Karate Kid Lives On.......2007-07-18
As a fan of 80's movies such as the Karate Kid series, it's fun to revist the nostalgia of the film in the music. Being able to play the music while traveling or even while at home relaxing, creates the mood and the enjoyment of the exciting story. You have to enjoy singing along with "You're the Best Around". But there is a better collection of Karate Kid Music now. There is a collection of the Scores of all four movies. For the die hard fan of the Karate Kid oriental music, the Score collection (though expensive) is the best to have, however, having both is the full experience since the score doesn't include the popular music.
Bill Conti Karate Kid collection released.......2007-03-31
I'm such a fan of the Karate Kid films -- at least the first two -- that I'll take anything I can get. This is a great set that reminds me of the film, but it's missing Bill Conti's music. However, Varese Sarabande has just released (March '07) a 4-CD set containing Bill Conti's score to ALL FOUR Karate Kid movies. It's a limited press run of 2000 copies, available only on their website. It's fantastic. Now all I want is a CD of the Karate Kid Part II soundtrack that I had on cassette, containing Dennis DeYoung, New Edition, Carly Simon, et al. -- that would make me deleriously happy.
Not worth it........2007-02-13
The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1 is "Moment of Truth" by Survivor. It's a song that bears repeated listening, unlike the others, which are throwaways. You can download "Moment of Truth" on iTunes or just about any music download site, so I wouldn't even bother getting this.
It's a shame that Bill Conti wouldn't release his orchestral music, with the Pan Flute and string-sounding instruments, in a wide release. That's the heart and soul of the film, in my opinion. I checked on the Varese Sarabande website, and a limited edition of the Bill Conti score for all 4 movies in one 4-disc set is indeed available; exclusively through them, of course. There's a limited supply, and the sets are about $45 each. I don't know why they couldn't have the soundtrack for each movie available separately, and why they had to make it a limited supply. Anyway, if you want the scores for just the first 2 movies (minus a couple of the tracks on the "official" releases), for much cheaper, just copy and past the following into Google; you'll come across some sites that have it, (legally as far as I know): Karate Kid Score "Bill Conti" MP3. I unfortunately can't post the URL per the Amazon review guidelines.
Missing Zamfir Music.......2006-06-15
This would have been the only reason I would have bought it, but it's missing from the soundtrack. Luckily I found this track on the Kill Bill Vol 1 album.
Songs aren't too bad..........2006-03-25
The songs on this are okay. It was really fun to hear the music from an awesome 80's movie!

Reba specializes in encouraging ordinary women to face their trials with courage, perseverance, and hope. Consisting mostly of 1990s hits, Volume III deviates from this mission just twice: "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," which is either a slice of Southern gothic or pure kitsch, take your pick; and "She Thinks His Name Is John," a morality tale that mistakes pity for empathy. More typically, Reba shouts, "You go girl!" "Fallin' Out of Love," for example, is about a woman who tells her cheating ex to take a hike when he comes crawling back. "I'm a Survivor" (her sitcom theme and one of the disc's three new recordings) somehow finds common cause between the struggles of a single mom and a preemie. If only there were some real-life scale to it all. Instead, Reba the Diva transforms each song into a grandiose anthem, where even the quietest beginnings end with her revving up for one more key change. --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews:
Real Reba.......2007-07-18
I see a number of 1 star reviews for Reba's Greatest Hits Vol. III and most all those people seem to have as their gripe that this album isn't "country" enough, like Reba is some kind of a traitor to her "true" music. Well, I think it's up to the artist to decide what music he or she makes, and if Reba decides to alter things a bit, so what? In any event, it's not like this is some kind of radical deviation into a genre completely different from her 80s stuff. This is REba's stuff from the 90s and is still most definitely recognizable as country. Reba's voice is powerful as ever. The songs here center on Reba's vocals and storytelling. The best tunes:
Heart is a Lonely Hunter
Night the Lights Went out in Georgia
Take it Back
Why Haven't I Heard from You
One Honest Heart
I haven't gotten it yet, just read the reviews........2007-02-02
I thought that this was a place to write reviews. Not snipe at other reviewers. If you don't like the album just say so. If you don't like the review, then don't read reviews by that reviewer. You don't have to say that they're malfunctioning or that they are children. No one has the exact same tastes in music. It's important to get both sides.
"YOUNG" IS JUST AN ALTERNATIVE WAY OF SAYING "STUPID.".......2006-09-20
My feeling is that most of these....er....uh...."reviews" were written by children MUCH too young to know the superior talent and overall excellence of Empress Reba. I also feel that those same children are better suited to "reviewing" Rap and/or Hip Hop.....as those two genres are NOT music, and these children are NOT adult enough to offer a viable opinion!
Praise be to Empress Reba!
SORRY SONGS FROM SOMEONE WHO USED TO BE GOOD!!.......2006-01-20
If you want a greatest hits package from Reba McEntire, get her first or her second one. This one contains mostly pop tripe from when she all but abandoned country music to "do what sells". This collection is phony...just like the lady herself.
Nice Hits.......2005-12-07
Have you noticed that the Reba bashers are in clusters and they post within a day from one another. Look at their review history and you'll see that they (or should I use the singular form) only reviews and trashes Reba's albums. It's just one psychotic voice acting as 10 in vain hope to drag down her ratings. How pitiful.
Back to the album, the songs are here good, but the selection isn't. It's missing many crucial hits since Greatest hits II.
If anyone wants to buy this package, skip it and buy "#1's" that was recently released.

