The band that proclaimed itself "The Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World" has long since represented rock's most overarching confluence of art and commerce--with a distinct emphasis on the latter in recent decades--a notion this 40-track, five-decade-spanning anthology can't completely escape. While this is the first anthology to gather hits from the band's entire career, it's the early tunes that highlight one of the Stones' central ironies: virtually their entire "bad boy" reputation was built working for The Man. That original '60s musical arc bounded from '50s rock and R&B revivalism ("Not Fade Away," "The Last Time") to anti-Mop Top aggression ("Satisfaction," "Get Off My Cloud," "19th Nervous Breakdown") to proto-goth cynicism ("Paint It Black," "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby") and psychedelic minstrelsy ("She's a Rainbow," "Ruby Tuesday") to the epitome of blues-based cock rock ("Street Fighting Man," "Jumpin' Jack Flash") in quick succession. Wresting control of their own destinies--and future copyrights--at the end of the '60s, they'd spend the next 30 years largely recycling their earlier incarnation ad infinitum--their music sprinkled with occasionally successful forays into contemporary club and disco fodder ("Some Girls," "Shattered")--and resting on their well-paid laurels. Unfortunately, the listless quartet of new tracks that flesh out this collection seems little more than another business deal to hype their 2002-03 world tour, with "Don't Stop" arguably the weakest in a long string of post-'80s Stones McSingles. If Jagger seems typically detached here, Keith Richards injects some welcome, craggy warmth into the closing barroom lament, "Losing My Touch." But it's also a performance that suggests his legendary band has become little more to him than "The Greatest Day Job in the World." --Jerry McCulley --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

3 out of 5 stars Stong album of music but compromised ethically and aesthetically.......2007-07-17

I enjoy this mix and it makes for a great way to get remastered sound on career highlights spanning the decades without me having to re-purchase all the CDs.

For those complaining about the inclusion of latter-day songs or the exclusion of deeper tracks, please spare me with your self-righteous declarations of purity. Clearly, the intention here is to provide a 40-year-career retrospective that caters to the common denominator among devoted and casual fans of all generations. In this sense, this compact album of songs makes a strong statement of the band's accomplishments and sounds over four decades. Devoted followers of the band can choose (and probably already have chosen) from numerous other albums/compilations that serve other purposes.

For me, however, I have serious reservations about the ethical and aesthetic compromises made in compiling this album. First, listeners should be warned of the tracks that are newly edited versions of the originally-released versions. I cannot believe how much shorter some of these are. "Miss You" is over one minute shorter than the original studio release. "Mixed Emotions" is over 1/2 minute shorter! To not offer a brief disclaimer somewhere on the exterior of the package is an ethical assault on the consumer. Altering the originals for convenience of packaging is an aesthetic compromise I'm unwilling to endorse.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Always Get What You Want- But You Get What You Need.......2007-07-17

I have to admit that building my summer sand castle was quite some chore. Chore at the shore if you will. Little did I know that when I picked this spot it was next to a beach mime colony. You got that right. They walk around and imagine stepping on seashells and use imaginary fishing poles to catch - you got it - nothing! My life has turned into an Antonioni nightmare. But, the good thing is that at least it's quiet and peaceful here at night.
Anyway, I am here to review the Stones 2 disc set called "Forty Licks" which is supposed to represent their forty years as a rock band. I don't think I could add any new insight into their music that you don't already know. Do remember though that they started out as a rythmn and blues group which grew more and more into the rock genre.
This is a good representative set of many of their mega-hits and best known songs. For the most part I think it is a satifactoy cross section of all their years. Although, I do have an issue of what was not included. I think "Tell Me" from their early years could certainly have been included. As well as "Rock and a Hard Place" from the Steel Wheels album. Should I also include "Monkey Man" from the Let It Bleed album? Well, we could go on and on et cetera et cetera of all the songs that weren't included. And, thinking it over, this could easily have been a 3 disc set and still not touch on all there is. My advice is, that if you really want the complete Stones, then get all their offerings. There are a few clunkers out there-but most of the albums are superb and probably show the band through many periods of their existence. They also have produced many, many live albums. Probably the very best would be Get Your Ya-Yas Out followed by Stripped. But, again, that is only my opinion.
Still, I think the material here is the most concise collection since the marriage of their record companys. Certainly it beats Hot Rocks by a mile. I understand what they were doing here - trying to give us a cross section of all their years. However, that said, I think their classic older tunes beat out the newer ones - but that is me just being picky.
I also think that many out there probably have a nonchalant opinion of them. "Oh, it's just the Stones again- God are they old"! You all know the drill. They have been around so long that it's easy for some to become complacent and not find anything they do to be of any consequence anymore. But this set, I think, will set those self-appointed pundits straight.
First off, they certainly have proven that they deserve the mantle of being mega-talents. You just have to listen to all they have done and marvel at the creativity and talent they possess. Alot of this is because of the Jagger-Richards collaboration. Keith is master of the groove and hook, meanwhile Jagger's lyrics are probably some of the best I've ever heard. The combination is lethal and, I believe, gave Lennon-McCartney a run for their money for many, many years. But, looking back, you would have thought that, at the beginning, the Stones would have burned out while the Beatles would have survived. Reality, though, has dealt us a strange twist of fate by proving the opposite is true. The fact that they are still at it, producing rock music of quality, is testimony to how great they really are.
I have seen these guys in concert many times. Really, I think that their shows were some of the best I've ever seen. I still can't get over Jagger ripping his scarf off and whipping the stage and throwing rose petals at the audience during "Midnight Rambler". And those huge blow-up women on the sides of the stage during "Honkey Tonk Women". They know how to do a show- that is for sure.
In closing, this 2 disc set is definitely worth owning, even if you have most of their material already. Why? Most of the great ones are here- in one package. And, although they have had many compilations (maybe too many?) in the past-most of the good stuff is right here. I believe that they are the world's greatest "Rock and Roll Band". Certainly there are others that are great. But, none of them have yet to reach the longevity. I say, keep rockin' guys. You really have nothing more to prove at this point. My only assumption is that you do it because you love the music. I love it too. And many others as well.
Now I must get back to my beach obligations. The mimes are imitating a Rolling Stones concert tonight. And, wouldn't you know? I have to provide the music!

