Excellent re-mastering of an old favorite!.......2007-05-15
I have the original album, purchased when I was a teen, and the comparison is incredibly fresh and crisp, not to mention the addition of the extra live tracks. This was on my Christmas wish list and I'm so thankful for the gift as every track is a treasure. I highly recommend it.
I'd give up all my junk for a little Grand Funk!.......2007-04-25

The songs on this album were by far their best! Mark Farner has a
wonderful voice, and the band got their messages across to we the
listeners without obscenities or violence. Grand Funk Railroad
was and always will be a band to be remembered!
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD ROCKS OUT CLOSER TO HOME. .......2007-02-28
I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "CLOSER TO HOME"by one of Rock's greatest bands and one of America's favorite sons. I give you Flint, Michigan's own GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. "CLOSER TO HOME" was originally released in 1970 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Capitol Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
By this time, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD was making Rock n' Roll history and was quickly gaining a reputation for being one of the loudest Rock bands in the world considering that the band only consists of three band members. Also by this time, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD would soon be compared to another legendary three-man band, the great CREAM. In reality, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD IS TRULY FOR REAL AND KNOW HOW TO PLAY THEIR ROCK N' ROLL. The band was hot and on fire with their popularity growing non-stop. With everything on a very positive note, it would be the perfect time for GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, or should I say, guitarist Mark Farner, drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher to head back into the recording studio and record their new follow-up album. It would also be on this new follow-up album that GRAND FUNK RAILROAD would record one of their greatest hits ever and one of the greatest Rock anthems in Rock n' Roll history. The song is "I'm Your Captain. With time already flown by, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD would evolve from the studio with a new completed album and hand it in to Capitol Records. The result was the legendary album "CLOSER TO HOME." In my opinion, "CLOSER TO HOME" is a true testament of the creative genius' of three extremely talented individuals and a great tribute to a band that was changing Rock n' Roll forever with a new sound. Without a doubt, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will always be remembered as the band that was truly ahead of their time.
Now its time to review the killer Rock n' Roll on this legendary album. If you want to hear some real Rockers, listen to the songs such as the classic slow Rocker "Sin's A Good Man's Brother," the breathtaking "Aimless Lady," the blistering killer Rocker "Nothing Is The Same," the funkish and soulful "I Don't Have To Sing The Blues," the slow bluesy Rocker "Hooked On Love" and the blistering groundbreaking Rocker "I'm Your Captain."
There are only two slow Rockers on the album and are the songs such as the slow paced turned fast paced Rocker "Mean Mistreater" and the slow/fast Rocker with a good beat "Get It Together." Farner really sets new ground with new riffs and new guitar arrangements and techniques that would forever revolutionize the way the guitar would be played. Brewer would also break new ground as a drummer and would demonstrate how vital perfect timekeeping has to be in order to create the ultimate Rock n' Roll sound. Schacher would also break new ground as a bassist and would demonstrate the importance of getting the perfect sound and beat out of his bass. Combine all three of these elements together and you will have some of the greatest sounding Rock n' Roll ever.
Overall, "CLOSER TO HOME" is one hell of an album that KICKS A*S.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album without a doubt has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will forever always be "the people's band." In reality, the GRAND FUNK RAILROAD legend does not even come close to ending here despite all the tribulations and tragedies that should have killed the band, buried and laid to rest. But it didn't. But most importantly, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD is the story of survival and perseverence. According to the MTV series BEHIND THE MUSIC, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will forever always be remembered in Rock n' Roll history for two historic moments. The first, in 1971, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD became the first Rock band to sell out Shea Stadium quicker than THE BEATLES did in 1965 and even drew a larger audience attendance than THE BEATLES did in 1965. Second, also in 1971, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being THE ONLY BAND TO HAVE EVER BLOWN THE MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN OFF THE STAGE. This rare happening took place in Miami, Florida. GRAND