4 out of 5 stars Good stuff, not the greatest.......2007-07-11

This is a tough one to review. Zepplin was indisputably a great band, and I'm a fan, so it would seem natural to just give it a 5. But I don't quite feel this collection enough for that. The good songs on this collection are awesome, some of the best rock from the 70s for sure. These guys had great talent and great music and lyrics. However, the collection's not as complete as it could be and some of the chosen songs are lesser-knowns that are kind of long. The songs that are longer kind of slow things down and gets a little tedious at times. The Zepplin fan should get this collection as a way to have a bunch of the really good tunes in one location, that's the chief strength here.

5 out of 5 stars Early Days, Better Days.......2007-07-05

Was impressed with the album. Was missing a few songs that I really wanted, but over all, it was worth my money.

4 out of 5 stars A nice concise jolt of Zeppelin.......2007-03-23

I really wanted to give this 5 stars, but.....I couldn't. Because.....

I have to first agree with the reviewer who commented about Heartbreaker, Livin' Lovin' Maid, and Misty Mountain Hop being excluded from this set. I felt similarly about those songs, as well as Thank You, which, as obscure as it was, I have always counted as one of my favorites.
But, on the other side of the coin, when do we ever find a greatest hits compilation that has each and every song we want? Never.
That said, I went and bought this CD because my young son is very much into drumming and is now becoming familiar with great rock drummers. So I knew he had to get to know Bonzo, and when I saw this in the store I grabbed it up because it had a really good lineup. When we popped it into the dashboard on the way home - wow - we both really enjoyed it, he was air drumming in the back seat like a lunatic and I was just thoroughly enjoying one song after another. If it included the above songs, it would be a true stairway to heaven for me. This set is great, highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for introduction to Zeppelin.......2006-08-10

The Early Days, were the introduction to Led Zeppelin for me. The Latter Days came shortly after. The reason I say these two albums are great (especially the first of the two) is how well they introduced someone to the band. The Early Days, when I first got it, I realized every single song on the CD was an absolute masterpiece and within a week, Zeppelin had surpassed GNR on my favourite all-time band. The complete studio albums came soon after.

I understand why an older fan of Led Zeppelin would be disappointed with this; it misses a few major hits such as Ramble On, Heartbreaker, Over the Hills and Far Away, and The Rain Song (these songs could have still fit onto the two albums without passing the 80-minute CD limit). However, I find this almost a good thing, because it led me to not end up disappointed when getting their studio albums, realizing that there were even more masterpieces than just the ones on the greatest hits, for example: the ones listed above, Living Loving Maid, Tangerine, and all the remaining songs on the fourth album.

With such little new music as great as once was, it's becoming more necessary for younger music-listeners such as me, to look into classic rock like Zeppelin. There was no greater way than by getting the Early Days and the Latter Days.

And, how much better to have all the songs in their albums' order on a greatest hits compilation, yet to still have it end on the uncomparible Stairway to Heaven. Great job.

4 out of 5 stars Leaves out too many great songs........2006-07-24

If this is a "best of", then why are average songs here when Zep has so many great ones?
Here are ones that NEED to be in a best of for Zeppelin that were omitted here.

-Ramble On
-Heartbreaker / Livin Lovin Maid
-Over The Hills And Far Away\
-Dyer Maker
-The Ocean
-Fool In The Rain

Overall it's a good collection that has all their biggest songs, but it still has some average songs and is missing a lot of great songs.

Buy it for a good overview of their career.

Having previously released no less than four boxed repackages of their studio output, Led Zeppelin may well be the band who made redundancy redundant. Well, surprise! They've done it again. Culled from the band's first four albums by Jimmy Page himself (as if a fourth-grader with an FM radio would have been hard-pressed), this collection captures Page and company's blues-riff-ripping prime, relieved only by the folksy "Battle of Evermore" and the song that made Skynyrd's "Free Bird" (almost) tolerable, the ubiquitous "Stairway to Heaven." Strung end-to-end, this is pretty heady stuff, and a great introduction to Zep's core early work for anyone who's spent the last couple of decades hangin' with Gilligan and the Skipper. The rest of us may just grumble and fast-forward to the previously unreleased 1969 live video clip of "Communication Breakdown." The package includes a 24-page booklet with many rare photos. -Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Early Days.......2006-07-19