Here comes my 19th Nervous Breakdown---your "shattered" Metamorpho

5 out of 5 stars Just amazing that one band could have this many hits.......2007-06-10

These guys must have sold their souls to the devil because there is no other way one band could strike gold so many times. You can simply put this CD into your player and be entertained for hours. The only reason to skip a song is because you want to hear one great song before you hear the other great song.

Great band. Great album. Nothing else to be said.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rolling Stones!!!! All their best stuff!!.......2007-04-08

A must have for any Stone's fans-even if your not. It has like 40 of their best well known songs, mostly their classics I believe. And a few new one's, like "love is strong". I highly reccommend this CD, you get to own a piece of the LEGENDS!!

4 out of 5 stars Deja vu all over again.......2007-01-19

On the one hand, this is a nice compilation of the Rolling Stones' greatest hits from the early 1960s to the early 21st century. On the other hand, these tunes have appeared on other greatest hits albums, and some of the songs are not really among their best works. And, of course, one can always wonder why other songs (e.g., "Midnight Rambler") were not selected for this album.

Still, this does represent a greatest hits collection from the early years ("Not Fade Away" or "The Last Time") to their glorious 1960s hits (e.g., "Satisfaction," "Get off of My Cloud," "Street Fighting Man," "Jumping Jack Flash"--with one of the all time guitar riffs) to the early 1970s (e.g., "Brown Sugar," "Happy," Angie," etc. Later hits are also well represented, such as "Miss You," "Start Me Up," "Shattered" (one of my guilty pleasures), "Fool to Cry," and "Under Cover of the Night." The later songs are a bit weak (e.g., "Losing My Touch").

Overall, for those who have not been following Rolling Stones' music over the eons, this is not a bad introduction. For those steeped in Stones' works, this is, to some extent, "deja vu all over again."

5 out of 5 stars Best Bet For The Casual Fan.......2007-06-17

This is a must have CD for any casual Rolling Stones or Classic Rock fan. It has, arguably, all of their greatest hits. The sound quality is excellent and at $25 it's a pretty good value especially considering the Top 40 garbage played on most radio stations will cost you $15 per CD nowadays.

5 out of 5 stars All Great Songs.......2007-02-16

Every song on both discs are songs I remembered and enjoyed. If you are a Stones fan it doesn't get much better.

4 out of 5 stars It's all about Losing My Touch.......2007-01-15

What need be said about the Stones song book that hasn't already been said? They are The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band simply because of their tunes. Most will love the older tunes more than the new ones, but those with open ears and minds should listen to Losing My Touch. Keith puts more emotion in the singing of that ballad than anything Mick has done in 20 years. Not always in key or in time, but Keef absolutley nails the sentiment of that tune. 10 stars for that song alone. The other new ones are disposable, but Losing My Touch is killer stuff!

4 out of 5 stars A great gift .......2006-12-25

Having all but the originals from this collection on various other cds made this a continuous pass-over when I would visit record shops. Getting it for Christmas this morning, however, makes it well worth owning. For completists, you get the new stuff, for newbies it is a great overall introduction going up through Bridges to Babylon, and for collectors you get a beautiful softcover booklet with great photos and a brief essay and a very cool four-fold black and white poster of the five original lads that would look fantastic framed and hung on the wall of a Stones fan on your gift list.
There are arguments to be made for questionable inclusions and objectionable exclusions, but that is the case with any hits collection. I look at it as a very reasonably priced gift and I think the lucky ones who find it under their tree will agree. Merry Christmas!

    4 out of 5 stars ***1/2. Great music. Mostly, anyway. But a so-so compilation.......2004-12-29

There is no denying the quality of this material...unless you're a devout Stones hater, in which case you probably aren't a prospective buyer anyway.
The Stones recorded four new songs to be included on "Licks", which they needn't have done since none of them are particularly memorable, but I suppose they (or their record company) wanted to lure as many people as possible into buying this set.
And there is an awful lot of tremendous, gritty rock n' roll on this 150-minute collection, from the Stones' early 60s R&B to their raunchy 70s singles and latter-day arena rock.

