decades live was in my opinion the best live albums from the great foghat which i rate as being even better than foghat live or even king biscuit flower hour.this live album was culled from performances during their tours in bakersfield california(1996),new york city(1977),denver colorado(1999) and portland oregon(1996) by the original lineup featuring the great rod price and lonesome dave peverett.this double album has a fantastic collection of songs like SLOW RIDE,FOOL FOR THE CITY,STONE BLUE,SWEET HOME CHICAGO AND two superb 16 minute renditions of I JUST WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO YOU AND CHATEAU LAFFITE 59 BOOGIE.worth the price for the slow ride and fool for the city renditions.a few tracks that i thought should have been included in this compilation are TERRAPLANE BLUES,HOME IN MY HAND,MY BABE and RIDE,RIDE,RIDE.very highly recommended.R.I.P LONESOME DAVE,you are missed by your fans.[...].definately five stars.

The best that live rock can offer.......2003-12-21

This double cd is another example of the sheer power this band had when playing live. All the cuts are excellent and sound great, so crank it up! You just get that feeling of being there at the concert. On disc 1 my favorite is Honey Hush, and I also like that they included the intro. (evolution of Chicago Suite as Rod now calls it on his new cd West Four)for Sweet Home Chicago. Disc 2 has two of my all time favorites Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie, and Eight Days on the Road. Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie (an encore version and almost 15 minutes long) will have you up an dancing. Eight Days on the Road just rocks! Showing here (standard guitar) as with Honey Hush and a few other songs on these cd's, that Rod Price is more than just a great slide guitarist, but can play with anyone on standard guitar. This (double cd) shows he is definitely one of the most versatile lead guitarist in Rock history.

Also the energy is felt with the band and in particular it's leader the late Lonesome Dave (a pretty good guitarist in his own right). I met this man many times, though he seemed to be quiet and in someways shy off stage. On stage the man was a raging tiger. He always gave it all he had to his fans 100%. That also is felt here.

One reviewer mentioned about a dvd like Zep. I have also thought the same. I hope that someday soon it will happen. Another reviewer didn't seem to care much for some cuts or are poor performances. To me they all sound dynamite on my system. And I really don't agree about they should have used material from this pseudo (new line up) Foghat. The "FOG", without Lonesome Dave and Rod Price is like the Stones without Mick and Keith, or The Who without Roger and Pete. Sometimes legends need to be left alone and remembered what it was like when they played together. This I believe is what Decades Live is about.

Great Live Foghat.......2003-12-16

DECADES LIVE combines great live music from several Foghat tours. The music is all top-rate, even though 1977's FOGHAT LIVE remains the definitive live document of this great band. If you love FOOL FOR THE CITY, FOGHAT LIVE, NIGHT SHIFT, ENERGIZED, ROCK AND ROLL OUTLAWS, AKA ROCK AND ROLL, and ROAD CASES, you'll love DECADES LIVE.

An interesting live collection..........2003-12-16

As a long time Foghat fan, I'd intended to give this one a five star review before even listening to it. Heck, I'm thrilled to see the Peverett estate hard at work to shell out some additional goods to the legions of fans out there that'll never have enough Foghat to last a lifetime. Now, after listening to this double CD for almost a week, I'm not so inclined to give it the glowing review I'd hoped to give it. Still, it deserves alot of recognition. So, here's a FOUR AND A HALF star review for DECADES LIVE.

Let's start with the good, and there is plenty of it. One: 2 CD's of previously unheard performances. And you get a great selection of songs, some classics, some classics that have never been released in a live format, some previously unreleased songs, and more! The first CD, and the first two songs on CD 2 is a complete performance from the reunited team of Peverett, Price, Stevens, and Earl. This is another solid set from the band that'd toured tirelessly after the release of their CD RETURN OF THE BOOGIE MEN. It's a solid set of songs, and even includes Honey Hush, which hadn't been released live from the reunited group. Very nice. Good versions of Stone Blue, Sweet Home Chicago, and I Just Want To Make Love To You. Dave seems to be losing his voice at the end of the set during Fool For The City, and Slow Ride, but it's a small distraction to the solid set. Next, we have a few great cuts from various concerts throughout the 70's and 80's, where, in my opinion, Foghat was at their strongest. I Ain't Got You is killer. And then, we have a few cuts from an 80's set that includes a great version of Chateux Lafitte '59 Boogie, and even a cut from Tight Shoes, a real treat for this fan who'd never heard anything live from that album. Maybelline is so fast, it's amazing that Roger Earl was able to keep up, and the bass work of Craig MacGregor is simply jaw-dropping (who, surprisingly, seems to be missing from the photo montage in the liner notes). All in all, a must have collection for fans.

