If the album title seems self-assured, it's only truth in labeling. For his last album of the millennium, rock's greatest guitarist teams with an old compatriot (keyboardist Tony Hymas, a staple since 1980's There and Back who coproduces here with Beck) and one of his musical godchildren (Jennifer Battin, longtime tour guitarist for Michael Jackson). The result is a rough musical travelogue of the '80s and '90s that occasionally turns down a dead end. The synth-sequenced backdrops and terse phrasings of "Psycho-Sam," "Blast from the East," and "THX138" recall the fusion reactions on Wired and There and Back (and pose a seemingly heretical notion: did Beck invent techno?). "Space for the Papa" recalls the no-frills structure of Guitar Shop. "Angel (Footsteps)" showcases Beck's unique tone and phrasing, evoking Santo and Johnny swinging on a star, while "Another Place" offers up elegant classicism. "Hip-Notica" proves there's still funk in Beck's blood, even if "Declan" gets mired in New Age overkill. But Beck's shortcomings have traditionally come in framing his incendiary prowess and emotional directness. As a high-profile collaborator once put it, "You fast-forward through that stuff to get to the solos." In that department, Who Else! delivers. The live, unadorned "Brush with the Blues" lets him elevate masterfully subtle riffing into a firestorm of a solo. "Even Odds" (a reunion with Jan Hammer) and "Space" show what a mockery the musician can make of otherwise useful terms such as noise and tonality. If Who Else! occasionally stumbles, it's good to remember what a critic once said of the Marx Brothers: "They never made a film as good as they really were." Beck has made great albums, but few to match his genius as a musician. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Slow down Jeff, you are going to hurt somebody!.......2007-04-22

You should buy this CD for one song. Buy it for the rock like you are going to die tomorrow "Psycho Sam" or possibly the purity of blues itself of "Brush With the Blues" or if you want to hear a guitar sing listen to ""Blast From the East". Looking for another mesmerizing Beck classic, then fast forward to "Angel (Footsteps)and take a marvelous musical journey and lose yourself in its simplistic beauty. Advertisers take note - someone has got to use "Hip-Notica" in a television ad for a background in a commercial. Do yourself a favor and just turn up the sound for "Even Odds"! Jan Hammer plays drums too? Get out of here! "Declan" is one the most beautiful songs Jeff has ever done. If I could only play one song on the guitar, let it be "Another Place". At a mere 1 minute 48 seconds, it is a magical piece of music that would surely please anyone from all walks of life. Overall - this is a must have recording from start to finish. If you are not familiar with the music of Jeff Beck, this is as good a place to start as any. And I can't go without saying "Thanks, Jeff for the bulldog picture".

5 out of 5 stars ....of the Best Electric Guitar albums.......2005-10-30

of all times. Fantastic and tasteful diversity. Jeff Beck takes you on a ride from alternative rock, to blues, to jazz, to new age. And how he makes that strat sound like he is using a dozen effects with his unique style....can ramble on and on.

5 out of 5 stars It takes Jeff Beck to make techno credible .......2005-04-28

With "Who Else", Jeff Beck demonstrates what techno is missing: his guitar playing. Beck is one of music's most innovative, creative, aggressive, incisive, and melodic guitarists. On this CD, Beck's innovative guitar work meshes with various techno beats and effects. On "What Mama Said", "Psycho Sam", "Space For The Poppa", and "Declan", Beck plays with enough heat to vaporize all shredders and Nu-Metalers. Jeff Beck has demonstrated throughout his career that there is nothing that he won't try to play, and almost nothing that he can't play well.

5 out of 5 stars Never looks back.......2004-12-22

While most, if not all, of his contemporaries (I won't call them peers 'cause they aint!) seem to wallow in the old techniques that got them there, El Becko soars above them all by constantly evolving and making music that reflect the times. I was so happy with this album. It was worth the wait. Then he follows with You had it coming and Jeff. Kind of a trilogy of Guitar Terror. And all PHENOMINAL. As an aside I was sitting there watching "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (old movie. If you don't know it...rent or buy it). This album had just come out and while watching the flick one of the characters (Dick Shawn) utters the words "Y'all Hear What Mama Said?!"...yes the same sample used in the song! I nearly fell over. I was lucky enough to meet Jeff Beck back stage during his Austin show shortly thereafter and mentioned that I knew where the sample came from. When he found out I knew...all he wanted to do was talk about the movie. Apparently it is one of his all time faves. What a great Bloke!

5 out of 5 stars Still the man.......2004-04-01

JB is one of my favs, and this recording shows that he still one of the best out there. While his music and style continue to evolve and change, the work continues to be tip top. Definitely underrated in terms of his contributions to guitar playing/innovation. Some of the tracks have a bit of an electonica feel which may not suit some ears... personally I enjoy it. Nevertheless, the music & guitar work is top notch.

      4 out of 5 stars Essential history.......2007-06-24

Hooray for Pavilion Records and all other organizations collecting early recordings and transferring them to CD for the world to enjoy! Of course since they are EARLY recordings (1917-1927) it has that fizzy wax sound to it and the lyrics get mushy at times. That either makes it endearing or annoying, depending on your perspective. It's lovely to finally hear the Brox Sisters sing again, let John Steel's tenor soar, and to hear what You'd Be Surprised sounded like sung by a girl. The earliest songs of Irving Berlin may not be his best, but are a refreshing glimpse into his 30s. Half of the songs on this disc debuted in Berlin's own Music Box Revue at the theater he built after WWI.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

              Album Description

Who Else is a guitar and vocal based album with hints of McCartney, Badfinger and CSNY. The album is guitarist/songwriter driven with wonderful lyrical content and exceptional pop songs. The Barrys have a retro sound that blends male and female harmonies resembling those of the 60's folk/rock/British Invasion bands such as those above adding to that the Buffalo Springfield, Mama and the Papas, Hollies, and of course a strong Beatles influence. Singer/Songwriter Barry Scott's vocal delivery has been compared to such legendary artists as Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney. The bands vocal arrangements and harmonies have strong influences from Wings to Fleetwood Mac to the Beach Boys and Jelly Fish. If you like the bands that have been mentioned in this description you will love this album.

I like "Because She's a Woman". One of my favorite bands of recent times is Jellyfish. Your track doesn't sound like any one particular Jellyfish song, but the production is very similar. Jellyfish was known to use unexpected instrumentation, like harps.

"Everything So Rare" has that "Mother Nature's Son" feel to it. A bit of "Blackbird" also. Very sweet, somewhat sad and just a bit tongue-in-cheek.

"Who Else" is pure CSN, right down to the percussion and the count off.

"Tell Me So" is like a mixture of Bowie, Jellyfish and ELO. The piano part near the 2:30 point reminds me of "Day After Day". The lead guitar starts out sounding a bit like Queen, then morphs into more of an Allman Brothers feel. All and all a terrific track with a lot to offer. I love the vocal swell and the sharp attack just after the first couple of bars.

"All It Took Was You" has a great Byrds feel. The guitar break reminds me of "And Your Bird Can Sing". Coincidence? Hmmmm.

I like the mood you set at the beginning of "Scarecrow".

All in all I am highly impressed. You demonstrate a love for melody and harmony that is almost totally neglected by most newer artists these days.

This CD is a blend of male/female harmonies reminiscent of the 60's sounds of the Beatles, CSNY, the Mamas and the Papas andthe Buffalo Springfield. The band has a very Paul McCartney and Wings sound. If you like the above bands and you like guitar driven, harmony laden music - this CD is a must have.
