Amazon.com essential recording

Including both his band work (with the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie, and Derek and the Dominos) and his long, varied solo career, this four-CD set does a spectacular job in gathering several decades' worth of Clapton's best. There are the requisite classics--"Layla," "Blues Power," "After Midnight," "Further On Up the Road," "Crossroads," and "I Shot the Sheriff," among many others--some of them in previously unreleased live or alternate studio recordings. Released in 1988, when only superstars were granted the box set, Crossroads became the blueprint for what such a retrospective should be. For its scope, this box skims the cream of Clapton's large output. --Daniel Durchholz

4 out of 5 stars Crossroads.......2007-07-18

Great album. My boyfriend loved it as a birthday gift. Haha, he plays it all the time now. :)

4 out of 5 stars Very good but not career spanning.......2007-07-14

This is an excellent boxed set to get, especially if you can find at a reasonable price.

However Clapton has done such a lot of good stuff since 1988, that it now represents only about half his career. So theres nothing from Unplugged, From The Cradle, 24 Nights, Me and Mr Johnson, Riding With The King etc etc. Its also worth baring in mind that Claptons 80's stuff was frequently over-produced and his choice of material was veto'd (the album August being a good example) by the record company. If in doubt have a listen to the samples on disc 4.

That said its still a great collection:
The Yardbirds, John Mayalls Blues Breakers, Cream, unreleased Cream at the BBC, unreleased Derek and the Dominos, previously unreleased live solo recordings. This gives you 73 tracks on 4 cd's. The unreleased Derek and the Dominos stuff is superb. Apparently not only is it unreleased its also unfinished. Well I'll tell you if thats how unfinished sounds, there are a lot of record companies out there who have no idea how to produce records, because these tracks sound fantastic.

The box is LP size (thats 30cm square for the younger generation) and the booklet that comes with the box is informative and well written. The artwork for the cover is by Ronnie Wood.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific overview up to 1988 of Slowhand's career.......2007-03-17

Although this set doesn't go past 1988 (the year it was released),"Crossroads" includes some of Clapton's best material with the various bands he was a member of (The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos) and solo. While some of these previously unreleased and rare tracks have since shown up on some other reissues, this is the only place (to date) to find early versions of "Tell the Truth", "Roll It Over" (both produced by Phil Spector and one track featuring George Harrison & Dave Mason on guitar. These were produced during the "All Things Must Pass" sessions)and the tracks from the unfinished second Dominos album.

The sound quality on this set is quite good. The masters aren't as compressed (if at all) compared to the reissues of Clapton's back catalog. As a result the CD doesn't sound quite as "loud" (much of that volume on the remasters is due to the dynamic range being squashed and the masters EQ'd taking much of the musical "punch" out of the music) as the Clapton remasters. Detail is very good on most of these tracks and although with some restoration on the Yardbirds tracks at the beginning because of the fragile nature of the masters they were pulled from. Overall, Bill Levenson and his team did a terrific job here.

This is a terrific set with a nice mix of live material, songs that Clapton performed on ("Comin' Home") and recorded as a solo artist. While his guitar didn't blaze quite as hard on the studio recordings for many ofhis solo recordings, this was a phase in Clapton's development where he was developing and focusing on his singing as much (if not more)than focusing on his guitar playing. That's not to say that he doesn't play well, it just sounds different than his hot, crazed playing for Cream and the tortured blues solos as a member of Derek and the Dominos.

