Recorded live at Dallas's Texas Stadium in 2004, this long-delayed release is worth the wait. Over 15 tracks, the three superstars sing together, separately, and in pairs for what turns out to be both a musical treat and a long draw of fun. Strait, who normally stands stock still in concert, loosens up and--surprise!--talks between songs ("That's country right there now"), and if my ears heard right, may actually say the word "ass." His is the strongest section musically, as he uses the western-swing classic "Milk Cow Blues" to stretch out with a fine showcase of his Ace in the Hole Band, and brings Jackson out for a masterful version of their hit "Murder on Music Row." But Jackson's set offers a personality-rich rendition of "Where I Come From," as well as a bluegrass version of Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road" and a sturdy cover of "Texas Women," Hank Williams Jr.'s exercise in Lone Star braggadocio. Buffett gets a little too cute on "Margaritaville," on which over-the-top chorines shout, "Salt! Salt! Salt!" But when Jackson and Strait join him for a rousing romp through "Hey, Good Lookin'," you can almost see the ghost of Hank Sr. dancing in the aisles. --Alanna Nash

Once again Richard Smallwood has released an awesome project. When I first listened to it, I said "It's o.k." But, the second listen sold me. The project has his signature style all over it, and true to Richard's nature, he showcases other talent as well. I love the raw, earthy voice of Chaka Khan, the melodic soprano voice of Janet Chandler-Eteme, and Kim Burrell's gospel-honed big voice. It is all about worship to the King of Kings, and Journey: Live in New York does just that.

Ilove Richard Smallwood I have been a fan since I was 15 years old and this CD project was amazing I went to the actual concert in New York abt 3 years ago and I was amazed then as I do now. I belong to the church where Richard Worships and I sing in the choir that he consults (when he is in town that is) But I really love his style of music as it takes u there and if you are not careful you will find yourself underneath a church bench in the spirit. Si get this porject if you have not as this wa is absolutely awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A longtime fan of Professor Richard Smallwood - that, I am.

Smallwood possesses an unquestionable gift; one given to him by God and shared with the world through his passion and ministry of gospel music. The journey of Richard Smallwood (in song) became apparent to the world in the early 1980's, though he'd been singing since childhood and directing choirs since age 12.

Recorded, August 2005, the initial release date of this project was rescheduled, due in part to the loss of Richard's beloved Mother, Mabel Ruth Smallwood, whom he honors and credits highly with giving him his start in the art of music.

I was in attendance the evening of this recording and the atmosphere inside of the Hammerstein Ballroom, before the recording, was electric, to say the least. You see, New York City admires Richard Smallwood and to have him agree to record a live project on the richest island in the world, Manhattan, was an event!

You will find that this effort consists of not 1, but 2 CD's; one disc is enhanced with a video performance and before closing out disc two, you are treated to 3 bonus tracks. As much as I admire Professor Smallwood, while reviewing this product, I wasn't thoroughly inspired by what I heard until disc two filled the studio. Oh yes, "I'll Trust Him" on disc one, performed by Mr. Smallwood was excellent, but that was all. Vision, Smallwood's talent laden ensemble, start the ball rolling on disc two with a rousing anthem entitled "All The Glory"; it just gets better from there as special guests, Kelly Price, The Hawkins Family and new convert, Chaka Khan take the stage.

Overall, this offering from Richard Smallwood is acceptable, for it is he who is responsible for the movement and undeniable marriage of classical music to traditional gospel music; for that he will always be esteemed. My faves on Journey: Live in New York include, "I'll Trust Him", "All The Glory", "Morning's Breaking" and "Precious Is Your Name."

If you're a died-in-the-tie-dye fan, you've probably already heard a tape of this show and will be pleased to know that here it sounds amazing; the entire three hour performance is included, mixed and mastered off of original 16-track live master recordings. If you're not already a Deadhead, Live at the Cow Palace: New Years Eve 1976 is an excellent encapsulation of mid '70s Dead. Recorded in-between 1975's invigorating Blues for Allah and 1977's dreadfully myopic Terrapin Station, it's eminently preferable to the live album Steal Yr Face, and goes a long way towards showing that the critically-maligned Godchaux era had a lot going for it. A few of the songs lumber a bit, but there's a real funkiness and versatility to this segment of the band's career that they never really had at any other time. Several stages of the band's career converge, such that the elastically funky version of the late '70s Dead, the almost jazz-fusion Dead of the early '70s, and the soft cowboy folk sound of 1970 of are all here. First 2007 release of the Grateful Dead (I hope there's more to come). "Live at the Cow Palace" features the complete show The Dead gave on New Year's Eve 1976. Nicely "digipaked", this set also includes a nice booklet with interesting liner notes which focus on (of course) the band, but also on the history of the Cow Palace. These notes point out the bad acoustics of this big hall, but forget about that for this set is beautifuly recorded and the sound quality is simply superb. All the instruments are clearly heard and the sound is certainly warm and tremendously enjoyable.
As for the performance, The Dead were surely inspired that evening. Let's take a brief look at the contents of this 3-cd set.