"In the days of my youth, I was told what it means to be a man, now I've reached that age, I've tried to do all those things the best I can" (Led Zeppelin). These are the first two lines in the song "Good Times Bad Times" By Led Zeppelin. The group's CD, Early Days introduced this song as it's first on the CD. This CD basically gathers what the band thought their favorite beginning tracks were and summed it all up in one CD. Atlantic Records is the recording studio that produced this CD. The CD came out in November of 2002 and is still one of my favorites until this day. The CD was $25 when I first bought it, but it had a special feature of coming with their CD Latter Days. On this day, there had been a total of one million copies sold and are ranked at 2,582 on the selling list. There aren't any hidden tracks, but they are a very well known band to everyone.
The artists had previously released 12 other albums consisting of these songs in them. They chose to make this album "Early Days" because the songs were all highly liked songs. The artist always keeps a hard rock genre to their songs. This album doesn't change anything from their past, but still brings a huge audience to its liking. "Led Zeppelin may well be the band who made redundancy redundant" (Jerry McGulley). Jerry wrote an editorial review for this CD and stated that Led Zeppelin can definitely pull off a repeat of songs on a new CD. I agree with Jerry because they are an old band that shows the people that just newly started listening to the CD what the older Led Zeppelin songs were like and if they are true fanatics, they should enjoy these songs too.
This CD definitely is a great one! It really makes me relax and I feel like almost all of the songs on the album distract me from my thoughts. I know this sounds bad, but it's a good thing. It helps me to take the stress off of what my real days in my life are and lets me focus on the different instruments and vocals in the songs. Of course, after I hear the CD once, I can't help but wanting to listen to it over and over again. I feel a force just pulling me in to want to reattach to the CD and listen to every word in every song again. Even though the band is unique, in a weird way, I think the band relates to the Beatles. Back then, a lot of the bands talked about drugs because they were doing them. I know that the Beatles definitely wrote songs about drugs as did Led Zeppelin. The CD may be same as ever, but in my mind, this definitely works. I believe it does because as a true Led Zeppelin fanatic, you can never get sick of any of their songs even the early ones. Every huge fan has to know all the songs by the artist in order to get the real characteristics of the band.
With all the great tracks on this CD, five of them are my favorite. Track number two, "Babe I'm gonna leave you" has many qualities that are interesting. The background guitar and the singing really got my attention because the beginning of the song, there's only the guitar and singing bringing attention to them. "We gonna go walkin' through the park every day. Come what may, every day" (Led Zeppelin). This quote shows that the singer has feelings for someone which reminds me of the feelings that I have for someone. "Dazed and Confused" which is track number 3 is also a much loved track of mine. Because of the rhythm that the song creates, it gives much relaxation to the listener. The lyrics tell of the struggle that one may go through which opens my mind to thinking about all the struggles everyone goes through. "I don't know but I been told, a big-legged woman ain't got no soul" (Led Zeppelin). This quote comes from track nine, "Black Dog". This example of humor is a main reason why I enjoy this song because it takes me back to a time and place and reminds me of my old boss. The different instrumental parts stand out to me especially the guitar parts. My most favorite song on this CD is "Stairway to Heaven". I've always liked this song for some reason and now I know it's because it was fate that I was going to propose to my fiancé while this song played in the background. "Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run there's still time to change the road you're on" (Led Zeppelin). Everyone always has a decision to make so this quote embodies every day life and the decisions that you have to make.
Even though I love this CD, I have to admit that one song doesn't work in my opinion. I don't think it does because it doesn't seem to keep that same genre as the other songs on the CD. The track number is 11 and it's called "The Battle of Evermore". "Oh, dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light. The dark Lord rides in force tonight and time will tell us all" (Led Zeppelin). This line especially doesn't seem like it talks about anything significant. The lyrics don't make sense to me because they seem kind of out there. They don't seem to explain anything or go anywhere. Also, in my opinion, I don't see this song as a hard rock one like the band is supposed to be. The song seems too high pitched with their voices. Not only that, but the background guitar seems like it should be played down an octave or two. I like to hear bass and in this song, there isn't any. The guitar in this song is just very unusual because of how high they played it. At some points, in my eyes, they seem like they may have missed a note singing or so because it doesn't always flow. The other songs on the CD keep that hard rock theme to them even if they slow down, but with this one, the song just seems like they slapped it together. I know others may disagree with me, but that's what I notice.
I basically only see older men ever buying this CD because of how old the songs were. They had been from the 1960s so older men would know them. I believe the fans, like me, were very happy when this CD came out because it high lighted many great songs they had when they first began as Led Zeppelin. If I had to give this CD a rating out of ten, it would definitely be an eleven! "IT BASICALLY GIVES YOU AN OVERVIEW OF THE ORIGINAL 4" (foolishmortal12). This guy knows what the CD is all about and since Led Zeppelin changed, the CD shows how the four started off. The band has been here for many years and I believe they will always be here to stay. I don't think Led Zeppelin could ever die because people keep listening and start liking them right away. I think they will always be the hard rock band that they started off as, but I think they will always work harder to be the band they started out to be. "And she's buying a stairway to heaven" (Led Zeppelin).

