4 out of 5 stars At last, my collection is complete........2007-07-22

The rest of the songs in the catalog not in the first box set. Frankly some of these should have been in the original; 'Good Times, Bad Times', 'You Shook Me', 'Bron-Yr-Aur', 'Hot Dog', 'Darlene', 'Hots on For Nowhere', 'Down By the Seaside' and 'How Many More Times' all great tunes that would be better off in box set 1 as opposed to some of the dreck that somehow got on there, particularly some of the stuff from the 3rd album.

5 out of 5 stars Completer set.......2006-02-11

If you have the four disc boxed set you know you are missing quite a few essential Zep cuts so, spend a little more and get this two disc set to complete your collection.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Companion To The First Boxed Set.......2005-10-04

Led Zeppelin's first boxed set was an excellent starting point for casual fans, but also left out a lot of great stuff. With many newbies craving for more Led Zeppelin, another boxed set was compiled called "Led Zeppelin Box Set, Vol. 2". How does it hold up? Read on for my review.

Positives:
-If you own the boxed set and are interested in having all the tracks omitted from it, than this collection will do just fine. This has all the important stuff left off the first collection, including "Living Loving Maid (She's Just A Woman)", "The Lemon Song", "Good Times, Bad Times", "Sick Again", "Moby Dick", "The Crunge" and "Bron-Yr-Aur".
-The songs sound really good.
-It's reasonably priced.
-There's a previously unreleaed song called "Baby Come On Home". It's a really good song.

Negatives
-As great as this collection, it would have been better to have the two cds split into two separate cds and inserted onto the first boxed sets.
-This cd is very hard to locate.

Overall, if you have the first Led Zeppelin boxed set, than you should definitely get this second editoion as well.

4 out of 5 stars Led Zep Box Set 2.......2005-09-18

I actually like Box Set 2 better than Box Set 1. In this set, Jimmy Page seems to have the most input., rather than Set 1, which was more geared to Robert Plant. If you love Zep Music... you will LOVE Box Set 2. Good Listening!

5 out of 5 stars If you have the 1st Box Set, you need this one!.......2005-05-30

Box Set 2 contains the rest of the studio recordings that didn't make its way on to the 1st box set.

Buy Box Set 1 and 2 together to get the complete studio recordings of the Led Zeppelin catalog.

Fans who want the chronological timeline preserved are better off with the Complete Studio Recordings box set. It takes up a hefty amount of shelf space on your library!

But for fellas like me who just want to compress the Led Zeppelin studio recordings into a nifty 6 CD set, get Box Set 1 and 2 together today!

The glory days of Led Zeppelin are chronicled comprehensively in Atlantic Record's 1999 Early Days best-of set, which leaves this '73-to-'79 package shorter on obvious crowd-pleasers. Still, this secondary set shows just how powerful Zeppelin were at their zenith. Taken from the band's final four albums, the songs here--"No Quarter," "Houses of the Holy," and "Song Remains the Same" among them--brought audiences to their feet in stadiums across the world while the Zeppelin juggernaut trampled their competition underfoot. Zeppelin defined hard rock, but were also capable of a delicacy that's easy to overlook; indeed, that dimension is missing from the picture of Zep offered here. Otherwise, these two companion volumes offer a rewarding introduction to Led Zeppelin. --Patrick Humphries

3 out of 5 stars Song Remains the Same poor version, Is there better? .......2007-02-02

Well these 2 songs I was looking for in newer cd like this to see if they are more powerful than original due to clean up, and they are, Achilles Last Stand, Nobody's Fault But Mine. you can hear the dif when you turn it up. loudness is not the same as power, you can have loudness but that doesnt mean you have the power of the song, you can have power, and that can mean "real" clear loudness.

However, the one song I really bought this for, because I really love Bonham in it, is Song Remains The Same. But it falls way soft. no power at all. Same as No Quarter, flat. Is because the songs are much older and on "lesser" masters? well I dont get that then because Who The West Was Won is 1972 and is the best sounding cd around.