The first set, as it has happened with The Dead before, proves to be the less interesting. It starts off with "Promised Land", which is nice but doesn't say much. "Bertha" is played more slowly than the classic "Skull and Roses" version. "Mama Tried", in contrast, is played in a more hurried pace than on the aforementioned record. Anyway, there are both nice to hear. "They Love Each Other" proves to be a real treat. It includes a very strong piano solo by Keith Godchaux, and the band sounds very tight. Unfortunately, the results are not the same with "Looks Like Rain", where the group make a couple of easily detectable mistakes, apart from sounding uncomfortable with the song. A nice "Deal" brings the things back together and set the mood for a magnificent "Playing In The Band" which includes, as you can imagine, an extended, pure-beauty jam where everybody flies freely.

1977 started in Winterland with "Sugar Magnolia", and the second CD kicks off. A faster-than-usual and splendid-as-always "Eyes of the World" continues and segues into one of the most wonderful "Wharf Rat" versions I ever heard (a song that is naturally beautiful made even more beautiful. Can you picture that?). After this sonic Eden, we are taken back to reality with some interesting yet more earthy "Good Lovin'" and "Samson and Delilah". "Scarlet Begonias" closes the second CD in its usual relaxed, lovely and cheerful manner.

The last CD takes off with "Around And Around", which usually sounds (to these ears) just plain fair. This version is not the case, embellished with a effective rhythm change in the middle and a fantastic segue into a outstanding "Help On The Way/Slipknot!". Jerry Garcia expands his talent all over, and the band enters into an ethereal landscape where he can speak freely with them in a classic telephatic-empathic-Grateful-Dead-type manner. All this beauty derives in a very short "Drums" and the time comes for a pleasant "Not Fade Away" to distract the listener's mind before a sublime and touching "Morning Dew". "One More Saturday Night" follows and the show finds its proper ending with "Uncle John's Band" (including some usual lyrics confusion) and a simply wonderful "We Bid You Goodnight".
Well, top-notch Dead, warts and all.
A great night of a tremendously talented ensemble.

I still can't find the reason for all that detraction against Donna Jean. Go on and loathe her while I enjoy her voice, I don't care.

There was a period in the late 90s up to a few years ago that the Dead released live albums from their rich back catalogue, including the seminole "Dick's Picks" releases. Things have been much quieter in the last 2-3 years. Among other things, the Dead have turned over further releases from their back catalogue to the well-respected Rhino label.

"Live At the Cow Palace, New Year's Eve, 1976" (3CDs, 22 tracks, 191 min.) brings the 12/31/76 show in its entirety, and the band is generally in great doings. Contrary to many other Dead fans, I've always enjoyed the Godchaux era, and this is as good as any from that era. Set one is somewhat slow in building up, but I love the 20+ min. blowout of Playing In the Band. CD2 brings a great Sugar Magnolia>Eyes of the World>Wharf Rat>Good Loving, but the real jewel on this set is CD3, with a great Slipknot!>Drums>Not Fade Away. Uncle John's Band in the encore is the cherry on top of the cake. Just an great evening of great music all around.

I have usually been impressed with the job Rhino has done with reissued and back catalogue issues, and they don't disappointed me here. Excellent packaging, great liner notes, pictures, it's all here. Bottom line: is this an "essential" live recording in the Dead's output? Probably not, but it certainly is a most enjoyable and welcome addition to the live catalogue of the Dead.

