Great Al Green Classic.......2007-02-08

This is one of the best of Al Greens' collection. I buy it, I play it until it's unplayable, and replace it. My cd collection can't be without it.

I agree with the other reviews -- this album is excellent and, for me, is Al at his best.

I wanted to add my two cents about this particular edition of it, though. I bought this when it came out just to hear the bonus tracks and was horrified at how horrible this cd sounded compared to the previous cd edition on the same label (The Right Stuff) as well as various other cds that contain some of the same hit tracks. The mastering engineer here definitely used too many of the tools at his disposal in an effort to enhance what was already on the master tapes. Unfortunately removing the analog tape hiss (not that it was excessive to begin with anyway) removed the sense of life from these recordings. And other processing REALLY screwed up some of these songs, causing the vocals to become an unfocused mess (I've heard that this is the result of an attempt to widen the stereo image). Do yourself a favor and seek out the previous cd on the same label (unfortunately no bonus tracks there) or an import version on the Demon label.

I agree, why aren't there more reviews of this album?

Al Green is quite possibly the most underrated artist ever, soul music or otherwise. Though some might disagree, most of this is due to the fact that the 70's was extremely competitve music-wise. Whlie The Reverend is remembered, he is not remembered as fondly as Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass and Barry White. And that beloved is a shame.

Still in Love with You is a complete album. The type of album that you can play straight through, in order, time after time. Each songs flows into the next creating the sense of a man giving a melodic testimony concerning his innermost feelings about love, life, longing, pain, sadness melancholy and redemption. Not a wasted note, sound or breath is to be found on the entire album.

Of all of the instruments used in the making of this album, Al's voice is the greatest of them. It can be heard best on "Simply Beautiful". It is simple, controlled and seductive. He purposely teases with a falsetto that's as light as a feather yet as powerful as a tiger. All within his control at the same time. He sings as if he's whispering in his lady's ear - the moans at the end are potent enough to produce babies themselves.

You cannot be a music fan or collector of any kind without owning this album. Masterpiece is an understatement..this is what the soul afterlife must be like.

Al Green was the first great soul singer in the 70's. Plenty of releases until today; yet he failed to release a better album than this, with another one called "call me". These 2 albums stand apart from all the rest of his work.
This album definitely sets the standard of what we call today Smooth Soul.
If you are new to Al Green's work, this album next to "call me", are the ones. You will not regret it.

The Best Compilation of the Man on 2 Discs! Great Sound Quality Too!.......2006-04-21

The title very aptly describes this great classical guitar album showcasing some of the best ever works of John Williams on 2 discs. The track selections are great as they span the centuries from the Baroque greats of Bach and Vivaldi to the modern day composers such as Stanley Myers and York. John even flirts with Blues and Jazz-style pieces and they actually sound very good. In addition, they did a much better mastering job on this version than on the single disc, "Classic John Williams" album that was released a few years earlier and so the sound quality is much better. John Williams' playing is without peer and his technique is superior to the vast majority of the exponents of classical guitar that are out there. I've heard recordings of many others who have tried to play "Cavatina" for example and they have never come close to the natural and flowing version that John plays. If you are a fan of this type of music or of John Williams' work, this is the best compilation that you can get that's out there. Highly recommended!

Relaxing and Enticing to the Ear.......2006-01-26

The first song on this set is why I bought the whole album. It blows you away listening to the precise picking and the gorgeous way it is done. Not robotic like some freaks out there. This is true beautiful music. Runs together like a long summer drive in the country. It is just a perfect album to listen to at home or on the go.

A little something for everybody.......2005-06-15

First, this is gorgeous guitar playing by someone who knows what he's doing. John Williams (not to be confused by the film score composer of the same name) is a superb classical guitarist. Many of these pieces are *classical* in nature, while a few are more *popular*. Many are solo, the rest in small chamber groups. Some will get your toes tapping, some will start you daydreaming, and some will make you cry with their beauty. All of it is magnificent.