Now, why did I subtract a half star? Well, we have already two separate releases from the reunited band from the same tour: Road Cases (2 versions), and Two Centuries Of Boogie, on DVD. Why release a third set from the same tour, which is nearly identical to the others? This Foghat enthusiast would like to see more classic sets from the 70's and 80's, and I'm sure they're out there. How about a re-issue of Foghat Live with the complete set? Those four songs on Decades Live from the 80's probably came from a complete show. As a purist, I'd rather hear this complete show. And also, what about some sets from the 82' Foghat with Eric Cartwright? I remember MTV airing a show from when they toured with Blue Oyster Cult. Wouldn't mind seeing this again. Or, how about a DVD retrospective, showing concert footage throughout the years, as Zeppelin did. Oh man, wouldn't this be a treat! Well, I can only hope that Decades Live is the beginning of a series of classic concert releases from Dave and the boys. Bring them on!!!

I Love This Band, But............2003-12-14

First of all let me say that I love this band, I have for over thirty years and still do, including its new lineup. They are, without doubt, the best good time rock and roll band ever assembled. However, I will not swoon and give five stars to everything/anything they (the Peverett estate) puts out. Mind you, there is some incredible material here - Honey Hush, It Hurts Me, Too, Louisiana Blues, Eight Days on the Road, I Ain't Got You, and Nothin' But Trouble to name a few. But others, like Chateau Lafitte 59 Boogie, Drivin' Wheel, Fool for the City and I Just Want to Make Love to You are not particularly well done - Dave's vocals are sometimes flat and Rod Price's slide work seems out of sync. A one disc compilation of the nine or ten best songs - the best performances - would have been a better choice. Or, eliminating some of the poorer performances and replacing them with some of the incredible stuff from the new lineup would have made for a better two disc set. I get the feeling that there's some friction between the Peverett family and the new lineup which continues to churn out the best blues boogie, both live and in the studio, on this planet.

Any Foghat fan needs to have this disc, if only for the fact that there are versions of songs never released live before. But, overall, this compilation is NOT that great.

good cd.......2005-08-31

Ahmed jan khansaheb plays beautifully on this album. The one problem I have with this album is the rhythm. Othe rpeople have commented on this, however after carefully listening, you'll hear when Ahmedjan changes his timing from triplets to 16th notes, or others, the serangi player keeps speeing up or slowing down. in fact, There are many noticable spots where you hear the shift in rhythm. This is due in part to crappy serengi player....other part is that Ahmed khansaheb is either 84 or 74 in this recording.

Tabla Maestro of the century.......2005-07-30

This recording is excellent, crisp, and musical although transferred from a 1964 Swiss Audio recording. The ambience of a true "Mehfil" has been created and its a treat lasting over an hour. The best feature is the rich, bass sound of "Bayaan" (usally played with the left hand Tabla or Dagga)of Ustaad Ahmedjaan Thirakwa that would make affcionados teary-eyed! I listen to this recording all the time whenever time permits and would highly recommend it for Tabla learners all over the world.

Star of his time.......2004-11-07

Thirakwa is a venerable name in tabla circles. Very few of his recordings exist simply because of the time in which he actively played. Tabla playing has evolved considerably since his time so it is refreshing to hear a recording from Thirakwa's generation and contrast it with today's artists. Thirakwa was close to 70 years of age at the time of his recording. If you hear this recording, you will be amazed by the fact that a person of that age can play with such amazing clarity and dexterity. Recording quality is somewhat poor simply because of the lack of adequate technology. But one wouldn't buy this CD as much for the quality of the recording as for the quality of Thirakwa's playing and his knowledge. This recording is a compendium of rare compositions - a must have if you love tabla.