The booklet has notes by Rolling Stone writer Anthony DeCurtis (interesting note--Clapton was so devasted by a critical Rolling Stone article about Cream that it helped convince him to break up the band. The article was completely out of line but managed to push Clapton into something that would have happened eventually given the volatile nature of the egos in Cream). Although this remaster is nearly 20 years old, it still sounds extremely good. Unlike many remasters, this was remastered pretty flat without all the compression and goosing that many remasters feature that make things louder but worsen the sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing to complain about here.......2006-05-16

I am a casual Clapton fan; more fond of his adventures into Blues than his more popular material, but I'd be hard pressed to complain about this one. Spanning his career from The Yardbirds to his 80's solo material, there is definitely something here for everyone and it's easy to appreciate the legend that Clapton has become when you look at the scope and breadth of his work. Box sets are a nice way to get a true picture of an artist and one with as many side projects as Clapton it becomes a neccessity if you want to get a true picture of the man's talent.
A worthy collection of his material for any fan of rock.

5 out of 5 stars EC's box of goodies.......2006-02-21

Wonderful set. A must own for any Eric Clapton fan (old or new). Covers most of his career up until 1987 including stints with the Yardbirds, John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delany and Bonnie, Derek and The Dominos plus his solo gems. 'The Core' (from Slowhand) is not included for some strange reason but perfection in compilations is seldom accomplished anyway. 5 stars nonetheless.

3 out of 5 stars big clapton fan.......2007-02-03

Clapton is one of the best guitar players. This has allot of extended versions of his hits and for a Clapton fan I do not see how you could not get this. A big problem for me that gets worse every time I listen ( I was hoping I could eventual ignore it and just listen to Clapton) is the rhythm section. This has got to be the worse drumming ever put on record, and it is mastered in a way that it is impossible to ignore. It's like water torture. (Also the price is 60 dollars?)

5 out of 5 stars Eric's Best Band.......2006-03-03

Being a long time Clapton fan, I can say with subjective certainty that the Tusla backup band, as heard on this retrospective, was the best that ever stood behind the man. In many cases, he stands in the background while the rhythym section just cooks- "Little Wing" and "Badge" serving as notable examples. Terry is superb both as a rhythym and lead guitarist...never again, not with Albert Lee, not even with Mark Knopfler, would the interplay be THIS smooth, THIS breathtaking, THIS raw. Oldaker is reminiscent of Levon Helm or Gene Parsons, and leads that band charging through numbers with his perfect touch. Dick Sims, on organ, sounds incredible, with his playing hovering between the background and foreground, much like Clarence White's guitar playing in the Byrds. It's there, and it's perfect in every case. Same for Radle- by this time, Radle had been Eric's longest standing bassist and knew Clapton's habbits. Listen to how spotlessly he counters them. And Elliman and Levy provide perfect harmony.
In sum, Eric's best band and Eric's rawest and BEST playing. Never again would he reach these heights. Ever.

4 out of 5 stars If you really love EC.......2005-07-10

This collection shows Eric at his best and his worst. These were days fueled by a lot of alcohol...and on some songs it shows. But for the most part this is a great collection of some of his live work in that era. Some of the jams are wonderful, "Badge" and "Eyesight." He's simply magic with the guitar. However, some, like "Crossroads," sound like he doesn't know which of the twelve blues bars he's supposed to be singing in (that was an unintentional pun.) Juxtapose this with "24 Nights" - this collection is a gritty, loose sound, while the latter is more of a clean, polished performance (that was an intentional pun). I love EC and hope he continues to release his live vault...no matter which of his phases it come from.

5 out of 5 stars Eric at his best.......2005-06-22

Someone once told me that Eric is best listened to live and this set proves the point!
Of course there are a few dodgy tracks and yes, I agree, there should have been other tracks added and others omitted.
But!
This is the master at his best, it doesn't get any better than this.
Favourite tracks, too hard to say which are my favourites but there is some wonderful guitar playing on all tracks.
I have been an Eric fan since the Yardbirds and this CD set takes pride of place in my collection

4 out of 5 stars Clapton's 1974-75 comeback.......2005-08-10

I stumbled upon this box set after seeking out 461 Ocean Boulevard on cd. I had been listening to it on an lp and decided to get the more portable and car friendly format. That's when I had to decide if getting the 30th anniversary edition (only available version at the time) and paying nearly 30 dollars for outtakes and all the bonus material was worth it. That's when I saw this. One live and two studio albums from 1974 and 1975 during Clapton's comeback. Four years before Layla and assorted love songs, was released in 1970. The three albums flow well together and can be listened to in sequence. 461 and There's One in Every Crowd sound much like the same album. 461 went gold but There's one failed to crack the top ten. 461 has better arranged songs, and more than likely There's one was compiled of songs that were not put on 461.