So anyhoo, can anyone tell me a great version of Song Remains? I know the Live version on the movie sound track is the best I have heard, but I am not going to buy that just for one song, for I have all the rest of the songs elsewhere. I already wasted money on this cd. How The West Was Won is great, only it doesnt have Song Remains, and everything else after 1 and 2, but I know I have heard a really good version of Song Remains.

Is there another live version of it? or do I just have to suck it up and buy the movie cd to get it. or is this even the one i am used to hearing on the radio at times? I know I hear a live version, Its the only one I know of. the drumming on it really pops. way more than the studio version.

okay okay, thanks in advance for any info, you can post in the "comment" area below my review, thanks.

4 out of 5 stars The (Sort of) Best of Led Zeppelin.......2006-02-15

As a rule, best of albums are rarely better than the individual albums. Led Zeppelin shows this in a way that few others can. The seperate records, isolated, are concise enough to not sound odd together. The latter days collection of Led Zeppelin leaves some to be desired (Namely, the lack of space on a single CD). "Latter days" could be useful for somebody who hadn't ever heard Led Zeppelin before. It includes a smattering of songs, from their several later albums (no longer named after the band), almost all of which I like. The individual songs are rated below:

1. The Song Remains The Same - 7/10
The Song Remains The Same is one of those songs that never really stands out, but is good in its own right. The vocal effects can get a little tedious after several listens, and the bass sounds a tad thin, but otherwise it is a typical Zeppelin Song.

2. No Quarter - 9/10
An excellent song. Some kind of keyboard starts the track, and gives it the sad feel that it maintains for the rest of the song. It has many pauses, which some may dislike. The guitar is simple (for Page) and the voice is nice, but rarely heard. The drums are excellent. Overall, one of my favorites.

3. Houses of the Holy - 8/10
Not outstanding, but still fun to listen to. It has the excellent groove that comes with most of Led Zeppelin's hard rock songs. Catchy tune and the classic Led Zeppelin Sound.

4. Trampled Underfoot - 8/10
Awesome keyboard hook, but gets a little dull after a while. The strong point in this track is definetly the guitar and keyboard. Otherwise, a rather ordinary track.

5. Kashmir - 10/10
Such an awesome groove. A trademark track (and for a good reason, too). Robert Plant refrains from his high-pitched cries and allows for an easily listenable song. Very catchy, and one of those songs that would make you look so cool if it were playing in the background as you walk...

6. Ten Years Gone - 7/10
Cool song. Slow start, that slowly builds up to Page's "Wall of guitars". Not exceptional, but a necessity nonetheless.

7. Achilles Last Stand - 9/10
One of Led Zeppelin's longest songs. However, despite being over ten minutes long, it manages to sound like a far shorter song, which is the mark of an excellent song.

8. Nobody's Fault But Mine - 10/10
My favorite on the album. Multitracked guitar, with Plant's voice following the guitar sometimes, sometimes going off on its own. The bass combines with the drums to make them sound more powerful. The bridge is complex to play, easy to follow, and just sounds so cool.

9. All of My Love - 6/10
Very experimental for Led Zeppelin. Sometimes Robert Plant's voice's pitch changes for the worse making this song slightly annoying. Nothing exceptional about any of the instumental work, and doesn't entirely live up to the Led Zeppelin standard. However, the orchestra sounds very consice with the rest of the song.

10. In The Evening - 8/10
The beginning is very similar-sounding to "In the Light," off of Physical Graffiti. However, during the rest of the song, it blossoms into the hard-rockers that Zeppelin is known for. Definitely a good song, but not one of my favorites.

In Conclusion, Latter Days is an album for people just getting into Led Zeppelin, or just casual fans. Happy Listening!

2 out of 5 stars No Matter Who You Are, This Album Is Probably Not For You........2006-01-11

Looking over the songlists for both Early Days and Latter Days, I am often baffled as to who these compilations are aimed at. (My 2 star rating is obviously more a criticism of the compilation than the music itself, which is 5 stars all the way).