Thirakhwa Khan Saheb is the greatest.......2002-04-05

The legend of tabla needs no introduction. I first heard this great man a very long time ago. To me, even if he just plays ""NA"", its enough. There is so much to learn just by listening to his style of presenting a bol. Some of the greatest bols of tabla like ""Dhira Dhira"" and ""Dha tita gida naga dhina naga"" come out so fluently that it amazes me. Even in his nineties, he played so much better than the modern tabla players. As we tabla players say, he had speed and weight. I dont care how old or how weak Thirakwa Khan saheb is. He is to me what pele is to football. The legend. The master. Thirakhwa.

an alternative opinion.......2001-04-26

Some parts reveal awkwardness on the player's part, and the timbre of many of his strokes is not even. This man was not in his prime at the time of the making of this recording, if he was ever great as a technician (he has some famous compositions to his credit). He also had an annoying (to me) habit of playing very powerfully in slow parts, and skimming over rolls. While this may have been something which he would have done with any amount of technical ability, I think that it is likely that this habit stemmed from the coupling of his desire to play forcefully with his inability to combine speed with power. One more feature of the playing on this album which I find annoying is the uneven rhythm. I think that, rather than being what is usually thought of as bad time keeping, this unevenness is the result of emphases. Thirakwa is, to me, somewhat like a pianist who, in the name of "expression", never keeps a beat.

These guys have arrived!.......2001-06-26

I first saw and heard Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan in a small room in Leucadia, CA called The Olde Time Cafe in the early 80's and promptly bought their Who Drank My Beer album (waiting for a CD of this). It was great but this new album is mo' better. These guys are like vintage wine, age has only made them more outstanding. This album is cheap at twice the price. Grab it up, you'll love it!

Less than a year after VH1 Classic debuted "Decades Rock Live!", the network breaks new ground with the first-ever DVD/CD release from the innovative concert series. VH1 Classic Decades Rock Live! Presents Bonnie Raitt and Friends Featuring Norah Jones, Ben Harper, Alison Krauss and Keb'Mo' will be released by Capitol Records on August 15th. Bonnie Raitt and Friends, which was recorded live at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ on September 30, 2005, will feature never-before-seen performance and interview footage, including four duets not included in the VH1 Classic broadcast of the concert. With two hours of concert and interview footage, the concert which was filmed in Hi-Definition and is presented in 5.1 audio, features Raitt performing 17 songs with her longtime band - George Marinelli (guitar), James "Hutch" Hutchinson (bass), Ricky Fataar (drums) and Jon Cleary (keyboards). Included are such classic Raitt hits as "Something To Talk About," "Love Letter" (with Mo'), "You" (with Krauss) and a knock-out encore of "Love Sneakin' Up On You" with Raitt, Jones, Harper, Krauss and Mo' as well as highlights from her latest studio album, Souls Alike, including "I Will Not Be Broken," "God Was In The Water", "I Don't Want Anything To Change" (with Jones) and "Unnecessarily Mercenary" (a duet with keyboardist Cleary, who wrote the song). FRANK GRIMALDI "BALANCE".......2005-02-25

The first thing you pick up when you listen to Frank Grimaldi's new CD, "Balance", is his voice. This native New Yorker has a distinctively baritone voice that's smooth, soulful, rich, hearty, lusty, and full of life. But just because his voice is strong and powerful, it doesn't mean that Frank can't express a vast array of emotions. And it doesn't mean-- as we hear throughout "Balance"-- that Grimaldi can't occasionally sound vulnerable or sensitive; or express a boyish, wide-eyed innocence about life and love. Frank displays the range of his gifted "voix" immediately in the opening tracks, exuding the same passion whether the subject is life in the big city or the more intimate aspects of love and sex. The first track on "Balance", "City Walls", is a high-energy, passionate, loving anthem to the Gay Apple: Although "the G word" is never mentioned, the song perfectly captures the spirit of gay pride and self-acceptance better than so many of the other tracks that we've adopted as gay pride classics: "IÕve learned to relax here, I donÕt question who I am. I love who I chose to love, and no one seems to care; I have many friends here, the most common thread we share; We left our past behind, To find ourselves living somewhere". Track 2, "The Right Thing", uses Grimaldi's voice to perfect effect with a mellow, soft, feverishly romantic track that evokes the funk-and-soul smooth grooves of the '70's (Think Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" or Barry White's "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe"). To put it another way, it's a perfect bedroom song. Other love songs on the CD ("One Night Kiss", "Blueprint") utilize that same romanticism yet experiment with different musical styles.