461 really doesn't need many points to explain why it is so good. Basically it is Eric fusing reggae with his own style. "I Shot the Sheriff" is on this album, but not all the songs have reggae influences, but they are easy to notice. "Motherless Children" blows open the album, in my opinion this is one of the best stompers Clapton ever did. This is a very pop orieneted album, "Let it grow" is the longest song on the album clocking in at exactly 5 minutes. All around one of the best solo albums Eric did.

There's one in every crowd is a tough fight to call. Like I mentioned earlier 461 is more than likely a collection all the hits that Clapton wrote after 4 years out of the studio. But it isn't a complete throw away like some people say. The album starts with two gospel numbers, the latter "Swing low, sweet chariot" sounds like a song straight from a Bob Marley album without Marley's vocals. "Don't Blame Me" might as well be Eric playing in a Wailer's cover band complete with the background singers and an organ. But it is still a good album.

E.C. was here. This album proves that even though two of his studio albums in '74 and '75 had reggae leanings Clapton could still play the blues. "Have you ever loved a woman" opens this album spotlighting classic Clapton from days gone by. But the part of this album that stands out are the two Blind Faith songs "Presence of the Lord" and "Can't Find My Way Home." Most songs are played very tightly by the band with Clapton still able to stretch out in parts.

Over all it's a nice collection, when I wrote this review the set figured to be about 8 dollars a cd. However, some liner notes and new photos would have been nice. Instead you just get the album cover booklet placed in a long box. But hey thats three jewel cases I won't ever have to replace. This makes the set a solid 3 1/2 stars, but a shakey 4.

Also I noticed the sequence is different from my lp of 461. Mine has "Better Make Is Through Today" as track 2. While the cd replaces it with a song called "Give Me Strength" and Better Make it is track 7 on There's always one. I'm not sure what the story behind this is.

4 out of 5 stars This album kicks!!!!.......1999-05-16

I think Eric clapton is one of rocks most accomplished musicians he has been around longer than anyone and made dozens of albums no band today could put a dent in his repitition

1 out of 5 stars Avoid At All Costs!.......1998-12-03

This "box set" is nothing but sheer garbage! Clapton & Yardbirds tracks with MODERN studio overdubs. For example, the "I Ain't Got You" reprise is the very same "I Ain't Got You", but with drum machine overdubs.

I heard this box set at a friend's and you should get this only if you are REALLY desperate to have everything associate with Eric Clapton. Think of the Jimi Hendrix posthumous albums in the 70s, but with 90s overdubs instead. Heck, even listening to August or Pilgrim is more tolerable than this, and the clowns who assembled this package should be serving time for fraud!

1 out of 5 stars deceptive packaging, questionable Clapton content........1998-11-04

I was given this 3CD set as a gift and at first was very jazzed but that quickly faded. For the listener who might not know much about Eric's early years would have assumed that Eric is on all of the tracks in the 3CD set, but this is not TRUE ! Yes there are some great track in this set, the Sonny Boy Williams live tracks, but I also feel that someone has dubbed in keyboards and maybe a drum machine on some tracks. If you want to discover Eric's recordings with the Yardbirds to Cream then look up releases under those bands. And remeber that Eric's time with the Yardbirds was very short. Most releases of the Yardbirds have Jeff Beck and/or Jimmy Page on guitar. And if you want to really learn about Eric's recording history check out a book by Marc Roberty, The Complete Guide to the Music of Eric Clapton, ISBN: 0711943052. Hey you might like what you hear on this but for the hardcore Clapton fan you can find much better options....

