Customer Reviews:
I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11
This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.
I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.
"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.
MarMSED.......2005-08-27
The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.
Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24
Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.
The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.
Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.
Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Customer Reviews:
Grand Funk's BEST!.......2006-07-09
Grand Funk had many great albums, but none of them equals Born To Die. It is simply a fantastic album and even after all these years the songs hold up. (Dues is my personal favorite Grand Funk song of all time.) Every one of the songs on this album is excellent.
The true GRF fan needs only a few of their CDs:
1) Grand Funk Live - a must have
2) We're An American Band - for obvious reasons
3) Born To Die - see above
4) Caught In The Act - one of the best live albums of all time
5) .... um... that's it.. there is no number 5 unless maybe one of the retrospective CDs.
Grand Funk were never better then this!.......2005-11-04
One of the best CDs by Grand Funk Railroad, hard to believe this was overlooked by most of their fans. Radio charged hits ruled, and since no songs were strongly promoted on the radio, fans did not respond overwhelmingly to this release. After all, Sally was not the most catchy of the GFR singles. Locomotion, Footstompin Music, Some Kind Of Wonderful, We're An American Band, etc sold albums galore (no matter what the overall content of the album was). But of all their overall records, this was one of the best. The guitar work is stunning, the songwriting is TOP NOTCH here. It was sad that album and CD were not available for almost 15 years. Since my vinyl wore out a long time ago, I finally picked up a Russian bootleg many years ago and have been enjoying it ever since. NOW finally, they have released this great CD again with bonus songs, and remastered quality. If your a Grand Funk fan and never discovered this one before, do yourself a favor and order Born To Die. You won't regret it I promise!
GFR RULES MAN!!.......2005-09-18
oh come on your guys ive been listening to BTD for years now and some of you it`s new to you it`s a great CD the sound can still be up there even in todays music great tunes from the one and only GFR especally DUES and born to die and love is dyin i have met mark and don and they are just great guys everybody should get this great cd GFR`S best by far.
DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS BY THE QUARTET FUNK.......2004-12-14
I will never understand why this album sold very poorly. It had excellent songs that were going along with the newer style of the 1970s rock and roll music. My only complaint is that I think CRAIG FROST should have played a grand acoustic piano instead of the newer type of pianos. MARK FARNERS' "TALK TO THE PEOPLE," "MR POLITICIAN," and the title track are my favorite songs with outstanding arrangements on this album. The fast paced "MR. POLITICIAN" has an excellent guitar and organ opening riffs and vocalsby MARK and the band, "TALK TO THE PEOPLE" has excellent piano riffs by CRAIG, sax by WET WILLIE'S singer JIMMY HALL, guitar riffs by MARK, and outstanding vocals by MARK and the band, and the title track (written about MARK'S cousin who died in a motorcycle accident) is an outstanding beginner with the piano intro, outstanding vocals by MARK and the band, organ and guitar riffs. On the other hand, it was a shame about MARK'S cousin who died in a motorcycle accident. Meanwhile, the arrangement of "DUES" with the guitar solos, clavinet and organ riffs, the bass guitar, and DON'S lead vocal and drum playing reminds me of PINK FLOYD'S "ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL PART 2." and the guitar solo on GOOD THINGS that features excellent vocals by MARK, piano riffs, and harmony vocals also reminds me of the signiture sound of PETER FRAMPTON'S guitar from "FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE". The arrangement of the soulful SALLY with MARK'S lead vocal, harmony vocals, the piano riffs, and harmonica by JIMMI HALL reminds me of either CHICAGO or JEFFERSON STARSHIP that later featured MICKEY THOMAS. The piano intro, drums, vocals, guitar, bass guitar, and organ riffs on DON'S TAKE ME are excellent, and so is his I FELL FOR YOUR LOVE that also features excellent vocals, guitar and organ riffs. At first, I thought that DON'S LOVE IS DYIN', also featuring excellent vocals, drums, bass guitar, guitar and piano riffs, was about the tentions developing between that band's main songwriters MARK and DON over what types of songs to write about. The group written instrumental GENEVIEVE (I have not listened to the live rehearsal version yet) is excellent too. Furthermore, the unreleased "BARE NAKED WOMAN" that is sung by MARK has some great rhythm and blues that recaptured the psychodelic days for the power trio GFR. I love this album a whole lot better than "GOOD SINGIN' GOOD PLAYIN'." Although a majority may or do not agree, I believe MARK wrote some excellent songs, if not outstanding, on this album like on "ALL THE GIRLS IN THE WORLD BEWARE."