Rockin' Into the Night!.......2007-03-15
Ok I had seen this song on hear and figured it was a lame remake made as an attempt to reclaim rock roots. Little did I know that this was originally a Survivor song. The CD as a whole is great. I grew up with more of the "pop" survivor with Jimi Jamison on vocals. The earlier stuff with Dave Bickler on vocals beyond this greatest hits album was really rockin'. Hence the album offers a nice blend of the pop songs that revitalized their career in the mid-eighties and the harder edged songs that started them out. It is a must have for even the casualest of Survivor fans and for those who don't know they did have more songs than "Eye of the Tiger." Add this one to the collection.
Survivor"The Best" In the Top 10 best rock and roll bands of all time.......2006-07-07
its amazing how much of a great and wonderful band these guys are , dow i have all their albums except the first and last {yeah coicidentally}every song they put out is perfect rock and roll and this one is a perfect hit album and much more.Even dow
I think their best song is between "Ever Since The World...." and "Santa Ana Winds" this is still a great compilation of one of the best rock and roll bands of all time well they're definitley in my top 10. And going back actually im most certain that "Santa Ana Winds" was without a doubt their best song. With such an incredible piano masterpiece at the beginning its just a beautiful song overall, i really cant get enough of it. But yeahh this Definite Album is a must for any music fan.I would also advice you to get all their albums which i think r all classiks, That signature sound they have is ahhh..... so mindblowing!!!!!!
Best 'Greatest Hits' Available.......2006-04-21
First I would like to say that I don't own this cd. I did not even know it existed until today, but I do own a lot of Survivor Stuff...including all of the Jimi Jamison Survivor cds. This is the best of the lot of Greatest Hits by the band. Popular Girl???? Popular Girl was not a single nor was it a radio hit nor have I heard Survivor do the song in concert so all these people griping about that song should relax and play Vital Signs or make their own compilation. This cd already has four tracks from that cd.....all four singles. There are tracks missing from this cd that I like but everyone has different tastes and I udnerstand that. The one glaring ommision to me is How Much Love. That was a fairly popular single of theres in the 80's off When Seconds Count. I think I will buy this cd there is some stuff I don't own. Would be interested to hear their version of Rockin Into The Night. Other tracks I recommend that are not on this greatest hits - Jackie Don't Go, Tell Me I am the One, It's the Singer Not the Song, She's a Star and Too Hot To Sleep. All better songs than Popular Girl.....in my opinion. As a Survivor Fan I recommend this cd over past compilations. At least Caught in the Game is here and that song was ignored previously.
I like this collection.......2006-02-25
I like this collection. It's generally good. But it's a pity that some songs of theirs are not included, songs like "Jackie Don't Go," "I Never Stopped Loving You," "When Seconds Count," "In Good Faith," and especially some good ones from the "Vital Signs" album, like "Popular Girl," "I See You in Everyone." Of course, Survivor have a lot of good songs to be chosen to compile a greatest hit collection. So probably next time when BMG want to release a new collection of theirs, they may as well release a 2-CD collection pack. One more thing to note, I am most pleased with this collection for two reasons. One is that it's a special gift from my girlfriend. And the other is that it has a nice soft-rock song which I had been looking for for more than 10 years--Across the Miles. And honestly, this song is the reason that my girlfriend bought me this collection.