FUNK RAILROAD was chosen to open for the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. The only thing about this is that GRAND FUNK RAILROAD was so hot and on fire that they delivered a blistering set that was so devastating that ZEPPELIN Manager Peter Grant ordered and threatened GRAND FUNK's Manager Terry Knight to get GRAND FUNK RAILROAD off the stage NOW! With the damage already done, LED ZEPPELIN was fearful and even hesitated in following GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. However, LED ZEPPELIN did go on stage and performed but their performance was no where near the blistering performance of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD'S. With all these accomplishments done in such a short period of time, I think it is fair to say that GRAND FUNK RAILROAD has forever left their mark and impact in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten nor denied. With this in mind, there will also be new stories and tales in the GRAND FUNK RAILROAD legend and story that will still need to be conquered, told and written in pages and in new chapter's. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will have to stay tuned and read further about at a later date. So here's to you Mark, Don and Mel. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. GRAND FUNK LIVES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
metallurgy.......2006-10-12
'Closer To Home' is one of the finest heavy rock discs ever produced, plain and simple. While much is made of the title track, the album rocks steady from one end to the other, offering a showcase for the many methods to master (and in this case, remaster) metal music:
METAL GOES STOMPING on the opening track, the incisive 'Sin's a Good Man's Brother' ("but is that right....?"). After lulling the listener with a soft acoustic introduction, the first question you'll be asking is: can three guys really generate this many decibels all by themselves?
METAL GOES JOGGING on track two, 'Aimless Lady', with its heavy, loping strides. The testosterone laced lyrics ("if you can stand a real good man, take my hand and understand me, baby") are supported by fine falsetto backing harmony from drummer Don Brewer.
METAL GETS A FUNK GROOVE on 'Nothing Is the Same', complete with a sweet, fuzzy bridge from singer Mark Farner's lead guitar. The songsmith observes how life has changed from when he was 16, to 18, to "just a little bit older", to "future years" and Nothing Is the Same.
METAL BLEEDS A LITTLE on 'Mean Mistreater', which starts out in slow-blues mode, but quickly builds steam into a blazing bridge before collapsing into the bluesy coda.
METALLIC PSYCHEDELIA emerges on 'Get It Together', which is for the most part an organ-driven instrumental, save the mantra-like coda, "got to get it together", delivered by Farner, Brewer, and several soulful ladies in the background.
METAL GOES STRUTTING on 'I Don't Have To Sing the Blues' which is really two songs, two songs mixed into one. A slick lead guitar riff provides the foundation over fat and fuzzy bass lines from Mel Schacher, supporting wicked lyrics such as, "she's my dinner and my Midnight snack... she sets up and she begs and she even rolls over on her back".
METAL GOES POETIC in the coda, wrapping more great lyrics around the "I don't have to sing the blues no more" chorus.
METAL BENDS AND DISTORTS on 'Hooked On Love', where a heavy bass line propels this song through several incarnations, and featuring a torrid bridge from Farner's wah-pedal guitar.
METAL GOES ANTHEMIC on the title track, my favorite part of which is the rich, fuzzy yet smooth lead guitar bridge... but also the early, all too brief wah-pedal. The liner notes talk extensively about the accidental "Alright, stop it" from producer Terry Knight that appears one minute into the track. Although the author of the liner notes, Steve Roeser, makes it sound like the gaffe is hardly noticable, I've always been aware of it. It seems to fit right in with the "Stop it!, Stop it!" that appears in the 'Hey Jude'-ish finish. But just in case you want to REALLY hear it, check out the hidden track following the bonus tracks where the miscue is isolated and amplified for you!
Bonus tracks are always appreciated, but two more versions of 'Mean Mistreater' (one from a concert in Orlando in June of 1970, which isn't appreciably different from the studio take, and the other IS the studio take, with only slight alterations in the finish), don't add much in the first case, and amount to one too many renditions in the other. However, two other tracks from that night in Orlando will put some flash in your CD laser. The first is a nearly twelve minute excursion on 'In Need' from the bands 1970 self-titled disc, and a seven minute-plus rendition of the classic 'Heartbreaker' from 1969's 'On Time' disc. Add to all this a sparkling remastered sound, period photographs and memorabilia, snazzy graphics, detailed track information, and relevant liner notes, and you have what is known in the business as the complete package. 'Closer To Home' is a milestone in rock history right out of my backyard of Flint, Michigan. The soundtrack of your life is incomplete without it.