Call me the moment you get there.......2006-01-06

This is Aretha's first album released in the 1970's. Then, she was not any longer as hot as her early days at Atlantic in 1967-1968 but she still managed to get TOP 20 albums and singles now and then.
THIS GIRL'S IN LOVE WITH YOU, released in January 1970, was mainly composed of remakes of other artists's hits: SON OF A PREACHER MAN, LET IT BE, DARK END,...
In my opinion, the best tracks here are the hit single from the album (CALL ME) and the superb ELEANOR RIGBY, which sounds even better than the original, with its R&B arrangement.
It's not Aretha's best work but it's close. Not enough original material maybe. The LET IT BE remake is awful, SON OF A PREACHER MAN is not as good as the original but all these songs together with a few good songs and the two great tracks make this collection a rather good one.

One of my Aretha Favorites.......2005-05-31

If I had to pick my top 3 favorite Aretha albums, This Girl's in Love with You would be one of them (the other two are I Never Loved a Man and Soul 69). Personnally, I found this album more enjoyable than what what was to be her next album, Spirit in the Dark. Her version of "Son of a Preacher Man" is a classic example of Aretha's talent of taking someone else's material (in this case Dusty Springfield) and revolutionizing the sound. The other tracks of the album grew on me, such as the Aretha classic, "Call Me". Her version of "Sit Down and Cry" is both sexy, subtle and a gut-bucket of emotion, reminiscent of the raw emotion in "I Never Loved a Man." Her brilliant, near-transcendent cover of "Dark End of the Street" is for me the highlight. The concept of the song is beautiful and Aretha interprets it lyrically and, not uncharacteristically, with wonderful power

Great album but..........2004-10-24

Dusty Springfield's version of the title track is still the definitive version in my opinion. Strangely, it's the same case with "Son of A Preacher Man". Aretha's version is fine, but nowhere near as good as Dusty's.

But Aretha's work here is stellar, and certainly making the case that she is the Queen of Soul. No question!

Moving assuredly into the 70s.......2004-03-16

Firstly, with March 25th looming, let's all wish the queen a very happy 62nd birthday. Certainly within the baby-boomer generation she was and still is the greatest female singer to arrive. We perhaps might allow Streisand to stand at Aretha's right hand, but all others are at least a step behind. You don't have to take my word for it; look among her work offered here on Amazon and just start counting how many of her albums average a full, filled-in five stars.

Aretha and her fans beheld a new decade as this one, originally Atlantic LP 8248 was released on January 15, 1970. It carried many sides that had already gained popularity as singles in '69: "The Weight" (Atlantic 2603 in February), "Share Your Love With Me" (Atlantic 2650 in July) and "Eleanor Rigby" & "It Ain't Fair" (Atlantic 2683 in October). Six days after the album came out "Call Me" & "Son Of A Preacher Man" made the two sides of another single (Atlantic 2706). Aretha had had first dibs on "Preacher Man" and initially took a pass, but then Dusty Springfield grabbed it and took her version into the Pop top 10 in late 1968; Aretha changed her mind about that one. Both versions are quite enjoyable. Later, in July, "Let It Be" would ride the b-side of "Don't Play That Song" (Atlantic 2751).

Speaking of remakes, with the title song, Aretha does again here what she managed with another song that had been a Dionne Warwick hit first, just like "I Say A Little Prayer." In each instance, she so magically recast the songs that I think if she'd sung them in a different language, you'd have difficulty convincing someone (even yourself!) that they were the same songs. Only the lyrics are your clue. I've read that when Aretha takes someone else's song, they can't take it back again. I don't know that I agree to the point of saying Warwick's versions of the two songs were no longer enjoyable - they are. But I do agree to the point that when Aretha recasts any song for her own interpretation, that version then becomes uniquely hers, and no one else can do it like her. If that's not genius, folks, what is?

Queen Aretha at the top of her game; my favorite Atlantic album.......2001-06-24

This album is a masterpiece, and is my personal favorite of Aretha's secular Atlantic releases. It is absolute proof that when Aretha is "on," no one could (or can) touch her. TGILWY has some supernatural vocals -- all of the acrobatics, uncanny phrasing/timing, subtle interpretations, squalls, and different shadings of her late 60's/early 70's work are here, with a range that can at times just leave you dumbfounded. You can't help but wonder what kind of faces she made when she hit some of those notes.