4 out of 5 stars Most of the metal bands of the eighties owe big time to The Zep.......2006-05-26

They were the hottest thing around at the time. If you didn't like the Beatles, Dave Clark Five, or Peter Frampton you worshipped Led Zepplin. This CD has most of their monster hits on it. And it's fine for people who just want a sample of The Zep's unlimited talent. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Early days my favorite of the two best of Led Zeppelin CD's.......2006-05-18

Obviously the guy who wrote the below review is a liar. He probably only started listening to Led Zep because he saw a bunch of people starting to get back into Rock as it used to be. I wouldn't doubt it if the guy saw the tracks downloaded them and decided that they sucked. Then he looked up information on them and said that they were his ideas seeing as how he states that this is the first time he started listening to Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Paige who should be a guitarist's idol. Seeing as how he is a God amongst men when he's behind a guitar. Check out the Led Zeppelin DVD that has an acoustic set playing the Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, Going to California and Thats the Way, best acoustic playing one will ever see ever. So in conclusion i believe that this is the better of the two CD's but the other CD has Achilles last stand and Kashmir on it so Pick that one up too.

4 out of 5 stars back when I was in Led Zeppelin I used to........... ....... ... .. ........2006-03-24

Only 13 songs? What the? Most of the songs are good but I don't care for What is and what... and Whole lotta love because they're just way too long. Other then that I really enjoy the rest of the cd. You get some rockin' good songs, some great blues songs and some good ol' folk music. The booklette comes with pictures in a timeline sequence starting from their earlier days on stage to their later days. The cd also has the band playing communication breakdown, which you can watch on your computer or anyboy else's computer for that matter. There might not be many songs so I would suggest that only new fans get this cd.

i love Led Zeppelin and if you are wondering if you should buy this CD i would but it in a second!! This CD shows the goods of this very influencial band's early years together. From classics like Stairway To Heaven and The Battle Of Evermore this CD is one of my favorites!!!!! LED ZEPPELIN LIVES ON!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Better of the two.......2006-06-03

I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03

This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.

A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

4 out of 5 stars Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21

Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

1 out of 5 stars Go To Bomb The Twist To Sample First!.......2006-07-16

I think it's human nature that you generally will only write "good" comments on something and don't feel as motivated to write "bad" comments, you just don't go through the trouble. That is why if you look on Amazon you will see that 80-90% of ANYTHING will have 4-5 star reviews. Well, 5,6,7,8's deserve a "bad" comment. I saw a new wave Japenese group as a warm up for I think Devo in 1980 and that was my first taste of Asian rock, it sucked. Its 26 years later and I have been all over the world (sailor), and I have seen TONS of phillipino rock bands and at first I was like, wow they are pretty good, after 20 + years I say, this is getting pretty old. 5,6,7,8's sound just like the asian bar bands you are seeing all over the world (even in freakin Vegas, sigh). You might buy it as a gag but I doubt after you listen once you will replay it. Check out the samples on their "Bomb The Twist" release before you buy to make sure this is what you want. They are not cool in my book, just another freakin asian bar band that put out some cd's to sell and found some suckers.

4 out of 5 stars Wide Scream Audio.......2005-10-19

If you like punk rock, new wave, surf music from Quentin Tarantino movies, surf music from Southern Culture on the Skids, Dick Dale, and Link Wray - then you will find this CD entertaining. The influence of Dick Dale's guitar style and the general sound of 60s surf music is prevalent in many songs. This CD is a chronology of, what I assume to be, their greatest hits. As their name indicates, they do draw from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. Influences from bebop to blues to rockabilly to acid rock can be heard somewhere on this CD. Don't be hung up on lyrics because their English is not very understandable, especially in their early work. But the raw, unrefined, genuine garage sound of their early work makes up for it. Although they clearly pay tribute to The Tubes by closing the song Pinball Party with a most articulate "don't touch me there".