I love this album! The remaster sounds great, high points; all of em! Get it Quick.

This One Is Good---But Not "The Best".......2006-09-12
Type the following into the search on Amazon to find the best English version of The Merry Widow: Léhar: The Land of Smiles; The Merry Widow; The Count of Luxembourg (Highlights)
Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ", September 11, 2006
The "best version" of the "Merry Widow" is NOT this one. The best version is the one with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved that rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note LOUDER than the chorus---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, the Bronhill CD is made in Holland and "there is one left", so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.
Joan Sutherland under the baton of Richard Bonynge.......2004-02-24
THE MERRY WIDOW, Franz Lehar's dizzying and delightful operetta chestnut, is given the grand treatment in this highlights album featuring Joan Sutherland.
There have been many widows (including June Bronhill, Anna Moffo, Beverly Sills), though Joan Sutherland's WIDOW has always been especially grand. The supporting cast on this recording features Werner Krenn as Count Danilo with Valerie Masterson as Valencienne, Regina Resnik as Zo-Zo and John Brecknock as Camille, with Francis Egerton, John Fryatt, Graeme Ewer and the Ambrosian Singers.
Sutherland's performance as Hanna Glawari is full of masterful strokes and she approaches the score with a twinkle in her eye, aware of the comedy in the piece. Richard Bonynge conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra and they are especially chill-inducing with the Overture.
All-in-all a superlative recording at a bargain price.
Performances better than the recording.......2004-01-18
Unfortunately this CD was made from the Australian TV tapeing of The Merry Widow, a shame that the microphones are not of high enough quality to capture the really fine performances, it is hard enough to understand what is being sung when properly recorded let alone when the equipment stinks, however if you enjoy Joan Southerland as much as I do you can overlook the flaws in the recording and just get carried away with the voice, it would be nice if a libretto had been included, a rarity today, that used to be common in the era of the LP

pretty good.......2005-06-02
Still Remains' debut album, "If Love Was Born to Die" is certainly one that will appeal to fans of not only hardcore, but also straight up metal and rock fans. Hailing from the Midwest, it is surprising that something good has come from that area besides serial killers (a joke). Still Remains certainly kicks in the jams for the majority of these tracks. The opening track, "Six and One," definitely shows what this band brings to the table: good melody, catchy riffs, and well-done vocals. The main gripe about this album is that it sounds a lot like Bleeding Through, which is not a bad thing, but does nothing to bring originality to the band. The star track on this album is "Light Through Skin", which possesses one hell of a catchy chorus, where the keyboards nicely harmonize the guitar riff.
The keyboards on this album almost go in hand in hand with the music, yet fails at some points. Personally, keyboards in a hardcore band or a metal band in this case does not bring an immediate smile to my face, especially as heard in early Bleeding Through albums, where the keyboards were totally out of place. In "Recovery", the keys try to heighten the intensity of the track, but only make the song sound a bit cheesy. In addition, with the album being only 6 tracks long, the last track is a two and a half minute long piano epilogue, which cuts the number of real songs down to 5, which lessens the effect this album has on me.
Vocally, the screams are well done, reminiscent of Bleeding Through. Good, throaty vocals is to be expected with the occasional singing section all hardcore bands cannot leave out nowadays.
Overall, Still Remains comes out relatively strong with this release. With good guitar riffs, harmonizations by the keyboards, and strong vocals, these guys have the ability to come out strong in the scene.
These Christians know how to JAM!.......2005-03-19
Awesome band. If you're into hardcore then look no further. My favorite tracks are the first three. The intro to "Six and One" just gets your blood flowing and is an awesome opener for a CD. This CD contains mostly screaming, but when the singer sings clean vocals...it's amazing. After getting pounded by this band leaves their listener with a peaceful, soothing outro. The lyrics are very tasteful and poetic, some positive and others saddening...but all of it brought forth to you with brutality. Even though this is an EP I've been listening to it over and over. Can't wait for their new CD in May. Check them both out
This Is A Band Of Bands In A Land Of Bands.......2005-02-17
My favorite band. Six and One is an amazing song and stands out the most in my mind...there's just something about the energy in that song. the rest of the songs are amazing as well. a band that you can get into within a couple of listens. the last song or instrumental peice is worthy of a skip but after that i just replay. but i can't wait till of love and lunacy comes out
Still Remains = Hardcore at its best.......2004-12-21
I've been listening to hardcore music for a very long time and I have never heard a band this good in years, it is a shame that this is only and Ep, but with this release it's quality rather than quanty. if you like bands sucks as Remembering Never, Poison The Well, Across Five Aprils, The (old) Eighteen visions, It Dies Today, And Bleeding Throught you will without a doubt love this cd, and look out for Of Love and Lunacy out sometimes around March 2005 on Road Runner Records, Keyboard never sounded so good in Hardcore.
WOW, totally didnt expect something this good..........2004-10-02
My friend played me this cd, told me it was a christian hardcore band. Immediatly i think "dont wanna hear about jesus", and "theyre gonna sound like Zao". They did neither. I couldnt catch any spiritual lyrics, which still were in there, and they managed to not sound like a Zao ripoff. They have a keyboardist who totally adds a new layer of sound to their stuff. Only problem is, its too short. They are releasing an LP sometime next year. Other than that, totally recommended for anyone who like hardcore, emo, or screamo.