Aside from Frank's voice and his intensely personal lyrics (more about that later..), the 14 tracks on "Balance" can't be classified into a single genre. Touches of many musical styles exist on the CD. Grimaldi describes his music as "alternative pop", and he counts Bowie, The Beatles, Robert Plant, and U2 as influences. Frank has said, "'Blueprint' is definitely 'alternative', and 'Everywhere I Go' is more 'New-Agey'." "Bad Habits" is described by Frank as "a blues song that I decided to "funk up' a little." He does this courtesy of some musical creative touches and some bold lyrics: "I met him in the menÕs room, He spot me for the blow; He said, 'Bro you owe me interest'; How was I to know? My mind was on over-drive, I could not even think; It had been 3 long days, and I hadnÕt slept a wink... Bad habits, give me false sense of pride; (and) I will be paying for this, until the day I die." While the subject matter is unambiguous, many listeners will may see the streetwise lyrics of "Bad Habits" as open to interpretation for many other vices, including (but not limited to!) hazardous sexual adventures and getting into bad relationships over and over again. "Love Is Not the Same (What Am I Doing In This Bed?)" has a reggae sound, and its catchy, upbeat feel makes it an audience favorite when Grimaldi performs the song live. "Blueprint", which is arguably the most overtly biographical song on the CD, utilizes his background-- a man raised in an Italian-American, female-dominated Brooklyn home-- to create an earnest and moving love song-- a romantic plea for understanding from a potential lover: "Where is the blueprint, that tells me how to live with you? Where is the blueprint, that tells me what to do?" Grimaldi puts his own unique spin on "Paris Is a Lonely Town", a Harold Arlen song which appeared in the animated film "Gay Purr-ee". Although the song is (obviously) about Paris, the loneliness expressed in the lyrics reminded Grimaldi-- and no doubt, many others-- of certain aspects of life in New York, which is why Grimaldi chose to re-work it. The original "Paris Is A Lonely Town" was written in triplets, but Frank changed it to "four time" and injected some unique musical touches. The result is a new interpretation of the song that's less torchy showtune and more a modern urban story about alienation in the big city-- whether it's Gay Gotham or Gay Purr-ee. Grimaldi attributes the music's exceptionally polished sound on "Balance" to Barry Goldstein, credited on the CD with, among other things, "engineering and mixing". "Barry is a perfectionist." states Grimaldi. "We went over everything with a fine-tooth comb." The result is that Frank Grimaldi doesn't waste a single note or lyric on his second CD. On "One Night Kiss" ("We met on holiday, under a moonlit sky over Montreal; I could feel the summer breeze..."), inspired by a real-life encounter ("He was 19, I was 36..." Grimaldi recalls), so vividly re-creates the scenario which Grimaldi sings of, that for a few minutes the listener really feels like they're in Montreal that night too.

It doesn't take long to realize that "Balance" is an intensely biographical CD. "But wait...", you may be saying. "Isn't everything an artist writes 'personal' in some way?" Well, yes...and, no. Too many times, up-and-coming artists will choose to put their music's (1) accessibility to the audience, and (2) "commerical" potential, before their own self-expression. It often takes years of self-discovery and introspection to really write music from the heart. What Frank has done-- no doubt, thanks in part to the experience of being a performer in New York since the '80's-- is create an intensely personal CD. A CD which, I might add, that is instantly accessibly to the listener, and worthy of mass commercial success-- if only so-called mainstream radio stations, shall we say, "had the balls." The message that Frank conveys frequently through his music is that he's too experienced to play the fool, but too young and free-spirited to keep from taking risks-- a theme that is so well-conveyed in Track 11, "Same Mistake". The CD is not always pretty. "Incident on Hicks Street" (I Went Away)" recounts a real-life childhood trauma-- and although Frank uses some trippy special effects to mitigate the impact of the subject matter, the meaning is pretty unambiguous... perhaps suggesting that the goal of "Balance" is Frank Grimaldi's personal catharsis as well as to entertain the listener. Importantly, "Balance" explores the perspective of a guy who came out-- and lived as a NYC gay guy-- in the '80s (Grimaldi will say that he is "one year older than Madonna"!) This is a perspective that, sadly, we don't often hear too much about, at least music-wise. Grimaldi states that the majority of "Balance" was written between 2000 to 2002, and was inspired partially by the events on by September 11th as well and partially by the loss of many of the parental figures in his life. "When the people around you start dying, then you start to think about your own life." A real treat comes with "Faggotry Personified", with rap segments by JGWMC (Jewish Gay White MC) soce the elemental wizard. Frank's bold but mannered style, and soce's infamous in-your-face persona form an interesting contrast for any listener who believes that the gay community should "take back" the F-word (The other F-word...) Yet, although they have different musical styles, these guys are similar in at least one aspect: You won't catch either Frank Grimaldi or soce singing pretty little "coming out" songs or generic, pre-fab pop tunes with ambiguous pronouns. This is gay music with no apologies!