Garth Brooks's obvious inspirations for Double Live were all those 1970s double-album concert recordings from album-oriented-rock influences such as Bob Seger, Kiss, and Peter Frampton. The difference between those classic-rock sets and this one is that Live Bullet, Alive and Frampton Comes Alive all helped to rescue their respective artists from virtual obscurity. Coming as they did from still largely unknown commodities, they seemingly promised nothing yet delivered everything. Already a superstar, Brooks merely promises more of the same on Double Live. He delivers, too. "You guys already know what's coming, don't you?" he asks at one point. "And you know what? You're right." Loaded with 22 hits (and three new tunes) recorded in any number of unnamed cities (and studios, too) over the past seven years, Double Live finds Brooks exaggerating his most irritating tics--the Wynnona-ish growls, the ridiculously elastic twang--in the process ruining even his finest songs. Still, even those convinced that Brooks is the Garth Vader of country music will be brought to pause as tens of thousands of admiring fans sing earnestly along to "The Dance" or "Unanswered Prayers," and scream their way through the anthem "Friends in Low Places." After Garth Brooks recorded the six albums that made him a superstar, he began to show himself much more a businessman than a genuine country star concerned with the artistic integrity of the music itself, and this album was one of the first indicators of his corporate attitude. Around this same time, Brooks would make a deal with Wal-mart to package his first six albums into a box set, with each album given one bonus song, and which was only around 30 bucks. Naturally, this is dirt cheap, to pick up six albums for only thirty dollars.

The real reason why he was doing this? Because he was chasing The Beatles' record of moving the most units and records of any band in the world to become the biggest selling musical artist ever. He had already shattered Billy Joel's status as most popular male vocalist ever according to record sales. Because each disc counted for one unit, this box set would help him greatly in that chase to topple The Beatles, though this would be done only by inflated sales totals. That is what a sellout Brooks became.

Despite the rather dubious intentions of Garth's first box set, nowhere else does Brooks so blatantly sound like he's selling product. From the unimaginative title (DOUBLE LIVE, which is exactly what it is), to the various hodge podge of different songs from different concerts (none of the performances are dated or noted what concert they are drawn from), to the uninspired set list, Brooks just sounds like he's not playing the music because he loves it or it documents a historic, well known performance, but because he knows anything he puts out will sell. DOUBLE LIVE sounds like patchwork, because it is not a real concert, but rather assembled from various dates and venues.

Most great live albums give us a rather idiosyncratic tour of the respective artist's catalogue. DOUBLE LIVE doesn't do that, or examine some of the lesser known songs of Brooks' catalogue. Rather, it plays exactly like a greatest hits album, only with live tracks, and sounds like Brooks was trying to sequence the record like a fantasy concert where you only hear the songs you want, or more likely when a causal fan is looking at it in Wal-Mart (because he won't sell it anywhere else), the fan realises it has all the songs he knows on the radio so he know it must be good.

Like most other greatest hits packages (which is really all this album is, albeit live), DOUBLE LIVE also includes three new cuts, to entice the Garth Brooks completest (sad that there is such a thing) out to buy this album.

Everything is professional and played to perfection - to the point where it is distracting. In the rush of great performances, occasionally things are out of tune, mistakes are made, etc, but a great concert can overcome these difficulties and still retain the emotional and powerful elements of the music. Not so here. Everything is so polished, and there are a few moments that one suspects studio overdubbing on the original live tapes. Actually, in several songs there is quite clearly studio work done.

In another effort to move more units in pursuit of overthrowing The Beatles (sorry Garth, they will always be much cooler than you), Garth Brooks also put the album out with six different covers, so the `collectors' will try to purchase all six editions.

Even during some of the songs, Brooks acknowledges it is just product. As noted in the Amazon editorial, Brooks says to the audience at one point that they know what's coming. During the live version of "The Thunder Rolls", he asks what a double live album would be without the missing verse of "Thunder Rolls", and then goes on to sing it.

For all that, DOUBLE LIVE is entertaining, and I can see why people enjoy it. But ultimately the songs on the live album don't really differ from the album version that much. That just makes the live album boring. The most entertaining thing Garth Brooks did during the late 1990s was record the, admittedly misguided and confusing, ... IN THE LIFE OF CHRIS GAINS. There he is entertaining his rock and roll fantasies, and while it's not the greatest music around, it is one of his most bizarrely fascinating records.

What is really offensive is Brooks' business tactics. Brooks' underhanded, sleight of hand pursuit of chasing The Beatles' record with inflated sales total, and feeling he is just trying to sell product, not make great music, makes DOUBLE LIVE give a very sour taste for knowing listener.

Bottom line: it's a decent sounding record (it should be, with all the studio overdubs), but give this one a miss. The Beatles got their status as best-selling artist of all time because they're fantastic musicians and rock and roll royalty. They did it by making great music, not by cheap marketing, making blatant product, or trying to artificially inflate their sales totals.