Now that the Survivor television spectacle is over and done--evil Richard having snatched the coveted million bucks--legions of fans are undergoing Survivor withdrawal. What to do with our Wednesday nights now that we can't watch a bunch of unwashed folks eat rats, scratch bug bites, and scheme behind each other's backs? How about recreating a Survivor scenario in your living room? Load up on sand, rice, and rodents, invite a few friends over (you can vote them out by midnight), dream up a few immunity challenges, and play the Survivor soundtrack to fully capture the effect of the island contest. With the new-agey drums and chants of the main title theme, "Ancient Voices" (the extended version included here!), the pomp and circumstance of "Big Drama," the thrilling trill of "Survivor Yell," and the suspense of "Tally the Vote"--all culled from the show--you can recall the best days of the Tagi and Pagong. --Tod Nelson

Great.......2007-01-04
It is good to be able to listen to music from survivor. Highlights for me are I Can see it and Island Council.
Fantastic Survivor .......2006-08-10
Exactly what I was after - this cd of the Survivor series music is great. We used it for a team workshop and everyone commented on how good it was to have the actual music from the tv show.
Mixed bag, but a satisfied owner........2006-02-21
Since I haven't been able to find any of these tracks on iTunes or elsewhere for individual purchase, I have to give this album a recommendation.
Overall, the music lacks significant cohesiveness in tone to make it really compelling as a whole and sometimes employs curious instrumentation and style, but individual pieces like Voices of Heaven and the main theme (Ancient Voices) are emotively powerful in their simplicity despite the use of what sounds like "sampled" sounds in place of natural instruments like the strings in Ancient Voices.
The CD does a better job than many soundtracks in including key musical moments that should be there even while it is understandably constrained to include the almost glaring departures from the kind of atmosphere you'd expect from music for such a subject.
All the stand out tracks are here: Ancient Voices, I Can See It (think, the reflective waterfall-idol-tossing ceremony from Outback), Voices of Heaven, and the foreboding tribal council backdrop Tally the Vote.
Four fantastic tracks with other nice cues is enough for me to give this album a thumbs up. If you have a favorite cue or two, chances are it's here.
Great Survivor soundtrack.......2005-09-09
This is great. I organized a Survivor theme party for my office and used this soundtrack (I was Jeff!). Folks loved it -- added great atmosphere to the party.
SURVIVOR IS HOT!.......2005-02-16
Well done Russ Landau & David Vanacore! This cd is absolutely brilliant!! The tribal beats and world rythym are complimented really well by the various vocals on the tracks (especially 'My Tribe'). Both 'Ancient Voices' and 'Ancient Voices-Extended' are incredible pieces of music and are without a doubt the best tracks on the CD (Though 'Tally The Votes' and 'Survivor Yell' are right behind them). 'Buzzed' is a little annoying (It's the same flippin' beat over and over again), but you've still got 18 others to choose from. It's amazing; you just put the CD into your player and you're transported right back to Pulau Tiga, (though it's a pity Colleen isn't here with me! What can I say; she's hot and so is this disc!) Even if your not a fan of the show, or you've nver seen it before, this CD is well worth the price, purely because it's GREAT MUSIC!!

Best melodic rock album of all time!.......2006-08-11
Imagine cruising down a sunset highway,in a convertible ,on a hot summer evening ,near dusk.Wind sifting your hair, nothing in front of you on that open road. You slide 'VITAL SIGNS' smoothly into the cd player, notch up the volume slowly & from the acoustic guitar intro. of opening track 'I CANT HOLD BACK' through to the final song 'I SEE YOU IN EVERYONE',you simply would have enjoyed & sang along to,the most perfect rock/pop album in history, bar none!. A genial Melodic rock classic!!,mainly penned by gifted writer/keyboardist JIM PETERIK,with underated guitarist FRANKIE SULLIVAN,the superb & brilliant voice of JIMI JAMESON & rhythm from 'STEPHAN ELLIS(bass) & MARC DROUBAY(DRUMS}.Trust me,a rock fan for 35 years,if you love melodic rock/pop songs by a supreme band & dont own this album, dont hesitate in the slightest!,GO OUT & BUY IT NOW!!.EVERY song{and i mean EVERY!}is a classic. Do i need to say anymore?!!.