Hey
I have been looking for this album for the last 20 years.
Whenever radio stations played the title song i could never
catch the name of the album. Absolutely no regrets. It felt
Like i was a kid again and thanks to Amason i now own a copy.
For classic rock lovers this is a very good addition to any
collection.
hope you enjoy it!

Customer Reviews:
Pretty Heavy-handed stuff here.......2004-03-04
Again, I think altissimo! is going over the top here with the raw patriotism bit. Sure we should be proud of this country, but there does reach a point where it becomes too much and is embarrassing. That point is reached here with this mixed bag of recordings pulled in from over the place, many already released from Altissimo! before and just re-packaged here. If you don't mind patriotism served with a lot of relish then this CD is for you.
Beautiful and inspiring..........2003-11-07
It might not be everyone's cup of tea but One Nation Under God is a beautiful ode to patriotism and the United States of America. There isn't a clunker in the 20 songs on the album, not surprising considering you get things like Nearer My God to Thee, God Bless America or Amazing Grace. A fantastic job by the various military bands who contributed to this effort!
One nation Under God.......2003-10-30
"One Nation Under God" is a great compilation of inspirational patriotic music, superbly performed by truly world-class musicians.
The selection of music was excellent, and very much in keeping with the title and the theme of the album. The opening recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Thompson, underscored by a most respectful and reverent lead-in to "God of Our Fathers", perfectly set the stage for the well-appointed and majestically performed music that followed.
Several pieces evoked solemn contemplation and reverence, leading to others of pride, majesty and tribute, all arranged and played with proper respect and appropriate to the theme "One Nation Under God".
This is a magnificent and timeless album that will hold a prominent spot in my collection, and be often enjoyed.
One Nation Under God.......2003-09-25
This CD is absolutely awesome ! From the opening of God of our Fathers with the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Fred Thompson to the final note of Taps, I could not stop listening. This collection of patriotic and inspirational music is a must for all Americans. As an ex-Navy man and Viet Nam veteran, the strains of The Navy Hymn sent chills up and down my spine. It brought back so many precious memories. This collection of 20 songs is a bargain at any price !
Amazing Collection!! Patriotic Music all on one CD !!!.......2003-09-24
This CD is definately for people who are looking to get some uplifting patriotic music for listening to at home, the office, for parades, barbecues, and ecspecially holidays like the 4th of July. Its got all of America's greatest hits including "The Star Spangled Banner", "Amazing Grace", "America The Beautiful", along with other less well known gems such as "Godspeed", and "Pslam for Band". All of the songs are played excellently by the US Marine, Navy, and Air Force bands. The label that put out this release, Altissimo Records actually specializes in military music, so if you like this check our their other releases. Overall Highly Recommended!!!

Album Description
A beautiful tribute to a great American musician. Folk songs, spirituals, and ballads popularized by Norman Luboff Choir, performed lovingly by some who toured and performed with him for more than a decade.
What a joy this CD is for Jackson and me! It allows us to celebrate Norman's universal influence and to share some of his greatness as musician.
I met Norman at a Choral Associates Workshop, a week-long educational feast introducing the writer behind those fabulous choral arrangements. I auditioned for him, met Jackson, and entered a beautiful world intertwined with impeccable musicianship, personal inspiration, friendship, and deep affection. The circle of musicians with whom I have come into contact since that week in June 1973 continues to nourish my musical soul today. So many of my life's connections were established that week, including meeting Jackson's touring friend, tenor-percussionist and then budding composer Chip Davis. The thread binding us and igniting a strong influence of excellence is Norman Luboff.
Norman's arrangements are exemplary of his genius. His appreciation for folk music is evidenced by his sincere and respectful treatment of each melody. Texts literally come alive with his nuance on important words, sensitive rubato, and expansive harmonizations. He always implored singers to sing folk or popular songs in the vernacular, as they are spoken.
Norman would enjoy the Cantorum's wonderful singing -- their robust voices, their natural sentimentality toward the lyrics, and the depth of their passion. These are the kinds of musicians that Norman engaged: fascinating singers with great voices, differing vocal timbre and energies. The fantastic mix of solo voices comfortable in both the popular and classical worlds contributes to the unique Luboff choral sound.
Almeda Berkey Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum, Conductor