Garth Brooks comes alive and kicks rear with this possibly sold-out concert. Being a longtime Billy Joel fan,I'd say Brooks' best recording is Joel's SHAMELESS. Love him or Loathe him, you just cannot take away from the fact that this guy delivers and delivers big-time when playing 'live'. This album manages to capture the electricity, the chemistry and interation with the crowd, the real feeling of regret of not actually being there. A fantastic 'live' album covering all of the hits and more 'Thunder Rolls', 'Pina Colada', 'To Make You feel My Love'..they're all here...Even 10yrs on, the songs still connect and you get reminded all over again of just how good this guy is...Enjoy!!

Live country albums are relatively scarce these days, and that's regrettable. Granted, the studio is a remarkable place, yet there's something about a quality concert recording--the immediacy and raw interaction with the audience--that no studio effort can match. While most concert albums are recorded at one location, Kenny Chesney created this collection from tapes of five years of shows at various locales. The material reflects the past eight years of his career, including "How Forever Feels" from 1998, "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" from 1999, and "What I Need to Do" from 2000. "When the Sun Goes Down" comes complete with Uncle Kracker, who appeared on the single. There's an edgy version of 2005's "Beer in Mexico" and a remarkable performance of "Anything But Mine" in which a surprised Chesney stands by as the audience takes over the chorus. What's amazing is the blazing-hot consistency of the band throughout. While their backing reflects Chesney's arena-rock influences (no number is shorter than four minutes), his charisma, energetic presence, and ability to connect is pure country. --Rich Kienzle

It was cool to hear his old songs with his new voice. I think his voice is more smooth and rich than it used to be (I liked his old voice too). Anyway, good sound, mixed well, upbeat, great song selection. Not alot of his "MEGA HITS", but we can hear those anytime. I really enjoyed this live album, totally recommend.

Consisting of one disc recorded from a Boston radio broadcast in 1979 and the other from a large concert hall in Atlanta in 1983, Live! demonstrates the evolution of the Police's sound while showing off their ability to perform onstage. Aside from the track listings (although several of the same tracks are found on both discs), there are notable differences between the two concerts. The production is the most obvious. The 1979 recording, sounding raw like a well-done bootleg, is mixed for a punk band, which the Police largely were at the time. The Atlanta recording is slick and professional, perfect for the world-famous pop stars they had become. The second major difference is the performances themselves. In the Boston concert, because they had less material to fill an entire show, the band extended the songs by improvising on themes and progressions (while at the same time frequently lead-footing the tempos). In contrast, the Atlanta show featured a denser mix. Three backup singers doubled the number of people onstage, while the songs were moody and atmospheric. Again the band expanded on its arrangements. You won't hear your favorite licks from many of these songs, but the fair exchange is getting to hear drummer Stewart Copeland's inspired improvised fills; Andy Summers's cautious, delicate guitar textures; and Sting's rasta chants. Aside from being a transcendent live album, this collection makes it very clear that the Police were so much more than just Sting and "two other guys." Quite the opposite is true. It testifies not only to the strength of the songwriting but, more important, to the band's musicianship. It had been discussed for years, and in 1995 (apparently after the success of the rare live recordings found on the 4-disc boxset "Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings") a live album by The Police was released. The album, produced by Andy Summers, is a two-disc set - a very wise move, considering how vastly different the two CDs sound. Disc one is a 1979 performance in Boston that was broadcast over the radio; disc two is a 1983 performance in Atlanta during the "Synchronicity" tour.

It is the concensus of both the fans and the critics that the reason to purchase this set is for the first disc, recorded around the release of "Reggatta de Blanc". I completely disagree. To me, disc one, though more ferocious than disc two, sounds almost off-puttingly pretentious (albeit good-naturedly so). Sting seems to be trying almost too hard, and his ego is put on display more than a few times (in the opening of "Walking on the Moon", he announces, "This is from MY new record."). Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers' performances are quite lacking, and all in all the first disc comes across as being very dull, with the exception of a stellar version of "The Bed's Too Big Without You".

Disc two is my favorite, and definitely the highlight of the album. It was recorded during the peak of the band's popularity, and the material they had to work with was of much greater quality than that which they play on disc one (although many of the songs are repeated). Also, there's something exhilarating about hearing the huge crowd all-out roar during the performances. There are excellent performances of a number of songs, like the fast-paced, energetic opener, "Synchronicity I"; the dreamy bounce of "Tea in the Sahara"; the nasty-sounding and powerful "Don't Stand So Close to Me"; and high-voltage performances of "Can't Stand Losing You" and "So Lonely", both of which have some simply exemplary instrumental sections. "Can't Stand Losing You"'s is especially interesting. Prior to the release of "Reggatta de Blanc", the band would burst into a rolling chant during the middle of "Can't Stand Losing You" whenever it was performed live. That section was removed verbatim and recorded as the title track for "Reggatta de Blanc".