This is a great CD from Survivor--an underrated 80's group, in my opinion.
Outstanding release from Survivor !.......2005-12-16
An all American band and the best in it's genre !
Survivor had a long string hits and this album only spawned more !
I can't hold back and High on you are outstanding tunes !
I love Survivor and thought every release was worth the money and I proudly own all of them now !
Great Album, Even If the Title Was Stolen From Rush.......2005-08-09
Released three years after Rush's 'Moving Pictures', which included a song called 'Vital Signs'. But all laughing aside, this is a stand-out for mid-80's pop culture of power ballads. Like 'em or not, you can't deny their appeal to society. And the Jimi Jamison-led Survivor scored three smash hits with this formula. 'The Search Is Over', 'I Can't Hold Back', and 'High on You' all remain timeless, or priceless... or whatever word I'm trying to say.
Their follow-up 'When Seconds Count' doesn't quite match up, although that one is also very good.

If you don't wanna buy any of Survivor's studio albums and just want the hits. This is a great buy. Of course it's got the overplayed and overrated "Eye Of The Tiger", which I CANNOT stand. But it's also got Survivor's other hits like:
I Can't Hold Back
High On You
The Search Is Over
Is This Love
American Heartbeat
and others, plus some nice surprises, such as:
Ever Since The World Began
Rebel Son
and Didn't Know It Was Love
Definately a must own!

I really do like this album. It has classic songs and is a great buy.
GREATEST MOMENTS IN MY LIFE.......2007-05-05
I love this cd!! it makes me feel in the past, in my childhood; I hearded "EYE OF THE TIGER" (from Rocky II soudtrack) when I was 8th years old, and I was enchanted with this song; my second favourite is "THE SEARCH IS OVER", and I like "THE MOMENT OF THRUTH"(from Karate Kid's soudtrack), "I CAN'T HOLD BACK", "BURNING HEART" (from Rocky IV soundtrack), "REBEL SON" and "HIGH ON YOU"; this is an excellent cd, I reccomend it because all of their best material is here and these are (VERY IMPORTANT) the ORIGINAL VERSIONS. BUY IT!!!!
Good music, but how many collections do they need??.......2007-01-11
I like Survivor, but let's be honest, they didn't have a HUGE number of hits, and yet they keep releasing Greatest Hits compilations. How do they do it? Simple-- they put basically the same songs on every compilation and slap a new name on the cover ("Greatest Hits", "Prime Cuts," "Best Of," "Ultimate," etc, etc, etc.) How long they can go on milking this technique is anyone's guess.
Anyway, back to the music. First, there's a glaring omission-- NOTHING from their new album "Reach" is included. Surely at least "Fire Makes Steel" or the title track "Reach" should be on this. They're both great songs and well-deserving of being among their "best." Oh well. Looking at what IS here, you'll find some great 80s AOR (arena-oriented rock.) Here are a few comments on the tracks:
1. Eye Of The Tiger
Who doesn't know THIS one? Yes, it's the song from Rocky. You either love it, or you've heard it so many times you can't stand it anymore. I'm starting to fall into the latter category, honestly, but I guess it wouldn't be possible to release a Survivor compilation without their biggest hit.
2. I Can't Hold Back
One of my all-time favorite Survivor songs. Great acoustic opening, builds wonderfully, and its chorus has a hook that will have you singing along in no time. A real classic.
3. High On You
80s pop at its finest. Fun, catchy, bouncy. Good stuff.
4. Poor Man's Son
An early Survivor track that predates their breakthrough. You'll notice strong hints, though, of what will evolve to become Eye Of The Tiger.
5. The Search Is Over
Their biggest success with a love ballad. A great song with powerful soaring vocals. You've probably heard this at least a few hundred times on the radio back in the 80s.
6. American Heartbeat
Not among my favorites, simply because the chorus is a bit TOO repetative, and it sounds more like music for a car commercial or something, than a "real" song. (incidentally, I found out this was used as the theme song for when they air American Football in the UK. Seems appropriate, I guess.)
7. Burning Heart
Another Rocky track. As songwriter Jim Peterik says, they basically took Eye Of The Tiger and turned it sideways. So, yes, there are similarities. I'm probably in the minority here, but I think I may actually like this BETTER than Eye Of The Tiger (or perhaps that's just because I'm a bit more weary of Tiger.)
8. Is This Love
Like "High On You," this is just another light-hearted, toe-tapping, fun 80s pop song. Fluff, but kind of cool anyway.
9. Ever Since The World Began
I really like this one. A piano ballad that was originally written for Rocky III, but never used. It did find its way onto the Lock-Up soundtrack, though. Of the ballads, I actually like this better than their more popular song, "The Search Is Over."
10. The One That Really Matters
A good, driving mid-tempo rock song. Not much more to say.
11. Caught In The Game
Another good rocker. Cool guitar riffs that strike harder than a lot of their more "radio-friendly" pop that came out after this.
12. The Moment Of Truth
Not actually written by Survivor. This was written for the Karate Kid soundtrack, and Survivor performed it.
13. Rebel Son
Love this one. After a slow intro, it gets very upbeat, and its one of those songs that you really can't listen to while sitting down. Great track.
14. Didn't Know It Was Love
This is from their very underrated album, "Too Hot To Sleep." That was a great album, and for anyone who missed it, all you need to do is hear this infectious song to know exactly what you were missing. Another favorite of mine.
So again, the music itself is really good. I just don't get why they need to keep releasing variations of the same greatest hits package over and over. If you're new to Survivor, though, this could be a good introduction for you. (I'd also recommend looking at "Ultimate Survivor." A lot of the songs overlap with songs on this album though, so don't buy both.)
if you like burning heart you will love this!.......2006-09-14
i have always liked the power and delivery of survivors music from burning heart to eye of the tiger and anthms like high on you..i have listened to alll the musical cuts i had never heard before and i must state for the record i was very blown away by this collection...as will any musical fan of survivor and its unique power by singer and the band itself...