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation album.......2005-03-16
The set includes 3 CDs - "Relaxing", "Vocals", and "Epic". The recordings are wonderful versions performed by excellent orchestras/singers. I listen to it on my Paradigm speakers and close my eyes and can feel encompassed by the music. The recordings do not have the flaws (hiss, pops, scratches) in the sound that many 'cheap' classical CDs have. For 3 CDs and the quality of the recordings, I found this album a good choice!

Customer Reviews:
Exquisite, with glimpses of a transcendental beauty.......2003-09-19
I can't believe it. This is the first "Christmas" disc I ever bought and am still regularly listening to ... nine months post-holiday, now!
This collection is replete with sparks of worship and awe. The festive jaunt embarks on a well-executed, majestic baroque piece, slipping into some flitty operatics. The mood shifts from aristocratic regalism to rich, emotive ethnicity in the climactic, folk dance-feel of entries 3 & 4. The transition between the two is gorgeous. {Who compiled this disc? Give that wo/man a raise! I have never heard such juxtapositional mastery on any professional compilation before. Chillout comp "masters", listen and weep!!}
Not only is this CD emotionally satiating with expert arrangement/transitions, it is well-balanced in style: from traditional to experimental, pointed to ethereal, instrumental to acapella ... voices male and female, youthful and mature. The frosty choral majesty of pockets No. 5 and interlude 9 through 13 bestow upon the listener such a sweet uplift into the spirit of praise. This inspirational thrust underlies a generous portion of this disc. For the first time in years I have decided upon a personal "favorite song", and that is #11. The "engagement ring diamond commercial" residue doesn't interfere too much with enjoying the effervescent, Vivaldi-ish No. 15. A few organ pieces are thrown in for good measure (the final, surprising one always evoking a good chuckle).
While there are certainly many standouts I listen to far more regularly than other ballads, this is a solid disc of excellent, well-executed music. My muddled blabbering on here cannot do this CD justice. This is one of the very best CDs in my personal collection. The Hyperion Label should be very proud of this release. If you are seeking a festive potpourri of aural exaltation, the charming incense of Christmas Throughout the Ages will not disappoint.
Incidentally, the track listing on Amazon is currently inaccurate - either that, or they have the wrong title and cover art for their product number here. Yikes! In the interim, go to the Hyperion-Records UK website to see the real list until Amazon rectifies this listing.

Probably of interest to purists & students.......2002-12-05
I sure don't want to imply that this is a poor album. If you like classical music, you'll find much to enrich your soul here. However, when one considers the huge choice of classical Christmas offerings, this one just doesn't strike me as being above average for the genre.
For a larger overview of great classical Christmas music, I think "Christmas Adagios" is much more satisfying. "Christmas With Chanicleer" and "The #1 Christmas Album" are other highly pleasing and comprehensive collections, each with more that is familiar and can be related with.
However, if you have the chance to sample this, do so. But I do advise listening and comparing with other sets before buying.