With the sole exception of The Weight, each cut here is absolute perfection from a soul/blues perspective, seasoned with heavy doses of gospel influences. The Weight, while not awful, is certainly out of place in this set and some feel it doesn't belong in Aretha's catalog at all (although it was a moderate hit for her at the time).

But Aretha's interpretations of the two Beatles' songs are priceless, as is her cover of Son Of A Preacher Man. And the blues songs, Sit Down And Cry & It Ain't Fair are better heard than written about. Her own Call Me is southern soul at its finest, topped off by a beautifully understated string arrangement.

Sonically, this album is one of Atlantic's worst, with lots of airy "hiss." It's time for a true remastering, not what Rhino sometimes passes off as such. This is even more of a pity considering that this is one of Aretha's best efforts ever, and that's really saying something.

Aretha is a highly underrated blues/gospel pianist. TGILWY marks the final time when she would accompany herself on each and every song of an album.

As a hardcore Aretha fan that owns virtually everything she released, I've learned to tell it like it is when it comes to her music. Like any artist, she's had a few moments that don't do her justice but this album is NOT one of them. Sonic quality aside, I would highly recommend this album to anyone that wants more exposure to 'Ree beyond the endless greatest hits packages, or anyone that wants a sample of what the epitome of soul was back in early 1970.

Long live Queen Ree. May Rhino soon properly remaster this set AND release some outtakes from this time period that remain in the vaults.

If you are to buy only 1 CD for Brass Enemble, Get this! It captured the BEST of the Candian Brass (one of the top brass enemble in the world). It has all the nice tunes, e.g. Four Seasons, Cannon in D, etc. Strongly recommended.

The first two-thirds of this disc is a fascinating cram course in concert music around the time of World War I. The programmer has put together some fascinating juxtapositions--for example, Strauss's Rosenkavalier leads almost seamlessly into Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Schoenberg sounds out of context with everybody (including Berg). The selections are all short, and performance quality runs from great to mediocre, but this is still a thought-provoking educational experience, even though Bartók and Ives are conspicuously missing. The popular selections are less interesting, often campy, and although vintage recordings are used, they aren't always the right vintage. And someone missed a point by separating Copland's jazzy "Music for the Theatre" from Louis Armstrong, who could have followed immediately. --Leslie Gerber

This is a fascinating compendium of popular and classical music from the World War One period. It evokes all the turmoil, anguish, and also humor, of the age, and is a vital CD to own if you have an interest in the Great War and the music it inspired or was inspired by.

How a Century Has Change Our Perception of War.......2005-10-29

War. Tough subject these days - tough subject since the beginning of time. Yet Americans tend to mend wounds and gradually allow the atrocities of yesteryear to fade into coated cases that signal more memories of 'how things used to be' rather than learning from the tragedies with which war has scarred the planet. National Public Radio issued this excellent memoir at the turn of the millennium and one wonders if it now has the same response that greeted it in 1999.

Linda Kobler reconstituted this mix of classical and popular music with a keen sense of history. The CD is twice divided (in both the classical and the popular music) into 'Before the War' 1901 - 1917, 'During the War' 1917 - 1922, and 'After the War' 1922 - 1928. In the first era are the works of Elgar ('Pomp and Circumstance'), Strauss (a waltz from 'Der Rosenkavalier'), Mahler (excerpt from 'Das Lied von der Erde'), and Debussy ('La Mer') joining the songs 'Shine On Harvest Moon' and 'Alexander's Ragtime Band'. The War period is represented by Prokofiev's 'Symphony No. 1', Stravinsky's 'L'histoire du soldat', and Ravel's 'Le tombeau de Couperin' in tandem with 'Over There'. After the war include Stravinsky ('Pulcinella Suite'), Schoenberg (Waltz from 'Five Piano Pieces'), Berg (excerpt from 'Wozzeck') and Copland ('Music from the Theatre') with popular songs 'How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm', 'The Man I Love', and 'West End Blues'.

