so what ever she does, let's hear more.

terrific cd's at a bargain price!.......2007-07-10
When I Dream is the first album (actually 8-track) that I ever heard by Crystal Gayle. Of course, I'd heard Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue on the radio but didn't have the album. My grandfather had a bunch of 8-tracks that he was giving away and I snatched up this gem from Crystal Gayle. When I Dream is the album that started a lifelong musical love affair with this beatiful and talented lady and her recordings of jazz classics, such as Cry Me A River on this cd, started my musical love affair with that type of music. I wore out that 8-track and later purchased the cassette but it was a reissue of the original lp and they cut out a few songs on the cassette. I'm just elated to have this original lp on cd. Other 2-for-1's are recorded on one cd and you have to listen to both lp's but this one comes with 2 cd's in one case, I prefer this method. I'd seen this offered on ebay for triple the price and sometimes the bid goes over a hundred dollars. I love the cd but that's an awful lot of money for a cd. I'm so happy to have found this great bargain on Amazon.
Crystal Gayle is one of the most underrated singers of country music, probably because her sound is not so country. She actually has more number one hits than her more famous sister, Loretta Lynn. Both women are talented but I prefer the slick jazzy feeling of Crystal,s music over Loretta's traditional style. This cd showcases her range of style from the Johnny Cash original, I Still Miss Someone to the remake of Cry Me A River, a wonderful Julie London classic. The firs cd is We Must Believe In Magic which includes the signature song, Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue. Alot of the songs have been reissued on other collections but not all of them have been released on cd so that makes this set a must have for any Crystal Gayle fan. Be cautious of the ebay scammers that are selling this for triple the price that Amazon offers it!

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.
hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16
i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2002-08-20
This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

My son loves this.......2005-01-27
My son is 5 years old and he loves this CD. He will gladly play quietly for hours as long as he can listen to Gene Kelly tell him stories. These are classic fairy tales all brought to life through song and acting by the great Gene Kelly. Every kid should have this CD.

Roots and basics done right.......2007-07-09
I can't remember the last time I bought an album and said to myself, "That was a really great, well rounded and thought out CD". But then I bought this record and I can't stop listening to it. You can definitely hear all the little bits of Stephen Pedersen's past in it. Cursive's depths, and White Octave's style. I think one of the things that's makes it such a great listen, is that it is superbly balanced. It has songs that you can play for someone that only listens to the crap on the radio and they would appreciate it, and you could play it for the people that "if its not underground its horrible" and even they would like it. If you are looking for something that will keep you attention and you will find yourself going back to over and over again, get this record.
Album Number 2 from Criteria Proves Saddle Creek Correct In Signing Them.......2005-09-29
Have you ever heard of White Octave? How about Cursive? Well, both of these bands were founded by Criteria frontman Stephen Pederson. After a long time of struggling to get signed by record labels, Saddle Creek got smart and noticed Criteria. I'll put it this way: Criteria play catchy, riff-driven rock songs with amazingly well-written lyrics. Some people say that these guys sound similar to Jimmy Eat World, and I tend to agree. I highly recommend "Prevent the World," "Good Luck," and "Grey Matter." Criteria's live shows rock as well, so be sure to check their tour dates. This CD is definitely worth the buy. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

Support a Great Canadian Rock Band!!!.......2006-06-28
This is one of Canada's best exports. Crunching guitar riffs mixed with intricate female vocal harmonies and self-deprecating yet humourous lyrics. If you like other great Canadian bands like the Barenaked Ladies and Crash Test Dummies, these guys should please your palatte.
A better compilation than sex & food.......2005-12-31
This album includes all of the band's singles, plus some important album tracks. It also includes two new tracks; a cover of Prince's when doves cry (an excellent cover in my opinion) and Hey Mary Anne (a song that's standard TPOH). It also includes the original version of I'm an adult now; which I haven't heard since I was in high school. To top it all off, the songs have been remastered in 24 bit, and the refreshed sonics are a real treat. The only song missing from this compilation in my opinion is walking in the woods.
I have sex & food and just purchased this one, and in my opinion, if you have to choose, get this one as it is hands down the better of the two.