Customer Reviews:
A Christmas celebration for Classical Music Lovers only.......2002-11-06
The cover of this 2 disc set features half a dozen of the great voices of our time: Pavarotti, Domingo, Joan Sutherland, Renata Tebaldi, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Leontyne Price. However, selections by these soloists comprise only 2/5 of the set, the rest being choral and orchestral works.
Nor are these fabulous voices given equal representation. Pavarotti and my personal favorite, Joan Sutherland, have four songs apiece; Price and Kanawa have three apiece; Renata Tebaldi two and only one for Placido Domingo.
However, this is basically a very good collection. The first disc is a bit on the solemn side, while the second is brighter. Pavarotti leads off the entire collection with "Adeste Fideles" and returns later on the first disc with "Mille Cherubini in Coro". His renditions of "Panis Angelicus" and "Gesu Bambino" help grace the second CD.
Joan Sutherland brightens the first disc with her "Joy To The World" and then sets the lighter mood of the second disc with "Deck The Halls" and later returns with a sprightly "Twelve Days of Christmas". She also gives us the beautiful and tender "Virgin Slumber Song". Leontyne Price gives us Schubert's "Ave Maria", "O Tannenbaum" and "O Holy Night". Kiri Te Kanawa gives us Bach/Gounod's "Ave Maria", surprises us with "White Christmas" (a very beautiful & unique interpretation), and winds up the entire set with "Mary's Boy Child". Renata Tebaldi's contributions are Brahms' "Lullaby" and "Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle". Placido Domingo's sole appearance is with the dynamic "Hosanna in Excelsis" from Lloyd Weber's Requiem.
It is a splendid feast of vocal performances. However, the choral and orchestral selections have weak spots. I was especially disappointed in the Chicago Symphony & Chorus rendition of "For Unto Us a Child Is Born", and also thought that a good rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus would've worked better. The orchestral selections did have bright spots such as "Sleigh Ride" (Mozart's, not Leroy Anderson's), Tchaikovsky's "Waltz of the Snowflakes" from the Nutcracker, and the "Skater's Waltz".
All in all, this is a collection which belongs in your Christmas Classical collection, but can't be considered an absolute essential.
This may be a good album; the marketing ploy is shameless.......2001-11-15
I have not listened specifically to this edition, but I can tell you with near absolute certainty that this is a classic example of marketing at its most shameless. This is nothing more than a reissue of "The Greatest Christmas Show on Earth", but with a different title! (Something similar was done back in 1963, when the Harry Simeone Chorale's ever-popular 1958 LP, "Sing We Now of Christmas", was retitled and re-released as "The Little Drummer Boy"--its current CD title--, but at least the advertising there seemed slightly more honest.)
Everything on "The #1 Christmas Album" is exactly the same as on "The Greatest Christmas Show on Earth", right down to the order of the musical selections on the album. Only the cover design is different. Decca/London apparently believes that it can fool its customers into thinking that they are buying another album if they simply change the title. Of course, the album itself is reasonably good, though not on the level of most of my favorite Christmas albums, not even the now-deleted RCA Victor "Christmas Treasures", a collection culled from RCA Victor's Living Stereo series. The offense lies in the marketing gimmick, something I have never seen in all my years of avid CD buying. This is worse than all those "collections" which just rehash old material--at least each collection is a newly organized album.
Touch of angle, touch of heart.......2001-11-14
If you enjoy opera or choir, this is a must collection. The Choir of King's College probably knows the secret how to make the listener flying among thousands of Christmas candles. Pavarotti's opening is so mighty that remind people, this year, to be courageous and to believe (not limited from religious sense but the humanity perspective.) And his Mill Cherubini and Panis Angelicus can vibrate one's tear from the heart, reflecting to the tragedy and the war in 2001. As for the sopranos, this collection is a Jewel. Joan Sutherland's Deck The Hall and The Twelve Days of Christmas bring out the merry atmosphere of the season and cheer one's mood to celebrate. Also her Virgin's Slumber Song has so much beauty and grace . Kanawa's Ave Maria is so dramatic performed that perfectly drawn out the human's longing for love and protection. All the orchestra also have done a splendid job. The arrangement is perfect there is no dull moment from the beginning to the end.