Disc one is mostly devoted to the 60s (well, 64 to 70 or something like that), and it includes almost every one of the Rolling Stones' best-known songs from that period. "Honky Tonk Women" is here, one of my favorites, "Satisfaction", of course, "Paint It Black", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", and the driving "Not Fade Away" set to the Bo Diddley beat.
And disc two is, well, the rest. "Start Me Up", "Brown Sugar", "Angie", "You Got Me Rocking"...the works. Well, almost. Where the hell is "Waiting On A Friend" and "Dead Flowers"?

But I'm still not completely in love with "Forty Licks".
It's hard to really put a finger on it, but I think the song selection is part of the problem. The period from 1970-1990 is only represented by about a dozen songs, and that's just wrong! The mediocre new songs disturb the flow of disc two, and the song sequencing on disc one is not very good either. A few minor songs have been included, and some better ones have not, and together that makes the Stones seem less great than they actually are.

If someone was to ask me which should be their first Stones purchase, I wouldn't advise them to buy "Licks", I don't think. It's good, and most of the music is great, but it could have been presented better. And it has been, actually, on the excellent compilations "Hot Rocks" (which covers 1964-1971) and "Jump Back: Best Of The Rolling Stones 1971-1993".
Those two together provide the very best overview of the Stones' career currently available, even without the tracks from the two fine latter-day albums "Voodoo Lounge" and "Bridges To Babylon".
Or pick up a couple of their live albums, some of those would make a great introduction as well. But don't rush out and buy "Forty Licks" because of the four new songs.

4 out of 5 stars No Jewel Case?!.......2004-03-04

Well guys, I guess it's my fault for not reading these reviews first. You see, I didn't even know that a Collector's Set of Forty Licks was availible until last night, when I was comparing the regular jewel-cased set with this box set. I thought to myself "For five dollars more, I can get this Collector's Set, and it's probably worth it." It was DEFINITELY worth it for the music, but I was very dismayed to learn that this box doesn't include a jewel case to house these discs. Now what do I do if I want to travel with them? I can't carry a huge cardboard box to Myrtle Beach with me! Oh well, live and learn. I'm STILL glad I got this set, and I'll probably buy the jewel cased edition as well so that I can have my Stones and pass them too! Figuratively speaking, of course.

1 out of 5 stars will not be buying this set!.......2004-01-09

I am a relatively new Stones fan, and a friend of mine burned forty licks for me. but having burned isn't the same as having the actual thing, so I was planning on saving up some money to buy this box set thing. Well, I will not be doing that now. According to the other reviewers, the discs aren't even in a jewel case, which is what I really wanted. This is a bad thing to me. I will be buying the regular version and sticking with that. No thank you Virgin and Abkco. I do congratulate Abkco for releasing the other albums in SACD, I don't have SACD but have heard it is amazing!

1 out of 5 stars Old Is Icky.......2003-04-09

These men are wrinkly and icky. The yoplatica of grotantilousness is appalling and wrong. They sing too. BUT THEY ARE ICKY!

3 out of 5 stars Great music, cheap packaging.......2003-01-31

Boy, was I disappointed with the "Special Box Set" packaging! The poster comes folded so there are creases on it, and the CDs don't have jewel cases or even a plastic slot; they are in cardboard slots at the bottom of the box. I'm amazed that the Stones would approve such shoddy presentation. The CDs are great, so I would recommend just buying the "Forty Licks" CDs -- paying an extra 12 bucks for the "Box Set" is definitely not worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Just got it - very cool.......2007-04-10

I've been a Stones fan since about 64 or so. I've got prety much all their original albums. Amazon started posting some old ones with lots of bonus tracks and I thought I'd try one that looked like it had a lot of studio outtakes. This is very neat, something I've waited years for the Stones to do but I'm tired of waiting. Any other band would have released this stuff years ago. It's just too bad you have to buy the original album too and not just the outtakes because anyone who would want the outtakes already has the original album. But these are good: some old blues covers, Jagger/Richards originals that didn't quite cut the mustard, some redos of hits. These aren't just different mixes of songs you already have. Not Fade Away is for sure a different take. Look What You Done I'm not sure about. The harp solo is the same, but I wonder if it would be exactly the same if I put it side by side with the original release. Anyway, these are fun and the recording quality of the bonus tracks is equal to the original release. All good and worth it. From a fan for over 40 years.

The bonus cuts are good if not unfamiliar to aficionados, and the sound quality is fine. The product arrived quickly and is in fine physical shape. But I got the UK version of the first album plus 8 song bonus edition, not the US version + 10 bonus song one I ordered....I mean, it's all good, but.....

You know at beginning of The Departed as the credits roll, Gimme Shelter is played, but you know what?
It's not on the soundtrack CD!
Buy this instead - it is definitive Stones at their best and of course features Gimme Shelter, one of their all time greats - yet underestimated!