So, are you an existing Zeppelin fan? Then chances are that you already have every one of these songs. There's nothing new or contraversial here. Certainly you should have all of Early Days (which comprises the hits from Led Zeppelin I-IV) and much of this CD.

If you don't own these tracks yet, you would be MUCH better off to invest in "Houses of the Holy" and "Physical Grafitti" INSTEAD. You'd get the first six (out of ten) tracks from Latter Days, as well as the inexplicably absent: "In My Time of Dying", "The Rain Song", "Over The Hills And Far Away", "D'yer Mak'er" and "The Ocean".

Are you just discovering Led Zeppelin? (If so, savour these first listens.) Or a casual fan who doesn't own any albums? DON'T START WITH THIS. Zeppelin is just not a "hot singles" band, you NEED to invest in a few full albums; I can guarantee that you won't regret it.

What albums SHOULD you start with?

The Most Essential:
Led Zeppelin I
Led Zeppelin IV

The Also Essential:
Led Zeppelin II
Houses of the Holy

The Very, Very, Very Good:
Physical Graffiti
BBC Sessions

There's obviously room for negotiation on which of those albums are "better" and given the depth of Zeppelin's catalogue you'd be hard-pressed to choose a best release. But, one thing I can say for sure is that any Zepp fan (new or old) is better served buying some of these albums rather than Early and/or Latter Days.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Compilation.......2005-12-31

Where the hell is "The Wanton Song"? I mean, this is one of their hardest rocking songs, off of Physical Graffiti. I also think "Houses of the Holy" should have been taken off, and instead, they should have had "In My Time of Dying". Track listings:

1. The Song Remains the Same-8/10
2. No Quarter-7/10
3. Houses of the Holy-6/10
4. Trampled Underfoot-10/10
5. Kashmir-10/10
6. Ten Years Gone-4/10
7. Achilles Last Stand-9/10
8. Nobody's Fault But Mine-7/10
9. All My Love-8/10
10. In the Evening-9/10

3 out of 5 stars Not really all that good..........2005-11-20

Okay, Early Days has a bunch of masterworks by Zeppelin. Latter Days, on the contrary, only has one great song, a couple good songs, but mostly average material.
Song Remains the Same...I think this one's a bit overrated myself. A lot of Zeppelin fans would argue, but it just isn't there. The rhythm section is solid, but the guitarwork is merely average and Plant's delivery just hurts my ears. No Quarter would be etter if it were HARDER!!! I mean it, the idea of presenting the band as sort of like the Nazgul from Lord of the Rings was good, but it's a bit boring. Not as bad as Houses of the Holy, though. The word "Dull" doesn't begin to describe it. Trampled Underfoot is a great, riff driven tune.
Then there's Kashmir, by far the band's most overrated song. What's so bad about it? For one, it just drags forever, making those eight-and-a-half minutes feel like eight-and-a-half hours. For another, Robert Plant sounds like he had just smoked a good fifty packs before the song was recorded. For all I know, he did. For a third, the lyrics definetly are NOT there. The string arrangements are brilliant, but get old after awhile. Ten Years Gone is decent, I guess. I mean, at least it's listenable (unlike Kashmir!)
Achilles Last Stand would be, by far, the best song on this disc and the longest. I love Last Stand and you should too. Sadly, it's all downhill from here, starting with the endless blues Nobody's Fault But Mine, and continuing with the In Through the Out Door material. The last two songs seem like Zeppelin Sells Out. Where are the classic riffs and crashing drums that made Zep famous? Lost. What's in their place? Synthesizers. Lots of synthesizers. In their struggle to keep up with the times, they betrayed their roots and created two amazing bores (All My Love and In the Evening).
Inessential, but it sure is better than buying all the later albums!