Norman Luboff Remembered.......2007-01-10
A very poor recording, almost amateurish. The voices seem to be adequate but the recording is so poor it is difficult to tell. This recording goes into my "I heard it once and that's enough" pile. The purchase was a mistake.
Please, more Choir, less Instruments!.......2005-06-08
I agree with the first reviewer. At age 56, I heard these guys live, and the arrangements were sublime. The vocals were amazing. Here, the instruments almost drown out the choir! Perhaps the pianist and bass player were relatives of the producer?? I would recommend almost any other Luboff CD over this one, even the ones reproduced with pops and hisses from the LP.
"Colorado Trail" is OK. "Shenandoah", one of the Choir's signature songs, is totally messed up.
Very disappointing, I'm sorry.
"A" FOR EFFORT.......2004-06-28
As a Norman Luboff Choir fan, I was extremely pleased to hear that a modern high fidelity remake was available of some of Mr. Luboff's works. Thank you to Mr. Berkey for resurrecting Mr. Luboff. I hope more discs are in the works or planned without the following shortcoming.
Unfortunately, the disc was disappointing because of what may appear to some to be a silly reason but not to me. The recording engineer probably did everything right except establish the presence of the choir relative to the instruments. Listen to a Norman Luboff Choir vinyl album or re-release on CD to hear what I mean.
In the original records, the choir is acoustically featured while in this CD, it's just another choir with equal emphasis placed on the orchestra. I hope that in future releases if any, the producer demands the same emphasis be placed on the choir voices as was originally applied in the recordings. After all, it is the Norman Luboff Choir voices I want to hear.
Norman.......2003-05-16
...I want to thank Almeda and Jackson Berkey for helping to keep Norman's legacy alive and Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum is wonderful.
The choir is superb.......2003-03-20
This CD is a Nebraska product, and a fine one it is! The director of the choir, Almeda Berkey, has combined with her husband, composer and professional pianist, Jackson, to produce this nostalgic look at the wonderful arrangements of their former mentor and employer, Norman Luboff. The liner notes in the accompanying booklet tell of the surprising association of Omaha's Chip Davis as a singer in the Luboff choir, along with Almeda. The choir is superb, well balanced, displaying beautiful voices and a thoroughly professional sound equal to that any of the Luboff choirs on the twelve LPs this author owns...Good variety in programming is a plus, as folk songs, pop songs, folk hymns and spirituals are all presented. Congratulations to the Berkeys, Recording Engineer Clete Baker and all involved on a first-rate recording!"

Many young players think that it's hip to include retro-soul elements like Hammond B-3 organ, Wurlitzer keyboards, and wah-wah guitars into their smooth jazz mix. The five studio-musician members of Jango, however, came of age as players in the 1970s and revel in living completely in the past, unabashedly centering whole tunes (both vocal and instrumental) on the styles of Ace, Tom Scott, and Steely Dan. Their 1999 debut, Dreamtown, was a bit too focused on copying the Becker-Fagen style, and while Steve Nieves's voice and the crafty lyrics of oddball tunes like "The Beard" and "Pink Flamingos" on Closer to Home are still in that vein, Jango interjects lots of L.A. Express-type instrumentals and gentle ballads that offer greater depth. A decent vocalist, Nieves shines brighter fronting on sax. Caressed by a rising brass section on "Soul Casserole," his jumpy alto leaps and dives around a crunching of wah-wah and rhythm guitars (care of Nick Kirgo) and a swirling Fender Rhodes harmony by Steve LeGassick. The swinging funk tune "Diamond Drive" finds multiple textures of Nieves's horn and LeGassick's Rhodes creating a powerful duality, while Kirgo snaps along underneath. The band's exciting synergy is best summarized by "The Score--Part 2," a jam that blends horn accents, a simmering sax line, and brooding organ textured with a Rhodes harmony. "Kool Down EZ" offers a peek into what Jango would sound like without the constant '70s mindset. But then, without that, a lot of the charm is lost. --Jonathan Widran

One Of The Better Pop/smooth Jazz CD`s.......2000-09-13
As a youth I don`t know if singer Steve Nieves listened to allot of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of Steely Dan, but whether he did or not Jango could be mistaken for the same, especially tracks 2,4, 11 and 5. (although LeGassick and Price wrote most of the songs) But saying that is definitely a compliment for we must admit Fagen did and has put some fine music out over the airwaves over the years. The rest of the tracks are in the light jazz vein (sax upfront with stimulating rhythms) and are well written and produced. Track 8 could very well be Kenny G, while #12 could be mistaken on first hear for Steve Cole. All n` all a Cd that won`t end up with the " don`t play anymore" pile.
Another Excellent Release.......2000-07-14
I'd just gotten the first Jango release, Dreamtown, about four weeks ago and it hasn't really left my CD player since. Jango is an LA band of obviously highly talented musicians with heavy nods towards Steely Dan (both lyrically and stylistically) and Toto (check out "Message to Ramona" from the first CD). The new CD, Closer To Home, is (thankfully) more of the same. It includes two tracks, "Soul Casserole" and "Nightside Express" which display a funkier side of the band that wasn't that evident on the first release, very tasty. This is the type of music that can serve both as a "background" to a fine meal and Merlot, or turn the lights down and listen to directly. It's also beautifully recorded, and I predict it'll be a "demo" CD for high-end audio salons. Highly Recommended!

This is the first album I heard from Pine. It brought me from the reggae to the jazz, then on to the spiritual in the album: "To the Eyes of the Creators." Closer to Home is the most uplifting of his albums. Courtney Pine is definite one best and most diversed, ever. The "key" is his spirit.