One listen to the eagerly anticipated third CD from the world's biggest girl group and it's clear there is one child with the most destiny. To paraphrase the hip-hop legends, "Who's house?" Beyoncé's house, and with the lead vocalist producing or cowriting all of the 14 tracks, it's hard to imagine what those other two chicks even do (other than act grateful to still have a gig). Seizing creative control is a bold move for Miss Knowles, and anytime an R&B act eschews the beat of the week, they have to be commended. But the problem is that Beyoncé, even with her ambition, has yet to suss out that the key to a pop-R&B smash is hook and melody. With the exception of the now-played-out title track (Can we all take a moratorium on this mighty goddess theme for a second, please?) and the equally you-go-girlish "Independent Woman Part 1," most of the tracks here lack a strong core. Beyoncé crams a litany of thoughts and motifs into her mini-anthems, with samples ranging from Stevie Nicks to Tarzan Boy, but though the cuts sizzle and sparkle and throw off much attitude, Survivor is way too frenetic. Even with some strong singing and songs (most notably the laid back "Fancy"), Survivor lacks real emotion. --Amy Linden

2 1/2 Stars... What a Mess.......2007-03-09
Right away, I will say that this album is a hot mess. This album has nothing but fillers and if it wasn't for the turmoil from the original lineup this horrible album wouldn've ever surfaced. For the exception of "Survivor", "Independent Women Part I, "Brown Eyes", and "Dangerously In Love" the rest is horrible. If you don't have this album, download it instead or you'll be disappointed.