Disc two is the exact opposite of disc one. Sting is fine and well aware of the immense power he has over the audience, but his heart is definitely not in his singing, and at times his voice sounds hoarse from a little too much use. On the other hand, Summers and Copeland are just fantastic. Summers' playing is gorgeous and fluctuates between being fierce and being ethereal and moody; Copeland's is fast-paced, tough, and exotic. Still, as others have pointed out, the second disc has its flaws. Chief amongst those are the annoying and completely unnecessary backup singers, who I believe returned for Sting's first solo live recording, 1986's delightful "Bring on the Night". Here, however, they seem to be simply a product of Sting's laziness.

All in all, how much one enjoys "Live!" will depend on whether you're more a fan of the band's more fast-paced, punky material (their earlier work) or their more brilliant, ethereal and new wave stuff (their later work). I am more a fan of the latter, which is perhaps why I loved disc two, but doubt that disc one will ever get much play from myself. I would say that for the Police fan this set is definitely worth purchasing (and by all means, purchase the remastered version; the remastering job is utterly superb), but for anyone else I would highly recommend purchasing their studio albums first.

Apparently,there must be simply SO many 'new' releases put out at any given time,one obviously cannot keep track of EVERY one.As a result,I've only recently become aware of this live Police archive 2-CD title.Sound quality here could be a bit better,but it'll do.Disc one is from a 1979 live radio broadcast direct from the Orpheum Theater in Boston.I remember hearing this on a special late night radio show,don't believe that I taped it,or other wise,I wouldn't be so thrilled to finally land a copy of this disc.Better tunes are "So Lonely",the well written "Walking On The Moon","Message In A Bottle",their very first smash hit "Roxanne","Can't Stand Losing You" and "Born In The 50's".Disc two comes from a major gig in Atlanta in 1983 off their 'Synchronicity' tour.Most memorable cuts here are the awesome "Synchronicity II","De Do Do Do,De Da Da Da","Wrapped Around Your Finger",Sting's signature song "King Of Pain","Don't Stand So Close To Me" and "Every Breath You Take".A must-have for most Police fans.I was fortunate enough to catch The Police on the second leg of their 'Synchronicity' tour,as I never thought it would be their last.I've spoken with a couple of HUGE old school Police fans and they tell me they want NOTHING to do with this 2-CD release,that they're simply tired of seeing Sting out on solo tours and they feel somewhat betrayed that The Police will likely never reunite.Have to wonder how many others feel the same way.

"How Bad Do You Want It," for example references not only bluesman Robert Johnson's crossroads chat with ol' Lucifer, but also the kind of relentless drive that got McGraw to the top of the Nashville heap. The dryly funny "Back When" finds the man who recently bought a $6.4 million Beverly Hills mansion yearning for a simpler time. You don't have to like country to love Tim McGraw's music. And this is by far his best album yet. My favorite two songs are "Live Like You Were Dyin'" and "Drugs or Jesus." Both tunes compel you stop, listen and ponder your life every time you hear them played. "How Bad Do You Want It" and "Everybody Hates Me" are fun songs you can't help but raise the volume and play them loud. I had to buy this CD twice because I played it so often I scratched it up!

Who can fault an artist who so clearly embraces a one-planet, one-people worldview? Someone who recruits guest instrumentalists from every hemisphere to underscore his fondness for multiculturalism and convey his wish for global harmony? You can't help but admire Yanni, the Greek keyboardist/composer, even while acknowledging such nobility does not always translate into deeply satisfying music. On this, the audio-only component of his third made-for-television concert production (filmed in 2005 in Las Vegas), Yanni continues in his adopted role of True Egalitarian, playing a few bars to open a piece, then fading into the background to let other musicians (on violin, trumpet, sax, didgeridoo, hammer dulcimer, even keyboards) command the music's flow. A lovely gesture, but one that often results in extended soloing that sidetracks, even derails, the focus of the music. (Consider "Playtime," where Ming Freeman plays the jazzy piano solo, and the disc's previously unreleased track, "The Storm," pairing violinists Samvel Yervinyan and Sayaka Katsuki in a showy duet that is reminiscent of something from Bond.) Thus while the musicianship is first-rate, the production is superb, and some tracks are terrific (too bad "Standing in Motion" fades out so quickly), this disc is more about the jamming and less about staying on compositional task. Likely this project will be better appreciated in its DVD version, where the staging and artist interaction is on display. Meanwhile, some longtime fans may be left yearning for a day when Yanni will step up to his keyboards, drop the hammer, and let his own muse rock. --Terry Wood

Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Celtic Women, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

This show that Celine does in Vegas, is a must see show. She is outstanding, and performs outstanding. She wears the most beautiful clothes. I have seen her show 8 times, and going in August, and have tickets for her last show on Dec. 15th. This will be the show of all shows in Vegas. There will never be an other singer that will TOP CELINE DION. Susan

This CD is great to listen to and even better after seeing the performance in person. My only regret is that there seems to be a couple of songs missing from the CD that she sings during her show in Legas.

Without a doubt Celine is a great singer, she has a voice as beautiful as Barbra Streisand. I really enjoy listening to her.

This doesn't really seem like an album in and of itself...more as a second-disc bonus material that should've been packaged with THE DEVIL YOU KNOW. Still, these seven songs are all great, and Snider's performance is intimate and quirky as always. His songwriting is at its peak...basically, this is an intimate, live acoustic album with a guy and his guitar, telling stories and joking with the audience in between songs. Fans will definitely enjoy this; non-fans should start elsewhere, perhaps with Snider's last effort, THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, or any one of his other fine records.

I have to admit that this album, while certainly not bad, is somewhat disappointing. I've been a Todd Snider fan since the release of his first single "Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues" in 1994, and while some of his albums aren't completely solid, each one has at least a handful of keepers that make the album worthwhile. And granted, this one is no exception. There are a few songs here that are easily worth the price of admission, most notably "The Devil You Know," which even manages to improve on the studio version. But there's something missing from most of the performances here. On his previous live album "Near Truths and Hotel Rooms," there is an immediacy and an audience rapport that makes the songs in that performance come alive.

Regardless of your opinion of some of his more "sophomoric" tracks like "Beer Run," the album "Near Truths..." crackles with energy, making it one of the best live albums I've ever heard. I know that Todd Snider has had somewhat of a career resurgence in the past few years, owing to the success of "Nashville Skyline" and "The Devil You Know" (which are, admittedly, two of his best albums). I also realize that part of his newfound success owes to the more serious tone of those albums (although anyone who thinks that Todd Snider has only recently become a "serious" artist probably isn't familiar with early songs like "I Spoke as a Child," "I Can't Complain" or even later-day gems like "Waco Moon").

But those albums, serious as they were, were still spirited and passionate. This E.P., on the other hand, mostly sounds leaden, as if the audience was too reserved or too indifferent to respond to songs that practically demand interaction. And that's too bad. I've seen him live probably a dozen times, and every time I've seen him, including on the tour for "The Devil You Know," the crowd vibe and his performance level were closer in feel to "Near Truths...," that is, energetic and high-spirited. I just wish he'd released one of those shows instead of this one. If you like the songs here, get the album "The Devil You Know." The versions on that album are, by and large, better than the ones here. This album is not bad, but it's definitely not the place to start.

At some point in time during the current presidential regime, Todd Snider realized that his considerable story-telling chops could be used for more than just describing the drama of finding a friend's couch to crash on or cataloging the records he listens to. Maybe the turning point came when he got married. Maybe it was when he regained consciousness in that hospital bed. I'd like to think that at least part of it was when he tried to write a political song about "Louie Louie." And succeeded. Because the socio-economic-spiritual-political songs he wrote on last year's The Devil You Know, and delivers here again in a somewhat too dry, acoustic setting, are so genuine and true that they go all the way past Dylan and Prine, and verge on Mark Twain territory.

While the absence of the sympathetic arrangements and skillful playing found on that studio album may initially put you off of these live, solo cuts, by the time he gets to "I'm sure she is/But that's not all she is" in the fourth song, you'll be as deeply into the narrative groove as he is. And if you aren't, I have to wonder if you'll continue as a Todd Snider fan. Because these days, being a Todd Snider fan means being able to sort out the multiple definitions of the word "we" in "We can't just kill what we don't understand", rather than being able to recite all the words to "Beer Run."

Note: The last lyrics he sings to this small Nashville crowd, some of whom he inevitably knows, are "You're all that matters/To me."