There is an assortment of 50s style bebop tunes and covers, which I found to be the least listenable of the collection. I have found that there are about 8 songs I skip when listening to this CD and the last 8 songs are great (if you dig my first sentence in this review). The other songs that I do not skip have undeniable redeeming qualities and serve as a righteous tribute to this bands influences.

What this band has uniquely going for it is the effective use of screaming. Screaming is prevalent in their early work (like in the song Scream) and is somewhat trademarked in their later work as you hear the placement and tonal quality of the screaming become refined over time (as in the song Jet Coaster).

Overall, if you like rock music that is far from the mainstream, and that is guaranteed to wake up the neighbors and the dance floor, this CD is a worthy investment.

4 out of 5 stars Razor Sharp Fun.......2004-08-14

My review is based upon the final six songs of this CD; the actual rating is 3 1/2 stars so I rounded up instead of down. Until about two days ago I had no idea the 5.6.7.8.'s were even associated with the Kill Bill movies, and I was also unable to convince anyone that the 5.6.7.8.'s existed, even among Japanese Americans in Southern California. I once owned a CD copy of their EP "I Was a Teenage Cavewoman" that was released on the Tokyo Karate label in Australia in 1992 or 1993. I have been trying to locate a replacement copy for many years.

All the songs that were on that album happen to be the same last six songs on "Bomb the Rocks." Being a fan of 80's New Wave since I was a teen and not having much exposure to true Punk music, the best I can say is that the 5.6.7.8.'s seem to be more of a gritty, fairly hard-hitting (at times) and whimsical garage surfer-punk band. Their English clearly needs work but the music is too darn catchy to care. One girl they refered to as "Velvet Voice" on the "Cavewoman" album is anything but velvety. She has the most impressive gravel-like scream I have ever heard from a woman in any band, and she expresses her talent often.

"Eddie is a Sweet Candy" feels about as fun as the old 60's tune "Wipe-Out" and is definitely a catchy high-energy tune, worth repeating back-to-back plays. "Blue Radio" is a slow heart break tune that is anything but heart breaking. Velvet Voice opens the song by moaning her woes and floats us through a few verses before unleashing her tormented shriek which carries through to the finale. If the stereo is too loud the neighbors might wonder who is dying.

The 5.6.7.8.'s are really in a class all their own although I tend to liken them to the B-52's (only slightly), pre-1990's Divinyls, Fuzzbox (the 5.6.7.8.'s are nowhere near as tame), and Daisy Chainsaw (the "Eleventeen" album).

Simply put, the 5.6.7.8.'s are weird, unconventional, loud, and loads of great party fun. Unlike what the cover art might suggest, I do not recall any hints of racial bigotry (the skeletons in Nazi German helmets) and no foul language, although I do remember some very mild (and almost undetectable) sexual innuendos. It's a shame it took a movie to put them on the map about 15 years or more after their debut. This is an outstanding group of female punk-rockers. I intend to buy this CD and still hunt down a replacement for "I Was a Teenage Cavewoman."

Not the greatest (catered to a very selective and non-mainstream audience), but still highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Near perfection..........2001-05-18

Being an instrumentalist, I've never been bothered by the complaints of my friends that Meredith Monk has no lyrics -- like a great, perfectly blended wind ensemble, her cast gives a flawless and nuanced performance throughout. At equal turns ecstasy of beauty, eery and haunting, and laugh-out-loud spritely, the two parts I didn't like on this CD were, unsuprisingly, the improvisational bagpipe and the eery but jarring Madwoman's Song. But with an experimenter like Meredith Monk, not everything will hit with everybody, and these thematically provided appropriate contrast to the unrelenting beauty of the rest of the CD. Ms. Monk's unique style and ever strong voice fit perfectly with the medieval setting. Now, anyone know where to find the movie this is the soundtrack to? I've been intrigued with finding it since the day I got this CD of peace and beauty...

5 out of 5 stars Her most satisfying work.......2000-11-13

The finest, most fully realized Meredith Monk cd, methinks. The medieval theme does her well, puts her vocal explorations in a context that really brings out the magic in the music. One of the few CDs I know that can completely transform the feel of a room it's being played in. Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars 1981.......2005-09-29

This record takes you back to the bands "early days"
Hearing them live on this cd reminds me of how good they really were.

I remember seeing the band at "Summers on the Beach" on the Fort Lauderdale strip in 1981.