5 out of 5 stars Eric Clapton is one great artist........1998-10-05

Through the years i have been listening to eric clapton, there have been so many great songs, songs that i have never stopped listening to, such as cocaine, lay-la, tears in heaven, pretending, and more. it was a very sad thing to hear of his son, my heart reaches out to him even now a few years after the tragic event.

A collection of several albums - no new or previously unreleased. Although a cool package, any Clapton fan would already have these tracks in thier collection. Nice box, albeit a bit pricey except for the most dedicated Eric Clapton fan.

3 out of 5 stars For the hardcore fans only.......2006-04-04

More like a 2.5 star review, but I guess the glass is always half full with me...

There's a lot of rather obscure recordings here. Some of these songs are pretty good, but generally this is for hardcore Clapton/Page/Beck/Yardbirds fans only. Definetly not the place to start if you're new to any of these great guitarists. Somebody mentioned the sound quality sounds like they were taped off somebody's LP collection. Frankly, its worse than that. They sound almost as bad as ipods! lol

2 out of 5 stars Great Guitarists - Bad Songs.......1999-11-06

This is a 3 CD set of REALLY obscure songs by three guitar legends. This is apparently a collection of songs they did VERY early in their careers. The sound quality is horrible. It sounds like some guy recorded these off of his old LPs.

    Product Description

John Williams, the world's most renowned classical guitarist, has never been content to work within the bounds of Western classical music. The Magic Box is classic Williams, but this time around his muse is altogether different: The album is a paean to the music of Africa, a gorgeous collection of pieces by present-day composers -- Williams among them -- that draw on the rhythms and melodies of the continent's diverse musical cultures. There are dance styles from Cameroon and Zimbabwe, folk songs from Mali and Senegal, and rhythms from the Cape Verde Islands and Madagascar, among other sources. This collaborative effort includes musicians Paul Claris, John Etheridge, Richard Marvey, Chris Laurence and Special Guest Francis Bebey. Contents: 1) O Bia 2) Township Kwela 3) Maki 4) Engome 5) Malinke Guitars 6) Masanga 7) Musha Musiki 8) Mitopa 9) Triangular Situations 10) Guitar Makossa 11) The Magic Box 12) Omby 13) Nikosi Sikelel'i Afrika 14) Djandjon 15) Sangara

1 out of 5 stars the total pack.......2004-01-07

It is wery old numbers and the sound is bad. It is not fair against custumers to say, that the pack is from 1999.

    I am wery disapointed.

    Regards Anders

4 out of 5 stars Another truncated compilation.......2001-06-19

Although this collection of early Clapton/Page/Beck can still be considered important, it is (like a similar collection on the market, "White Boy Blues" v.1) incomplete. Where "WBB" is missing three Clapton tracks ("West Coast Idea", "Choker", and "Tribute to Elmore"), this collection is missing Beck's "Steelin'" and "Chuckles". Recommendation: get both CDs, or find the out-of-print "White Boy Blues" released in the early 1990s.

1 out of 5 stars Confused mish-mosh of three great players.......2001-03-11

The repetition of the tracks between discs and the awful sound quality makes this boxed set definitely one to avoid. I had been looking forward to hearing this trio collection but when played, the acoustics and background accompanists were terrible. It was Yardbirds all over again. If I were able, I'd give this set zero stars.

2 out of 5 stars Be wary of this "box set"!.......1999-11-02

This collection has one CD each for Clapton, Beck and Page. The Clapton one has the songs he did with Page which is great to hear, but the Beck songs are mostly Yardbirds tracks and instrumentals-I'm not sure where those songs came from. The Jimmy Page disc is basically worthless-some second rate R & B singer with a studio band that apparently Page is playing with. But you sure can't tell who is playing guitar. Some of the tracks are repeated on the different discs so there is no telling who is really is on the track! And, of course, there is absolutely zero information about the tracks listed!