The excerpts selected for this survey are exceptionally good: orchestras include NY Phil, LA Phil, Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony, and the Columbia Symphony under such batons a Ormandy, Bernstein, Salonen, Tilson Thomas, Schippers and Stravinsky; soloists include Glen Gould, Robert Casadesus, Lili Chookaskian, Louis Armstrong, et al. The sonics are very fine and the performances are each from significant full recordings remaining in the catalogue.

The booklet accompanying this concert of memories is written by Linda Kobler who uses each selection as a pivotal point in the atmosphere of the globe that accompanied the Great War: it is very well written and informative. This is one of those recorded collections that goes far beyond an accumulation of bits and pieces and instead gives food for thought about how our political and social actions intertwine with the arts in a prophetic way. Excellent Recording!.......1999-03-13

(It was called The "Great" War, because nobody knew about WWII at the time and it was the biggest war anyone had ever seen.)

I think this CD may be a bit choppy to "easy" listeners, but for anyone who has a sincere interest in delving into the musical senses of earlier generations it's VERY good! I recommend the entire NPR Milestones of the Millennium series to such aficionados.

Since when is war great? Life in the trenches waiting for the germans to attack you worrying about whether mustard gas is gonna loft your way isn't exactly like sipping chablis.

I THINK IN HONOR OF THE 30th ANNIVERSARY. THEY SHOULD RE-ISSUE THIS CD IN IT`S ORIGINAL ALBUM FORMAT (2-CDS & EXTEND FORM DVD), WITH PROCEEDS GOING TO A RELIEF FUND IN NEW ORLEANS. TO ME THIS IS THE BEST LIVE R & B PERFORMENCE EVER.

This is the BEST live album I have ever heard - I got the vinyl double album years ago and still have it in my collection (I thank the posters who honestly state that the cd is edited and therefore not one that I'd add to my collection).

Frankie Beverly is one of the most underrated singer/songwriter/ performers ever in my book and even though he is pushing 60 yrs of age, he still puts on a better show than the slew of tween & twenty-something r&b male singers of today's generation. The band is TIGHT and whenever they perform in Philly, I am there with bells on!!

The great thing about this group & this album is the rapport that Frankie has with the crowd; the call & response portions where he lets the audience "sing" in his place and truly the energy that I as a listener can hear & feel just listening to this album.

I'm sure fans of this dynamic group already have this album in their collection and although I'm disappointed that the cd wasn't mastered directly from the album version, "newbies" still can't go wrong in adding it to their collection. This group really is the platinum standard of what an r&b band should be!!

My all time favorite R&B band .......2006-04-09

Maze is a well ballanced group with a singer songwriter that
never went commercial. The band has stuck to what they feel,
rocking west coast R&B and silky soul.I live on the east coast
and the band doesn't play many shows out my way. If they ever
do,I will be the first ticket buyer and front and center at the
show.

I agree with the other writers that this is an excellent album by Maze.But I was also upset that they abridged the C.D. issue of this classic.They cut the INTRO,they cut the song YOU,and they cut one of my favorite songs on the album HAPPY FEELINGS.I wish they would put the album on C.D.the way it was originally released,UNABRIDGED!!!Because when Earth,Wind and Fire and The Commodores put their albums on C.D.'s they didn't cut them!!!So if they correct this problem,let me know I'll be the first to buy a copy!

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17

If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.

Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.

Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18

Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.

A treasury.......2005-11-06

As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'

This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

In The Dark With Greg.......2007-01-24

Balladeer Greg Brown first came to national prominence in the mid-1980s on Garrison Keillor's A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION. The music contained on IN THE DARK WITH YOU reflects that time in Greg's life. Prudence Johnson and Dave Moore, both "PRAIRIE HOME" regulars, backed up Brown on this set.