They were as good as this cd.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CONCERT!.......2002-09-10

SOUNDS EVEN BETTER THAN THE STUDIO VERSIONS. I REALLY RECOMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars Early MP with a bonus track!.......2001-06-16

This CD certainly captures the early 80's sound by (imo) the best of the genre (at least talent-wise) and one of the great live acts. The pure enthusiasm and energy of the circa 1981 Missing Persons can't be denied. If you are truly an MP fan, this is a must-have! I only saw them twice and this CD brought it all back.

The additional track, "Action-Reaction" also smokes ala "Mental Hop Scotch", but harder. As usual, I was totally "amped" after listening to it and couldn't put it away for a month!

4 out of 5 stars great performance, great recording, great disc.......2000-11-01

I just have to echo the listener below--this is an outstanding live recording, and Missing Persons makes it worth our while with inspired, concise renditions of many of the band's best songs.

The previously unreleased "Action Reaction" is a gem of a studio track (also sounding great!) that finds the band at the funnest and punkiest that I've heard it. Bassist Patrick O'Hearn and drummer Terry Bozzio are the standouts here, for me at least, and both are enjoying highly (artistically) successful solo careers making music very different from each other and from this!

If you're at all a fan of Missing Persons, though, you owe it to yourself to check this out, especially now that it's available domestically for far less than I paid for my Japanese version!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy, Best CD I have ever purchased.......1999-06-05

If you are a fan of Missing Persons in the slightest you owe it to yourself to immediately buy this disc. Not only do you get the cool unreleased 1980 studio track "Action Reaction", but 11 live tracks from a 1981 show. The sound quality is so impressive, one of the best, if not THE best live recordings of all time. Even better then the studio tracks, BUY THIS CD NOW! I honestly cannot say enough good things about this disc, even the artwork is damn cool.

Album Description

Introducing these recordings on their first appearance in the mid-'60s A.L. Lloyd wrote of this new singing group's 'hand-crafted harmonies, an immediately recognisable and uniquely distinctive group sound which is uninhibited, spontaneous seeming and rich in texture.' What became of The Watersons after that is history, and can be followed step by step in Topic's other Watersons CDs. "Early Days" recaptures the youthful sound of the original quartet in 27 performances from long-deleted albums.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning unaccompanied singing........2003-06-01

This album is vintage Watersons, and a sterling example of the English a capella vocal tradition, not overpolished but with a vigour and a freshness that wakes you up. Just listen, for example, to "King Arthur's Servants", with a young Norma Waterson singing a clear girlish lead, and the rest of the family coming in with a bracing heartiness on the chorus. I first heard this particular track in a live Clancy brothers version, which was somewhat ruined by some preceding Anglophobic remarks (please, if you're going to cover English material, at least have the courtesy not to insult the creators of it at the same time!) and I had no idea what an exciting song it could be. But that is the case with so many of the songs on this album --even if you've already heard "The Broom of Cowdenknowes", you will be amazed by the almost symphonic sound produced by the family (incredible that there were only four of them). It also contains a rarity, a calling-on song, the prelude to a miracle play, introducing and describing each character ("Ye Noble Spectators"). And they do a wonderful job with Ewan MacColl's "Thirty-Foot Trailer", and the delightfully boisterous "All For Me Grog." We also cannot forget Norma's exquisite rendition of "The North Country Maid" (otherwise known as "The Oak and the Ash". Don't write this album off because it's early Watersons. It is a gem for all that, and if you want to hear pure harmonies and authentic English folk singing you can't do much better than this.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Rockabilly Boogie.......2004-06-02

Blue Cats are probably one of the best neo-rockabilly groups. This album is full of material before the band was known as The Blue Cats (they played as South Rebels, Blue Cat Trio and Little Tony & The Tennessee Rebels). Their influence was of course Gene Vincent, what you can tell by their name.
This album is including rockin' songs of Gene Vincent & his Blue Caps, Johnny Burnette & His Rock 'n' Roll Trio, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and their originals. So authentic rockabilly that you can hardly tell that it is recorded in 80's. Probably the best remakes of songs known by 1950s artists.

4 out of 5 stars Blue Caps or Blue Cats?.......2003-04-13

This is a compilation of the early Blue Cats stuff. Blue Cats recorded only one album in original line-up in 1980. And it was so great, it was a milestone in British rockabilly. So, this compilation gathered together many unreleased material which was recorded by the original Blue Cats members. Only a few original songs, but if you wanna feel the spirit of the Rockabilly revival - this one is for you!