5 out of 5 stars metalhead turns bluegrass.......2006-12-04

being a big fan of heavy metal and rock, especially zeppelin, sabbath, alice in chains, guns n roses etc., i was turned on to this cd by one of my banjo playin' buddies. although i am also a big fan of allison krauss, i never gave the blugrass sound much props in my music world. this cd changed that for me! my beloved zeppelin done in bluegrass style? well let me tell ya....as far as tributes go, and i have heard many...this one does the beauty of led zeppelins music, and takes it, and me, into the wonderful world of bluegrass. i have since purchased the eagles, allman brothers and the bluegrass sampler cd's, and also acquired works by alison brown and bela fleck, amongst others. i have been playing them endlessly, enjoying all the nuances of the variuos stringed instruments and the way they have been arranged by these truly amazing "pickers". needless to say, i think more of these fine "pickin' on" series cds will be gracing my cd collection and be stored on my ipod!!

4 out of 5 stars Rockin' Bluegrass.......2005-08-03

After the movie O'Brother Where Art Thou? Bluegrass has really gained in popularity. This is a very hip combo of Led Zeppelin songs and "mountain" or Bluegrass music. Classical rock songs have been done - this is a refreshing twist on some very familiar songs!

5 out of 5 stars The Grand Ole 'Rock' Opry Takes on Led Zep.......2004-01-04

It's not too far a stretch from the blues-inspired jams of Led Zeppelin to the bluegrass takes offered on these CDs. These instrumental versions of many LZ classics are performed essentially by studio musicians, I guess, since they fall under the "various artists' banner. These artist do justice to LZ's catalog, there's no mistaking the tunes, but the bluegrass flavor compliments the originals nicely. "No Quarter", "Your Time is Gonna Come", and "Gallows Pole" translate very well into their new versions. Would have loved to hear "Dazed and Confused."

Pickin Led Zep volume one is excellent. This second volume fall quite a bit short from the first one. Sometimes all the t's are crossed and the i's are dotted and something is missing. This CD lacks inspiration. The first volume has some the best bluegras musicians aroung today and the second volume doesn't have the same line up. It basically done by David West from California. Basically any pickin on CD that is done by this guy lacks inspiration sorry to say.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing pickin'.......2003-05-12

This album is amazing, with its mix of bluegrass and classic rock. The artists are just spectacular with their renditions. This album will at the very least have your foot tapping through every song. Its a boogie down mix of classic music and classic rock, a real grassroots style. If you are a Led Zeplin fan or a bluegrass fan you should definately buy this album!

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2003-04-24

Back in my high school days in the 1970s, Led Zeppelin was by far my favorite group. I considered them to be the most talented rock group in the world; 30 years later I still think they were the greatest rock group in existence at the time.

To hear a dynamic group like Led Zeppelin put to the music of a string quartet may sound like Muzak-ing Led Zeppelin, but the album doesn't come off that way. The string players are both respectful and playful, having fun with the bizarre mixture of Led Zeppelin music and the instrumentation of a string quartet without losing the feel of the originals, presenting an enjoyable performance of the songs, rather than a destroyed one that Muzak-ing would do.

My favorite two songs on here are "The Ocean" and "Whole Lotta Love"--not necessarily my favorite Led Zeppelin songs in general, but I like the effect here. With this string quartet adaptation of "The Ocean," an almost Middle Eastern sound is revealed in the melody that I'd never noticed before. This is the kind of thing that makes such a project worthwhile--bringing things out of the songs previously unnoticed. "Whole Lotta Love" works much better than I thought it would--the cello line is great! This song is augmented by a distant, fuzzed-up sampling of the song's original vocals, the only song on this album to do that. But it doesn't lose the feel of this "classical" album.

"Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" also works especially well, although I was never a fan of the song to begin with.

The other titles are pretty good too. You'd probably appreciate this album more if you knew the original songs, though.

Do not be misled the way I was. This is NOT a Led Zeppelin CD. It's a bunch of covers of Led Zep songs. No offence to MPB, but there's no substitute for the real thing.

    5 out of 5 stars It's awesome!.......1999-02-17

A really good Led Zepplin CD featuring some of the best songs like Dazed and Confused and Over the hills and far away. It's a really cool CD. I know I'm going to buy it!