IN THE DARK WITH YOU is a superb album. What has always set Greg Brown apart are his remarkable lyrics and melodicism. His gravelly baritone, reminiscent of an accent-free Leon Redbone, adds to the flavor. Additionally, Brown is a skilled musician with a wry sense of humor and love for life. Not exactly country, not really folk music, Greg Brown's style is unique unto himself.

Highlights here are the title track, as well as the humorous "Just A Bum," "Who Woulda Thunk It," the poignant "All The Money's Gone" and "Who Do You Think You're Fooling." The CD release includes two bonus tracks. Highest recommendation on this one.

For your quiet days.......2005-06-30

Hey, we are all a little older and hopefully a little wiser. Sometimes I just want a little time to think and this CD takes me there. The combo of lyrics and voice creates a sound that is true, funny and moving. Although "Who Woulda Thunk It" is the star of the album and gets the most plays, check out the title track and "All the Money's Gone."

Brilliant Music!!!.......2005-04-28

This is absolutely one of my all time favorite albums - has been for nearly 20 years! It's as close to perfect as can be! My musical taste ranges from Deep Purple to Simon and Garfunkel, from Bach to Dylan, Charlie Parker to Andre 3000. Greg Brown is right up there with the best! His songs are fun, meaningful, playful, serious, unique, and original. I laugh and cry at the same time while listening to this album!

Greg Brown Hits the Spot Again........2003-04-26

This piece of music is filled with wonderful melodies and words that reach right down into our souls. He seems to know what really is going on and how to put it to music. I hope you will enjoy this CD as much as I have. Who Would Have Thunk It, that he would have affected so many lifes in such a positive way.

A dark cd.......2001-06-19

This is quiet and dark cd, remindfull of Tom Waits in the 70's. Although not in par with "Dream Cafe" and "Poet Game" and his output in the 90's, Brown was already a great singer-songwriter in the 80's, as a matter of fact, he was already a master in his genre.

not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Much Anticipated.......2007-01-26

I have been looking for this CD for years!! Our family had a Shaw Chorale LP which contained almost all the songs on this CD. We had a number of excellent holiday albums and played all of them often, but we wore the Shaw Chorale album out! Not only are the musical renditions excellent and very similar to earlier Shaw recordings, the nostalgia evoked for this listener is incomparable!

A Taste of Heaven.......2007-01-18

I received this recording on cassette from a choral teacher, and played it so often that I wore it out! I especially appreciate the purity of sound and the arrangements in this recording. Lovers of choral music will feel as though "Songs of Angels" brings them a taste of heaven!

The Energizer Bunny.......2007-01-18

Alas that Robert Shaw is no longer with us. Throughout his long and varied career he gave us choral music with exactness,good pacing,and proper execution though not all musicologists would chose his renditions.
In "Songs of Angels" recorded in 1994 he shows us that even in later years he just kept going and going. Giving us stellar performances of masterpieces such as "Elijah","The Creation" and other large choral works. Yet in this album he shows the same attention to detail and
enraptures us with that special beauty of tone and ensemble which was
was to be Shaw's watermark on his life's offering.

This is one of the most impressive period albums I own. Wonderful for the holiday season. Will miss it during the rest of the year.

The Most Beautiful Sounds I Have Ever Heard.......2003-02-04

A fluid and seamless piece of heaven that transcends all classical and holiday music. This is an OUTSTANDING non-traditional Holiday CD!!! Many voices come together as one in these enchanting verses sung in languages other than English. It is just enough language mix to appease and intrigue the soul but not too much so that the listener does not understand the lyrics. For example, the English verse is sung then a verse in German and then back to English. Emmanuel is written this way. Other languages include French (Angels we Have Heard on High) and even Catalan which is a dialect of Spain.

Several of the songs were not traditional Holiday songs (at least for my generation), yet they were intriguing to learn and now I feel I know them just like the traditional ones. This CD offers a healthy mix of traditional and non-traditional songs on this CD.

If you can picture the most beautiful sounds you have ever heard you can come close to the joy this CD will bring you. It is February and I can't stop listening to it. You will not regret purchasing it&the only regret you may have is not buying all of Robert Shaw's holiday CDs.