Customer Reviews:
Grand Funk at their best.......2004-09-07
"Closer to Home", a 3rd album of this hard-rocking power trio from Michigan, marked a welcome change in their sound. I felt, its predecessor, known as The Red album, tried to be somewhat "progressive", while the band clearly had little idea of how to proper develop a long composition. This album shows Grand Funk doing what they do best, play loud and heavy straight in-your-face hard-rock with a strong blues-rock influence. Most of the songs are about 5 minutes or shorter, and the band keeps them dynamic and interesting. As usual, Mel Schacher's bass is superb, and Mark Farner's singing is top-notch, showing some traces of soul-music. The band shows its all during the 45 minutes of this recording. They play both loud and mellow, Farner provides good riffing and inserts some special guitar licks, drummer Don Brewer sings along with Mark or they exchange vocal lines on "Hooked on Love", while "Get It Together" features a female chorus backing vocals. Often the band turns solo parts into almost uncontrolled energetic studio jam, which sounds very good.
I'm glad that Mark, Don and Mel realized their strengths, stopped trying to write long developing compositions (they couldn't do it properly anyway), and instead put out strong hard rock songs, varying from the famous ballad "Mean Mistreater" to a faster "Nothing is the Same". This album is great to listen to. The only gripe I have concerns the closing 2 songs which both feature a 2-minute fade-out chorus repeat, which, to my mind, adds no value and could very well be cut out to maintain the dynamics.
Obviously, if you need only one CD by Grand Funk Railroad, this is the one.
Grand funks best album.......2004-08-12
This album has the classic closer to home. This was their first album of original material when they became a trio. I liked this album because their music style was unique and true to themselves. They were not trying to be commercial, they just played their music the way they wanted to.
Their other non-commercial writing style album was e pluribus funk.
Their latter albums were produced too highly with the influence of being commercial because that is how they made their living after their legal battle with their first producer. So to alleviate as much unsurety as they could, they hired commercial successful producers.
This album is probably the best representation of what kind of music grand funk railroad is about.
One Great Album.......2002-03-11
The Grand Funk Railroad was a band that constantly reinvented themselves, almost with each album. At the beginning there were considered a Heavy Metal band (White Noise) of course even that part of there career has been reclassified as classic hard rock because of what Metal music has advanced too but it cannot be said that GFR is at least not a grandfather of Heavy Metal. GFR's first two albums On Time and Grand Funk (what we GFR Fanatics call The Red Album) were extremely heavy and somewhat simplistic (also GREAT). So when Closer To Home Came out it singled a change. Now this "heavy Metal Band" is showing the ability to change and showing versatility and more sophisticated lyrics. Closer to home is more of a blues based album there GFRs pervious efforts and It also contains GFR magus Opus (Best song) in my opinion I'm Your Captain Closer To Home. Its wonderful song and singer Songwriter Mark Farner said it came to him in a dream and that he believe God gave him this song to be meaningful to people. It has been meaningful to me for over 20 years now and to millions of others as well. The song is just a beautiful blend of melodic Guitar chords (Mark Farner) a great lead bass line (Mel Schacher) and wonderful drumming along (Don Brewer) with great lead vocals by Mark and wonderful Harmonies between Mark and Don, take all that and include a great orchestra blended and you have an all time rock classic. Closer to Home is worth the price just for I'm Your Captain Closer To Home alone, but that is not all. This album is great from start to finish. Sin's a Good Man's Brother is a hard rocker with an infectious groove. Aimless Lady a cool Bluesy rocker. Nothing is the same showed more sophistication in lyric writing for the young band and it rocks as well. Mean Mistreater and is slow down for the band a bluesy song crying out for lost love. Get it together is a fun (mostly) instrumental a nice grove provided by the rhythm section and some nice guitar chops at the end. Hooked On Love has that Gospel feel that influences much rock n roll from the 60s and early 70s, a typical we got to have Love song and a very good one. And Finally I'm Your Captian/Closer to home which is GFRs magus opus as I said previously. IYC/CTH is one of rock n rolls classic songs and its simply a beautiful songs. Coming form GFR such a heavy band at the time it was a big surprise. This album shows GFR still with gritty power but also shows striking maturity for the three young man, Mel, Don and Mark. This is one of Rock N Roll's classic hard rock album by one of Classic Rock's best bands. I would recommend this album to any hard rock/rock fan and any metal fan who wants to see the beginnings of modern hard rock and metal.