Destiny's Child Still Surviving.......2006-07-26
Destiny's Child has always had a fresh, upbeat sound. They are still carrying it throughout this album, I wasn't let down when I bought it. The songs are hot, they make you want to dance a little and sing along.
The songs that were released as singles were all amazing. "Independant Women" was a great release and appeared on a major movie soundtrack, Charlie's Angels. The song "Survivor" took the world by storm, I must have listened to it a thousand times in one week it was so good. "Bootylicous" was a great song to sing along with, it just made me want to hear more and more Destiny's Child.
There are a couple of songs that just never got through to me, but that's common on most albums. But that's probably just me, because I am mostly into more upbeat songs, and a couple of them weren't. But the overall the album was great, Destiny's Child really got down with the songs on this CD. I found some really great songs such as "Nasty Girl" and "Fancy". I'm glad I bought this album, it turned out to impress me.
The writing really is on the wall........2006-07-15
Doesn't the mediocrity of this cd disprove the claims that Latavia and Letoya were just "backup singers" who were in the group just because they were all such great friends? The Writing's On the Wall is a much better album, and that's not an accident.
You can't screw with chemistry. The first lineup had it. This one didn't. Now they're over. And the world sighs with relief that the fakeness and pretend love and togetherness no longer has to be witnessed.
Now to be fair, half the cd ranges from tolerable to good. The other half is obvious filler. The album as a whole is over-produced and lacks soul that rhythm and blues is supposed to epitomize, therefore it must not be r&b afterall. But this is no real revelation.
<-- Damn, They Did It Again -->.......2006-06-30
My fancy apple pie a la mode gives me a happy face and shiny brown eyes. Knowing that I am an Independent Woman. I know I can find a sexy daddy who will bring me emotion and make me feel like I'm dangerously in love. Even though........ My story of beauty has a sweet, sassy gospel melody. I know I am talented. Forever I am not a nasty girl, I am forever bootylicious and I have my mother to thank. So I want to say thank you. But my goal in life is to become a suvivor like Destiny's Child did when they recorded this album.

YMO re-united for the Earth Live in Japan!.......2007-06-24
This is Yellow Magic Orchestra's 2nd and probably most famous album. The first vinyl version came out in 1979, and YMO was awarded the annual grand prize for the best album of the year in Japan (1979) when the rest of the world didn't know much about computer electric pop music, something YMO called 'Techno Pop'. Germany's Kraftwerk was one of only a few other groups of this kind.
This album contains famous pieces, including 'Technopolis', which starts with a computerised voice saying 'TOKIO', written by Ryuichi SAKAMOTO ('The Last Emperor', 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence'); 'Absolute Ego Dance' (by Harry HOSONO); and probably the most famous YMO number 'Rydeen' (by Yukihiro TAKAHASHI). I personally love the YMO version of the Beatles 'Day Tripper' and the main theme 'Solid State Survivor (SSS)', in which the guitarist of Sheena & the Rokkets, Makoto AYUKAWA, takes part. By the way, SSS contains some strange electric 'coughs' and 'laughter', and a Japanese expression 'Moshi Moshi? (Hello Hello?)' can also be heard a few times. 'Rydeen' contains some 'horse running' noises too. The sound of synthesizers (especially 'Prophet 5'), synthe-drums and the futuristic melody are all amazing! But the most amazing thing is that this album was released in 1979! YMO came to the USA & Europe in 1979, even before they became famous in their home country of Japan.
FYI: YMO was re-united for one night only for the Earth Live event from Kyoto(07/07/07). They were the last group to appear on stage in Japan and played a few pieces including the legendary 'Rydeen' with a new interpretation, which you can see on YouTube.
From the golden age of analog synthesis -- don't miss it.......2007-04-09
Many of the cuts on this CD were originally released on a vinyl record called "X Multiplies", with replicated mannequins of Sakamoto, Hosono, and Takahashi on the cover, staring at the camera. It was one of the coolest covers ever! It kinda makes you miss the days when cover art was, to a large extent, what sold music. Solid State Survivor was released later.
There are many wonderful cuts on this essential YMO CD, among them "Behind The Mask", with it's incredibly tight vocoder vocal and percussion section. It's one of my three favorite songs of all time -- I am a pro musician myself with a very broad musical perspective, and I'm telling you, I never tire of "Behind The Mask". Technopoly is pretty cool too. Nearly all the tracks are excellent, but Behind The Mask remains a classic for all time.
I can't strongly enough recommend YMO's other albums, as well. It's techno rock and it doesn't get any cleaner or tighter than this.
Great synthpop album.......2006-09-23
YMO is one of the pioneers of the synthpop as well as Kraftwerk and Devo. "Solid State Survivor" is considered to be the most famous album of them. Although it was released almost 25 yeas ago, you will never feel it old-fashoned. There is a story related to this album. Although Michael Jackson offered YMO to cover "Behind the Mask", YMO refused. Later, YMO regretted because it would be included in "Thriller" the mega hit album. In 1986, "Behind the Mask" was covered by Eric Clapton with Michael Jackson's lyrics.
Important album.......2006-08-06
While as usual not everything is first rate, and also some of this album has aged quite a bit, it is one of the better and more essential YMO albums. They were quite innoveative at the time and should not be forgotten for what they were: one of the most innovative early synth groups that were working in the tradition of Kraftwerk.
Yes!.......2006-06-18
Lighten up.
Ignore the sad clown at the top. Judging music based on the production technology used at the time of it's recording is an obvious sign of ignorance and one of the pitfalls of dealing with many electronic music fans ($$$$) in general. For those of us who understand context and know how to have a good time, this album is a gem. The sound of the production on this album gives it a timelessness and the overall character of this group, specifically this album, is wonderfully idiosyncratic and just can't be replicated. There are a few filler tracks, sure. Maybe two at the most. If that bothers you, you probably need to be reminded that this is YMO and not Stockhausen. If you're looking for a landmark synthpop album... BUY IT. If you like it, give Naughty Boys a chance. It sounds a lot different, but it's a welcomed runner up.

