The Scandanavian music on Northern Nights is difficult to characterize: elements of Celtic, folk, Russian, and New Age all flow together for exotic, stunningly beautiful music. With a selection of songs from such premiere artists as Kirsten Bråten Berg and Hedningarna vocalist Kurki-Suonio, the collection radiates a dark, icy melancholy created from gentle guitar, violin, synth, and voice. Every song carries its own unique ambience, but Hege Rimestad's "Krishna's Cousin" typifies the lovely sound found throughout the album. With fretless bass, aching fiddle, deep drums, and floating vocals, "Cousin" rings softly, reminding one of an Icelandic Loreena McKennitt. In contrast, "Hilddá Luohti" has a touch of Asia in its delicate Yungchen Lhamo-esque vocals and gamelan-like sounds. --Karen Karleski

Good exposure to Nordic Music.......2003-04-19

A lot of people might describe this CD as "mood music" or New Age, which would be enough to send me running in the opposite direction. I prefer to describe it as a good anthology of contemporary Nordic music, reflecting some traditional elements. If you want to relax and bliss out to this CD you should have no problem, but if you enjoy complex, sophisticated music, you also will find this to be a most satisfying CD.

My only quibble is a complete lack of liner notes. However, the CD does provide the various albums that these tracks came from, in case you want to hear more of a particular artist's music. Every track can be found on other CDs.

If you are not familiar with many Nordic artists, then this will be a very useful CD to give you some exposure!

I bought this CD for myself and then I took a long trip to Oslo and Finland and brought it along. We had a birthday party for me in Oslo and it was all guys, just by accident. They were playing this hard-driving electronic music, as guys are prone to do and I said to my sweetie, I can't take it: it's my party, let's put on that Northern Nights CD. So we did and everyone calmed down and started conversing in a civilized manner and they were impressed by this music from their own damn lands and trying to figure out the dialects in the lyrics and so on. What a great experience for me and everyone else, too. The music isn't just traditional; it's modern and beautiful and comes from a place deep in the roots of the landscape and culture

Fantastic compilation of Scandinavian Artists music. Melodic and hypnotic. Very tranquil yet musically involving and very interesting to listen to. Try it!!!

Haunting, mysterious,lovely music from Scandinavia.......1999-07-20

I don't know much about the music of Scandinavia, but it has not stopped me from blissing out to this compilation. One of the most consistently beautiful listening experinces I have had with a disc. Heart breakingly lovely vocal and equally mesmerizing instrumental tracks flow together seamlessly. Treat yourself to this record!

Golden Age.......2002-03-07

With every "new" Deep Purple live release there are criticisms, and this one is no exception. Coming, as it does, from the golden age of the Mk II line-up, this album should have been treated with more reverence than it has been. Originally released in the 80s, the track order was rearranged in order to fit the constraints of the format, and to make sure that tracks were playable in their entirety.(Remember "Wring That Neck" and "Mandrake Root" both clock in around 30 minutes.

But this is the 21st Century. CDs have been around for a while now, and even though there is a section in the sleeve notes which states that the original running order has been restored, the discs themselves give away the fact that Spitfire simply created this package from the rearranged version.

This in itself creates some problems. Track intros appear at the end of the previous track and there is an overall feeling throughout that something is not right. I mean, you hire a new singer, make an album, go on tour and then open your show with a 30 minute instrumental (??????).

But that is the packaging. The music is still great. There seems to be a timelessness about this generation of Deep Purple, and this fan for one can never tire of hearing this stuff. OK so there are now a gazillion versions of "Child In Time" out there, and considering that the live version of "Wring That Neck" was a rarity not too long ago, I can now think of four "official" releases - but we won't talk about the cabaret-style version on the LSO album!! This is the way it was meant to be played, and while it is not the best version (Blackmore is way too low in the mix - unlike the "Concerto" version) it is a track which never ceases to amaze. The chemistry between Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore is apparent here, as it is on most Mk II live releases.