With his first solo album, Pete Rock reminds us why his past work with partner CL Smooth resulted in some of the most luscious hip-hop beats the art form has ever known. While Rock's lyrical presence falters, his musical craft makes up the difference as the Soul Brother No. 1 switches from the sublimely soulful ("Mind Blowin'") to the ultrafunky ("Da Two") to the dramatically sinister ("The Game"). Soul Survivor may lack the lyrical credentials to contend to be the year's best hip-hop album, but it easily ranks as one of the year's most listenable efforts. Sit down, max, and relax to the sultry sounds of Pete Rock. --Oliver Wang

Dont Sleep .......2007-07-03
This is a great album a freaking classickkkk if you dnt have grab a copy worth the money !!!!!
Soul Survivin' 101.......2007-04-16
Let me start by saying that Pete Rock is the most underrated rapper/producer in the game. Next in line would be DJ Quik. Pete Rock's laid back flow continues to impress as he steps his production game up further with this great effort Soul Survivor. Standout Tracks: TRU MASTER(Inspectah Deck And Kurupt light up this first single), HALF MAN HALF AMAZIN(another classic combo with M E T H O D Man), RESPECT MINE, THA GAME(the best collabo on this album), # 1 SOUL BROTHER, ONE LIFE TO LIVE(Its the MC Eiht with soul brother # 1), TAKE YOUR TIME(relaxing without the mary jane influence), SOUL SURVIVOR, ITS ABOUT THAT TIME, STRANGE FRUIT and DA TWO(classic Pete Rock and CL Smooth track). Filler: Verbal Murder 2(Big Pun's verse was fire but the rest of the track was iffy plus the sampling of Fat Albert...... Pete Rock can do better than this. Bottom Line: Pete Rock's Soul Survivor is one of the best albums of 98 and is definetly a slept on album of 98. Pete Rock and the guests were blazing plus Pete is still nice with the production. One of the better albums of that year.
One of my favorite rappers/producers .......2007-01-03
Man what can I say about Pete Rock I love his flow. People know him more of a producer but to me he is a nice rapper also his flow as always been nice and is much better then most rappers out there and he does not get respect for it also. Now to his producing out of the world he knows how to lay a beat down and it would be a dream to be in the studio with him while he is doing his thing just to be in that type of hip hop enviroment where you breath and live hip hop is something that is what makes me still love hip hop even at 37. I dont have a favorite cut on this album as I like most of them and it will be the same on all of my reviews for Pete Rock you can say I am biased between him and Primo as I can never find a fault it is not like I am looking for one. I have at least 100 records from Pete Rock and will keep buying stuff that he brings out.
The perfect profile of 1990s hip hop.......2006-04-05
If someone asked you for an album that represented 90s rap, what would you give them? "Ready to Die", "Doggystyle", "Illmatic", "The Chronic"? I know for sure that I would right away hand over "Soul Survivor". Although it is not even close in recognition or popularity, "Soul Survivor" is an album that has everything that was great about 90s rap: intricate, focused old-school beats, well delivered hooks, and a guest roster reminiscent of any 1990s Source awards. Pete Rock shines brightly on his first solo album. Without partner CL Smooth, he is given space to work with his favorite artists and produce the kind of beats he wants to. He stays right on track, producing many peaceful, laid back, and beautiful beats with complex horn and drum patterns, along with a few harder, streetwise ones. Pete is not the greatest lyricist on the mic, but his guests hold their weight, for the most part delivering lyrics to fit the beats. Pete sings most of the hooks, and his chilled baritone voice is perfect for the job. "Soul Survivor" is a great album that should definitely not be slept on.
After his obligatory intro, he bursts in with the great "Tru Master", with the unlikely team of Inspectah Deck and Kurupt. The beat has horns, flutes, and bass, very well done, and the MCs reminisce over old times. On "Half Man Half Amazing", Method Man and Pete rock over a stringed production. "Respect Mine" has a great hook, head bobbing beat and good lyrics from the OC. "Tha Game" is maybe Pete's hardest track ever, with a tough instrumental and rappers Prodigy, Raekwon, and Ghostface Killah delivering hard raps. On "#1 Soul Brother", Pete boasts of his DJ skills over a spinning xylophone. "Rock Steady" uses an altered Erik B beat for a catchy track with Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. "Truly Yours" teams some of the greatest ever (Pete, Large Professor, and Kool G Rap) for a diss track with a great beat directed at various people, and the sax loop is the same as in Nas's "It Ain't Hard to Tell", but he gives it new life. My favorite here is probably "One Life to Live", with a surprising appearance by west coast vet MC Eiht. The beat has muted horns and a peaceful drum pattern, and Eiht and Pete chronicle their careers. "Take Your Time" and "Mind Blowin'" are both beautiful, toned down tracks with creative production. "Soul Survivor" is Pete's best solo rap here, dropping lots of philosophy and thoughts over a great instrumental. "Da Two" is Pete and CL's reunion, and the excellent song with great lyrics, hook, and beats brings back memories. The last three tracks are all very strong efforts with an impressive roster, including Noreaga, Big Pun, Common, Tragedy Khadafi, Heavy D, Sticky Fingaz, Cappadonna, and Beenie Man.
"Soul Survivor" is one of the more complete albums of the 90s and a great compilation of the best MCs combined with the best producer of all time. This is one of Pete's greatest releases ever, and he shows exactly why he should be remembered as the world's greatest DJ.

Glorious All the Way Through.......2007-06-27
This one is fabulous from start to finish if you love Jamison on vocals and soaring melodies. Won't like as much if you think Caught In The Game and Eye Of The Tiger CD's are best Survivor material. I like better than Vital Signs but both are of similar caliber. Basically can listen to whole CD and love it.
Gotta love cheesy love songs.......2007-03-07
I love this cd. Great music all around!! Can't beat 80's love songs!
Not As Good As 'Vital Signs'.......2005-08-09
Almost a carbon copy of it's predecessor, 'Vital Signs'.
Unlike 'Vital Signs', which was virtually flawless, this one has some flaws. This follow-up has less memorable songs, cheesier lyrics, and drags a little bit more. Still, a good overall effort nonetheless. The highlight is obviously 'Is This Love', which reached as high as #9 on the bilboard charts. Overall, same mid-80's power-ballad formula as 'Vital Signs', which is never a bad thing, is it?
Excellent Melodic Rock N Roll.......2003-08-19
I love this cd. The hard driving 80's classic guitar rythyms of Kevin Sullivan mixed with smooth synthesizers of Jim Pederick, solid and steady drums, and strong gutsy vocals of Jimi Jamison is a pleasure to listen to. This album is similar in sound to their previous 1984 cd Vital Signs.IS THIS LOVE was the big hit single, but many songs could have been hits on this cd, such as the OCEANS,KEEP IT RIGHT HERE,REBEL SON, and BACKSTREET LOVE AFFAIR. If you love 80's hard rock, you can't go wrong with this one.
EXCELLENT !! A MUST !.......2003-04-29
I a real fan of Survivor and this album. A Great Album !!!!
I'm listening to it again and again !!! Every song is a hit.