If you take this album in context the music alone would warrant five stars. But in context, this was the beginning to the finale with "Made In Japan". Stack all Mk II live albums together and play them one after the other and you see the progress the band made in three years.

A little more consideration on the packaging and these releases would be classics.

Problems,part 2.......2001-08-12

In 1992 this set was released as 'Live and Rare'. The running order was : Wring that Neck/Speed King/Into The Fire/Paint it Black; Mandrake Root/Child in Time/Black Night. In the liner notes it was indicated that this wasn't the original order at the actual show. This running order was : Speed King/Into The Fire/Child in Time/Wring that Neck; Paint It Black/Mandrake Root/Black Night. On this particular CD this latter running order was printed on the back cover, but the discs themselves were still in the wrong order. And on the front cover 'Scandinavian' is spelled 'Sandinavian', minus it's 'c'. I held off buying this for a while because I had the other version, and I was unsure whether it was actually in the correct order or not. I finally relented and bought this, and, lo and behold, the discs were still wrong.... It's probably a mastering problem, and probably will be corrected for future pressings, but I was disappointed. Even in the liner notes they said 'The running order had to be switched around to get the material onto four sides of an LP and this wasn't corrected for the CD version. We've taken the opportunity to do that now.' Unfortunately, it still wasn't done.

Untitled.......2001-07-06

DP were always more a live band than a studio one. Even though they never failed to sound anything less than spectacular on studio recordings, it is Made in Japan that gave a jump start to rock'n'roll fans buying live albums... Scandinavian nights remarkably features the best side of Deep Purple: their incredible ability to sound very professional, and at the same time to use all their improvisational skills in jamming.

Is anyone having problems eith this disc? I bought it and the tracks aren't in order and Child in Time is missing!

BEst LIve Deep purple from early 70"s.......2001-06-04

Deep Purple has many live albums. I wolud rate this third to In Concert 70/72 and MK 3 final concerts. This album captures Deep Purple in there early live performances. THe sound quality is amazing. Blackmore and Lord really Really play. The best song on the album will have to be Mandrake Root. Its 28 minutes and Blackmore actually plays! There are other long songs such as Child IN time for 20 minutes and Wring that neck for 34 minutes!There are also some rare songs to find live: Into the fire and Paint it Black which is mainly a Long Drum solo. THe other songs are Black Night and Speed KIng both are some of the best versions i ever heard. If you are a fan of Deep Purple LIve and in there early years this is the greatest album in the world to buy. Also look at In concert 70/72 and MK 3 final concerts.

Awesome Live Purple.......2000-09-29

This is a great album! If you are looking for the old Deep Purple stand-bys, look elsewhere. No "Smoke On The Water". No "Hush". No "Woman From Tokyo". You'll just have to settle for minute after minute AFTER MINUTE of some of the most powerful music you could hope to find. "Mandrake Root" is over 25 minutes long and you will love every minute. The version of "Child in Time" on this album is the BEST live version of the song that I have heard.

If you are "sort of" a Deep Purple fan, go elsewhere. But, if you are a true Purple fan, get this CD.

very very good! Gillan sings very scream and the whole band was still in the top form at that time 1970 in Stockholm Sweden,..a must for DP fans,..many new and young rock bands tried to idolized DP until today,..DP is the most Influence Hard rock band,..until today,..

A must have classic!.......1999-09-07

All individuals who love music, must have this album. This heavy rock album cuts no corners on delivering a tune. The fact that this album captures Deep Purple performing live, in the early 70's, only can enhance a listener's respect for the talent of each band member (of which each is showcasted throughout on this double cd). Jazz and classical music lovers, beware, this album epitomizes group chemistry. Don't quote me, but somewhere I remember Frank Zappa having great respect for Deep Purple performances. Listen to the album and I know that you will walk away with a greater sense of admiration too!
